I am looking to upgrade my Macbook Hard Drive.
I'm looking to buy the WD 320GB Scoripo, are there any compatibility problems with this drive??

Apple provides instructions for users to replace the hard drive themselves. So, installing "user installable parts" will not void your warranty. However, any repairs to damage that may occur by installing the drive yourself won't be covered.
The Mac Genius at an Apple retail store will NOT install third party hardware into your MacBook. They will install anything they sell in the store for you. But, since Apple does not sell bare hard drives, they won't do the install for you. Another Apple Authorized Service Provider probably will install the drive for you, for a fee.

Is it possible to replace the Harddrive without voiding the warranty? Since in the Envy I think it is neccessary to open the case.

To install dual SSD's in an HP envy 15 in RAID 0 configuration you need to put 2 1.8" SSD's into the 2.5" drive bay.
To do this you need this bracket, and 2 connector leads. Here are some pictures I found during my searches on the WEB.
Question 1. Does anyone in HP know the Part Number for this dual 1.8" SSD Bracket?
I cannot find it anywhere on the web or via HP PartSurfer.
I would like to order this bracket if it is worthwhile.
Here is a picture of the dual SSDs inside an Envy 15 (lower RHS of picture).
My next questions.
Question 2. Is it worthwhile putting 2 SSDs in Raid 0 configuration in an HP Envy 15 (original release) today?
Question 3. Has SSD technology moved on in the past 1.5 years such that the read / write speed of the latest single 2.5" SSD is faster/ as fast as the motherboard in the HP Envy 15 can handle anyhow?
Question 4. Is there any documentation from HP on how to set up dual SSD's in RAID 0 if it is worthwhile today?
Question 5. Is there a recommended 2.5" SSD for the HP Envy 15?
I would really appreciate a response from someone in the HP Envy Technical Team on this if possible.

How to upgrade hard drive without resinstalling Mac OS X

Hello everyone. I have a MacBook Pro 17'' with the original 160GB HD but now I want to upgrade my hard drive to a Seagate 500GB. My question is, how can I upgrade the HD without reinstalling and setting up all my stuff again?
Can this be done with TimeMachine and a Time Capsule? Any other option?

yes, this can be done with Time machine. you'll need an external drive (could be a Time capsule or a directly attached drive). make backup of your current system. then replace the hard drive. then boot from the leopard install DVD and use the system restore utility in the utilities menu at the top to restore your old system from the backup onto the new hard drive. note that the new drive should be properly formatted: Mac os extended journaled format with GUID partition scheme. you'll most have to reformat the drive using disk utility first before using the restore utility.
another option is to put your old hard drive into an external hard drive enclosure (USB or firewire), install the new hard drive in the MB, then boot from the external drive and clone it to the new internal. you can use CCCloner or Superduper for cloning. again, reformat the new internal first. or you can clone your internal to an external (if you have a regular external drive but don't have an enclosure), then replace the internal drive, boot from the external and clone it back to the internal.

No easy fix for a few reasons:
1) Bootcamp requires a hybrid MBR for the partition table. That is: both an MBR and a GPT partition table at the same time with the GPT one having all partitions and the MBR one having only the ones that are relevant, but at most 4 of them (including the protective partition and the Macintosh HD one). Which leads us to:
2) The MBR part of the hybrid partition table cannot work with 3TB hard drives. MBR is limited to 2TB.
I am working on a small EFI app that can boot Windows in EFI mode on a Mac and that would mean that you can go GPT only on your system. The progress of the app is slow due to the nature of EFI and for now requires that you do an unattended Windows install with slipstreamed graphics drivers, but we are adding VGA loading on top of EFI quite soon after the rest of the app stabilises. The status of the app is documented at:
Win7 x64 booting natively via EFI (no bios emulation)
Windows does actually successfully boot in EFI mode on most Macs (anything with a 64bit EFI should work), but does not have graphics support even if you load the driver due to the VGA pci registers not being set by the firmware. Furthermore, in Setup and Safe Mode, Windows uses VGA instead of GOP which is a failure by design since VGA is a BIOS standard and not really compatible without hacks with EFI. Other EFI implementations also add VGA compatibility at a high cost to the firmware complexity for the VGA cards available on the market that don't actually contain anything in their ROM except the VGA BIOS.
My recomendations:
1) Install on a second smaller hard-drive; or
2) Wait for the EFI app to come out officially and use that to boot Windows Vista SP1 x64 and Windows 7 x64 (RTM and SP1) in the native EFI mode.
3) Wait for Windows 8 which supports VGA-less booting acording to the AMD presentation at UEFI Plugfest.

