Upgrading internal HD on MacBook Pro 13 inch

I held off purchasing a MB or MBP because I wanted 13" and FireWire. OK that's here since last June j- but I now want to move ahead but want an internal drive of at least 500 gb - and prefer 7200 rpm. OR SHOULD I??? Will 7200 rpm eat up lots of battery and not give me much more in speed? Also, I'd like 750 gb, but not sure if a 750 gb is out in the 9 mm thickness (i.e. internal notebook size)??
And if so-- 750 gb- 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm?
Since I do not use my MB much on battery alone (usually plugged-in) - the consumption issue of 7200 vs 5400 rpm is not vital - speed is important-- also heat, reliability etc.
Today when I travel more than 24 hours I carry a fully backed-up and bootable USB internal SATA drive so that I can either use it or actually replace my MB-13" internal. Is that easy to do with the new MBP-13"??
Thanks for any comments or links here--- My 320 gb drive seemed so huge 2 years ago- it is down to 70 gb of available space and I don't want to go below 32 gb free so... A TB internal drive anyone??

And there is a 750GB Western Digital drive at 5200 RPM (yes, an odd rotational speed) that will fit despite being 12.5mm high. The available reports indicate that it's not fast, but it's certainly big. WD has also announced a 1TB model that's expected to be the same physical size, but it doesn't seem to be on the market yet. There are reports on the 750GB WD drive here:
http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
Most reports I've seen on recent 7200RPM drives in MBPs indicate that there is little or no perceptible difference in energy consumption or heat dissipation between a 7200 and a standard 5400, but there's a noticeable difference in speed.
EDIT: Your present 320GB Seagate drive is a 7200RPM unit.

  • Internal drive for Macbook Pro 13 inch with Retina display from late 2013?

Hi everyone. After some water spillage to my new computer, the guys at the Apple Store have told me that my internal hard drive needs to be replaced. No other damage was done, thankfully. I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch with Retina Display from late 2013. The Apple genius said my current hard drive has flash storage, and that my new hard drive will need that as well as the computer requires it. Does anyone know where I can buy such a hard drive? Is it possible to buy it from Apple? I am happy to buy online or in a store (I live in Australia). Also, is this Mac Pro model difficult to take apart? I'd like to install the hard drive myself.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

  • Upgrading internal HDD on Macbook Pro 13(Unibody)-Mid 2009

    Hi All,
I have a 160GB internal hdd on my MBP 13 which i am finding to be pretty low on space. So I am planning to upgrade the internal HDD. I did a lot of reading on the web and looks like there are 3 contenders:
    1. WD scorpio blue 500/640/750 GB, 5400rpm
    2. Seagate Momentus 500/640 GB, 5400rpm
    3. WD scorpio black -- 500GB, 7200rpm
My space requirements are not too high. Even 500 would suffice, but since the 640 and 750 give a better bang for the buck(GB/$), i am still contemplating.
Would 640/750 be an overkill resulting in slow performance, reduced battery life and noise ? If so which one would be the best choice considering performance is more important for me once we cross the 500GB limit.
    My parameters for performance are:
    - Speed should not reduce compared to my currently installed HDD(Hitachi 160GB).
    - Noise should be negligible, as it is now on my MBP.
    - Battery life should not reduce.
Can any one suggest which one I should go for? My budget is $100.

    Hi,
Not really a suggestion as such, but I have just installed a WD Scorpio Blue 500gb HDD myself. Unfortunately I've been having some issues with it and started a topic on this site to find an answer:

  • Regular pauses on MacBook Pro 13-inch after upgrading to Lion

    Hi,
Ever since I upgraded to Lion my MacBook Pro 13-inch (Core 2 Duo) regularly pauses every hour or so; each pause lasts about 5 seconds, and during this time I see the spinning ball and my external HD (which I use for Time Machine) spins up. I also notice that opening certain applications take a longer time (spinning up my external drive); perhaps loading my previously loaded files? I never had this problem in Snow Leopard, but I regularly have this problem now. Any ideas on how to stop the pauses from happening?
    Thanks!

    Finally resolved...
It's because of the fact that my mbp is too old to be upgraded to lion ...
Although I've seen successful experiences of upgrading mbp 895 (manufactured by the end of 2007) to lion, it's a disaster due to random death halt according to my experiences..
It seems 10.7.4 could be OK since I have met no problems for more than one week, however, when upgrading to 10.7.5, the death halt happened every half an hour, while even if I downgraded to 10.7.4, it doen't help, while when I continuously downgraded to snow leopard 10.6.8, it works normally.

Do Not post stuff about how Airplay doesnt work, because i dont have Apple TV and dont need to hear about it.

If you have an external drive equal to or larger than your internal HD, clone your internal to it with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Test the clone to make sure it's bootable. Then upgrade either one. Try it out first.

