Upgrading MacBook Pro (15" Late 2008)
Hi everyone,
I have the following MacBook Pro:

I have 4GB of RAM installed, currently (2x2GB). I've read that the computer will (unofficially) accept 6GB of RAM (4 & 2 GB):

1) Will it indeed accept 6GB of RAM?
2) Will they 2GB of RAM cause any sigificant improvement.
Additionally, I have a 320 GB 5400 RPM HDD (which I've partitioned via Boot Camp, for Windows XP)
I'm looking at the following drive:

1) Will this drive drain my battery quickly?
2) Can I clone the drive and keep the partion?
3) Will both the RAM and the drive show significant improvement in my system?

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.
To transfer your Windows Boot Camp I use Winclone. http://download.cnet.com/Winclone/3000-2242_4-172338.html?tag=main;dropDownForm You use Winclone to create your clone image on your Mac partition before you use Carbon Copy Cloner. After you clone your Mac to the new hard drive and get it installed then you crate a new Boot Camp partition and use Winclone to reinstall your Windows XP.

Maybe it's because of the SMC reset I've done.
My computer wasn't responding to the power button when pressed and used to shut down unexpectedly so I did the SMC reset as per the procedure hereafter.

So according to you, the battery seems to work properly and doesn't need to be replaced.
Don't know if it's important but the figures I gave where the one with magsafe connected.
In fact for the time beeing I only use my computer with magsafe plugged.
I just unplugged the magpower and here are the new figures after 10 minutes.

Problem description:
(MacBook Pro 15” late 2008, OSX Yosemite 10.10.2 installed, no pending updates) computer is running very slow - takes 2-3 minutes to open apps such as Pages, even when no other apps are open. Randomly freezes and becomes unresponsive, requiring forced power down. Randomly logs off. Removed Kodak AIO software via Clean My Mac2, but BonjourAgent still there and requesting access. Cleaned weekly with Clean My Mac2 and running Sophos AntiVirus. 2GB memory installed. Currently 169.99 GB available of 249.2 GB capacity.

Macbook Pro 15" late 2008 random improper shutdowns on battery
Hi, my macbook pro 15" late 2008 model shuts down by itself when on battery. The problem started one day out of nowhere about 2 months ago. There seems to be no recurring pattern in the shutdowns as I can sometimes use the computer for one or two hours, sometimes only 5 minutes before it shuts down. The computer works perfectly when the charger is plugged in, and also when the battery is pulled out and only the charger is plugged in.
Here is what I've done so far:
Reset of the SMC
Reset of PRAM
Repair of hard disk and disk permissions with Disk Utility
Reinstallation of Snow Leopard 10.6.3 from disc and then install of all software updates
Reinstallation of all updates with the downloadable Combo Update
None of this fixed the problem.
I am a student in Glasgow, but normally live in Luxemburg. When I went back to Lux for the holidays I sent the mac for repair at Lineheart Luxemburg. The first time it was returned to me after a week. They hadn't detected the problem because they had only ran the tests with the charger pluggged in. I was quite annoyed as you might understand. All they told me was to buy an 85W charger for the mac as I only had a 60W one. This is my uncles old computer and I don't know why he had the wrong charger. I got the computer a year ago and it had worked flawlessly until now. The 85W charger didn't fix my problem.
I sent the mac back to Lineheart and they ran a second test for free. They found the problem and all they did was to repair the hard drive with Disk Utility and reinstall Snow Leopard 10.6.3. WHICH I HAD ALREADY DONE MYSELF. This time I was really annoyed. The problem basically occured again straight after I went to get the computer.
Now I am back in Glasgow and I have an appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow. I hope they can be of a bit more help although the people at Lineheart are "Apple Mac Certified Technicians" too. I've already spent 140€ for nothing.
All I really want is to test the computer with another battery since the problem seems to really come from there. However none of the technicians did this and I don't have any friends with a similar model of Macbook.
The cycle count is at 263 and the status is "normal" for the battery.
There is a weird problem though, when I plugg in the charger the icon on the top right will first say "not charging" if I unplug the cable at this moment the computer dies. If I leave it in for about a minute it will start calculating the time until full charge. This takes MUCH LONGER than it used to and when it's done I get something silly like 20 hours or 6:30 hours until full charge. After 5-10 minutes it starts calculating again. After a long time I get something more sensible like 1:30 or 2 hours until full charge. Notice that during this entire time, the percentage of the charge will not have change by a single percent. It can sometimes take up to an hour until the battery actually starts charging.
I've read on different forums that this can be related to the logic board and then my Macbook will just have to become a stationary computer since I can't pay 1200€ to get the logic board replaced. I really hope I just need battery replacement.
Also, after I turn on the mac again after an improper shutdown my antivirus (avast!) will give me a message "An internal error has occured. You can find more information in the system logs. After filtering for shutdown this is what I found. (sorry for the screenshot, I couldn't find how to copy the log)
Sorry for this very long description but I wanted you to have all the information. I'm really getting desperate so any help is appreciated even if it's only on how to locate the problem I would be so gratefull. Thank you all.

