Upgrading Macbook 4,1 to SSD. Worth it?

Hi everyone,
I just failed at swapping out my Macbook Pro 4,1 (that is, the last 2008 Aluminim macbook pro model before unibody came out) 's Superdrive for a SSD drive. It turns out the data doubler I purchased from OWC is only for models newer than mine. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DDAMBS0GB/ . I wanted to use my original HDD for storage, and my SSD for the OS, applications, and my most used samples, but it seems the best I might be able to do is just swap out my HDD with the SSD I purchased.
Has anyone successfully swapped out their Optical drive of their Macbook Pro (pre unibody)? And if so did you see huge results seeing that the optical drives connection is not SATA III.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so this is what I need this computer for: run an intensive graphics application under Windows 7 64-bits via Paralles 6, windows installed after Paralles and not in bootcamp (I didn´t want to partition my drive).
This is exactly what I have now in my 2010 i7 Macbook pro 4Gb RAM and it´s struglling to run the program... I need to shut down any other application and still get that annoying spinning ball all the time.
*So what I want with my new mac? To run this Windows program smoothly as if it was installed directly on my macOS system! So I thought of an upgrade, either 8Gb RAM or an 128Gb SSD, as I can´t afford both at the same time.* Which upgrade would be best for my needs, any thoughts?

I'm using mac for 4 years, and my major filed is graphic rendering on 3dsmax. my suggest is run your windows via boot camp. parallel or VMware is not a good option. i got my parallel but its useless after released of bootcamp (i need 100% of RAM, Graphic and processor for graphic rendering) . bootcamp is the best way if you wanna do something "heavy" on windows. what i'm doing is after i have done my works, then i run OSX for others job, keep restarting your machine isn't that bad. Also, you dont have to worry about RAM has been shared by 2 OS.

Macbook pro 5,2 ssd compatibility

I have a MacBook Pro 5,2 Early 2009. I recently tried to upgrade with an Intel 520 SSD and my mac will not recognize the SATA 6.0 and defaults to SATA 1.5. I want to find another SSD that will run at SATA 3.0 and I was hoping someone will share their experience and recommend a compatible ssd.

I found a solution. I reset the NAVRAM. Now the Intel 520 is running beautifully at SATA 3.0 negociated link speed. I folowed the link:

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro and I want to upgrade the hardware. According to the Apple website it supports up to 8 gb of ram, but in some topics of the community there are people who say that supports 16 gb ram, wanted to know what the maximum supported and not lose anything in exchange for the memories.
Another thing I wanted to know is how to upgrade the HDD, is possible to install an SSD? It has a maximum capacity? Can be any one or should possess some specific specifications?
If I make the change I need to install OSX Leopard or Mountain Lion can be for a pendrive?
Is there any program to make a backup for EXTERNAL HD?

In fact, the 2011 MacBook Pro supports 16 GB of RAM. You can buy more memory from OWC or Crucial.
Respecting to the hard drive, you can upgrade it or install a SSD without voiding warranty. Any 2'5" SATA hard drive will work with your MacBook Pro, and you have three hard drive types: a 5400 rpm HDD, a 7200 rpm HDD and a SSD, choosing the one you most like (if you haven't got enough money for a SSD, go for the 7200 rpm HDD).
In the case of Macs, I don't recommend you to install a hard drive bigger than 2 TB in order to avoid some problems. Instead, it would be much better to get an external drive.
Your Mac comes with OS X Recovery, so you don't need OS X Mountain Lion on a USB drive. Just start your Mac holding Command, Option (Alt) and R keys, and reinstall OS X. You may need to erase the disk.
To make backups, you can use Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427 Also, you have cloning apps like Carbon Copy Cloner that will make a bootable copy of your hard disk

The main error in this position is thinking ANY sized SSD can be "storage"
Any Macbook SSD should be idealized as a working platform computer system, containing all your applications, documents, and weekly-use necessary files; and all media files such as ‘big-data’ (music/PDF collections/video/pictures), unless directly needed in the near future, should be kept off the computer and on external storage USB or likewise bare hard drives.
You cant do what you want without removing the internal SSD

Thanks a lot i followed the instructions for safe mode (i found out that i was pressing the C button after restarting) i did whats written there but the repair couldn't be performed so in addition i needed to re-formate the HD so i erased the volume and then repaired the disk--> quite disk utilities --> start the installation from the installation DVD.

Start iTunes. Make sure you really are running the version you think you are. Sometimes people end up with two copies, different versions.

You say you are running Snow Leopard 10.6.3. That version will not run the latest iTunes which requires 10.6.8 If you need iTunes 10.7 you have to be running 10.6.8

Can I use a SATA cable from a 2007 MacBook Pro for an SSD in a 2011 MacBook Pro?

Trying to replace the optical drive on my MacBook Pro with an SSD. The only SATA cable I have is from a 2007 model. Will that work? Also, I can't find a good sled for the drive... Will literally taping it in place suffice until I find such a sled?

An 85 watt charger will be fine. Generally, you can use a higher-powered charger than the one that came with your MBP - but using a lower-powered charger is not recommended.

Try these in order:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
     Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
     COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
     after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
     Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

This would solve many apps to run on this.

It's mainly the video card. The Models 2,1 through 4,1 have video cards with non-upgradeable 32bit drivers. The model 5,1 Late 2008 and newer have at least the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 64bit drivers. Mountain Lion and Mavericks require 64bit native drivers. Mountain Lion and Mavericks no longer support Intel's GMA 950 or GMA X3100 graphics processors.
While Lion used some 32 bit and a lot of 64 bit code, Mountain Lion and Mavericks are pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Hi Chris,
I am not aware of any compatibility issues between that SSD and your machine. I've purchased a couple of their SSD drives and the install was quick and easy. Although I haven't installed one of their drives into the MBP 5,1 (Late 2008), I have installed SSDs and normal SATA drives into the same body style and there's been significant reworking between the models that I've come across. Just make sure you have the appropriate tool for the drive screws and you'll be all set.
Regarding the install, the Apple Store will not install 3rd party components into your machine. Nor do they sell HDs that they will install. Apple will only install the RAM you buy there or replace parts as a result of a service.
