Upgrading MBP RAM and CPU?

RAM
What speed of RAM is compatible with this model, they come as standard with 2x2GB 1086mhz cards, are there any issues fitting either 2x4GB 1600mhz or 2x4GB 1866mhz DDR3 cards?
CPU
Is it possible/economical to upgrade from 2.4GHz to the faster 2.66GHZ processor, as a standard DIY upgrade?
Thanks

I would like to use either:
Kingston HyperX Predator RAM DDR3 1866 MHz
or
Kingston HyperX Impact HX316LS9IB/4 DDR3L-1600
Thanks
You can NOT use that RAM in your model.

    Hi,
You can use Performance Monitor and add the required counters.
Check the below Technet article on Performance Monitor.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749249.aspx
Below are the steps to monitor the process in Performance Monitor.
    - Go to the Performance Monitor.
    - Right-click on the graph and select "Add Counters".
    - In the "Available counters" list, open the "Process" section by clicking on the down arrow next to it. Select "% Processor Time" (and any other counter you want).
    - In the "Instances of selected object" list, select the process you want to track. Then click on "Add >>" button. Click on OK.

the most improving effect on 'speed' is distributed media:
System/App, Projects, Events, Cache, backups on diff. platters. Esp. when using compounds/multicams, each 'angle' on its own drive...
To improve 'rendering' = export speed, the graphic card is the limiting factor.
On my slow system, 8GB was nice, 16GBs made it more 'snappier' ...

  • Safari keeps going through my RAM and CPU

Hello, I have the up-to-date (5.1) version of Safari running on my OS X Lion. Despite the update, I'm still experiencing RAM and CPU downfalls because of the process "Safari Web Content", most of all when I surf the Facebook website (sometimes it reaches 75% CPU and 1.7GB RAM levels).
Do I simply have to wait another Safari update to fix this or is this completely normal? Before the Lion update I did not experience this bug, as I remember.
    Thanks in advance.
    Giovanni

The problem evolved. Thanks to another question, I realized some Safari extension could make the RAM collapse, like 1Password extension. But now if I want to disable them, the Extension tab in preferences just remains blank!

  • Need expert advice on Ram and CPU Speed

I have read places that your Ram and CPU FSB speed should be the same to increase performance. However, I can no longer find them anymore.  Now, I just want to make sure.
I currently have PC2700 (333Mhz) ram, but my processor is a AMD 2000+XP at 266 FSB.  Should I run my ram at 266 Mhz instead of 333 for a 1:1 ratio?
    What do the experts think?
    Thanks everyone!

  • Upgrading the ram and hdd myself

Well i have read the following page on the apple site
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1270
And i have a fair idea on how to upgrade the ram and the harddrive.
My question is will doing so void my warranty? and applecare?

Doing the replacements yourself will not void the warranty provided you don't damage anything in the process - just make sure you have the right tools and follow the instructions (in the little handbook that came with your Mac) carefully.

  • MBP Ram and Processor

I am about to buy a MBP and i was wondering on some feedback on if its worth paying the extra for the 2.53 GHz MBP. Is there a noticable difference between the 2gb of ram and the 4 gb of ram. And the difference between the 2.4ghz processor and the 2.53 ghz.
I am not a big gamer but i am just curious how much of a difference all the features have in speed

Interesting. Apple isn't totally overcharging for the RAM this time. It's only $150 to max out the base model.
The hard drive is easy to replace, so if you want to go with the stock drive now and upgrade it later when larger drives are cheaper, you could choose to do that. You can get to 320GB 7200 RPM for $110 after rebate at macsales.com; Apple wants $150 to upgrade the base model to that.
If you will be using Photoshop CS4 it uses the GPU and video RAM now so the 512MB would be good in that case.
All in all I think you will notice more of a speed boost from more RAM, more disk space, and more VRAM (if applicable) than you would from the CPU upgrade.
I still have no regrets about buying the base model Penryn Aluminum MBP with just 256MB VRAM, with main RAM I upgraded myself. But if I was shopping today, with Apple's more reasonable RAM prices and the growing importance of VRAM, I might go for the top end 15", for the RAM, VRAM, HD, and cache upgrade combo, and would consider the CPU boost to be simply a bonus thrown in. I would not spend the extra $300 on the 2.8GHz CPU.

