Upgrading iMac G4 to OS 10.4 and iLife apps

everyone:
i'm upgrading my old iMac G4 flatpanel to 10.4 in a few days, and just realized that it does not come with the iLife programs like a new Mac does.
should i:
a. install iLife from the original discs that came with the computer (10.3.6) or
b. install iLife from the discs that came with my brandy-new MacBook.
if i do b., will it conflict with my MacBook while we share my home network? in addition to iTunes, i use Garageband for recording all the time.
also, if anyone has any tips / suggestions on doing a clean (wiped!) install on my machine, please let me know. it has tons of internal operating system problems (apparently these are called 'kernel' issues or something) and needs to be formatted and re-installed with the upgrade.
(and yes, i'm backing up the entire system onto my external hard drive for bringing the necessary info back over once it's done.)
thanks!
iMac flat-panel G4   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

erin:
You have a number of issues, so I'll try to take them in turn:should i:
a. install iLife from the original discs that came with the computer (10.3.6) or
b. install iLife from the discs that came with my brandy-new MacBook. You should install from the disks that came with the computer, or purchase new disks. It is not advisable to use computer specific disks on computers to which they are not specific as (a) it can cause problems as it was not optimized for the computer, and (b) it is a violation of the single user Software License Agreement, which statesThis License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time.... In addition, MacBook software will not install/work on a PowerPC and vice-versa.also, if anyone has any tips / suggestions on doing a clean (wiped!) install on my machine, please let me know. it has tons of internal operating system problems (apparently these are called 'kernel' issues or something) and needs to be formatted and re-installed with the upgrade.A wipe and install should be an avenue of last resort. If there are issues it may be better to try to resolve them before attempting a wipe and install. However, if you are sure that is the way you want to go, post back for directions. Let me know at the time whether you are planning to install Panther or Tiger.
Good luck.

  • IWork and iLife apps are _not_ showing free in the AppStore anymore. Why?

Just uppgraded to iOS 7.0.3 on my new iPhone 5s. iWork and iLife apps are _not_ showing free in the AppStore anymore, only the Buy (for a price) option is there. Why? These apps used to show up free for me earlier, but i didn't install them due to the reported system instability they caused. That instability is reportedy addressed in iOS 7.0.3 but the apps are not free anymore, are they? Looks like it's not what was advertised...

Ok... rebooting my iPhone 5s one more time after upgrading to iOS 7.0.3 solved the problem - after the reboot all the iWork and iLife apps are showing free in the AppStore again... Good deal!

On my iphone those apps still require me to purchase them.

The MacBook versions run on a Different Operating System...
You will need to Purchase the iOS iPhone versions

  • If I upgrade to ios5, my photos, my music and my app will be deleted?

If I upgrade to ios5 on my I-Phone 4s, all my pics, all my song, and all my app, will be deleted?

All photos transferred from your computer should remain on your computer.
Photos/videos in the Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. The Camera Roll is for temporary storage.
All music and all apps on your iPhone should be in your iTunes library on your computer.

  • Upgraded to Mavericks, updated iWork and iLife apps, update still tells me to download the update

So I spent all day downloading all the 'Free' updates which was fine, although 14GB later, so huge, they should have USB version but anyway the problem is, I installed Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iPhoto and iMovie perfectly fine, but the App Store keeps telling me updates available and they are the same version as I just downloaded. Although iPhoto is weird even though is says copyright 2013 it says iPhoto '11 - i would gather it should say iPhoto '13 but it doesn't look any different except the new icon.
    Anyone else have this issue?

I did a support chat with Applecare, and was told to try repairing the permissions for my boot drive (Macintosh HD) via Disk Utility, and then try reinstalling the updates one more time.  There were quite a number of incorrect permissions (I was surprised), so we'll see if it helps...
I was also told that clearing the App Store preferences might do the trick:
To pull the plist file for App Store, what we want to do is:
    1. Open Finder and click on the Go menu in the  Apple Menu Bar.
    2. Hold down the Option key and choose Library
    3. Open the Preferences folder and locate this file
    com.apple.AppStore.plist
    4. Go ahead and move that file to your desktop, then quit out of App Store
    5. Reopen App Store and try to replicate the issue
    6. If this solves the problem, go ahead and move com.apple.AppStore.plist on your desktop to the trash
So now that I've reinstalled the iWork "updates" for a third time, and Mac App Store seems happy, we'll see if the fixed permissions and plist file does the trick.
I'll update if the ghost updates return
    Hope this helps!

  • Somewhat old iPhone 5, gonna upgrade to ios 7. asking about iWork and iLife.

i was watcing the event last night where tim cook revealed the iphone 5s and 5c and he was saying that iWork suite apps and iLife suite apps are gonna become free. this morning i check the apple website and was looking at the specs of the iPhone 5s and when i scrolled all the way to the bottom it said something about devices activated after sept. 1, 2013 will have iWork and iLife available to them...
does that mean that i have to get a new iphone and activate it.... im really confused about this....

Good for you. But, that's NOT what the footnote says. The footnote states Apple devices activated after 9/1 that can run IOS 7.0...nothing about when purchased. Since all iOS devices that can run iOS 7.0 will require "activation" after being updated, I think the footnote needs clarification from Apple, and apparently, I'm not the only one that feels so. This is the second post I've seen regarding this.
Like I said, we'll find out when iOS 7.0 is released, unless Apple gives clarification before hand.

  • Upgrade mountain lion, cant restore back up n iLife apps missing

i had upgrade my macbook to mountain lion, now i cant restore my back up from my time machine and all my iLife apps and Microsoft 2008 missing. How can I get it back?

