Upgrading ipad with no Software Update  button.

HI
I would like to upgrade my ipad to iOS 5 or iOS 6 but I don't have a Software Update button within Settings.  I have an iphone and MacBook Pro which have both been updated to iOS6 but I'm not sure if I can do the same to the ipad, which is now unable to open contents of various apps without an upgrade.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible?  The Model is MC979LL and the Version is 4.3.5 (8L1).
Many thanks!
Jill

If you have the original iPad you can only upgrade to iOS 5.1.1. All of the other iPads can upgrade to 6.1.2.
Here are the instructions.

Or you can connect the iPad to the computer, launch iTunes. Select the iPad under the devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update

How do I download ios6 on my ipad2 there is no software update in settings and I have a PC?

You won't have software update in settings until you are running iOS 5 or higher.  To update from iOS 4, you have to use iTunes, as explained in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972.

My iPad has no Software update button in the General tab.  How do I fix?

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

  • HT1222 How do I update my first generation iPad without the software update button in the general settings menu?

When I go to my app store the store will load but nothing within the store will load. I haven't updated my Ipad in a long time because the computer died I would use. I have tried different things but can not find a way to update to the new operating systems which is what I believe is causing my problems in the app store.

A first gen iPad should update to iOS 5.1.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple).

  • HT4623 I have a iPad with 4.2, how do I upgrade. I have no software update button?

I have a iPad with 4.2, How do I update? I have no update software button. I need to update to get newsstand.

You only have the software update button once you are running at least iOS 5 on the iPad. You need to update with iTunes on your computer first. You must be running the latest version of iTunes on the computer as well.
This article explains how to update your iPad.

  • HT4623 But my iPad does not have the software update button ....what do I do?

I need to update my IPad . But it does not have " software update" button....any suggestions please????

The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPhone to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPhone under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

You cannot update it if you can't get the latest version of iTunes. Actually, the latest version of iTunes will run in XP if you have Service Pack 2. Also, you posted in the iPad forum, and your profile shows you have an iPad, but in your post, you say it is an iPod. Is it an iPad or an iPod?

  • HT4623 Why can't I see a software update button on my iPad?

I'd like to update my iPad but can't figure out how. There's no " software update" button in my settings.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

Go to Settings > General > About and see what iOS version you are running.  If it is lower than 5, you won't find the software update button.  It was added when iOS 5 came out.  The current iOS is 5.1.1.  To update to the current OS, you'll need to connect to the computer you sync with (this is important - do not connect to a computer you do not sync with as you will lose you apps) and update the software in iTunes.  Once you have updated to the 5.1.1, the software update button will be in Settings going forward.  Make sure you have a lot of time.  Updating from below 5 to 5 or higher is a somewhat lengthy process.

  • HT4623 My iPad does not have the automatic software update and I do not know how to download IOS if under settings there is no software update button available. Do I have to reset my iPad and lose data?

My iPad does not have the automatic software update and I do not know how to get IOS 6 onto it. When I go into settings there is no software update button.

If you are really on iOS 5 then look in Settings > General > Software update.
    Otherwise:
If you are using iOS 4 (or earlier) there is no Software Update in Settings. That feature was first added in iOS 5.
To update you will have to connect your iPad to iTunes on a computer (preferably the one you sync with and backup to).

  • Ok I have an fully upgraded iPad 2 and the volume button don't work but it do with headphones can someone help

Ok I have an fully upgraded iPad 2 and the volume button don't work but it do with headphones can someone help. I try to go to settings and the volume won't go up there either I have the home button gesture and still the same. I try resting my iPad and nothing no sound work unless I have my headphones in. Do anybody know how to fix this

Did you try rebooting the iPad? You will need to have some battery power for this.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