  • I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model. I have read some reviews of Maverick and Yosemite making the older macs slower. Is this true?

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory. and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model? Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite?
When I had gone to the apple care centre in India a few months ago to upgrade my OSX to Mountain Lion, I was told that considering my macbook pro's specs, upgrading it would just make it less efficient, and that I should stick to Snow Leopard unless I consider buying a newer mac that would benefit from it. Is this true? I find it a bit hard to believe. Which update is most recommended?
I also notice that my mac has gotten considerably slower. While using chrome, it buffers and struggles with even just 5 tabs open. Could this have something to do with my current ios? As a precaution, I have always been making sure I have enough free space on disk i.e around 70 - 100 free out of 250GB.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

  • Since Yosemite upgrade, high pitch noise creating case vibration on MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) (on watching the keynote online)

    Hi,
Great work on Yosemite, great new design as well.
Several problems since the Yosemite upgrade though :
        - When playing high pitch noise (watching the keynote for example), the speakers make the case around it vibrate. This was not happening under Mavericks and previous OSXs.
        - This page (post editing) does not allow the right click (works everywhere else as far as I'm aware).
        - when changing the volume, I have now the noise feedback when clicking on shift+volume up/down and no sound when clicking on volume up/down on my keyboard (was the inverse before).
        - The keyboard light was stuck in off, had to restart the computer.
More general problems (covering the last OSX since introduction of 10.9) :
        - lack of possibility of choosing for a 3x3 set of desktops as it was before (the new mission control only allow us to have a horizontal set of several desktops)
        - Notifications cannot be turned off automatically when being in full screen. (only options for auto turn off given are "display is sleeping" oO and when "mirroring on another display" -> meh, would have prefer when having an app in full screen)
    System :
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009)
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,3
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Memory: 8 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP53.00AC.B03
    SMC Version (system): 1.48f2

Thanks for your lengthy reminder dude, I have a similar Mac with yours. I suspect its a software fault because it happens after I upgraded to Lion, 10.7.2.

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009) - Maximum internal hard drive size and speed?

What is the maximum size of hard drive and speed for an internal hard drive to my Macbook Pro (13 inch, Mid 2009), please?
I bought myself a Technics 1TB, 7200 rpm internal hardrive. Made a clone successfully in Super Duper.
It fits, but It is not available for starting up my Macbook Pro. Not available in System Prefs, but visible and grey in Disc Utility.
Although it starts up my Mac Pro just fine.. but not my Macbook Pro.
Is there a limit of hard drive specifics?
What is the maximum size of hard drive and speed for an internal hard drive to my Macbook Pro (13 inch, Mid 2009), please?

    Thanks for the reply
    I cloned the Technics HDD ( 2,5" HGST Travelstar 7K1000 - 1 TB : HTS721010A9E630) from the MBP.
I tried to boot it up with my Technincs ( 2,5" HGST Travelstar 7K1000 - 1 TB : HTS721010A9E630) installed in my MBP (as my internal hard drive).

The retail dvd I have has a part number: MC223Z/A
    I am currently running 10.5.8
Anyone know what the problem might be?
    Thanks

Perhaps the HDD does not have sufficient room.  It needs a minimum of 5 GB for Snow Leopard.
In all other respects your MBP should be able to install 10.6.
Disk MC223Z/A is the appropriate retail disk.
    Ciao.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It looks like you have got an Early 2011 or newer MacBook Pro, so you can use 16 GB of RAM. You can buy more RAM at OWC or Crucial. Remember that you cannot upgrade RAM in MacBooks Pro with Retina display
In case you have got a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, you can only install 8 GB of RAM

    Di.grad
    toshiba 1.tb and 7200 RPM ?
Those are same as use by Apple in the non-retina macbook Pro, Ive got piles of them, only a Hitachi is better.
Toshiba HD are a hair noisy even by Toshiba own admission, but no big deal.
I would NEVER buy from OWC merely for the reasons that their prices are miserable.
    Here you go,   $65

    A 15" mid-2009 MBP RAM specifications are: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
As has been pointed out, OWC is an excellent source for Mac compatible RAM.  Crucial is another first rate source for Mac RAM.  RAM from either vendor will work just as well as any purchased from Apple with the bonus of being less expensive and having a lifetime guarantee.
    Ciao.

  • Internal microphone in MacBook Pro 15" not working after upgrade to Yosemite

    Hello
This issue is similar to iMac's problem with the internal microphone not working in FaceTime. In sound preferences, I have the internal microphone set for input. In FacetTme, I have Video->Microphone->Internal Microphone selected. There is no corresponding menu item for Audio (perhaps this is the problem? ). When I make a Facetime video call, I can hear the recipient, but they cannot hear me.
