Upgrading Mac Pro OS

I have a Mac Pro (early 2009)
  System Version:
Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
I have XP installed on Bootcamp.  The keyboard control keys don't seem to work properly.
I would like to upgrade the OS and Bootcamp version.
Which is the best OS to upgrade to?
What is the best way to upgrade?
I am not very proficient in the use of Macs
I would be very grateful for your advice/sugestions
Thank you
Mitch

Mitch,
is it an Early 2009 Mac Pro which you have, or an Early 2009 MacBook Pro? (They’re two different computers.)
Your Boot Camp support drivers for Windows XP will be on one of your computer’s grey installation DVDs which originally came in the box with your computer. After installing those support drivers, you can then run Apple Software Update from within Windows XP to see if any newer versions of those drivers are downloadable from Apple.
Regarding the best OS to upgrade to, do you mean the best version of OS X, or the best version of Windows? How would you define “best”?

You need MS Office 2011 if you've installed Lion.  Previous versions of Office don't work with Lion.

Since installing Premiere Pro CC 2014 upgrade, Mac Pro jumpy video and freezes constantly. Worked perfectly before. Anyone else finding these issues? I'm running a quad core Mac Pro, so it's definitely not the hardware.

I've maxed out the memory assignment, but this isn't a memory problem per se.
It looks like certain Premiere Pro conditions are associated with a huge increase in kernel_task memory, zeroing out any available free memory.  In my case it seems to be associated with effects applied to titles or jpgs  or imported psd (Photoshop) files.
Program restart pulls kernel memory back to the 1.3gb normal size.
Here's where I am at startup:

  • Graphics Upgrade Mac Pro 1.1 change 7300 to 8800 GT

    Hi Everyone.
I would like to clarify the situation with my upgrade Mac Pro. I bought on Ebay video card 8800GT Mac Upgrade Kit(Ex. for 1.1 mac pro), at that time I had system 10.4.1 and standard 7300. Then I put in 8800 instead of 7300, and plugged the *monitor in 8800* - the picture was not at all. I updated the system to 10.5.5 (with original Upgrade Disk) and plugged the slot 8800 in the third, and 7300 remained in place (1st slot). When I plugged the monitor cable back in 8800, the picture appeared, but the download Mac OS stayed on the apple loading. I bought a snow leopard in the hope that it works as it should. But everything still works the same way, if i connect the monitor to the 8800GT, load stops at the apple, if the 7300 - works. Interestingly, if in worked system disconnect the monitor cable from the 8800Gt and plugged in 7300, appears the picture of the desktop. What's the problem. What should I do? Save me, help me!
Thank you all. Sory for badly Eng 8)

  • Upgrading Mac Pro 3.1 (early 2008) worth it ?

    Hi
I was wondering if it´s still worth to upgrade my mac pro 3.1 (early 2008) .....  or I should sell it and buy maybe the mac pro 2010 or anything like that...
    my system is
    2,8 Ghz 8-Core
    8 gb 800 Mhz DDR2 ram
Ati radeon 2600 (i think it slows everything down.... )
system HD: WD Velocyraptor 10000kb/s (320 GB)
second HD: WD hd 7200kb/s  (1 TB)
third HD: WD hd (it´s slow, the one that apple built in mac pro)
    SNOW LEOPARD 10.6.8
to be honest I think my mac is too slow... especially loading from HD or something takes time and the beachball appears often... I mainly work with Logic and its not really nice.... bad performance... lags and so on...
I really need another video card.... in logic pro everything lags and I think its because of the slow video card...... also I think my RAM is too slow (800mhz)
and I thinking about getting a SSD Samsung HD and remove the slow third HD apple built in...
what do you think? this would be not cheap upgrade for me.... and I think about selling my mac pro 2008 and getting a newer one... from 2010 or anything like that...
    thank you guys!

    Open the side door.
If your software required PowerPC / Rosetta then Lion is not for you.
I would ask in Logic Community what they recommend.
I think you can improve your system, disk drives are something you need no matter what and you wouldn't be using disks from 2007. I would think 16GB RAM would make more sense as next step and then play safe with Apple ATI 5x70 for $249.
Hopefull you have backups but yes, rotate out and clone onto new drives.

  • Upgrading Mac Pro 3,1 for CS5

We have 2 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 need to update to use Adobe CS5, and I think we may need some hardware/software upgrade to boost the performance and would like to have some suggestion. Here is the list of hardware:
      Model Name:          Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacPro3,1
      Processor Name:          Quad-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed:          2.8 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          2
      Total Number Of Cores:          8
L2 Cache (per processor):          12 MB
      Memory:          10 GB
      Bus Speed:          1.6 GHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MP31.006C.B05
      SMC Version (system):          1.25f4
    OS:
It is currently running 10.5, so the OS should need to upgrade to 10.6 for better security and stability and also feature. I would like to know if running Snow Leopard in native 64-bit kernel will benefit CS5?
    RAM:
Current the RAM is 1GBx6 + 2GBx2, so there is only 2 spare RAM slot left. Perhaps add to 2x4GB or 2x2GB depends on the budget.
    HDD:
Perhaps we will request if WD VelociRaptor or Intel SSD. Since the HDD are loading into the slot so the connector need to be in place. I think the VelociRaptor should able to slide into the slot by mounting to the HDD mount comes with the Mac Pro chassis, but seems most SSD are in 2.5" form factor, and the mount doesn't fit, any suggestion? Thanks.
    Graphic:
Will CS5 leverage the core image or core animation of OSX so a modern card with more memory will render thing faster? Which graphic card upgrade can this Mac Pro use?
Any hints will be appreciated, thank you!

