Upgrading mac to edit hd-cam footage

I've got a MacPro Quad 2.66, 1 gig memory, with 1 Radeon X1900.
I've got to edit some hd-cam footage and was wondering what i would need to upgrade to be able to do it without tearing whats left of my hair out!
Any ideas?

You'll need is a RAID array of some kind, to support the data rate of HDCam video. And a good way to monitor it.
Proper HD monitors are hellaciously expensive, many of us make due with a tube-based NTSC monitor for color correction. For this you'll need a video card, from either BlackMagic or AJA. Apple Cinema displays can display full 1080 lines of resolution, with good enough color for reference, but not for color correction, and they won't accurately display interlacing.
Larry Jordan has a nice article on his fine web site about equipping your Final Cut Pro system, it's a great place to start.

  • MacPro and Editing Red Camera footage in FCP

Hi, I'm looking to but a Mac Pro, but am not sure the most economical spec required to edit 4K fotage from the Red, Rendering etc. I don't want frustration. I'm looking at 8-Core,4.64GHz, 16G RAM, but would the 1G video card from Apple the work for this or do I need a Ndivia 1G card? I'm told I need to get the 1G Ndivia...is that so?

1 - Will I be able to edit with both the Panasonic and Sony footage in my timeline??
Yes, but what is your intended timeline format? You might want to transcode the XDCAM HD to DCPRO HD and edit in a DVCPRO HD timeline rather than visa versa, or perhaps transcode both the XDCAM HD and DVCPRO HD sources to your intermediate tiemline format just to make your life easier.
2 - Do I need extra software to play the Sony XD Cam footage??
No, assuming you are running FCP 5.1.2 or later, but if you will need to ingest the footage from XDCAM disc yourself then you'll need Sony's free XDCAM Transfer software to bring it in.
3 - is there something else that could cause a problem??
I guess a freak wave could come out of nowhere ...

  • Building a mac for editing?

It is time for me to get a new computer for video editing and from what I hear it is much cheaper to buy the parts and build a computer that will end up being faster and better for video editing. At my last internship the owners built their macs for $800-$900 and they could edit any HD footage using FCP/After Effects and Maya flawlessly. When I try to search this all I see is "hackintosh" and PC's with mac operating systems. Is there a way to build a mac? anyone have a good tutorial or parts list? Is it a good idea to use PC pieces? Would I be better off just buying the 1200$ iMac from best buy? i currently own the older version of this iMac and it cant even watch HD footage in FCP.

Being that this is Apple's discussion boards, it's probably inappropriate to get into a discussion about unauthorized 'hackintosh' solutions. But if you're serious about video production, and need something that you can depend on, then you definitely want to stick with an actual Mac. While some of the hackintosh users have had great experiences building their own boxes, they have universally all had to do a lot of additional tinkering, and had problems with compatibility and updates over the life of their machine. That may not be so bad if you're just goofing around and don't depend on the machine for anything, but it's an absolute dealbreaker if you use the machine professionally.
The good news is that unless you're doing some seriously advanced stuff, you can do a lot on a fairly modest Mac these days. 15 or 17 inch MacBook Pro's (paired with an external drive), and an iMac (ideally also paired with an external drive) are solid solutions even when editing HD video (assuming you're not doing anything too effects-heavy), and a Mac Pro (which can easily accommmodate several internal drives) can handle just about anything you can throw at it. While Mac Pro's are expensive to start and just skyrocket upwards, they're extremely powerful and reliable (designed from the ground up to be 'always-on') and even the base model is pretty capable for video production.
Whichever route you go, opt for upgraded graphics/GPU (if it's available), and you'll want to aim for 8GB RAM (on iMac and Mac Pro, you have the option of 16GB or more). A second hard drive is also highly recommended (for your cache and data files).
    Good luck!

  • Aperture and ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition

I have noticed a few people on this board have the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition (256MB- G5 only) listed on thier specs on the bottom of posts
so I was wondering what your experience using this card is like with Aperture, even-though it I realize that it is not the current top of the line card ?
How about a rating from 0 to 5 stars where 5 would be the best currently available.

P.S lets not get into a p**** match over what IS the best video card for Aperture; I am just looking for subjective views on THIS card!

