Upgrading Memory/HD/Software - Advice Please

Hello.
I have an original MacBook Pro 15" 1.83GHz, 80GB Hard Drive, Mac OS X 10.4.11 and two 512MB RAM
My Hard Drive is virtually full and I already use external storage for backup and large video and media content. I want to expand my internal Hard drive and whilst I'm at it, it seems wise to increase the memory and then upgrade my operating system.
Can someone please offer any advice as to
a) what i might be able to buy myself in terms of hardware
b) how then I get it fitted/who could do it for me in London and
c) How i then transfer content, software onto new drive, many thanks
Look for to any help, in layman's terms. Thanks

You can get up to a 500 GB drive, and your maximum RAM is 2 GB (you'd replace the 2 x 512 MB sticks with 2 x 1 GB sticks). An AASP can swap the HDD (and the RAM, too). Here's how to find one:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434
Most will perform the data transfer for you - they'll clone your current internal drive onto the new drive in an external enclosure, boot from the new drive to make sure it works, then physically swap the drives.
If they don't do the transfer, clone your current drive onto an external drive (using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner), test the clone by booting from the external (connect it, boot with the option key held, select the external drive), then when you get your computer back, boot it from the external clone and use the same software to clone the system back to the new internal drive.

  • I can't turn on my Mac Book Air after upgrade the Lion software. Please, can you help me?

I bought a Mac Book Air 3 month ago. I upgrade Lion software several hours ago. Later I reboot and I left to work. When I arrive, I can't turn on my MAC. Only light up the capital letter light, all the other parts are
dead o seem to be. Can you tell me what I have to do to solve the problem, please?

We can't, but Apple can, contact customer service, have your serial number ready and for a small fee Apple will send you a replacement.
If you're in a hurry, go to the Apple Store and purchase a copy of OSX ($29 in the US)

This has happened to me with a few downloads without any upsets.
    You should be OK.
As I recall the download is around 1.2 gig so it takes a bit of time and effort to get it to your system.

    Vinayaka-
After all you've tried, Dah*veed is probably right about needing warranty assistance.
But first check to be sure Settings-Airplane Mode is set to OFF, and Settings-WiFi-WiFi is set to ON.
Try unplugging your WiFi router for a few seconds.  Then reset the iPad's network.  Go to Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings.  You will need to reconnect to your WiFi.

  • Updating N70 - first-timer advice please

First off, I'd better say I've never attempted to update the firmware on any phone before. My T-Mobile Nokia N70's current firmware is – and I hope you're sitting down – v2.0537.1.7, which was out of date when I got the phone around a year ago.
I've downloaded the Nokia software updater and sorted out my phone's connection to the PC, so I'm pretty much ready to go, but just have a few questions - well, concerns really.
I know I need to back up my contacts to the PC and also save any pictures/files in the gallery, but I was wondering what else will be lost when I do it?
I don't mind losing any of the games that came pre-installed (don't know whether by Nokia or T-Mobile), but Adobe reader is useful to me. What programs etc will I lose, and what will stay after I upgrade?
What I'm probably most concerned about, however, is the connection settings. Once I have updated the firmware, will the phone retain the call and SMS/MMS connection settings, which I presume were set by T-Mobile, meaning I will be able to carry on without having to change anything, or will I have to sort them all out?
I guess it's just a case of first-time nerves, but any help or advice anyone can give me would be hugely appreciated.

Basically once you run the Software Updater tool and it upgrades your phone, it will revert to the condition that you got it when you first took it out of its box. So there will be no settings on the phone whatsoever, and any applications that you installed after you bought the phone will not be there anymore - applications that were on there when you bought it (e.g. calculator etc.) will be there.
If you have a memory card, I would recommend that you backup your phone contents to your memory card, and then restore them once the upgrade has been completed. From memory (no pun intended) I think on the N70 you can access the memory card by going to Tools->Memory card - then goto the Options menu and "Backup phone contents to memory card" or something similar. When I did this on my N70 and more recently on my N95 it also restored not only the SMS, MMS settings, but also the applications I had installed too. Once the upgrade process has been completed, you can then go back to the memory card and restore the backup to your phone.
I'm not trying to put the frighteners on you, but be aware that as with any firmware update for any device, there is always the possibility of "bricking" the device - i.e. the firmware upgrade process may go awry and you may be left with a non functioning phone.
Having said that, before Nokia disabled the ability to upgrade the firmware on a phone more than once, I ran the NSU on my N70 about 3 or 4 times and only had one problem - I've also recently upgraded my N95 and the process went flawlessly, however if you rely on your phone for business or emergency use then I would recommend that you make provisions to have another phone available in case it does go wrong.
Please ensure you are running the most recent copy of PC Suite and the NSU before going ahead with the upgrade.
The software updater can be found here : http://www.nokia.co.uk/softwareupdater
The PC Suite program (to create and restore backups) can be found here : http://www.nokia.com/pcsuite
One final word of advice - don't be in a rush when you do the process - it doesn't take a long time (at the most 10 minutes), but if you are in a rush to do this then you may be tempted to disconnect the device before the upgrade has been done - this is a VERY VERY VERY bad thing to do and will definitely turn your phone into a brick - so don't !
During the process itself you may see the screen power up and say "Test mode" - this is fine - just let it carry through and the phone will eventually come back up. If there is a scenario where you've given it half an hour and there's been no joy (e.g. the screen is blank), then take the battery physically out of the phone for 5 minutes then put it back and power the phone back on. If it doesn't come back up then you will have to visit your nearest Nokia Service Centre.
I know I've probably painted quite a negative picture, but as I've said I've upgraded the firmware about 4/5 times successfully and had no problems whatsoever, but it's only fair I paint a balanced picture so you are aware of all the pros and cons of doing this.
Good luck and please let me know how you get on.
    Regards,
    Edward

  • New System Build feedback/advice, please...

