Upgrading iPhoto problems

I have an older iMac running Maverick and iPhoto 7.1.5. I tried upgrading to the new version. Failed. Then I tried getting iPhoto 8 and that failed too.  Do I need to purchase the new iPhoto?

This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1.

  • Maverick upgrade - iPhoto problems

I have updated my iMac with Maverick but find iPhoto won't work. I get the error message: "You can't' use this version of the application "iPhoto" with this version of OS X. You have "iPhoto" 9.2.3  -  Any ideas what I do now? What's the point of an update to Maverick if this is the result?

You will need to to go the App Store and download iPhoto 9.5.1 (free).

What matters is the version of iPhoto you have on the different machines. Can you tell us what they are, and what exact error message you get.

Do you get this window when you hold down the Command+Option keys and launch iPhoto?
If not then you're not holding down both keys long enough.

  • Problems with upgrading iPhoto?

I´m havint problems to upgrade Iphoto (and garageband). I can see there is an update available, but the meassage I get when I try to upgrade it is:  "To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it.".
I see that others has popped the same question, but I haven´t find any solution. Can anyone help me out?

iPhoto (and, apparently, GarageBand) are licenced to another user name.
Were these installed when you set up the machine? If so, use the account that you registered the machine under.
If you bought them since, then use the account you bought them from.

    Assuming iPhoto 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

We just recently upgraded to yosemite and upgraded iPhoto and now it won't recognize the pictures stored on our external hard drive.  We have all our pictures stored there because the memory on the mac isn't big enough but now it won't pull them up when we go to File/Switch to Library.  I've got iPhoto 9.6.  Help please!

It's connected through a USB port.  Hmmm let me try to see what format it is in.  When I click on the info it says it is in that format (with case-sensitive in there).  It is a 1 TB drive with 102 GB remaining.
That is the problem - the iPhoto library must be on a drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) - you need to move it to a correctly formatted drive and hopefully it had not been permanently damaged by being on an incorrectly frmatted drive

  • How and with what version to upgrade iphoto on MAC OS 10.5.8 with iphoto 08, version 7.1.5.

    I have a MAC OS 10.5.8 with i photo 08, version 7.1.5.
I prepared a photo book to order via the Apple Shop as i did several times before without any problems.
But this time  when it comes to order the book I get the message" Version 07 no longer valid". I need to upgrade iphoto but I don't know how.
How do i upgrade and will the iphoto 11 work on my old MAC? or is there another version I can use
thks a lot beacuse I am a little lost

Before upgrading to OS X 10.9 Mavericks, you need to first purchase a retail install disc of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to install first.
If you are from Canada or France, you need to get this discs from an online Apple website in your country.
Here is the disc you need here in the U.S. Apple Store website.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
After getting this disc and installing the initial version of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, you can use OS X Software Update feature to update to OS X 10.6.8 where that update gives you access to the Mac App Store and the free upgrade to OS X 10.9 Mavericks, if you choose.
Another thing you need to do is to upgrade the amount of system RAM in your Mac.
Currently, your Mac only has 2 GBs of RAM installed. This a bare minimum, paltry amount of RAM for running the newer versions of OS X.
Newer versions of OS X really need a real working, mimimum RAM amount of 4 GBs.
Your Mac model can take a total of 6 GBs of RAM.
I advise installing the complete total 6 GBs of RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
OWC ( macsales.com) has the 6 GB RAM module kit.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/5300DDR2S6GP/
If you are not from the U.S., OWC (macsales.com), I believe, has international shipping of their products.

  • Upgrade iPhoto to open iPhoto library after installing iLife 6

I am a real computer novice and just installed iLife6, which I should not have done because now I have no access to my iPhoto library. It tells me I need to upgrade iPhoto to open the library so I selected "upgrade." Then it tells me there is a problem with some of the files and I need to go to Finder, click Get Info and be sure ownership & permissions are Read & Write in the iPhoto Library. I have tried that repeatedly but it tells me I don't have privileges for all I am trying to access. But I am an administrator on the computer, and every possible file I have opened is now Read & Write. But I continue to be stalled out and still cannot open iPhoto Library. I tried copying the iPhoto library to another computer with iLife 6 already installed, and it tells me some of the files in iPhoto can't be imported because they are in iPhoto Library. I am so confused, and now would like to just remove iLife6 from this computer to get back to my original iPhoto so I can access these Photos but I don't know how to do that either. Does anyone have any ideas at all that can help me please?

    svbp:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Give this a try:download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. Launch iPhoto and try to update the library again.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Upgraded by Mac Pro to Yosemite 10.10.1. Upgraded iPhoto to 9.6 now cannot open iPhoto.