I have just the card you mentioned.
I think how happy you'd be with it depends on what kinds of files you are using. I work with TIFF files because my camera is not supported, and performance with those is better than with true RAW files.
I generally do not see much delay but a few adjustmnet tools (Shadows & Highlights & Spot/Patch) can get a bit pokey.
Honestly if I were upgrading my card all over again I would bit the bullet and get the x800XT, which I am mulling over even now... I was hoping it might drop a bit more in price but it does not seem to be doing so.
If you want an absolute rating I guess I'd give it three stars, though again that is with the files that I use. For other larger RAW formats like D2H files and such, I think it's more of a two.
One last thing to note is that I have not tired other raw formats since the update, so it might be upgraded from a two... I was waiting to see what kind of speedup Aperture 1.1 offered in addition to just the system update. I'll report back when that update comes out.

  • XD Cam Footage

I am using CS4, and I was given XD Cam Footage.  I know Premiere
can bring in the MP4 footage that XD Cam shoots on, but I was told it was better to transcode the footage to .MXF files?
Is that a better workflow?  And if so, is there a good free Transcode software I should use for a PC that takes MP4 files and converts them to .MXF files?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Sony site has a free download for both mac & pc called xdcam clip browser, used mostly for xdcam ex cameras.
    http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-xdcamexsite/resource.downloads.bbsccms-assets-micro-xdc amex-downloads-XDCAMEXClipBrowserWindowsMac.shtml
You can then take the .mp4 files, view them and make them .mxf files.
We edit on CS3 PP with Matrox boards and PP reads the .mp4 files natively, and 720p or 1080p projects without render.
    Hope this helps.

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Edition will not work with leopard

When I installed a new ATI Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Edition, 256MB; my Dual 2 GHz G5 (June 2004) will not allow me to drive my Apple Cinema Display while running under leopard, (neither 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 with Leopard Graphics Update).
The mac starts up as usual and gets to the white screen with Apple logo -then the progress ring eventually stalls. The mouse pointer becomes visible and can be moved freely around this screen.
I can connect from other macs on the network and navigate files, but screen sharing results in an all black window.
The Radeon 9600 works fine if I start up the mac with the Tiger installation disk.
I have tried every suggestion that I could find on these boards and elsewhere: zapped the pram, reset the SMU, installed older ATI Drivers, etc...
Of course the G5 is far out of warranty. I've been running Leopard since the day it shipped - so that's out of warranty now, and there is little help to be found on the ATI/AMD website. I'm afraid I'll have to return the card before Apple releases another graphics update.
The stock graphics card that came with this mac is the nVIDIA 64MB GeForce FX 5200 - but it's having trouble keeping up with Leopard's demands - my isight barely works, most special effects in iChat and PhotoBooth are unusable, and of course I'm not given the option to use a transparent menu bar,
I am really good at swapping video cards in the G5 now - but I'm so frustrated.
Does anyone else have any suggestions?
    thanks

  • CC & PS WON'T LAUNCH / BRIDGE WON'T LET ME EDIT IN CAMERA RAW

I'm on Mac OS X. First problem I encountered today was that Bridge would not let me edit in Camera Raw. It gave me this warning:
Camera Raw editing is not enabled.
Camera Raw editing requires that a qualifying product
has been launched at least once to enable this feature
I tried launching PS and my short cut bounces in my dock like it is going to open, then nothing happens. Same thing when I try to launch CC or the Uninstall manager. So I found on a different forum to run the Adobe Cleaner and it did the same thing. Have many projects I have to complete for my job. Thanks in advance for any help!

...Turns out the ONE obvious thing I hadn't tried was to go into the CC App itself, into preferences, then log out of my Adobe account and back in again - fixed the issue!
I couldn't believe its so simple and feel a bit stupid - but I had completely uninstalled the main CC App then re-downloaded it from Adobe, it downloaded already logged in as I was logged in on the website.
I hope this helps someone else with the same issue, as I had scoured the forums and the Adobe FAQ pages and hadn't found any solution. I stumbled across this whilst waiting for an agent to answer on the live chat!

  • Can I use Red Cam footage in FCE4

An actor friend of mine has shot a short film with a Red Cam and wants me to edit it.  I assume I'll have to convert it, but can I bring that footage into FCE4, and if so what codec should I use?  And how do I convert it, what program should be used.  When I'm finished editing what codec should I use to export it.  He wants to enter this film in some festivals so we want the quality to be as good as possible.  How will the finished exported quality compare to the original Red Cam footage?  I assume there will be a quality loss, but how much?  And are there any other issues I should be aware of?  Thanks very much--jqs

I don't know whether it will work with some sort of workflow that substitutes AIC foor Pro Res or not. I referred  you to the FCP article so you would see there are a number of moving parts involved. Although I don't know of FCE users editing RED, that's not to say it can't be done. Try some work-arounds and see (and let us know). Alternatively If you know someone with FCP, possibly they would allow you to cut it on their system?
    Good luck.

