Upgrading internet speed, will it change my settings

hi all. my first macbook pro is about a month old now and i like it so much i was thinking about upgrading my internet speed. i have att medium dsl, but i may get the faster one. my question is: will this cause me to have to change anything around in my airport? i don't know if this is an att specific question or just anytime anyone upgrades any speed do they have to redo anything. i'm not real good at this stuff and in fact never had wireless in my house til i got this macbook pro, so if it's gonna mess everything up, i'll just leave it as is. thanks, this forum is very helpful and i read it daily just to pick up tips.

Hi,
Upgrading your internet speed through your service provider will not affect any settings you have set up between your wireless router and your MacBook Pro. It will be a silent and seamless upgrade.

SSince last upgrade to my iPhone 4 the internet history will not clear. Tried usual things

I think I've worked out how to fix this. I closed iTunes and ran Photos with the Option/Alt key depressed and told it to use the old iPhoto library as the System photo library. This caused Photos to reimport all the old photos into a new Photos library called Photos Library 2.
When I then ran iTunes and connected my iPad, I got a message saying that the photo source had changed and nothing would be synced until I selected the correct option. This did not happen the previous time I ran Photos and imported the old iPhoto library. I'm now syncing using the second Photos library and it all appears to be working.
I suspect that I closed my laptop down during the original conversion of the iPhoto library (thinking it had finished) and this interrupted the process. This time I let it carry on working for four hours before opening iTunes and I suspect that is what made the difference. Of course, I've lost all the photos I added in the last ten days, but I may be able to retrieve them from my backups.

  • R6300 poor wifi speed with upgraded internet speed

Hi! Recently Comcast upgraded my internet speed to 75Mb from 45MB. I have a Netgear R6300 router and when I was at 45 MB the router was able to run WIFI at 45MN too. Now that I have 75MB - 80MB shooting thru the modem my router hardly can run WIFI at 20MB? Anybody experienced this issue? I called CC TS and the rep told me that they are having a lot of people calling with similar issues with Netgear routers and Xfinity... He offered no explanations why at all. His recommendation? Buy a new router... or get one of theirs... are they kidding me? This makes no sense to me. I rather move to Charter than going and buy a new router because CC can't get along with Netgear routers. Help please, anybody? Thanks

Just rant the speed test - hardwired to laptop thru router DSLreport speed - 45MB download, 11.4 upload so is showing better speed hereXfinity speedteast - 88 MB download, 12.1 Upload WIFI speed test thru DSL report  usign Ipad  right by router- 68.2 dowload, 12.02 upload2nd test = 73 MBdownload, 12.6 MB uploadJayInAlg wrote:

  • Safari 5.1 will not change my privacy settings without quitting and restarting the browser.

I have installed Safari 5.1. When I attempt to change the block cookies setting in the privacy preferences, the browser will not change the settings until I quit and restart the browser.

Quit Safari. Open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left.
Open the Library folder then the Cookies folder.
Move the Cookies.plist file from the Cookies folder to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.
If that didn't help, quit Safari. Open a Finder window select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the Library folder, then the Caches folder, then the com.apple.Safari folder. Move the cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash. Relaunch Safari.

  • Internet speed inconsistant

I have had the Airport Extreme base station for several months and it has worked without a hitch until this past week. Recently, the internet speed varies wildly: Web pages load erratically and Youtube and Movie Trailers on Apple TV take forever to buffer. I have tried multiple settings with the same result each time. To test, I used my Comcast Cable internet directly through Ethernet and with my Airport Express. Both work fine so it is definitely an issue with the Airport Extreme. I have also restored the AEBS with the reset button to factory default and created a new network from scratch with the same result as before.
    Help!!

    scratch that...
I tried before to do the 'alt click version number' trick to bring up v. 7.1.1, but it would only ever reveal 7.2.1 (I tried this yesterday). Today when i tried it on a fluke, 7.1.1 showed up and i've been able to upgrade (er... downgrade?) to that firmware.
    Unfortunately, that didn't work.
But, I figured out what DID WORK:
    Cable Modem --wired-->
WRT54G WiFi Router (DHCP server) --wired-->
APBS(n) *IN LAN PORT, NOT IN WAN PORT*
To get the full network speed, make sure you have "Use Wide Channels" turned on, otherwise you'll only be getting 130Mbit instead of the full 300Mbit speeds (check network utility). Of course, this speed is applicable only to LAN transfers (to your network connected drive, for instance), as your internet speeds will be determined by your ISP...
I've done A MILLION (give or take...) experiments on this router to get both the internet AND the network transfer speeds up to expectation. I'm willing to give some pointers if you have any questions.

