Upgrading iLife 6 to iLife 8

I have a G4 with iLife 6, all working well. Iam considering upgrading to iLife8. I really only want the iPhoto upgrade though.
I have tried to download version 7 (which I understand I need before installing version 8) but get the Message that I need more memory when trying to install on the H. Disc (42.87 g available) What should I do to get more disc space? Should I back up current iPhoto 6 library and then remove from applications?
Also, will I be able to install the other iLife applications without any trouble, does iMovie for instance require G5/Intel system?
Yorvik

Yorvik:
You have to purchase iLife 08 in order to get iPhoto 7 and then use the iPhoto 7.0.1 updater on it. When you install iLife you can select the Customize installation and only install iPhoto if that's what you want.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Upgrading iLife from 04 to 08 and want Templates from the older versions

I am upgrading Ilife 04 to 08. I want to make sure that I first keep all of the templates from the previous versions including the ones between 04 and 08. Are all old templates included with 08? If not how can I get them? i only have a disc copy of 04 and 08. 03 and older were already on my system.

The old iDVD templates are included as an option in the iLife '08 install. After you accept the EULA at the beginning of the installation, choose to Customise your install. Tick the box for the earlier themes under the iDVD dropdown.

  • After upgrade, iLife 09 & 11 both installed

I upgraded iLife from 09 to 11. Now I have both versions installed and iPhoto 11 won't open:
"In order to open iPhoto, you need to update to the latest version"
    How can I:
1.- Get rid of iLife 09.
    2.- Have iPhoto 11 work.
    Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Backup the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in the User/Library/Application Support/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.

  • I can't open my backed-up Iphoto Library on my new Mac with upgraded iLife. How can I retrieve all my pics??

Having backed-up my old iMac using time machine, thinking to open up my iPhoto Library to retrieve all pics from Time Machine, but iPhoto doesn't let me open it. First a pop-up appears: "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete." When I click Upgrade another pop-up appears "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto." But I am using the latest version iLife 11. Is there a way to open up the library in a different way, so I can get my pics back???

It sounds like the restored database is damaged.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Leopard Upgrade, ILife 09 Install On A PowerPC G4

    Hi.
I have a PowerPC G4 1.25 GHz Mac Mini. with 1 GB DDR SDRAM. The internal HD is 40 GB with only 9.5 GB still free. It is up to date, running 10.4.11 currently.
I bought the Mac Box Set (Leopard, iLife 09 and iWork 09). What I am thinking of doing is to do a clean install by erasing and installing Leopard. (This Mac Mini originally came with panther and was upgraded to Tiger. Seemed like a good idea to clear the cruft with an erase and install.)
The specs and user comments suggests that this should work fine. Is there anything I need to know or do before I do the erase and install?
Everything is backed up, so that is taken care of.
After installing Leopard, I would like to install the iLife 09. Will this be okay? Will the iLife 09 install on a PowerPC mac? Looking at the specs, iMovie 09 and Garageband 09 seem to require an intel processor. Does this mean that these two apps will not install on my powerPC Mac Mini from the iLife dvd? Or, will they install but be sort of stripped down, perhaps missing some of their features.
What problems, if any, do you foresee in this? Is there anything that I need to know before starting? Any advice, including a walk through description would be really, really appreciated. Thanks so much.