I also checked the disc and it has some problems but I can't fix them until I get my OS disc or if I ask them to do it at the Genius Bar.
Yes, I have a Time Machine backup on an external usb HDD, last time I backed up was yesterday. -

This condition just sprang up. Machine not dropped, no new parts added, OS stable, no single or significant change to anything on the box. No new external hardware.
Did a restart and the following thing happens:
When power is initially put to the box, the screen lights up, and it displays a full screen, small checkerboard pattern. You can see the Apple icon underneath the checkerboard. The boot circle spins, and then the screen displays grey, and never makes it to blue.
So I tried to boot up in safe mode. The same thing happens at the start of the boot sequence, however, after entering the safe mode, the startup proceeds normally, boots to the harddrive, and when the box changes from grey screen to blue screen, the checkerboard on the screen goes away and I have a perfectly good display, with everything working normally (but in the safe mode).
I have tried the following:
Boot from Apple CD . . . Still get the checkerboard pattern through grey screen, then as the OS loads, the pattern gets worse, (goes from a full screen pattern, to something like a "two page pattern" and it never gets to blue screen, you can never see the OS desktop.
Won't boot from USB drive.
Won't boot from external Dvd drive (Reads the disk, but won't boot, just like the internal drive).
Already changed RAM, RAM slots, etc. Nothing plugged into any port. Everything disconnected.
Changed internal harddrives, same thing happens. Zapped the PRAM, Firmware is good, etc.
Since this event happens no matter the harddrive, and the box won't startup from the Apple CD, I'm guessing it's a piece of hardware that has gone bad.
The only thing I can think to do, is to unplug all the different ancillary items, (ethernet, USB, airport, CD, etc), one at a time, off of the motherboard, and keep trying to start up normally in an effort to isolate the hardware that is bad. In other words, if I unplug the airport card from the motherboard, and the machine starts normally, then I think I would have isolated the problem. IF it does not start normally, unplug the next sub system, and try it again.
YEs, I did run Techtool Pro, and etc., and all systems passed.
Any thoughts ?

The largest 2.5" SATA HDDs of 9.5 mm thickness that I am aware of are 1 TB in capacity. There is a 12.5 mm thick HDD that will fit some MBPs. But I have not seen any of larger capacity.
Are there now 2 TB HDDs available for MBPs? If so, I am interested.

MacBook Pro Unibody (late 2008) crash when using GeForce 9600M GT
Every time I do heavy 3D rendering or play 3D games (such World of Warcraft) with the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT, after few minutes my MacBook Pro (unibody, late 2008) freezes, black screen and audio looping, no actions possibile, only hard shutdown... No problems with the 9400M.
What should I do? Get a replacement?I've had mine for a little less than two months and I noticed the overheating shortly after I got it. I think it's mostly because the fans don't spin up soon enough because the SMC controller on mine does not work properly and even if you reset it, it reverts back to only spinning the fans after a cpu/gpu temps over 90 degrees Celsius (almost boiling point!).
Mine is currently in for service but I'm being told that they haven't been able to duplicate the issue so I don't understand what method of testing they are using. I hope they don't keep my computer in repair for a long time. I know that if I fire up the Black & White 2 Demo, Call of Duty 4, or Spore and play for about 10-20 minutes the computer crashes if the fans don't spin up... Apple released a firmware update for the SMC controller but it doesn't apply to my model which is a MacBookPro 5,1 , maybe Apple doesn't realize yet how widespread the fan problem even on the late 2008 model is but it needs to be resolved and a third party utility to control the fans should not be necessary on the finest laptops available on the market. I'm confident that they will come up with something...

