Upgrading Mac Pro - How Difficult will it be?
I am thinking about purchasing a Mac Pro with one 2.8GHz quad-core "Nehalem" processor and one 1TB hard drive. I like the idea of upgrading the system myself.
How difficult will it be to install a RAID card later? Any suggestions that I should keep in mind when I am planning to make this upgrade? Lessons learned? Any specific type/brand I should be looking to purchase?
Thank you!
how hard is it to upgrade the processor(s)?
I would liken upgrading processors to changing the water pump in a car. There is substantial dis-assembly and re-assembly, and care must be used to avoid collateral damage. There may be need for some improvisation. The process is straightforward. "It's not difficult, just complicated."
One of the first to attempt it, the principal of the tech site Anandtech, trashed one of the sockets on his processor board in the process and was forced to buy a new processor board to complete his project and illustrated review. The complete gory details are on his site.
In my opinion, most users are far better off trading in their older Mac for a faster one, when that is what is needed. Conserve your time and anergy for what you are best at -- which for most people is not likely to be computer surgery.
If you are anxious about performance, by far the best performer for less than the cost of TWO Mac Pros is the 3.33 GHz 6-processor (available as a build-to-order off the Quad Processor selection), It is "only" 1+1/2 times the cost of base model

I have a pre-2008 Mac PRO how do I upgrade to Mountain Lion?
I have a pre-2008 Mac PRO how do I upgrade to Mountain Lion? On the Apple's site on upgrading (http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/), I see that "Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)" is required for the upgrade. What's up with that?
Will upgrading of the GPU do the trick?
I'm curretly on Snow Leopard, will I be limited to Lion?

My 2006 - 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV 1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.
there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up. Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests. But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum. there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc. -
i have an app that i want to download on my mac pro. it will not let me because it was not approved. i know the app is ok. how do i get it downloaded?
What are you referring with not approved? What happens when you try to download it? If you see an error, copy it here. At first, I suspect that Gatekeeper may be the reason why you can't install that app > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5290?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

On my Mac Pro how can I get voiceover to start reading at a specific point in a document, and then continue on to the next paragraph and so on? Thank you. Ed
Welcome to the Apple family!!!!
How can I cause the VO cursor(box) show-up/start?
Press Control-Option and F5. The F5 key is located on the top row of keys 6th key over. This is a toggling "Keyboard Shortcut" for turning VoiceOver on and off.
How can I move the VO cursor to various sentences or paragraphs of an article and have it start reading ... and perhaps even continue reading on to the next paragraph(s) ... even to the end of the article?
How to read a website with VoiceOver
Step 1: Go to the Website
A quick keyboard shortcut is Command-L. This will jump you up to the address bar. Start typing where you want to go. i.e "www.thewebsite.com"
Step 2: Working with Webpage
VoiceOver will automatically start reading the website. You can pause the speech by hitting the 'Control Button'.
If VoiceOver does not being reading the webpage, then you might have to "Interact" with it. If VoiceOver say "HTML Content" then press Control-Option-Space-Down Arrow to interact with the webpage.
Use Control-Option-Right Arrow to move throught the website. This will speak "EVERYTHING" on the page.
Most website that I've found have their articles labeled as 'Heading'. You can jump from heading to heading, by pressing Control-Option-Shift-H.
If you'd like an itemized alphabetical listing of the site, press Control-Option-I
Press Control-Option-Space on the link or article you want to view.
Step 3. Reading from Top to Bottom
Once you found and clicked on the the article/link, use the same 'Heading' command, Control-Option-Shift-H to find the title.
After finding the title, press Control-Option-A will start reading from the title on.
Note: If there are any other items (ads, pictures, etc) it will read those too.
Tip: You might be able to activate a feature called the 'Reader'. The Reader isolates the article and elimanates the ads The keyboard command is Shift-Command-R. You can also find it in the Menu Bar (Command-Option-M) under the word 'View' then 'Show Reader'.
I am using a MACPro with OSX, probably Mavericks 10.9 (where would I look to see if that is the correct information?)
You can find this information under the 'Apple menu' in the Menu Bar. To access the Menu Bar, press Control-Option-M.
Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac. This will open up another window. Use Control-Option-Right Arrow until you hear 'Version'. If you purchased it brand new from Apple within the last six month, more than likely you have Mavericks.

Chapter 6: Browsing the internet
Apple Accessibility Resource Page
The 'Commands Help' Voiceover Menu. Control-Option-H-H. (hit H twice) is my best friend. It's a searchable VoiceOver Menu with most of the VoiceOver command. Example: You are looking for the 'Read Current Paragraph' keyboard command. Press Control-Option-H-H and then type Paragraph. It will then bring up all the commands with the word paragraph. I believe there are three.
As from the Trackpad Commands, I've copied and pasted below from Appendix A: Commands and Gestures
VoiceOver standard gestures
If you’re using a Multi-Touch trackpad, you can use VoiceOver gestures. VoiceOver provides a set of standard gestures for navigating and interacting with items on the screen. You can’t modify this set of gestures.
NOTE:Gestures that don’t mention a specific number of fingers are single-finger gestures.
General
Enable the Trackpad Commander and VoiceOver gestures
VO-Two-finger rotate clockwise
Disable the Trackpad Commander and VoiceOver gestures
VO-Two-finger rotate counterclockwise
Turn the screen curtain on or off
Three-finger triple-tap