About ilife if you bought them from the MAS then you can redownload then again, but if no then they are in the DVD's that come with your mac.The first is the operative system but in the second one you can find the bundle applications they are the ilife applications.Just insert it and install them.
If you loss the dvd's then contact apple and with your machine serial number probably can get a replacement.
    Hope it helps.

  • How can I reset my MacBook Air to factory settings that will delete all 3rd party apps and wont delete my data and iLife apps?, How can I reset my MacBook Air to factory settings that will delete all 3rd party apps and wont delete my data and iLife apps?

I gave my MacBook Air to a person to use for a while, and now I got it back. I want it to be good as new before I start using it properly. Its okay if I lose data but I dont want to lose the Apps that were onboard. I want to start all over again.
    Thanks

Assuming you don't have a Time Machine backup before you lent your MacBook out, then you've a few choices.
If you want to set it back to the day you got it, then if it's Snow Leopard, use the micro USB stick that came with your Mac and after boot from it ( hold the Option key on startup) select the USB stick and when booted from it, go to Disk Utility and reformat the HD then install SL. when it's done and started in 10.6, select the install Applications from the USB stick, then your back with iLife apps etc.
If Lion, restart from the Recovery Partition as per the instructions above except you don't need anything plugged into the Mac, select Recovery and again DU erase and install Lion. once Lion is installed the iLife apps will be available to download from the App store as your MacBook will be recognised as coming with these apps.
WARNING, both these methods remove ALL user data

  • How do you sync the free iWork and iLife apps to multiple supervised devices?

So, I have a number of 4th gen iPads that are eligible for the free iWork and iLife update. I downloaded all the apps manually to one device, but was wondering how you can do this with multiple devices at once. If I try to add the apps in Configurator it asks for codes, because we have these apps downloaded already and on older devices. Configurator does not dinstinguish between the older and newer devices.
I tried making a backup of the first iPad that has the apps and pushing that out on Configurator, but the apps did not transfer. Do these need to be side loaded? Is there another way? I am trying Settings > iTunes and App Store > Sync apps across devices, and having all ipads logged in with the same account. But, no sync of apps yet, and not even sure that will work...
    Ideas?

Probably sould just do them individually.

  • My Dad gave me his old Macbook Pro and I downloaded another version of Lion so it's tied to my ID and it worked but I cannot download and iLife apps at all? It doesn't even give me a choice to purchase it just say accept?

My Dad gave me his old Macbook Pro and I downloaded another version of Lion so it's tied to my ID and it worked but I cannot download any iLife apps at all? It doesn't even give me a choice to purchase it just say accept? And gives me a dropbox that says that these apps are tied to another ID and I need to log into that ID in order to download it.

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
This is a common issue with second hand Macs. The iLife apps came bundled free on this Mac and they are registered to your dad's Apple ID. The only way for you to acept them into your Apple ID is for you and your dad to contact Apple Care, explain that he has passed the Mac to you and ask that the iLife apps be released from your dad's Apple ID so that you may accept them into your Apple ID.

  • Recently Downloaded OS X Mavericks, why aren't iWork and iLife upgrading?

Upgraded to Mavericks, but iWork and iLife apps aren't upgrading!? WHY??!! Please help!

Don't worry I think many people
are experiencing apple store problems at
    the moment.
I too have this problem with iWork and
Aperture. All apps are reg. to me. My account
Refused to download and gave me a broken installer
    First time around.
Amazingly my pro apps were all unaffected.
Still waiting on iLife and iWork to be sorted out.

  • Can't share Aperture photos with iWork and iLife

I can't see my Aperture photos in any iWork '08 or iLife '08 application. I am running 1.5.4; sharing previews is enabled in Aperture Prefs; previews for my entire Library set to 1280px (and there are definitely previews for every master image). However, I see nothing in any iWork '08 or iLife '08 app – no Aperture 'disclosure triangle' in the Media pane. Nothing. Zip.
I have rebuilt the Aperture database (Command + Option on start-up) for all 242 projects, but still no go.
The only thing I think it could be is that my 'Aperture Library.aplibrary' (all 95GB of it) is stored in its entirety on a different hard drive, with an alias pointing to it from my '~/user/Pictures' folder on my boot drive (which it shares with iPhoto Library). I thought alias' were supposed to be transparent to the OS and the other apps would be able to see my 'Aperture Library.aplibrary' as if it were on my primary drive (i.e., the same drive). Is there a permissions thing happening here?
This one has got me stumped. Any thoughts on why I can't share my Aperture photos with iWork '08 or iLife '08 would be gratefully received.

    Solved it!!!
I just went a little berserk with the plist files in ~/user/Library/Preferences (sorry, not very scientific....).
Interestingly, in addition to iWorks and iLife apps having their own preference files, there is also a file called 'com.apple.iApps.plist'. This was locked for some reason. Anyway, it and all the other pref files got trashed and then the trash emptied. Then I restarted my Mac and opened up iPhoto.
    Bingo!
    Same for Pages, etc.
Thanks to all who took time out of their day to help me -- much appreciated.

  • The iLife and iWork apps for Mac OS X Mavericks

I tried to download the iLife and iWork apps for my macbook with OS X Mavericks for free but I only downloaded the Garage band. How am I supposed to get them to install on my macbook.

iWork apps are only free for users who bought a Mac after October 1st and for users who already have iWork '09, and iLife apps are free for users who already have iLife '11.
You mention that paid apps are the ones that you cannot download. What happens when you try to download them? If the Mac App Store asks you to pay for them, do it. You are using an old version or you have not got them installed
