Upgrading my 12" Powerbook G4 1.33MHz

Hi there
I add a 512RAM (Kingston KVR333X64SC25) to my Powerbook a few years back. Just recently I decided to upgrade to replace it with a 1GB RAM. However I was informed by my local Mac Reseller that it is 'recommended' to use a "KTA" instead of a "KVR" type RAM for a Powerbook/Apple. Will there be a difference if I used either one?
Riz

"KVR" is Kingston's "Value RAM" series and is designed for el cheapo PCs and sometimes has issues with Apple products.
Kingston has specialized RAM designed for Apple machines, which is the "KTA" series.
Those denote the model numbers of their RAM modules.
Though some swear (not me!) that they've used the "KVR" series and have had no problems at all. I, like others, recommend using Samsung, Micron (Crucial), or Hynix RAM as those are the OEM brands that Apple uses in its machines.
You can try PNY memory as well, which I did on my 15-inch PowerBook and mentioned it in that forum. It works great and can be had for cheap when it is on sale. (Though I think the reason I had success with it is because, oddly enough, I found the PNY memory modules to have been made by Hynix!).
For my 12-inch PowerBook, I bought a Samsung module from Other World Computing (www.macsales.com).

Please don't answer that i need to upgrade the computer os because that has been a past nightmare i have been through too many times.
Is there any way i can upgrade the phone w/o going to an apple store so hereafter w/ the upgrade to the new os (whenever that gets squared away), i will not need a computer to do it?

Solved my issue by setting up a new account on my daughter's computer. Not 100% solved, but i was able to get the update on my 3GS.

  • I recently upgraded my old powerbook to an iMac.  I've dumped the files of my backup drive into the new iMac. Is there a way to have access to all the files (new and old computers) when logged on as the same user vs. logging in and out to access each?

I am new to posting to this support community but have often referred to it for answers.  So thank you all who've contributed; you've been a great help!

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.

  • Can 10.5 Upgrade Kill a Powerbook G4?

    Hello,
Powerbook G4 1Ghz, 1GB memory - was running 10.4.10 with no problems. Tried to upgrade to 10.5. I could never get the upgrade to finish (kernel panics, core dumps, etc.). Tried every option, including a complete erase of the hard drive and fresh install. The upgrade would always crash mid-way through. Finally gave up and decided to go back to 10.4.
Now I can't even get the 10.4 install to work. It crashes too (kernel panic). I've erased the disk several times including a complete wipe using disk utility.
I've done the alt-option-P-R reset several times and have also reset the PMU. Nothing works.
Is it possible that the 10.5 upgrade killed my machine or is it just a coincidence? The machine is pretty old.
    Any suggestions welcomed.
btw, is this something that the Genius Bar at an Apple Store could fix for a fee?
    Thanks,
    Mark

Yes. Leopard can damage hardware. See my long-winded post here.
It ***. Out of Applecare, and new logic boards cost as much as your lappy goes for on Craigslist. I hardly think Apple will pony up to fix our hardware - or admit to it.
Before giving up, I'd try an open firmware reset.
    option-apple-O-F
    reset-nvram
    reset-all
That took care of mine. Of course, it didn't live much longer after that. You may have better luck.
I'd run the Apple Hardware Test (hold down option while booting from your original install disks that came with it) a bunch of times, and see what you come up with.

  • RAM Upgrade for G$ Powerbook 1.67GHz

I have a 1.67 GHz Powerbook G4 with 512 Mb RAM I want to replace the two 256MB boards with two 1Gb boards. I think the specs for the or=iginal boasrds are PC2700 DDR SDRAM - can I safely replace these with faster boards - i.e. PC 3200 DDR SDRAM ? Any help greatly appreciated