MacBook Pro A1286 Late 2008 WiFi Hardware Question
I'm working on a Late 2008 15" MacBook Pro model A1286. It had a plethora of issues, from broken trackpad, broken keyboard, broken display panel and a shot hard drive. It wasn't working when I got it in so I couldn't verify much. Upon fixing all of those issues and firing it up the WiFi is not working. The odd this is that the webcam uses the same cable, and that works just fine. Thinking it must be the card then, I ordered a replacement Airport card and put that in today, and the WiFi still doesn't work. What else could it be? Is it possible that only part of the cable would be bad for some reason? The owner says the wireless was working before the hard drive crash. The broken trackpad, keyboard and screen all happened prior, and they brought it in after the hard drive crashed, and had been using it like that for a while. Not sure what to do at this point... Any advice would be appreciated.

Installing an SSD is very simple - just like installing a hard drive - all you need is a Phillips #00 screwdrive and a Torx T6 screwdriver. See the video here -> http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_15_unibody_hd/.
I prefer Crucial SSDs (probably because that's what I have!) and you can go to their website and look at the available drives. You can usually get a few bucks knowcked off if you purchase from Amazon.
Before you install the SSD, download Mavericks, quit before it tries to update and you'll have a file named "Install OS Mavericks.app". Get a 8GB+ USB thumb drive and use DiskMaker X to create a bootable installation drive. Hold down the option key with the USB thumb drive in place and elect to boot from it. Then use Disk Utility to format the SSD ("Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition. Quit Disk Utility and then install Mavericks.
That'll do it!

I have aquired a MacBook pro from a friend and it does not turn on at all, I have tested the charger which works fine, changed the RAM which works fine, and even the battery says it has full charge.
I press the power buttong and there is absolutely no sign of power, neither the fans or the hard drive spin up, there is also no error beeps. The laptop is completely dead.
I have read online that it could be a possible graphics chip problem but from my experience with laptops with graphics chip problem (commonly nvidea) they turn on but there is nothing on screen or lines all across it.
I am asking whether or not to waste my time with this macbook, is it a logic board problem?If it is a LATE 2008 then the graphics chip shouldn't be the problem as that was on the Late 2007 and Early 2008 models.
That doesn't mean the graphics chip hasn't failed and taken the rest of the logic board with it. Or simply the logic board has failed which seems to be fairly common for Mac notebooks.
In other words Yes it is Dead. -
Upgrading Macbook Pro 15.4" 2008 Internal SATA HDD To SATA II?

Im considering purchasing a higher capacity internal hardrive around the 750Gb/1Tb mark. However my macbook is the early 2008 model, and it seems the majority of hardrives are SATA II, having speeds of 3Gbt, which my mother board may not be capable of (apparently only 1.5Gbt)
From researching and reading some reviews of others who have purchased internal drives on Amazon UK, some have had difficulty due to this problem, but have been able to fix the issue with a firmware update reducing SATA II drive speeds to 1.5Gbt.
Questions I have:
Do all SATA / SATA II internal hardrives need a firmware update if replacing on to a new computer?
(If so, would I need to look for a specific firmware update for the specific drive I intend on buying? And if you're in the knowledge would you mind posting links to these updates?)
What is the process of updating the firmware i.e. would I need to put firmware on external usb hardrive 1st, then upload it to macbook after installing new internal drive (if it boots up my OS that is) etc.
Would a 'hybrid' (disk+solid state) drive be compatible with a macbook as old as mine?
Do I need to update my operating system to OS X Lion first, or can it be done after installing the drive?

unfortunately for me I live in the UK, and although I think they deliver overseas, this would incur more costs.
There are UK sellers, I might consider, but although they sell drives that Apple use in their laptops, they do cost a lot more, for the Gb space provided compared to other manufacturers. But its something I'll have to consider, cheers. -