Oh... but look at the prices for internal Hard Drives! Hmm... could replace the 40 Gig internal with a new, larger one. Wonder if that would that be worth it. What do you think? Is there anything to be aware of in replacing the internal Hard Drive?
Assuming you plan on keeping the "old" Mini around for a while, a new hard drive is not a bad idea. Not only will you get a lot more space for files, you will probably see a noticeable improvement in responsiveness, especially if you get a 7200 rpm model. This is because a newer drive will almost certainly have inherently better performance characteristics than the original (lower average seek time, a larger cache & improved caching algorithms, etc.) and because the same amount of file data can be concentrated into a smaller physical area of the drive, reducing the number of track seeks the drive has to perform. A side benefit is that the new drive may even use less energy that the older, smaller one & thus your Mini will run cooler.
This will not make the old soldier comparable to a newer Mac with a faster architecture, but it is likely to result in noticeably if not dramatically faster boot times & application launches, shorter waits while the "spinning beach ball" is displayed, & quicker switches between running applications -- basically anything that requires reading from or writing to the drive.
Things to be aware of include making sure you get a drive with the right interface: you do not want a Serial ATA interface (often referred to as "SATA") but the older Ultra ATA kind (now often referred to as "PATA," for parallel ATA). Almost any new PATA drive will be either ATA-6 (also called ATA/100) or ATA-7 (also called ATA/133). Either one is a good choice. ATA-7 is potentially faster but the Mini's controller may not support it. If so, it will operate at the fastest ATA level it supports. Avoid ATA-5 (also called ATA/66) because the drive will be older & less apt to have the latest performance improvements.
If possible, get the specs for the original drive & make sure the power requirements for the new one are lower. They probably will be because lower energy consumption has become increasingly important over the last few years, but it never hurts to check.
I assume from the "putty knife" comment that you are familiar with opening the Mini & any reassembly steps necessary to restore its heat sinking ability to factory standards. If not, either learn about them or don't try this mod.
Also remember that you could just add an external drive instead, but if you like DIY projects or the idea of retaining the one-box form factor, this is a viable alternative.

  • Trying to Upgrade iLife 5 to iLife 6 - Elusive Error

Hi, Searching the Apple website was unproductive.
I'm a paid user of iLife 5.0 with master installer CD. I have the receipt on file. I downloaded the various iLife 6 applications, ran the Apple installer to perform the iLife 5.0 to iLife 6.0 upgrade. The installer returned errors similiar to this on each of the various applications:
"You cannot install iDVD Update on this volume. An eligible iDVD application was not found in the location / Applications / DVD.app"
The above error message (obviously) fails to describe "why" and fails to describe what the user must do.
How do I upgrade from iLife 5 to iLife 6, is there an upgrade fee I must pay Apple?
    Any information will be appreciated.
    Thanks much.

  • Upgrading iLife - blank disc in box set

UGH!!!  I have been so careful to do all my research as to not encounter a problem I couldn't handle with my upgrade from tiger to snow leopard.  Bought the box set and now the iLife disc is coming up as "blank disc has been inserted"  any chance there's something I'm doing wrong and I don't actually have to return it for a replacement?????
    Argh!

If you put any OTHER DVD in the drive - does your mini see that?
I ask, because many older CD/DVD drives start to fail by not seeing DVDs....

  • Help with questions about upgrading iLife'08 onto an older PowerBook G4

I am seeking help/advice for a very low tech guy. I upgraded my PowerBook G4 (ancient I know but I have trouble with our thow away society), to Leopard 10.5.2. However, my iDVD no longer works. I plan on upgrading to iLife'08, but based on the system requirements, I am not certain all of the features (i.e. iMovie'08) will work on my older processor. Before I upgrade to iLife, can anyone tell me if I should do it and if they will work on my all the features will work on my PowerBook G4?

You can upgrade to iLife 08. All the apps should install except iMovie.
However, if you have iMovie 06, it will still work. And if you don't have iMovie 06, you can get it as a free download on the iMovie 08 Support Page.

  • Updating/Upgrading iLife

Hi, All. I have a Macbook that was running Snow Leopard which came with iLife, I believe preinstalled. I now have an iMac running only Lion (NOT ML) and I'm trying to transfer my data from the MacBook harddrive to the iMac. When trying to update or upgrade iPhoto, I'm getting a message saying that the current iPhoto 8.1.2 is not compatible with Lion OS. BTW, the MacBook harddrive is in an enclosure since the MacBook is no longer operational. I don't have an installation disc nor did I purchase iLife in the App Store. I know the 3 features on iLife can be purchased individually now, but do I have to purchase the newest version of iPhoto in order for it to work now on either Lion or ML? Thanks so much.