I hate to pose a second question within a topic but it is related to the g4 1.67 powerbook. Mine is a double layer drive version (best way to differentiate, I suppose), using the pc-4200 sticks. I just upgraded and was curious about a notation within System Profiler. It had 512 to start with, in the lower slot (20, I think it's called). I bought a 1 gig stick, which was quite reasonably priced at put it in. I doubted that buying two gig would give appreciably more performance than 1.5. I installed the 1 gig in the top (meaning closest to the hatch) and ran up the machine. Recognized everything fine, says 1.5 gig in the "about...". When I looked at system profiler, it also showed 1.5; clicking on the memory detail showed 20 and 23 filled with 512 in 20 (original) and 1gig in 23. But, it shows "reversed" in the comment field. I wondered if there was any effect for installing them this way or if I should take both out and put the 1 gig in the bottom slot.
Re: the original question. I'm no powerbook expert but any computer design I know of is limited to the clock speed used on the memory board. The board clock usually is just a derivative (divided) from the main system clock and moves memory one word at a time (to a particular chip set) regardless of chip speed as long as it is the equivalent of the clock or higher. Slower chips will be erratic and cause errors as they slip words by not keeping up with the clock but that's not what was asked. Visualize memory as a bunch of firm spaghetti on a board 64 or 128 strands wide; you take a knife and cut across the ends and slide them to the edge of the board (falling is irrelevant). Then get another cut. That's how input to the memory is moved. More sophisticated designs can use more complex schemes but this is the basic.

  • Upgrade Options for PowerBook G4 Titanium

I have a PowerBook G4 Titanium with Mac OS 10.1 installed.
I would like to install the most recent OS possible on it.
What are the options I have? Is it Tiger or Leopard? Do I have to buy a retail DVD or does Apple sell upgrade DVDs? How is it all done?
Any help will do. Thanks in advance.

You can install the latest version of Leopard provided your PB has an 867 MHz or faster processor and at least 512 MBs of installed RAM (more would be better.) You will have to purchase the retail package. There are no upgrade DVDs available.
If your machine does not meet the requirements for Leopard then you can install Tiger. However, Apple no longer sells Tiger so you will need to find the retail package elsewhere such as eBay. Be sure you only purchase the retail version (black labels.)

  • Upgrading OS on Powerbook 190 Series

I downloaded the network install files for 7.53, 7.55 and 7.55rev2 using my MAC. I burned them to a CD using my MAC then went on my PC CD drive and transferred the install files to a PC card with CF memory. I took that PC card in the Powerbook 190 and it mounted fine. Now all my icons are "PC" labeled. I remember this but I do not remember the fix for it and how I get the install file to run on my 190 so I can use the installers. Was there not a program that fixed this issue called Maclink or something? I just need the install files to execute on the System 7.51 Powerbook 190 so I can upgrade it to System 7.77 rev2. Thanks.
    -=SunnaH=-

    SunnaH,
Normally, keep any downloaded Mac program files in the original encoded format, be it MacBinary (.bin) or BinHex (.hqx), until they arrive on the PB 190. Then, but first then, decode (and decompress) them using StuffIt Expander for Macintosh. This is especially important if the chain involves a PC. The file names on the PC may become truncated, but this should not affect anything (provided that you are not trying to decode or decompress on the PC).
A CompactFlash memory card (and a PC Card adapter for CF in the PB 190) is a good way of transferring files. The CF card is usually PC formatted from the beginning; this is (of course) the correct format if you want to download on (or transfer via) a PC.
For the future, it would also be a good idea to have another CF card, reformatted for Mac (do this in the PB 190). You could even install an operating system on that Mac-formatted CF card. This would allow you to start the PB 190 from the CF card (and run the computer quietly; the hard drive can be switched off by dragging it to the Trash).

  • G4 problems and as solution can i upgrade wifi on powerbook

Basically can i upgrade the wifi speed of my powerbook.
I have a G4 with an airport extreme attached, and my wii connects to the network too.
My G4 is on its last legs i think, the power supply is dodgy and this has already fried the usb ports of my apple lcd monitor, and for about a year the usb ports on the G4 only work with mouse, keyboard, bluetooth, card reader, and not with a usb 2.0 drive. My usb scanner blew up, guess that wasnt a coincidence.
I even added a usb 2.0 pcmcia card which operates exactly the same.
I have an ijoy media player (usb 2.0) so what ive had to do to get tv programs onto it is download on the G4, copy onto a firewire lacie pocketdrive and then attach the ijoy to the powerbook which has a usb 2.0 pcmcia card, and the pocket drive via firewire. A long way for a shortcut but all good.
In the last few days, the G4 has had big problems with the pocket drive (which is fine with the powerbook). It doesnt mount. The mouse cursor goes all juddery when its plugged in and then the mac crashes. Trying to get to a solution in between the crashes, using disc utility i can see the drive but it wont mount. When i try instead to format it, it crashes. It obviously hadnt done anything about the formatting as when i plug it in again to the powerbook there are still the last files on it.
I tried restarting into techtool pro. If i do this with the pocket drive plugged in it wont start up, freezing on the startup screen. If i plug the drive in when the techtools is open it cant see it.
So problem number 1, is my G4 power supply about to die or could there be something else wrong? If it is the power supply, is there a cheaper solution than spending a few hundred euro on a new apple one for an almost obsolete machine? Bear in mind my monitor is an apple 17" so if i replace the machine i have to replace the monitor.
Possible solution in the meantime to make sure the wife gets her kitchen nightmares et all, the only way i can think to get the files from G4 to powerbook so then onto ijoy, is a wired or wireless network.
So i can either pull out the ethernet from the router and stick it into the powerbook, will this create a network immediately?
Or i can use wifi. Is this easy? I figure it will be slow as the powerbook is 802.11b. Can i add a usb wifi 802.11g card (no point in n as the airport extreme box is g) and will this make much of a difference?
Sorry long ramble, thanks for any advice...