  • What is kernel_task, and why is it taking up so much RAM and CPU?

I have recently upgraded to OS X Mavericks, and despite promises of extreme performance, my MPB has been running slower than ever before. According to Activity Monitor, "kernal_task" is taking up 600+ MB of RAM and hasn't dropped since I upgraded. It's also been taking between 4% and 8% of my CPU. When I first upgraded, there was a little alert message that said it was optomizing my system, and it may slow down the computer and decrease battery life. The message lasted for two days, then finally went away. (I didn't close it, so I assumed it had finished.) However, kernal_task, which I thought was the optomization, has been on the top of the list of RAM usage and top 3 on the list of % CPU since I upgraded. PLEASE tell me what it is, and how I can decrease it's toll on my performance! It won't let me stop the task or even get more information on it when I select it on the list of processes. Also, on a side note, Activity Monitor used to let you change its dock icon to a pie chart showing memory usage. Unfortunately, this feature seems to be gone. Is there any way I can get it back or use a different app? I don't want to have it open on top of my stuff or as a window, I would like to see it in the dock. In fact, the chart isn't even in the memory tab of the Activity Monitor application anymore!
Thank you so much to whoever can help me out in my panic and frustration. For the record, I am actually really great at computers, but I turned to the support community because I'm sure there's someone out there with more knowledge than me, even though I'm not a tech-illiterate person...

Also, I'm on a MacBook Pro 17" with a 500GB hard drive (and only 70GB free, but I use an external 2TB as my main drive). It is a mid-2010 build, and I bought it certified refurbished.

That's not very high. Mine is over 1 GB. Typical is around 5-800 GBs depending upon what tasks are running.
You don't need to add more RAM, just be careful not to run more concurrent tasks than are appropriate for your memory usage profile. It's really not a big deal unless it gets to 600 GBs. Then you have a problem.
I disagree with McBlob about free disk space. Keep at least 10% of the drive's capacity as free space. For you that's 50 GBs, and that's adequate.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the ram and hard drive on the new retina after purchase ?

hi i was wondering if it was possible to upgrade my macbook pro retina display to a bigger ram and hard drive or will i be stuck with 8 gb of ram and 256 gb hard drive?

Sorry to say, you're stuck with it.
If however, you just got your Retina, you have a 14 Day return/exchange in case you want something with more memory and a larger flash drive.
Here's a suggestion - you'll be fine with 8GB since most people are still running on 4GB of RAM.  Why not just buy an external drive and save your files there so you don't fill up your flash drive in your Retina.
    Again, just a suggestion.

  • Slow so i upgraded mem ram and still no faster

my new 2000 hp notebook came with 4gb ram and is really slow so i was told to upgrade it to 8gb and it would speed up my notebook alot. i bought the 8gb ram ($85) and installed it only to find out my notebook is no faster at all. why is that?? how do i make my notebook faster?? its brand new and this is aggrivating

    Hi,
Normally from 1Gb to 2Gb you can see a lot faster; from 2Gb to 4Gb a little bit faster but from 4Gb to 8Gb you can't see this unless you open many applications at the same time and switching around specially if your applications support DIM (not frequently loading data from disk, keep data in memory). HP 2000 is a series of many models, what is yours ? What is it OS, 32bit or 64bit. From my testing, using SSD will gain much more benefit interms of price/performance.

  • Access Connections egregeious RAM and CPU usage

Running Access Connections 5.2 (build 7xcx13ww) on WinXP SP3 on a Thinkpad X31 with built-in 802.11 adaptor.  No ethernet or other networking ports connected.  As long as the GUI isn't up, no problem.
But if I open the GUI and hit the Find button, about 50% of the time the tool goes into some sort of verrrrry long loop, burning as much as 30 minutes of CPU time and expanding the memory footprint to ~500 MB of "Mem Usage" and 1500 MB of "VM Size" (per Windows Task Manager).
The "solution" is to kill the GUI and restart it, but something is vewy scwewy awound hewe.

