Upgrading Macbook 2008

Hi, im looking to upgrade my macbook late 2008 aluminum edition. I want to add more memory and a new hard drive, i done some reserch to see what is compatitable so i know what to buy, but i just want to make sure the parts will work before i buy them
Here is what i am looking to install:
RAM:
8GB (2x 4GB) DDR3 SODIMM (204 pin) 1066Mhz PC3 8500
Hard Drive:
M8 1TB 2.5 inch SATA II 8MB 9.5mm Hard Drive
My macbook specs are:
  Model Identifier:          MacBook5,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed:          2 GHz
  Number Of Processors:          1
  Total Number Of Cores:          2
  L2 Cache:          3 MB
  Memory:          2 GB
  Bus Speed:          1.07 GHz
Any help would be great, also i am looking to replace the parts myself, and i am new to macs.. is it possible? if so can an amature like me do it.
Thanks, i look forward to hearing for u guys

Hi, jtri93... did the replacement work for you? Im also planning to upgrade mine.. I have already found a replacement for my RAM but....
I have second thoughts on the hard drive because when I asked the sales rep from a certified Mac retailer shop he said the recommended hard drive for the Mac Aluminum late 2008 edition is just upto 320gb, more than that the Mac will crash... Now, I would just like to ask if the 1 TB worked perfectly fine with your Mac? I believe we have the same macbook specs, just as you stated above.
Hope you can enlighten me on this.. Thank you very very much...

  • Upgrading Macbook 2008 hard drive - ios concern

    Hi,
I currently have a macbook white intel core 2 duo 2.1 GHz macbook, bought in October 2008, running snow lepaord 10.6.8. I am going to upgrade its hard drive to a hybrid seen in the following link:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-Momentus-ST95005620AS-7200rpm-Internal/dp/B003V6 AIWU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307730125&sr=8-1
Is the the right HD for my mac, hence will it fit and work etc?
One other thing is, I have a backup of my mac on an external hard drive, via time machine which is all fine. But I am just wondering, once I take the old HD out and put the new one in, how do I get my iOS snow lepaord back onto the HD before I plug my external HD back in to get all my data across. I have lost the discs that came with my mac, but I have the snow lepaord discs that I bought a few months ago. I want to be prepared for the release of Lion.
I hope I have provided enough information, please help!!
    Thanks
    P.S APPLE ROCKS! haha

There are several programs to do this: i replaced the hard drive of a similar Macbook about a year ago and it was pretty simple.
i had some issues with the time Machine back-up restore, probably because i was using the Leapord disk that came with my computer instead of the Snow Leapord disk.
But anyway, I took out the old hard drive, but it an external HD case, and put in the new harddrive.
I booted up from the external drive and used a program called Super Duper (http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html) to make a clone of the old HD on the new HD. You then boot up from the new HD and it should be just like your old one.
(Note: the Time machine back-up feature should work, but it didn't for me . You could also try that)
    Good luck

With the updates came iTunes 11.1.1 and Quicktime 7.6.6. I am still using Garageband 2008 and iPhoto 2008. When I create music in Garageband I usually adjust the volume and save it. Even now when I share the Garageband created files with iTunes 11.1.1, the volime I previously set in Garageband is retained. However, when I use the music to create a slide show in iPhoto 2008 and export to Quicktime 7.6.6, the volume level I previously set is lost and seems to default to a low level. The problem seems to be either in the slide show export from iPhoto 2008 to Quicktime 7.6.6 or in Quicktime itself. Is there a work around, so that I can retain the volume level I had previously set in Garageband, a volume level that seems to transfer without problem to the new iTunes. But then iPhoto 2008 (slide show) possibly or Quicktime 7.6.6 do not cooperate. Before I did the upgrade to Snow Leopard, the new iTunes and Quicktime I had no problems with the set volume being retained in the old Quicktime. The reason I need control over the volume is that all these music files are uploaded to YouTube.

You would reinstall 10.6 using your installation DVD.
Out of curiosity, how much RAM do you have? Recent versions of OS X really shine with 4GB or more.

