Upgrading Multiple Systems to Snow Leopard Question, HELP PLEASE

Hey guys,
I have 2 macs in my house, 1 that is running leopard, and 1 that is running tiger. I want to upgrade both of them to snow leopard, and I saw that in order for me to upgrade the one on tiger to snow leopard I must buy the box set. If I were to buy the Mac Box Set Family Edition for $229, would I be able to put the iwork and snowleopard on both my computers, the tiger one as well as the one on leopard? Or should I buy one box set for the tiger one, and the 29 dollar upgrade for the leopard one I got, is Iwork worth buying the family set for?
-Adam

If you get the box set family pack, you can upgrade both machines to Snow Leopard with iLife '09 and iWork '09. If you instead get the Snow Leopard Box Set and the Upgrade, you cannot, per the license, upgrade iLife and iWork to the '09 machines on the system that is currently running Leopard.
Hence, the former solution is probably recommended.

  • Before upgrading my system from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion I had taken a backup of iPhoto in my external drive. But now when I try to open that package, I'm directed to app store to buy new iPhoto. How can I retrieve my photos without buying iPhoto?

Before upgrading my system from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion I had taken a backup of iPhoto library in my external drive. But now when I try to open that package, I'm directed to app store to buy new iPhoto. Why would apple install iPhoto by default with Snow Leapord and make us import all our photos in it at the first place, and now ask for money if we want to retrieve our photos back on mountain lion? What if they make contacts a paid app with the next OS upgrade, and then bully us to pay money if we want our contacts? This is something very dissappointing on Apple's part. I need answers here.

I fail to remember if the installer gave me an option to keep my applications.
The Mountain Lion installer will not delete applications. It will only mark applications, that are not compatible with your current system with a "forbidden" sign in the icon. And you cannot launch them.
Does your iPhoto icon in the Applications folder look like this?
Then your iPhoto version is incompatible and cannot run with Mt. Lion. If it is iPhoto '11, with a versionnumber starting with 9.x.x., you can upgrade it by downloading a newer version from the Apple downloads site  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1650.
But if you have 8.x.x, you need to buy an upgrade.

Did you click on the little triangle? Did you select one of the document files before pressing COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window? If the panel is closed it looks like this:
If you then click on that little triangle gadget you get this:
A temporary solution is to CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the document file, navigate to the Open With item, and select from the sub-menu.
The first method makes the association permanent. This method only applies to the currently selected document.

  • Upgrading From Tiger to Snow Leopard Questions

I might upgrade my Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 on my iMac to Snow soon and was wondering if there was a way I could have Snow be on an external drive. I was at my local Apple Specialist store and one of the employees hooked up an external HDD to my computer with I think either Snow or Lion on it. Don't know which. My question is, would it be possible to run Snow on an External HDD while also still having Tiger on my iMac? I like Tiger, and would like to continue using it, but the person told me it would be good to upgrade since my OS is older. I would like to continue using Tiger but at the same time want to use Snow too. So would it be possible to run Snow Leopard on an external HDD while keeping all my files/etc on my Tiger?

If we keep this strictly as a theoretical discussion, the answer is "yes" or "maybe". But I need to explain some context or qualification on that answer in the way I have my system set up.
I set up my system so my home dir is always on its own volume.  The boot volume is always separate.  That way I can switch to any boot volume and continue to use my same home dir.   So if I upgrade my system I can always fall back on the older system or use a backup of the current system if it fails in some way.
Now here's where I qualify that answer.  I always recommend never upgrading a system without having backups to fall back on.  So, say for example, I go from 10.6.5 to 10.6.6 I always can just boot from my 10.6.5 boot drive for comparison purposes and to revert to it if the update is total disaster.  In all cases I am still using my same home dir because it is on a different drive (and of course it has backups too).  But these kind of updates are all within the same version of "cat", 10.6.x in this case (all Snow Leopard updates).  So that is why I answer "yes".
Going from one "cat" to another is why I say "maybe".  So if I update 10.5 to 10.6, or 10.6 to 10.7 IMO, all bets are off.  There's no way to know for sure except by trying (which is no big deal since I always have backups). This is due to possible file system changes, finder changes, and who knows what else changes.  Hence, "maybe".
If you want to keep two systems with your home dir on those respective systems, of course you can always do that.  It's your choice.  But then keeping them in sync is a pain.  So for this kind of setup it's probably simpler to just bite the bullet and upgrade and use only a single OS.

  • I am trying to upgrade a Macbook Pro that I was given to Snow Leopard. Help please?!

I am trying to upgrade a Macbook Pro that I was given to Snow Leopard.  While doing so, it froze up at 29 minutes left.  I am now getting the white screen with the flashing folder.  I don't need to save anything that is/was on it, I just need it running again.

  • 32bit Synth Not Recognized On 64bit Snow Leopard! Help Please!

    Hey guys.
Thanks In advance. I've read through a lot of other peoples problems and learnt a lot through the forum.
My problem is I have a Korg M3 that only has 32bit drivers available for it. Snow Leopard is not recognizing the synth any more and its killing me a little on the inside trying to find a work around. I was just wondering if there are any solutions people have come up with or if there are any programs that will mask or bridge the bit rate.
The Korg web site has a 64bit update for the drivers for windows but not yet for mac, but I kinda need it because I'm meant to be playing a show in a bit over a week and I'm hoping I don't have to revert back an OS.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Hey. I know the response is a bit late but my net died.
When I send the panic command there is no response from the synth. It actually sends note value data to the synth right?
I tested this by telling the synth to start a drum pattern as soon as it received note data, obviously with no luck.

Do a backup,  preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

Use the manual methods.. but it is possible for TM to wipe the old files in trying to fit into the space.
Try Q16.. but read all the section 14-17

My operating system is Snow Leopard 10.6.8. How do I upgrade to Maverick?

Back up your data, open the Mac App Store, and try downloading it; this won't be allowed on an incompatible machine. It doesn't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004.

Restart with the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD in the drive or with the Lion USB drive connected, hold down the Option key just after the restart, tab to the installation disk, and press Enter. If the computer has a firmware password set, it needs to be provided for this to work.

  • Hi i want to upgrade my iMac from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to OS X Mavericks or OS X Yosemite. My software update menu dosnn´t find any updates available. Help please, what can i do to upgrade to OS X Mavericks or newer version?

Hi i want to upgrade my iMac from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to OS X Mavericks or OS X Yosemite. My software update menu dosnn´t find any updates available. Help please, what can i do to upgrade to OS X Mavericks or newer version?

Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, the computer's also incompatible with Mountain Lion and Mavericks; if desired, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.