Installed all the packages you indicated, except for the Intel WiFi driver set (because I'm running on the IBM b/g card).  Everything works pretty much as it did before, a little better.
But things are still messy in the CPU utilization and memory consumption of AccessConnections.exe:
      - when you push the "find" button for WiFi networks, the CPU utilization goes to 100% and memory footprint jumps by 20 MB or so...it jumps up every time you push the find button and it doesn't decline again even though the base-station iconography disappears
      - just leaving the AC GUI open while there's a normal WiFi connection in place, the GUI uses about 25% of CPU indefinitely
      - the AC GUI also grows its memory footprint by about 250 kB/s indefinitely
      - after 3 CPU minutes of normal operation (around 10 minutes), the AC GUI is using 275 MB of memory and 250 MB of VM space
      - after  10 CPU minutes of heavy use (switching networks several times), over 1 GB each for RAM and VM
Looks like a memory leak to me...
    Problem occurs when:
      - GUI is up on screen showing the map
      - there's a connection and the green-expanding-circles animation is running around the base station you're connected to
      - the Find button is pushed and several available networks are displayed
    Problem stops when:
      - GUI is minimized or is showing the "Location Profile" or "Options" tab
      - there's no active WiFi connection
      - after 10 CPU minutes, you disconnect and re-connect to the same network.  This is a memory footprint of over 250MB, but at least it stops expanding
      - GUI is terminated

  • Upgrade questions - Ram and HD

Considering adding some ram and a new HD to my MacBook.
    It's a late 2008 Unibody, 2.4 GHz.
I currently have 4GB of Ram and a 250GB HD, which I believe spins at 5400 rpm (how do I check that?).
My understanding is that this machine can take 6GB of ram. I'm assuming I can just buy one 4GB stick and replace the 2GB stick with it, correct? If so, where should I buy it from and what should I be looking for? Also, what performance increase can I expect - specifically in Photoshop CS5 and LR3?
Will getting a faster spinning drive increase performance as well (for PS and LR)? If so, what should I be looking for there?
    Thanks for any/all help.

To find out about your hard drive open System Profiler to find the make and model of the drive then go to the manufacturer's site to find specifications for the particular model.
Adding more RAM will not make the computer perform faster. It simply allows you to run more applications concurrently or provides more RAM to running applications. If you are now running out of RAM then adding more will help. If you aren't running out of RAM, then adding more simply lets you run more applications concurrently. To add more RAM to reach the 6 GB limit you will need one 4 GB module and one 2 GB module. Look in the user manual for information on the specific type of RAM you need. Most likely PC-5300 667 MHz SDRAM 200-pin, but check your manual. Sources of RAM I recommend are Data Mem and OWC.
Getting a faster and/or larger hard drive will improve the performance of data access and may improve boot time. An excellent replacement would be a Seagate X500 which is a 7200 RPM Hybrid drive having 500 GBs of storage plus 4 GBs of SSD memory to improve the drive's performance. It's not as fast as a normal SSD, but it's faster than a standard drive. Cost is around $160.00 on the street. OWC sells a nice bundle of drive, enclosure, tools, and software. You can replace the existing drive then put the old drive in the enclosure so you can boot the computer then partition and format the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one.
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive.
Source means the external startup drive.

  • Why can't I install MacOSX Lion on a Mac Mini with 10.6.8, 2GB RAM, and CPU upgraded to Core2 Duo?

I have an older Intel Mac Mini running fully updated Snow Leopard with an upgraded CPU (Core2 Duo), RAM (2GB), and hard drive.
Supposedly, this should be compatible with Lion, but the App Store refuses to download it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

It's not the graphics card it is the fact that it is an "upgraded"
system.  Lion, as with any OSX install, is based on the
original computer ID.  If the ID indicated that it was not
a model that was shipped with a CPU that meets the minimum
    requirements it will not install.
The reason I say it is not the graphics card, is that my
Macbook has that card and Lion installed without issue.  It
was, however, equipped with a Core2Duo processor.

Hello, i have a HP probook 4710s, and I also make motorbike videos and general videos with a GoPro Hero 3+, and its full HD at 1080p and 60fps. My laptop can't play this. I can watch full HD videos on youtube for example, but when i try to play it on windows media player the video shatters and lags and I simply can't watch it. I found what seems to be a solution, Some people said i have to upgrade the CPU to a dual core 2.0ghz.. The problem is I don't know much about computers, so can you talk with me like a total noob, please? ANd i also need to know where I can buy the CPU and the RAM online!!!

    Hello Blackdavid.
I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure, I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums, since this is a commercial product. You can click here for the link.