I do not see any indication of the Mhz/Ghz in the batter door.  I have attached pictures of the interior.  Hope this helps.  I do not, necessarily, want to recover any data.  My intention was to only wipe existing data, and then use this older unit just for accessing the internet.  Since I could access the wireless network before the wipe, it did not occur to me that I would not be able after the reinstall.  Thanks

  • Upgrading Ram in Powerbook 1.67GHz Hi-Res

Is the RAM I wrote below is ok for my powerbook?
    SAMSUNG/MICRON DDR2 533 PC2-4200 CL4 64x8 200-Pin

  • Upgrading from Broken Powerbook

    Hi,
I am in Africa right now serving with the Peace Corps. I had my 17" Powerbook stolen. It was recovered, but it was bent pretty badly. It still beeps, but that is about it. So despite a lack of funds I managed to order a 15" MacBook and some friends are sending it over...
My question, if I can recover the hard drive intact from the Powerbook, what is the best way to get the data to my MacBook? I do have a firewire/usb 2.5" enclosure I can use. No way to get anything to a Apple service center, but I do have a 20 years of experience with PCs. (The Powerbook was my first Mac and now I am hooked)
    Many thanks,
    Robert, PCV CD/IT
    Cape Verde

You might be able to migrate data from the PowerBook by placing it in FireWire Target Disk mode or using Migration Assistant on the MacBook Pro; to do this, hook the two machines up with a FireWire cable. When turning on the MacBook Pro for the first time, you will have the option of using the Migration Assistant. FireWire Target Disk mode is used by holding down the T key as the PowerBook is turned on, and will cause the PowerBook's hard disk to appear on the MacBook Pro's desktop.
If not, move the hard drive into the enclosure and connect it to your computer with the FireWire cable. If you have set up any accounts on the MacBook Pro prior to connecting the drive, do not turn on FileVault for any account yet. Open the Migration Assistant in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and use it to migrate the data from the drive. You can also copy files from the FireWire enclosure by dragging them into your home folder or the Applications folder; this method should not be used for items in other parts of the hard disk.

  • Upgrade this 2005 PowerBook or fork out for MacBook?

This is a refinement of an earlier Q.
    My problems/desires are:
    1. I'm fed up with being unable to avail myself of stuff that needs Tiger/Leopard.
    2. My 80GB internal HD is constantly filling up.
    3. I have no webcam and need (a good) one for work.
    4. My G4 gets taxed by certain things, e.g. trimming clips in QuickTime.
    5. My 160GB Freecom external drive for file backup isn't adequately powered by the G4 and needs an inconvenient mains powered hub.
All the above (not sure about 5.) would be fixed by getting a new/refurb MacBook (Pro), but cash is tight. So I'm considering this:
    1. Buy Leopard.
    2. Buy & install 2GB of RAM.
    3. Buy & install 250GB internal drive.
    4. Buy an iSight or something cheaper that's as good.
    5. (recommended by an expert here) Buy another, bootable external drive to do a total system backup while I install Leopard (and for common sense protection thereafter).
All of that costs a fair chunk of the price of say a refurbished MB Pro, and is more trouble. Any comments? Specific Qs:
    1. Macupgrades.co.uk advises against installing an internal HD, but could I do it? (I put one into a titanium G4 a while back.)
    2. Any recommendations for a 250GB HD?
    3. Any recommendations for good webcams cheaper than iSight?
    4. Any recommendations for external drives that will be adequately powered by my PowerBook?
    5. Would I regret doing all of this in a year's time because of my G4's ageing? E.g. the screen is still fine, but is it likely to deteriorate?
Many thanks for reading and replying.

