Upgrading HD via CCC, Aperture Serial Number?

Hi All,
I'd like to upgrade the internal HD in my MBP and reinstall everything via Carbon Copy Cloner.
My question/worry is, will Aperture ask for my serial number with the new HD (because I don't have it)?
Thanks

If you clone the drives you should not need to re-enter the serial number, but that will depend on whether the licensing is also tied to the drive's UID. I would not use CCC. It would be better to use Disk Utility. See the following:
How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
  1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
  2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the DU main window.
  3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID  then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and
wait until the process has completed.
  4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
      window.
  5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
      return to the Erase window.
  6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
  1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
  2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
  3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
  4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
  5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
      Destination entry field.
  6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
      Source entry field.
  7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

    any ideas?

You need to contact Apple with a proof of purchase:

  • Where is my aperture serial number?

I'm getting a prompt for my name and Aperture serial number from installation.   I bought Aperture from the App store and have none of the packaging the prompt asks me to check.   What's up?   After two years of using this application I now can't get at my photos.

If you bought from the Mac App Store, the one you access using the App Store.. app then there is no serial number. The app authorizes with your Apple ID and should never ask for a serial number.
If you bought it from the Apple on-line store which you access via the web browser then you would have been sent a serial number by email when you downloaded Aperture.
If yu have been using the app for two years what circumstanses are causing you to need to be installing it now? Have you had a drive replaced or got a new system?  Any information you can supply will make it more likely that someone will be able to help.

  • Aperture serial number does not work

I just got a Mac Book Air, my Aperture Serial number does not work. it tells me it is not correct. How can I use my software now?

First how did you purchase Aperture and how did you install it on the Air? As the Air does not have a DVD drive it would help to know how you got the app onto it.
Start with Troubleshooting Professional Application Serial Numbers and see if that helps.
There is also Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers if you're not able to get your serial number working.

  • Asked for Aperture serial number every single time

After re-installing Aperture on a new hard disk (the old one failed), I was asked for Aperture serial number every time I open the software.  How can I stop it? (iMac 2009, OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.2, Aperture 3.4.1)

You may have a corrupted "ProAppSystemID" file or Aperture cannot write to the System Library.
To stop Aperture asking for the serial number, first check, if you still have an old file "ProAppSystemID" in your System Library.
    Quit Aperture.
Go to your MacintoshHD and open the folder "Library", then "Application Support", then "ProApps".
Remove the File "ProAppsSystemID" to the Desktop, if it exist and restart Aperture.
Reenter your serial number, hopefully for the last time.
Sometimes Aperture writes this file to a temporary directory, when it cannot write to the Library. If the above does not work, look at the temporary directory /tmp
    Use the Finder's "Go" menu
Go > Got to folder    and  enter /tmp into the textfield. If you see the file there, move it to its proper location.
In this case you may want to repair the permissions on your system drive; you can do this using the "First Aid" tools in "Disk Utility" (located in Applications > Utilities)

  • Aperture upgrade won't open with serial number

I have a retail license for aperture version 2.1 with the serial numbers on the jacket for the cd. Several times after upgrades the new version will ask for my name and serial number. The latest upgrade to 3.4.5 tells me that my serial number is invalid. Any suggestions?

Thank you so much for your reply but I want to apologize for wasting your time with this question. I was making a "rookie" mistake by using my cd jacket information from version 2.1. After reading your reply I looked further into my cd's and found the version 3.0 cd with the info I needed on the jacket. The correct serial number works fine with the upgrade.

  • How do I locate my aperture serial number?

After installing Aperture 3 following a hard drive failure I can't remember where the serial number is located on the packaging. Anyone know?

I know this doesn't help in your current situation, but it's a good practice. I keep a text file with all the serial numbers for all my software, and I type every one of them twice to make sure I have them typed in correctly.  I can pull up the serial number from Aperture 1.1 or Photoshop CS1. This is important because some vendors want your "legacy" serial number when you upgrade.  While I doubt that Adobe will ask for my CS1 serial at this point, I can show proof of ownership dating back to 2000 if there is ever a question.  Of course, this file has multiple backups.

  • Aperture Serial Number Issues

I opened Aperture for the first time in quite a while today & it asked me to enter my serial number, which is curious, because it has worked for me on several occasions prior. I am shooting on location today, so I called my office, had someone read me\text me (like 14 times) the number - every time I enter it Aperture claims it's invalid.
I followed the advice in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2001381
And still I can't open Aperture. Any ideas?

    Trey Hill wrote:
anyone have an idea about this issue this morning?
Are you sure they were reading you the serial # for Aperture v2? Also, if you upgraded v1 to v2, then it might ask you for your version 1 key as well as your version 2 key.
Another option: If you've got system backups, the serial numbers are encoded and stored in a file called "/Library/Application Support/ProApps/Aperture System ID"
(tip for anyone else reading this, put the serial numbers into a text file and save in your Documents folder. Just in case something ever decides to erase them, or ask for them again.)
I understand that 'illegitimate' serial numbers have been known to be invalidated by ProKit updates, but I'd be surprised if a legitimate one has got nobbled in this way - unless someone leaked yours.