BTW, I don't think it's possible to unmark this question as solved. If you're not getting views because people assume it's closed, you could always post another question.

How import AVI files to my I Mac for editing in Final Cut?

You first convert them to ProRes with Compressor or MPEG STREAMCLIP, then import the ProRes files into FCP.  FCP doesn't work with the AVI container...footage must be Quicktime, and must be in a codec FCP works with.

  • Editing multi-camera in CS6

    Looking for this page:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/editing-multi-camera-sequences.html
But for CS6, not CS5.5 and earlier. This stuff has changed for CS6, but I can't seem to find the help documents that talk about it, and we don't yet have the PDFs to look stuff up in. Anyone show me where to find it?

There is a pretty simple way to sync multiple tracks of video on the timeline using unnumbered clip markers.  Basically you find the frame in each track you want the all the tracks to sync to and in each track add an unnumber marker at that point.  Then there is a command that will move the tracks to line up those unnumbered markers and, shazam, you are synced!  Here is an excerpt from a help discussion from Adobe:
    Synchronize clips with markers
Make sure that you’ve marked the sync points for each camera’s footage before you attempt to synchronize them. You can mark the sync points by setting similarly numbered markers for each clip or by reassigning each clip’s timecode. (See Add markers and Set timecode manually for a clip.)
Note:  Premiere Pro uses an overwrite edit when synchronizing clips. Take care not to overwrite adjacent clips if you have multiple clips on the same track.
Select the clips you want to synchronize.
Target a track (by clicking its track header) to align the other clips to it. For example, if you synchronize clips on their Out point, the end of each clip aligns with the Out point of the targeted track. A clip will be trimmed if synchronization causes its In point to fall before the sequence zero point.
Note:  If one track of a linked audio/video pair is unselected, the pair will become out of sync. Out-of-sync indicators will appear on the clips.
Choose Clip > Synchronize, and then choose one of the following options:
    Clip Start
Synchronizes clips at their In points.
    Clip End
Synchronizes clips at their Out points.
    Timecode
Synchronizes clips to the specified timecode. If you use the hours value in source timecode as a camera designator, select the Ignore Hours option to use only minutes, seconds, and frames to synchronize clips.
    Numbered Clip Marker
Synchronizes clips to the specified numbered clip marker. Choose the marker number to use from the Marker menu.
You can also use the Synchronize command to sync several video clips on separate tracks or unlinked audio and video tracks when you are not editing a multi-camera sequence.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Editing multi‑camera sequences (CS6)

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/editing-multi-camera-sequences1.html

According to the tutorial at http://www.video2brain.com/en/videos-13067.htm audio now defaults not to Track 1 of the source sequence as it used to, but to the video first selected when choosing between the multiple cameras.
I understand TimB was wishing to mix audio in the audio mixer in the source sequences and apply that to the multicam sequence without export audio and re-importing.
According to my notes to self in June 2012 when I used CS6 to do a multicam project, I wrote:
“To enable audio for all cameras, right click on the Source Sequence and ‘Open in Timeline’
Enable all the audio tracks you want.”
    And that was all.
However the PremPro instructions for CS6 says:
Enabling audio in the multi-camera source sequence
By default, Premiere Pro only enables audio channel one in the multi-camera source sequence. For multi-camera editing workflow, enable each audio track manually before editing the target sequence. To enable audio tracks for the multi-camera source sequence, do the following:
    1. Open the multi-camera source sequence by selecting the multi-camera source sequence icon in the Project panel, right-click
(Win) or Ctrl-click (Mac OS) the icon, and then choose Open In Timeline.
    2. The Timeline opens. Select the audio tracks, and then enable the other audio tracks by clicking the Toggle Track Output
    button for each audio track.
    3. Now that all audio tracks are enabled, you can close the sequence
This is how I remember it but it doesn’t gel with TimB’s post. There are two sections in the Help pdf, one for CS5.5 (and I think CS5) and a separate one for CS6 as quoted above.

  • Synchronize 2 camera footage -- How to nudge smaller than frame increments

When synchronizing dual camera footage in FCP, my method of lining up audio events, how do I nudge the tracks closer together without snapping to the frame? In Pro Tools, it is called Spot editing. I can't find info about this in FCP Help. Sorry for the newbie question. Thanks for your help.

With video you can only edit down to the frame level. In fact I don't know of any video editors that let you move beyond frames as that's how video operates. You can edit and slip audio on a sub-frame level. Look in the manual under sub-frame audio editing for an explanation on how to do it as it's a tricky (but useful) feature.