When you restore from a Time Machine back up you can pick and chose what is restored. It is not an all or nothing process. Nor do you have to do the partial restores all at the same time. If days after the first partial restore you find something else you want you can restore just that.

Hi, I have a refurbished upgraded macbook with 320 GB Disk, 4GB Memory and running Lion OS v 10.7.5.  This satisfies the second part of the requirement for installing OS X Mavericks (10.9) but happens to be an early 2008 piece.  Can I somehow install 10.9?  And why is apple not allowing people like me to try out this installation?  Any reason that are too technical that people like me cannot upgrade and handle?
This would solve many apps to run on this.

It's mainly the video card. The Models 2,1 through 4,1 have video cards with non-upgradeable 32bit drivers. The model 5,1 Late 2008 and newer have at least the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 64bit drivers. Mountain Lion and Mavericks require 64bit native drivers. Mountain Lion and Mavericks no longer support Intel's GMA 950 or GMA X3100 graphics processors.
While Lion used some 32 bit and a lot of 64 bit code, Mountain Lion and Mavericks are pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.

Using a Macbook 2008 with Lion, 10.7.5, how can I project photos/keynote presentation on my smart tv? It is connected to tv with mini-dvi/hdmi cable, but I don't know how to display the images. Thanks!

Did you switch the TV's input to the HDMI port you are using with the computer? Did you open Displays preferences to see if a second screen is displayed and then check the box to mirror to the TV screen? Did you search Google for any help links on how to do what you are trying to do?

  • Upgrading MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.8) to Yosemite

Can I upgrade my 2008 MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard 10.6.8.) with Yosemite? I was advised not to as it would substantially slow down my hard drive.

SSDs work best if speed, ruggedness, form factor, noise, or fragmentation (technically part of speed) are important factors to you. If it weren't for the price and capacity issues, SSDs would be the winner. All Mac operating systems use any free space on your hard drive as virtual memory, and this virtual memory plays a part in how well your computer performs. Because of this, the more data you have on your hard drive, the less virtual memory becomes available. Therefore, in order to help increase your Mac boot time, and keep your computer running smoothly, periodically cleaning your hard drive is necessary.

  • Just bought Snow leopard 10.6.3 and upgraded my 2008 iMAC; now want to use the free upgrade to Maverick... is that possible? I read compatibility requirement of 10.6.8 or later...

Hi! Just bought Snow leopard 10.6.3 and upgraded my 2008 iMAC; now want to use the free upgrade to Mavericks like I was advised in the Apple/Switch store... is that possible? I read compatibility requirement of 10.6.8 or later...???? Thanks for any guidance!

Before installation you should back up all your data.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes (you will need the latest version in order to synch with mobile devices).
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:

  • Macbook 2008 and connecting to Sony Bravia-help needed!

I have a macbook 2008 (early) and wanted to hook it up to watch on my sony bravia tv.  I have been told to get a mini DVI to hdmi and then an hdmi cable.  Is this correct and is there anyway to get sound other than purchasing another audio cable?

Ok, based on your photo, it's a bit blurry, it looks like your TV comes with a VGA + Audio input AND HDMI + Audio input, so you get to choose which one you want to use.
    How to connect:
    VGA + Audio (Red)
Video - A Mini-DVI - VGA adaptor, with VGA cable to TV.
Audio - Computer headphone outlet to the Audio input, using a 3.5mm male to male stereo cable. (it looks like a 3.5mm socket on the TV, confirm on site)
    HDMI + Audio (Yellow)
Video - A Mini-DVI - HDMI adaptor, with HDMI cable to TV
Audio - Computer headphone outlet to the Audio IN, using a 3.5mm male to RCA male (red/white connectors) stereo cable.
No surround sound option here, as I cannot se a TOS Link input
    Which is better?
Your computer puts out a digital signal via the DVI, so HDMI is probably the better option. you will get a higher resolution to the TV, better for movies. Some say the VGA option is better, if you are going to use it for text.
I mentioned earlier that you may get some audio sync issues using HDMI. That was probably more likely when I was thinking that you were going to need to use an adaptor to add the audio to the HDMI cable. As yours can be kept separate to the TV, it probably won't be as much of an issue.