  • Upgrade mac pro or buy new imac

Really need some help here.  My base machine is a quad-core Nehalem Mac Pro running at 3.33 with 8Gb of RAM and using a ATI Radeon HD 5870 video card.  My choices are:
Buy a new iMac 3.4 Ghz quad core i7, 16 Gb RAM, nVidia GTX 680MX, 750 Gb SSD drive (about $3500)
    OR
Buy 16 Gb RAM, nVidia GTX 680 (about 900 dollars)
Is there much of a performance differece between the 2 to justify the difference in cost?

The Mac Pro you own has way more headroom to upgrade for short money.
The 2009 and later can upgrade RAM DIMM modules by the each -- don't buy new memory modules for these Macs smaller than 8GB per module (cheaper than two 4GB). These are as cheap as US$70 + shipping from Mac-Centric vendors such as Data Memory Systems:

  • Upgraded Mac Pro, now purchased iTunes HD movies won't play

I just upgraded my Mac Pro (2006) to a Mac Pro (2008) so it would be a little faster, be Mountain Lion compliant, etc.  The new Mac Pro has an ATI Radeon HD 5770 and I am continuing to use my 30" Cinema display.
Now when I try to watch a purchased iTunes movie or TV show that I had previously purchased on my old Mac Pro, I get the "This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)" message.  When I look at the show listing in iTunes, thay have the joint HD-SD emblem, so they should be able to be played in the lower resolution, correct?
I can't believe that with all of the apple products and media I have purchased, everything 100% apple, I am no longer able to watch apple movies!
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

  • Upgrading Mac Pro Graphics

Currently, I own a Mac Pro 2, 1 with 2x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors, 4 GB of memory (which I soon plan to double- making it 8 GB), a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card, and a 30" Apple Display.
I want to start playing a few games which the NVIDIA obviously can't seem to handle. I also want to increase my computer's performance in After Effects and Final Cut Pro.
What would be my best option when upgrading my graphics card? Should I replace it or add an additional card? Thank You for your help.

I'm looking to upgrade my video card, as well, but from a Nvidia 8800GT.
I've yet to upgrade much hardware on the Mac Pro so I'm a little new to this, can I get any ATI 4870, pop it in, and expect it to work? I ask because I see ATI Radeon 4870's on Newegg for like half of the price of the ones on Apple's site.

  • Upgrading Mac Pro (Rev1) Video card to 8800GT - Win XP OK?

    Hi all,
I have a Rev1 Mac Pro with the ATI X1900 graphics card. I'd like to order the Apple upgrade to the Nvidia 8800GT for better performance running games in Windows.
Currently, I have an XP SP3 Boot Camp partition. I've read some posts about problems users have had with the 8800 upgrade under XP.
Can anyone confirm that the 8800 upgrade will work under XP, or if I should switch to Vista? I'm anticipating sticking with DX9 unless that would make a difference in terms of compatibility.
    Thanks for any advice!

You can use any PC card for Windows only. I know there were problems in the past with XP drivers, but don't know if that is still true today (I'd be surprised, it is after all basically G92 series card, which is very common).
Personally, I think Vista 64-bit just makes more sense with Mac Pro at this point, more RAM, dual cpu, and it isn't like you don't have the power to run or that they would run poorly on that hardware.
Might give you some ideas games on Mac Pro running Vista:

  • Upgrading mac pro video card questions

I want to upgrade my video card, I currently have a 7300 gt, and my mac pro is a 2007. Will any video card that uses the same type of pci slot work or does the card have to be specially made for macs. Also what would be the best upgrade for my mac, i read the 8800 gtx wont work, will radeon 2600 work?

Yes, the video card has to be made to work with Mac Pros and I upgraded my 2007 Mac with the 2600 XT and it works great. A version of the 8800 is suppose to be in the works, but a release date is unknown.

  • Upgrading Mac Pro's 2.8s to 3.2s

I'm about to purchase a new Mac Pro, and I'm trying to determine if it's feasible(not to hard) to get the 2 2.8 processors, and then down the road, upgrade then to 3.2 processors. Would this be somewthing that wouldnt be to hard, or would it be a major undertaking.

It may or may not work depending on finding a set but cost is often harder to justify even with the physical work. A year from now, maybe just sell and buy the 3rd generation when it comes out.

    Hi there,
I'm a photographer and I use my Mac Pro 1,1 most of all with Lightroom 3. I'd love to upgrade to a new Mac Pro, but no budget at the moment, so I'm looking for solutions that would allow Lightroom to work faster. Would upgrading the graphic card make a great difference? If yes, wich one should I buy?