  • Upgraded from CS5 to CS6 - Serial number not for a qualifying product. Chat not available

I attempted to reslove via CS chat but was unable to get assitance due to it being "outdated".
In so many words: That's BS. Only support can look into the customer database and they have to sort it out. Contact them again, escalate the case to the next level until you get someone qualified enough to resolve your issue.

  • Loss aperture serial number

transfer my old Imac to new.     want to use aperture wants serial number where do you get it?

You can copy the serial number from the "About" panel on your old iMac:
Launch Aperture on your old iMac.
From the main menu bar use the command: Aperture > About Aperture
That will show you the registration key/ serial number.
How did you buy Aperture? If you bought the boxed version, the serial number should have come in the box together with the installation media; my serial number came on stickers affixed to the inner drawer of the box, others found them on the leaflet in the box.
If your Aperture version is an upgrade, you will need also the serial numbers of the previous aperture versions that you upgraded from.

  • How can I change an Aperture serial number?

I loaded Aperture on a second machine and to be able to run both at the same time I need a second license. No problem there, especially with the price drop. However, how or where do I enter the newly purchased serial number?
    Thanks, Peter

I own Logic Studio and have already had it loaded but changed the drive for a bigger drive and have to reload it. I have registered the software before and now that i have to load it again, can't find the serial number card or book or whatever came with it. Is there a way to retrieve a serial number from Apple? I don't find a link to do that...

  • Upgrading to CS6 returns: "This serial number is not for a qualifying product"

I have CS5 and have been using it for about 2 years. The Serial number for CS5 it is registered to my adobe id.
So i decided to upgrade to CS6 today. I then registered that to my adobe id as well.
When i open CS6 and enter my new serial number, it tells me:
Serial Number you provided is valid, but a qualifying product could not be found on this computer
Which is strange because CS5 is currently installed and running on this computer
So it then prompts me to select a previous product that I own and enter the serial number for that. So I select CS5 and enter the serial number for my CS5 license.
However, it then tells me: "This serial number is not for a qualifying product. Please try another"
But it doesn't tell may any further details. I.e. Why is it not valid?
    Can you help?
    Thanks!

Brazzers234 is the serial number for CS5 also an upgrade?  The upgrade process is looking for a full version serial number.  You can determine what type of serial number is registered under your account at http://www.adobe.com/.  For additional details please see Find your serial number quickly - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html.
If you have verified that the CS5 serial number is a full version serial number or your previous full version serial number is still not accepted then please contact our support team directly at Contact Customer Care to verify the validity of the previous version serial number.

  • Aperture Serial Number

I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro.   I used the migration assistant and transferred all data from a Time Machine backup.   Everything seems to be working just fine except for Aperture.  It wants a serial number.   I still have my old computer so I opened Aperture, found the serial number and input it.   Aperture says that it needs the original serial number (Aperture 2), not the uprgrade (Aperture 3).    This apparently is only found on the original Aperture 2 box.  That box is in storage in another state.  I spoke to an Aperture specialist at Apple Support.  They said there was nothing that they could do, and that I would have to access that box in storage.
THIS IS ABSURD!!!   I have all Apple products and programs.  I have a cloud membership, everything is purchased and registered.  Why would Apple make it so difficult for me to use a product that I've already paid for and registered.?!    Of course they have my serial number on file somewhere, otherwise how could they validate that I was using the correct one?    What's the point of purchasing and registering the product if Apple can't even help me in a situation like this.  I just paid $1700 to Apple for new computer.  I want to be able to use the Apple programs that I've also already paid for.

You're not really asking a question and your tone is a  off putting especially as you are talking to other users here and not Apple, but its December so what the heck
Have a look at Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers for what you need to do to get a replacement serial number.
In the past Apple has been very good at helping folk out getting Aperture going again. But if your attitude on the phone is anything like your attitude here good luck.

  • CS5.5 Upgrade does not accept the serial number used for CS 5 Master Collection install

Installed CS5 Master Collection from disk with given serial number.  CS5 Master Collection installed fine.  Inserted CS 5.5 Design Standard disk, and entered its serial number.  It asked for a qualifying product/serial number.  I selected "Master Collection CS5" and entered the serial number I had just used to successfully install that product.  I get an error saying "This serial number is not for a qualifying product.  Please try another."

  • Upgraded, and now my original serial number won't work, can't use pages!

    Hi everyone --
I recently upgraded my hard drive in my ibook g4, and backed everything up to an external hard drive. I've since transferred everything back, including iwork '05. Now I open pages and it asks me for the serial number...only thing is, I didn't keep the original box/book w/ serial numbers, and only have it written on a slip of paper -- I entered it, and it's not right! It's a series of 5sets of numbers/letters (QMMH-6CDS-etc.etc.). Do you think if I call apple they'll give me another one? If not, how the heck can I obtain a new serial number so I can use pages again? This is so frustrating...Thanks!

    Laura,
I'm sorry you're having problems. iWork '05 was infamous for making some serial numbers difficult to enter. Make sure you properly distinguish between zeros and ohs. Zeros will have a dot in the center. Also make sure you enter a one and not a small L. They look very similar. Use the hyphens. Don't use the Caps Lock key.
Finally, don't ever throw out package materials that have serial numbers on them.
