Upgrading late 2010 MacBook Pro

I have a late 2010 MacBook Pro and was wondering if it was possible to take it to an Apple retail store and possibly have it upgraded. I am aware it's a few years old, but I am also aware that they can upgrade new ones in the store, so I was wondering it it was possible to upgrade mine. Is it?

based on your initial post, you have a 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro; there were no Late 2010 MacBook Pro models. Among the Mid 2010 MacBook Pros, only the 2.4 GHz 13-inch model can support 16 GB of RAM, and then only if it runs OS X 10.7.5 or later. Both the RAM and the SSDs can be non-Apple, as long as they meet the requirements* of your MacBook Pro, and both are easily self-installable. Note that you’ll need a T6 Torx screwdriver to take the four T6 Torx screws out of your current HD (which keep it in place within your MacBook Pro) and put them into your SSD.
* — Look at Chapter 3 of the little white User Guide that came with your MacBook Pro, or just look for compatibility with your model of MacBook Pro when shopping around.

Hi all,
Wanted to ask this question here see if anyone might have a solution to my problem. I have a Late 2010 Macbook Pro 15" which I upgraded to Lion yesteray. Ever since that upgrade when I try to connect to my TV to watch a video no joy the image looks like the colours are out.
I have tried it on different resolutions and always the same. Then for some reason the MacBook Pro split the screen in two. So now I see the right of the screen on the left of the TV and the left on the righ with a big black line done the middle.
Priror to the Lion upgrade everything was fine. Only since Lion has this been a problem.
I am using a Minidisply to HDMI cable to go direct into my Phillips 42" Plasma, and I have not got a clue why this is doing this. The strange thing is it works ok on my Samsung BX2450 down the same cable no problems at all just the TV that has issues.
Any suggestions?

Late 2010 MacBook Pro Cannot Connect to Internet

Hello, First time posting a question here.
I have a late 2010 Macbook Pro 15" i5, 2.4Ghz, currently running 10.6.8. At my apartment the provided wifi has been spotty for several months. In the past I have been able to turn off my airport using the dock at the top of my screen, wait a little while (30 seconds or so) and turn it back on. I would get wifi back and then be able to resume to use the Internet.
Recently, however, I have been having extreme issues with connectivity. I will see full bars on the airport display but my dropbox icon (what I use to test connectivity real quick) will keep indicating that I am not connected to the internet. For the past week I was able to get internet with an ethernet cable plugged into the router, ONLY if my airport was turned off.
Now I cannot even get internet through the ethernet cable.
Here are some things I have been able to eliminate.
Bad computer hardware - My computer instantly connects to the wifi at my family home, on campus and where ever I have ever been. I get reliable, un-interupted internet connectivity.
Bad Wifi signal - All other devices (including the ipad I am writing this on) connect immediately to the wifi with no problems with connectivity.
About my computer:
OS: 10.6.8
CPU: intel i5 2.4 GHz
Memory: 4Gb 1067 MHz DDR3
About my Router:
Ubee DWW365 Wireless Cable Modem
ISP: Charter
I have indeed rebooted my router, but not luck yet.

Advice on upgrading my 2010 MacBook pro

I'm after some advice. I need to purchase a new laptop as my current 2010 MacBook Pro is slowly dying (battery, charger, spinning beach ball). I'm not great with technology obviously, otherwise I wouldn't be asking! Mine is a mid 2010, 13 inch, 2.6GHz, with 4GB RAM and a 320GB SATA Disk and is running current software. I've loved my MBP and it's served me well. It's gotten a touch slow over the years which frustrates me at times, and I find it a little heavy at times. I want it's replacement to be fairly similar in speed, but would definitely like it a little lighter. I think I'd stick with the 13 inch screen too. I do mostly basic stuff with it. Word processing, emails, internet surfing, some photo editing, I have a decent sized itunes library and watch movies etc. I'm open to either a macbook pro or a macbook air.

I have a 2010 MBP and it is not slow. If you are using the latest OSX, Yosemite, install at least 8 GB RAM. Your MBP will accept up to 16 GB RAM. The best sources of RAM are OWC and Crucial.
If you instal a SSD, the performance will be enhanced even more. Just today I received the following SSD information that would be compatible with your MBP;

That is a good price for a 500GB SSD. There certainly are other options to choose from.
For about $250+ you could have a MBP that would perform better that the day you took it out of the box.
You also may have some third party software that may be inhibiting performance. Any AV or so called 'cleaning' applications should be eliminated.

Upgrading late 2008 Macbook Pro to Snow Leopard?