When you first run Migration Assistant, it asks you if you want to transfer from another Mac, from a Time Machine or other disk, or from another startup disk attached to this Mac, among other options. You want to select the option to transfer from a disk, namely your old disk, which you need to connect to the new computer via USB or Firewire.
Since you have already been using the new computer some, there may be a danger of overwriting some of your new things when doing this. Migration Assistant works best on a new, unused computer (or on one you have just erased and installed a new system on).
I think there are two good choices for you here, and either will work, I've done this in the past each of these ways successfully:
    (1) Do the transfer "manually" as you have so far. iPhoto might have been the exception, and it is possible most of your other programs will work given how you manually copied them over. I'd try each of them out, and if something doesn't work, reinstall it or find another work around (as you did for iPhoto). It is easy, of course, to simply copy your data files over. It's the Applications that can be trickier, and things like Mail. However all this can indeed be copied over manually, you just need to find out where certain files and folders belong and put them there. (That's really all that migration Assistant or Setup Assistant does anyway ...). More complicated programs like MS-Office or Photoshop should be reinstalled on the new system, unless you try option 2 below.
    (2) Do an erase and clean install of a brand new Mac OS on the new computer (back up what you have first in case something goes amiss) and then on the first boot after doing that, run Setup Assistant (which is a special version of Migration Assistant; it will come up automatically on first new boot) directing it to use that external drive to migrate from. This is the cleanest and easiest approach, but it might be disruptive if you've been using your new Mac already for a while.

  • Upgraded iLife 09 to 11 and iPhoto BROKE!

I had iLife 09 working just fine for as long as I've had my Mac. I installed iLife 11 from the disc today and iPhoto completely stopped working. iWeb and iMovie are still 09 and are working fine, but they did not upgrade at all.
I'm really choked. I don't know if I'll get any of my iPhoto back, and I'm really ****** off! Someone, help!

Here is what worked for me -- my new iPhoto '11 (9.1.1) wasn't able to open an iPhoto '09 library after I used migration assistant to move everything to a new iMac from another iMac -- the solution below was very quick and easy: quoting darktooth from this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2633609&start=0&tstart=0
just found the solution for the problem. In my case the library had permission problems which were not solved with Disk Utility program. So here is a solution that I found (originally was for a different problem but worked perfectly here).
Issue these 3 commands in a terminal window to reset the permissions, then just start iPhoto09 and you can upgrade your library again. Change username to your mac user.
sudo chown -R username (hit spacebar, drag iPhoto library into Terminal window, press return)
sudo chmod -R -N (hit spacebar, drag iPhoto library into Terminal window, press return)
sudo chmod -R u+rwX (hit spacebar, drag iPhoto library into Terminal window, press return)

  • Upgrading iLife 06 to 08

    Hi Gang
Just picked up a new copy of iLife 08, (improved editing and takes with GB). Can you guys please tell me, do I simply install 08 directly over 06, and drag the apps to the Application folder, or is it neccessary to delete anything?
Can you open saved iLife 06 projects; iPhoto, GB, etc., in iLife 08?
    Thank You
    Mike

Yes, you can just install a new versioin over an old one. If you want to keep the old one too, you can rename it to something like "Garageband 06", you'll end up with two GBs in your application folder.
And yes, the apps are backwards compatible, not the other way around.

  • Corrupted itunes after upgrading ILife 08

Installed ILife 08 over the weekend and just tried to open up ITunes and the following msg appeared "This copy of Itunes is corrupted or is not installed correctly" Please advise on perhaps what I need to do. Have i totally lost everything???? Has anyone else experienced this after installing ILife 08? Thanks of any insight...

HI Lisa and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
It sounds like you already had iTunes on your Mac and then installed another version of iTunes that's part of the iLife 08 suite of software.
Back up your iTunes Library to an external source such as CD/DVD (if you have a SuperDrive), an external hard drive, a MobileMe account using iDisk.
Get AppZapper And use it to delete your iTunes appliations. You can drag the iTunes apps to the Trash, but that doesn't delete all the associated files... AppZapper does that job for you. Reboot and run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. DU is located in your Applications/Utilities folder. Launch DU, select MacintoshHD 10.x.x in the panel on the left, then select the FirstAid tab, then click Repair Disk Permissions. When that is finished, Quit Disk Utility.
Don't reinstall iTunes from the iLife disk. Go here instead: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Just follow the instructions to download and install iTunes.
After you've done that you should be able to recreate your iTunes Library:

  • Upgraded ilife last week-update today says library needs upgrade to work

I am afraid to allow this upgrade for fear I will lose my library. This is what pops up>>>>
The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.
Library will not be readable by previous versions afterwards.
Please tell me what this means. Thanks

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