  • Airport Express (vs. Airport Extreme) in internet speed

I live in a small dorm room and I have varying internet speeds on my university network. I would therefore like to create my own reliable network to use on my Macbook Pro Retina, iPhone 6, and iPad Air, which I believe all make use of fast connectivity. So my question is that will Airport Extreme increase my internet speed versus the Airport Express? I used an ethernet-USB adapter and got 94mbps download, 94mbps upload and the Wifi network gave me 131mbps DL and 187mbps UL. I know that Extreme offers up to 1.3Gbps and Express up to 300Mbps, but if the ethernet port offers speed likely less than 300Mbps, does it matter which Airport I get?

You should always buy the extreme when you want speed.. a second hand Gen5 AE from ebay is much smaller and neater than the new AC one.. and will give you 450Mbps on 5ghz.. as well as gigabit..
You will need to buy thunderbolt to ethernet adapter.. the USB one is limited.
Internet speed will still be determined by the uni network.. so improvement in that might or might not happen.. 11

  • Wired Internet Speed ridiculously slow

I am running Windows 8 64 bit on an HP Pavilion p7-1414 Desktop PC.
For a while I have had a pretty good experience, but for whatever reason my brother decided he should do a HP System Recovery and completely reinstalled Windows. Anyways, got everything set up again but noticed that the Internet speed was slower than usual. Contacted my ISP and asked about it and they said it wasn't anything wrong with the connection. Before the recovery I did not have this problem, but I noticed that it gets EXTREMELY bad when I install AVG free or even BitDefender, any antivirus besides Norton. I can try downloading say, a game, and the internet speed will start out at the usual 1MB per second, then it will rapidly decrease until it gets to about 15-400kb per second. If I pause and unpause it, it will start higher than 400 but then decrease to its usual speed.
I have tried another reinstallation of Windows, which didn't do any good. I have installed all possible Windows updates and Driver updates.
I just don't know what to do now, has anyone else ran into this problem and managed to fix it?
Edit: I should also mention that for some reason the Wireless adapter will not work on this computer anymore either, this happened after the first reinstallation. I have tried two different networks, neither work on my computer but work flawlessly with my Android phone and Xbox 360.
I'm not sure but maybe the Internet driver has something to do with it? In any case, the one I have is Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30) while the wireless one is: Ralink RT5390R 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you have installed and uninstalled multiple antivirus it is possible that some remnants of one are interferring with another.
It's just a hunch, but that's what I think it is.
I would suggest getting rid of Norton completely since their antivirus costs money and is a resource hog.
There is a program to uninstall it, search for it on google, called nonav.exe (No N.orton A.nti V.irus) and it thoroughly deletes all traces of norton.
As far as wireless goes there might be a switch that isn't obvious.  When you go to device manager, is it installed?

My wifi will not change from off to on. I have done everything possible, including resetting my network settings.  Internet is working fine on tablet etc.

    Hello dthlah,
Thanks for the question. Based on the information you have provided, it sounds like your Wi-Fi option on an iPhone 4S is greyed out. The following article explains this issue and potential resolution:
iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
    1. Verify that airplane mode is off by tapping Settings > Airplane Mode.
    2. Reset the network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Note: This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings
    3. Ensure that your device is using the latest software. To do so, connect your device to your computer and check for updates in iTunes.
    4. If your issue is still unresolved, perform a software restore in iTunes.
If you are still unable to turn Wi-Fi on, please contact Apple for support and service options.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Internet speed too slow in hotspot mode on iPad after upgrade to iOS8