    Yes.
    2. Any recommendations for a 250GB HD?
There's only one on the market that you can use:
    https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD2500BEVE/
It may be available elsewhere for up to $10 less.
    3. Any recommendations for good webcams cheaper than iSight?
Nope — I don't know the first thing about 'em.
    4. Any recommendations for external drives that will be adequately powered by my PowerBook?
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MS4U7250GB16/
Connect it via FireWire, not USB.
    5. Would I regret doing all of this in a year's time because of my G4's ageing? E.g. the screen is still fine, but is it likely to deteriorate?
It has already deteriorated, as you'd see if you could compare it side-by-side with the way it used to look. That deterioration will continue. How long you'll continue to be happy with it, I can't guess.
To $230 for the two drives, add $100 for 2GB RAM, $130 for Leopard, and something more for a webcam. That's probably at least $500 invested in a 3-year-old Powerbook. It may keep you happy for another couple of years, or it may not. You'll have to decide whether that's preferable to spending 2x-3.5X as much for a refurbed MacBook or MacBook Pro, with a year's warranty and the assurance that it will run the next version of OSX.

  • Can i get a replacement/upgrade for my powerbook?

    hi,
my powerbook has gone in for repeat repairs lately, none of which fix the problem.
what are apple's procedures for deciding that the powerbook is just NOT going to be fixed. in other words, when will they just give me a new one?
mac geniuses have replaced hard drive twice, and logic board, and reinstalled OS multiple times, and it still hangs as soon as i get it home.
i'm about to go back to the store, and i want to know what kind of case i have for asking for a new machine. how many times are they going to try to make the same repairs? my warranty runs out in one month, and i need this problem solved before that time comes.

Welcome to Apple Discussions, nay nay.
My understanding is that after three major hardware failures within 12 months you can negotiate for a replacement or refund (depending on the circumstances).
Since you have already had two replacement drives and a logic board, then I think you have a pretty good argument for a replacement. However, they may not always be pro-active in letting you have a replacement so you may have to be prepared to argue your case. If necessary you may have to negotiate directly with the store manager rather than just a Genius.

  • Best way to upgrade to a PowerBook from an iBook

I'm getting a used Powerbook G4 and have an iBook G4 what is the best way to get everything(software, settings, OS, etc [iBook has Tiger, powerbook will have Panther]) over to the PowerBook?
    iBook G4 12" 768MB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Tim,
Even though your new PB may be used, you can use the
Setup Assistant in 10.3.x (Migration Assistant in
    10.4.x, located in the /Applications/Utilities
folder) that would normally start up when you first
boot up a brand new computer.
You want to connect the two computers together with a
FireWire 400 cable, and boot the iBook with the "T"
key held down so it starts up in FireWire Disk mode.
The Assistant will do the rest/is self explanatory.

I recently updated to PB myself from a 3 yr old iBook
and this process worked flawlessly. It may take a
    while, but it works!
    Good luck!
After this process would I end up with Tiger on my (new to me) used PowerBook or would it still have Panther? I guess what I'm asking is, would the PowerBook end up exactly like my iBook is now, OS and all?

I just bought and intalled Tiger and then ran software updater and brought all my apps up to date, and now I can't get my video to work on ichat 3.1.5. Says: Camera in use by another application. Of course there are no other apps running. Cam will not work with Yahoo messenger either. Is this anothe Quicktime glich and does anyone now a fix.

    Hi Ralph
And thanks for your help. I had seen your "fix" in an earlier thread and tried most of it with no success. My Sony DV cam worked just fine before the upgrade, and still works with imovie, so I know the camera works. Quicktime Pro says: "no recording device found" ichat says: "your camera is in use by another application" and Yahoo messenger doesn't acknowledge that a cam is hooked up. My profiler sees the cam connected on fire wire.
Could it be quicktime interfering like it did with 10.3.9 ? - back then I had to unistall the quicktime update(don't remeber witch one) and reinstall an earlier version to make it work again.