Time to build a new WorkStation. My motivation for upgrading is that I have been using a mediocore laptop (i7m, 8gb, 250gb ) from my work as my home system for the last 2 years, I am starting to get more freelance coming in and need a good desktop.
I am not so sure about my processor, mother board and video card choice. I am more interested in app usability than absolute throughput and want to maximise my dollar investment.
    Purchase date: this week
Budget:  I'd like to stay close to $1000-1300, but can spend more for significant performance gains. As I do more  research, my inclinations are trending higher.
System Usage: My primary uses will include photo editing with Lightroom and Photoshop, 3D graphics using 3D studio Max, Maya and Mud Box, HD video editing using Premiere and After Affects and  Web Design. I will also use it as an HD media player and hifi audio is important. Maximizing cs6 performance in premiere & pShop is my main target. I am focused mainly on user experience while running these apps. If I need to encode hrs of video or crank out frames in max/maya, I can do it at work. I seldom run games.
Monitors: I'm running two Dell U2410's IPS, calibrated w\Color Munki, one portrait one lanscape.
Parts to Upgrade: Full system build
    O/S : Win7 Ultimate, I might play with Ubuntu/Virtualization
Vendor: Newegg unless I can save big $$ else where. I like B&H.
It needs to be an Intel machine & I have chosen lga 2011 becuase I'll eventually go to 64gb. I'll do some modest overclocking.
Any advice is appreciated. Thank you for your expertise.

I have picked the MSI motherboard due to its support for 128gb ram, superior audio and other high end features. The AS Rock for its rep for solid value/performance. Opinions?
Finally, I would like some advice on video cards. I prefer nVidia to ATI, but I'm not sure which chip to go for. The six fifties are cheaper, but the 660 ti provides more CUDA cores.

    Alex,
I sure wish you would quick picking fights with lots of knowledgeable people just trying to help people build good PCs for running Adobe Premiere. (I am stating that based on not just this thread, but rather the strong challenges you seem to bring to about half of the threads that you've chosen to participate in).
I was the original poster to suggest that Neal select a larger case. Next Harm agreed and cited 6 points which I would agree with regarding why a larger box is better for a video editing rig.
What are the typical goals for someone wanting a video editing PC? I would expect that most users want:
    - robust, runs and never fails
    - has incredible power; face it, video editing with AVCHD is one of the most taxing applications a PC can face today
    - quiet; who wants to be doing creative work with any server room like wind noise
Now let me be specific where you are simply WRONG WRONG WRONG:
You stated: "Back pressure increases in larger spaces due to natural impedance of airflow (much like with electricity traveling over distance)"
Fact: Exactly the opposite; Back pressure decreases in larger spaces due to more room for the air to flow (much like thicker copper passes electricity with less resistance than a thin wire)
Your stated: "Open non-compartmentalized spaces are a recipe for hot spots - areas of turbulence with higher temperatures." and then cited a server room article talking about cooling air taking the path of least resistance -- going under the floor in a server room, instead of through rack mounted servers.
Fact: Lots of open space for large, slow moving fans to keep a video editing box cool is a great way to go
You stated: "Full towers - in themselves - are worse for cooling"
Fact: That is one crazy indefensible statement!
I seriously doubt that you fully comprehend the differences and importance of thermal conductivity, heat capacity, conduction, convection, and radiation for you to make the statements that you have so far and these are the staples for discussing how heat transfer takes place.
Note to other readers... There are lots of ways to cool components including cpus, hard drives, gpus and memory. I suspect that the noise levels brought by servers and some gamers would be totally offensive to the ambient noise level that you want in the room with you for video editing. Therefore we are left with just a few quiet alternatives: 1) lots of volume at low velocity (large cases, large fans, slow rpm), 2) liquid cooling, and 3) Cases with doors or baffles to keep the sound from a noisier solution from getting back to your ears.
    Regards,
    Jim

my cd/dvd drive isn't working and i want to upgrade my mac os x10.5.8, how can i upgrade without the software CD

I think not.   You will need to order a disc from Apple quoting your serial number, as many of these discs are machine specific.   So unless you can get your drive working I think you will have to take a trip to an Apple store.
Indeed, you have an old computer that may not be worth the cost of repair ... but it is still worth seeking Apple advice and a visual inspection.   It just might be something not too drastic.

    Upgrade your OS:
Upgrading to Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

    I have a MacBook Pro 15 inch early 2011.
The new features available in OS X Yosemite like Continuity, Handoff, etc are not supported in this model.
I did upgrade RAM to avoid any possible slowdown.
I found replacing the HD with SSD is  too expensive for  a 4 years old model.
Replacing the CPU/GPU is not for amateurs.
If you think that rebuilding a Mac part by part is a viable option, please go ahead and rebuild it.
    Best.

    Try
    Merlin
    <http://projectwizards.net/en/merlin/>
    You can also try
    Open Project
    <http://sourceforge.net/projects/openproj/>
but I don't know if it's still in active development. OmniPlan can import MS Project files, but I don't know if that's practical for your needs.
In a Mac/Win environment, the only practical solution may be to run MS Project in a virtual machine like Parallels or Fusion, or perhaps virtualised with CrossOver.