Move the VoiceOver cursor to the next item
Flick right
Move the VoiceOver cursor to the previous item
Flick left
Move content or the scroll bar (depending on the Trackpad Commander setting)
Three-finger flick in any direction
Go to the Dock
This gesture moves the VoiceOver cursor to the Dock wherever it’s positioned on the screen
Two-finger double-tap near the bottom of the trackpad
Go to the menu bar
Two-finger double-tap near the top of the trackpad
Open the Application Chooser
Two-finger double-tap on the left side of the trackpad
Open the Window Chooser
Two-finger double-tap on the right side of the trackpad

Press the Command key while touching a finger on the trackpad
Rotor
Change the rotor settings
Two-finger rotate
Move to the previous item based on the rotor setting
Flick up
Move to the next item based on the rotor setting
Flick down
To customize other gestures by assigning VoiceOver commands to them, use the Trackpad Commander.
Assigning VoiceOver commands to gestures
If you need a reminder about what a gesture does, press VO-K to start keyboard help, and then use the gesture on the trackpad and listen to the description.

Or sell and buy ref'd 2010 or 2009 ($2100), you should be able to get $850+ for yours if in good condition.
And this section is for 2009/2010 (Nehalem, DDR3, UEFI 2.x) and another for 2008 and earlier (use DDR2 FBDIMMs and front side bus, 5100-5400 Xeon series) -
Using the New Mac Pro (can) - AE will not let me use Race Traced 3-D
Using the New Mac Pro (can) - AE will not let me use Race Traced 3-D
Hi, I'm using the new Mac Pro
2.7 GHz 12-core Intel Xeon E5
64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
OSX 10.9.2
I'm using After Effects 12.2.1.5
When I attempt to invoke the race trace 3D renderer in a comp, I get this error
"After Effects Error: Ray-traced 3D: Out of paged mapped memory for ray tracer. Your project may exceed GPU limits. Try closing other applications. Try updating the CUDA driver. (5070::2)"
My preferences are set to use the CPU for Raytraced 3D since I do not have an Nvidia card.
So, obviously there is an issue here in that it thinks I have an Nvidia card.
I know (or assume I know) the cause for this is that when I set up this machine, I used Apple's migration assistant to move most of my data over from the previous gen Mac Pro which DID have a CUDA card.
So my question is, what files can I delete/reset to cause After Effects to no longer look for CUDA files that do not exist on this machine?
I do not have the CUDA control panel in System Prefs, so THAT did not carry over.
Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks!> I know (or assume I know) the cause for this is that when I set up this machine, I used Apple's migration assistant to move most of my data over from the previous gen Mac Pro which DID have a CUDA card.
Ugh. That causes so many problems.
The first thing to try is deleting the CUDA frameworks from your Mac: Look in /Library/Frameworks for the CUDA.Framework and get rid of it. -

If you are still within your 15 day return period, nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick. (Ask to speak to a senior advisor.)

If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11 (includes iDVD) on disk (don't get the download) for about $39.

Since installing Premiere Pro CC 2014 upgrade, Mac Pro jumpy video and freezes constantly
Since installing Premiere Pro CC 2014 upgrade, Mac Pro jumpy video and freezes constantly. Worked perfectly before. Anyone else finding these issues? I'm running a quad core Mac Pro, so it's definitely not the hardware.
I've maxed out the memory assignment, but this isn't a memory problem per se.
It looks like certain Premiere Pro conditions are associated with a huge increase in kernel_task memory, zeroing out any available free memory. In my case it seems to be associated with effects applied to titles or jpgs or imported psd (Photoshop) files.
Program restart pulls kernel memory back to the 1.3gb normal size.
Here's where I am at startup:

My daughter wants a new Mac Pro; however, she will be living in London, England (we live in New Mexico). My question is...Must she buy a "special" Mac Pro for her needs in London, or can she use an adaptor for power?
Your welcome. Most electronics have universal power supplies that can deal with overseas power standards - before she starts getting lots of adaptors with transformers, check the manual or specifications online for her equipment. Often a simple adaptor that just adapts the physical US style plug to the UK style, or even better and cleaner, a new power cord, is all that is required. Found this out when I went overseas myself last year. And it can be overwhelming at first!
Even though it's PC world, after doing a quick google search for you it's a pretty comprehensive and easy to read article:

Graphics Upgrade Mac Pro 1.1 change 7300 to 8800 GT
Hi Everyone.
I would like to clarify the situation with my upgrade Mac Pro. I bought on Ebay video card 8800GT Mac Upgrade Kit(Ex. for 1.1 mac pro), at that time I had system 10.4.1 and standard 7300. Then I put in 8800 instead of 7300, and plugged the *monitor in 8800* - the picture was not at all. I updated the system to 10.5.5 (with original Upgrade Disk) and plugged the slot 8800 in the third, and 7300 remained in place (1st slot). When I plugged the monitor cable back in 8800, the picture appeared, but the download Mac OS stayed on the apple loading. I bought a snow leopard in the hope that it works as it should. But everything still works the same way, if i connect the monitor to the 8800GT, load stops at the apple, if the 7300 - works. Interestingly, if in worked system disconnect the monitor cable from the 8800Gt and plugged in 7300, appears the picture of the desktop. What's the problem. What should I do? Save me, help me!