I have a Mac Pro running Yosemite 10.10.1.  I upgraded iPhoto to 9.6 and now cannot open iPhoto. I tried several times but have to force quit.  I used the time machine to go back to before the upgrade but the iPhoto copy is just the same - blank screen with the little worm continually turning.
I do not know where to start

Do you have a backup you can restore the pictures from?
    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

  • Missing photos after upgrading iPhoto

I recently upgraded iPhoto and now many of the  photos are not showing up, mainly the older ones, have I lost them for good? Any help appreciated

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Mac OS X does not offer a Clean install option.    If by clean install you mean erasing the system, that is not recommended unless:
    1. You bought a used/refurbished Mac and there is software on it without any accompanying discs, and it is older than July 20, 2011 in model release:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6413
Or if it is at or newer, then erase it if it has applications installed that would not have been prebundled with it and you have no CDs for those applications.
You don't want someone else's software keys, or accounts, or to be running unlicensed software.  At and newer Macs offer a built-in internet restore for their software with a command-R boot that lets you erase the system with Disk Utility, and then install from the internet the latest operating system.
    2. You have a hardware issue and want to eliminate possible software issues as the cause when troubleshooting a problem all at once.
Issues affecting a new install have to be isolated before you attempt it.   Unless you know it is software or hardware, erasing may only mask other problems.

  • Reverse upgrade iphoto?

I upgraded iphoto (10.7.4) and should have known better...I got a replacement computer from Apple last year (Macbookpro) and something went wrong while copying my iphoto library/changing to Lion ...finally the geniuses figured out how to work it, I ended up with 2 libraries, one of it working, the other one showed "the photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iphoto". Now after the recent update I have the same again ("the photo library...")  and I remember we did not do that last year, instead we told the computer to use another version of iphoto....which I can not find and don't remember how we did it.
I do remember it was a place where I could choose which version I want to work with. Does that make any sense ? Unfortunately I am in the Bahamas right know, can not find where I had written it down nor can I walk into an Apple store.. can somebody help, please?

  • Funky bluetooth keyboard after upgrading iPhoto, Garage Band etc an hour ago

I upgraded iPhoto etc. an hour or so ago. Since then, my Apple Bluetooth keyboard has been behaving strangely (can't make a capital I  using the left shift key; clicking on a document makes it scroll out of control). Help.

Ok, I've resolved this on my machine, at least for the time being.
Here is what I did. I am not advising anyone else to do this and I am in-no-way stating this will fix your problem. I'm just relaying what worked for me. If anyone chooses to try this then it's on their own head!
I opened my Mac Mini and located the Bluetooth circuit board just in front of the rear power button. I removed the small phillips screw holding the board in place and noticed that the connector that connects the board to the main motherboard was not seated well. I removed the connector and reattached it, making sure I felt the 'click' as the connector was pushed home.
I had also read on the net that the routing of the bluetooth ariel cable may cause problems due to interference from the USB ports. I took the opportunity to extract the ariel and run it over the disk and away from the USB ports. Before putting the lid back on I booted up to check Bluetooth was working again.
So, I now have my Mac Mini with Bluetooth working again. We shall see how long this lasts - perhaps the root cause was a loose connection, in which case it may be fixed permanently now. I shall report back in a few weeks.
Be aware that opening your Mac is going to invalidate any warranty. Mine was out of warranty anyway so I was not bothered. I've also got a degree in software and electronic engineering so know my way round the insides of computers. Please make your own assessment of your level of expertise before deciding to try what I did. It may not work for you anyway!