I read some articles that say one should stick with the OS that shipped with one's notebook.
Is this true?
Can I upgrade a Macbook Pro (late 08) to Snow Leopard or is it better to stick with Leopard?
Also, will upgrading delete my files? Ive created some folders under my home folder, would SL erase those?

I installed the 10.6.1 update last night. However, I don't really notice anything different, but I had not had any problems to "fix" anyway. There was also an update (2.1) to the HP printer software, so hopefully that has fixed the problems people have had with some HP printers. My 6988dt had been working fine with just 10.6 over 802.11g wireless, but I other HP printers seem to have been problematic. I don't think you will see much unless you had problems - it was mostly a "bug" fix and stability fix release, so if you weren't experiencing any of the issues it addressed, you won't see any noticeable change.
My most painful part of the whole Snow Leopard upgrade process was having to wait a few days for iSlayer to release his iStat Menu's update
But then, I also always have a current TM backup and SuperDuper clone (on a partitioned 1TB external drive), and 2 additional separate SuperDuper clones on dedicated portable bus-power hard drives (one kept offsite at my work office). So I do not worry too much if something goes flooey as I know I can be back to my previous system state with little effort.

RAM upgrade for 2010 Macbook Pro

I have the 13" Macbook Pro 2010 unibody model which I bought in May 2010. It has 4GB RAM installed when I bought it. I purchased two (4GB) RAM DDR3 204pin 1333Mhz. Will this be compatible? I want to upgrage the RAM to 8GB.

2.0 or 4.0 GB PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs
Max RAM 8.0 GB
For the late 2010 13" MBP it showed these specs:
2.0 or 4.0 GB PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs
Max RAM 4.0 GB
To answer your question no you cannot install that memory you mentioned. It could cause damage to both the memory and to your macbook pro.
Download MacTracker it is a free app that shows specs for almost every Apple device made.

Upgraded my 2010 macbook pro to mountain lion, unable to complete time machine backup using time capsule. Getting error 112

I've tried many of the suggestions from other discussion threads, still unable to get anything to work. Have 4 other computers backing up to the same time capsule, all of them are functioning normally, however they are not upgraded to mountain lion.

This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including your exclusion list. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.
Triple-click the line below to select it:

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy it to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. I'm currently running 10.7.5 on my late 2010 macbook pro.. It tells me that my software is up to date, i downloaded 10.8.4 but it tells me it requires 10.8, what should I do?

Did you download, and pay for, the actual Mountain Lion (10.8.x) upgrade from the App Store? You can't just do a combo update from Lion to 10.8.4...

So by dual-signal, are you referring to 2.5Ghz/5Ghz signal?
I'm pretty sure my Mac mini 2011 has that but for whatever reason I cannot send via AirDrop to the mini. The mini can see other computers like my 2010 MacBook Pro and send files to it, but not in reverse. The MBP is unable to see or send to the mini unless the mini has engaged it to send a file to MBP. Even then it's temporary and the mini will disappear from the MBP's AirDrop radar upon completing the delivery of its file.
So I'm a bit perplexed on how the Mac mini has AirDrop, can see other AirDrop computers and send files to them, but cannot be seen on other Macs to reciprocate.

Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.
3. If you left yourself a free partition on your test drive, try a clean install of Yosemite and set everything up from scratch (do not migrate anything). This will allow you to see whether your problems with it were related to something in your Snow Leopard system.

I have a similar question.. 13" macbook pro, mid 2010- having problems with spinning beach ball.. like someone from Mars has taken over the computer..   - the specs are below..   would it help if I added more RAM? The only observations are that the backup drive is deemed too small and the quite long list of diagnostic reports dated between Jan 18, 2015 (which I believe is the day I upgraded to Yosemite) & today the latest Yosemite update was installed on Jan 28, 2015

Unfortunately, no you can't.
Just to be clear. Your computer will support AirPlay it's just AirPlay Mirroring that requires newer hardware.

In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

I've just bought a new late 2012 27" iMac and also have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro.
I also purchased a Thunderbolt cable, is there anyway I can use this to connect the two? If not... do I have any options for file sharing between the two?

The Thunderbolt cable is useless to connect both Macs. Mid 2010 MacBooks Pro have got Mini DisplayPort, and Mini DisplayPort isn't compatible with Thunderbolt.
If you want to use Target Disk Mode in order to connect both Macs, you have to buy two things: the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, and a FireWire cable to connect the adapter and the MacBook. You have to connect the Thunderbolt adapter to the Thunderbolt port of the iMac.
Then, if you want to transfer old files from the backup, you can use Migration Assistant if you want to migrate applications and user accounts (if you haven't set up the iMac, use Setup Assistant. If you want to transfer individual files, use Target Disk Mode