    Problem:
After upgrade from iOS7 to iOS8 my 3G internet speed shows very poor performance in Hotspot mode.
    Before upgrade (on iOS7):
    3G
    without hotspot -- 4 MB/s
in hotspot mode shared over WiFi -- 4 MB/s
    After upgrade (to iOS8):
    3G
    without hotspot -- 4 MB/s
in hotspot mode shared over WiFi, Bluetooth and USB -- speed drops to stable 20-30 KB/s regardless of attached device or network quality
I contacted my 3G operator, they report to have made no changes, and have no clue and suggest me to contact 'equipment manufacturer'.
I have tried different kind of settings, resetting/experimenting with APN/username/pass. The only thing I haven't done so far is I didn't erase/clean reinstall my iPad. But I will do it soon.
    Could you please suggest:
    a) has anyone else faced such a problem?
    b) has anyone have an idea how to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any kind of help.

    Update:
A solution was to leave the 'Hotspot APN' blank and fill out the 'login' field instead with <any> symbols.

  • Internet speed compromised after upgrade to iOS 8

Have recently upgraded to iOS 8 and Internet speed has been drastically reduced on my iPad air (128Gb). Is there anyone out there who can assist? I'm on a weak 3G network.

First try a soft reset.  Hold the home & sleep/wake button down simultaneously., keep holding until you see the Apple logo appear then let go & let the iPad boot normally.
If that doesn't help, go to Settings->General->Reset->Reset All Settings.  You will not lose any data but will have to login to any wifi networks you previously connected with.  You could also just try resetting Network Settings but I find resetting all settings can clear up a bunch of issues including speed & usability.

  • Would upgrading my internet speed improve Netflix performance?

I know there is a lot of controversy surrounding netflix and ISPs which I'm not really interested in. I just know my netflix streaming is terrible right now and I would be willing to upgrade my internet speed if it meant that would improve. Any idea if it would? Thank you/

    NO! Don't do it.
You'll just be throwing more money at Verizon with no change in performance. Realistically you could probably downgrade your speed, save yourself money, and see no change in your Netflix performance.

  • Slow internet speed -upgraded it to highest speed

I have had FiOS internet for about four years and never questioned the speed 10/2, but I had it plugged into the router.  On 3/4, I upgraded to TV FiOS/internet and phone bundle.  I do not have my computer where the router is located now (downstairs) and I had asked them to move it upstairs, but left before they had done it.  When I checked the speed (I guess the wireless speed since it is not plugged in to the router), it was 15.66/10 mbps.  I ordered the 35/35 mbps speed bundle.  I called Verizon and asked them about it and she checked the speed and said that it was "pretty good" considering it is wireless.  What?  I am not getting what I am paying for.  Do I need a DSL filter on all the phone lines?  Do I need a new router (I still have the old one)?  I have read on the community here that everyone has called several times to get an answer to the slow internet speed problem. Does anyone have the 35/35 mbps speed plan and have it work at this speed? I might as well go down to the 15 or 25 plan if that speed is all I am every going to get......But maybe if I go down to 25 plan, I'll get 10 or 15...... I will continue to try and work with Verizon to get this solved.   .Thanks for any help.

  • After latest update, Itunes will not open unless I allow itunes to change screen settings on my laptop. How do I stop this?

I have upgraded to the new version of Itunes 11.1 and everytime I try to open it it asks me to allow changes to be made to my computer. If i click yes it changes my screen size to 64bit so I cant see half the page. If i change the settings back to normal it works until shut down itunes and the reverts back to odd settings. If i click no it will not open at all. Ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling but same thing keeps happening. Can anyone help me please?

Is iTunes endlessly saying "Accessing iTunes Store"? Or is something a bit different going on?

One possibility is that you may need to "Upgrade" your Cable /DSL Modem if you have an older unit.  ISP's that provide your Internet service in recent years have been switching over from DOCSIS 2.1 version Modems to DOCSIS 3.0 version Modems, which handle the new higher data streaming speeds the ISP's are offering.  I would suggest you call your ISP's Technical Support and inquire about this possibility.