Upgrade MacBook Hard Drive

While it is obvious that I can upgrade a hard drive, I would like to do so without reinstalling software and, as importantly, changing an identifier (such as a serial number) so that my online backup software will not balk when trying to back up. I hope that this is clearer than it sounds but essentially, I want the new, larger hard drive that I install, to be identified as the same as the smaller that I had after the upgrade. (Do not want iTunes to consider this a new device, don't want Carbonite to think its a different drive and make me reupload everything, etc.) How would this work?

Ahsley is correct. Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper are two most common and most recommended options. You put your new drive in an external enclosure and clone your internal drive to the external one. Reboot the machine holding down the Option key and select the external drive just to make sure it is working properly (it will be much slower as it will be running over the firewire or USB port... both of which are slower than the internal SATA). After you're convinced everything is working properly, just swap the drives.
To the best of my knowledge, nothing is based off of a drive serial number... but rather the logic board serial. Using a drive serial number for any sort of verification would be a bad idea considering how often they fail or are upgraded.

Hello, I have the mid 2007 released intel based imac. I am about to change my 1GB memory to 4GB memory per the info I found on the Apple support site (upgrading memory on mid 2007 imacs or later). I also want to upgrade my hard-drive to 1TB as I need more storage and already using 2 1-TB externals for pics and other misc files that take up too much space. My husband says he doesnt think it can be done and I might as well suck it up and buy a new imac already with the specs I want. I am considering this but am so attached to my current imac (my first ever) that I would prefer to upgrade if possible before just jumping into a new one. My 2 questions are...
1) can my harddrive be upgraded to 1 or 2TB? If so, should I pay someone to do this, meaning is it difficult?
2) Does Apple do this and how much would this typically cost me? Do you think it is smarter to just trade this old one in for a new one?

Yes, they are upgradable, and it isn't nearly as hard as the other posters will have you believe.
If you have the aptitude to do surgery on computers than yes this might be correct, however if you don't I think it would be difficult and not recommended.
Here is one site that shows how to do it, if you feel comfortable doing this type of work there you go. Oh one last thing if you have any AppleCare remaining this would certainly void it.

Least painful way to upgrade my hard drive if I don't want to use an image.

I want to upgrade my hard drive and DO NOT want to restore from an image–mostly because there is fifteen years worth of crap on my current image so I want to start completely fresh and copy over only what I currently need.
I bought the new drive. I have other drives with backup images on them. I just downloaded DivXInstaller. Now that I have all of the parts I don't know what to do with them.
What's the least painful way to do this?

Is not the current HDD in your MBP a boot drive? If so and you have Yosemite installed, you can boot into the recovery partition. From the 4 option menu you can use Disk Utility. If you have the NEW HDD connected to the MBP it will appear in Disk Utility. Click on that drive to format in Disk Utility>Erase. After formatting, go to the 'Reinstall OSX' option and install the OSX onto the external HDD. When finished swap the drives.

Copy just those files. But that isn't ideal. You really want a differential system that efficiently updates the backup set with all new and updated files. See Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy for a suggested strategy.

Hi all....I have spent weeks tidying up my music collection. I moved it all to Itunes media folder. Since I don't like how Itunes manages this folder I manually organised it myself so that albums where together etc. I am wondering if there is a fool proof way to move my media folder to an external hard drive without letting itunes manage and consolidate files as this will reverse all the work I did in organising. Album artwork, Automatically add to iTunes, iTunes media, Mobile apllications, podcasts, previous itunes libraries, voice memos. Then it has files itunes preferences, itunes libary extras, itunes libarry genius, itunes libraary, itunes music library......Is there stuff in there that doesnt need to be there as some are repeated in itunes media folder which contains....automatically add to itunes, books, downloads, home videos, mobile applications, music, podcasts, tones, voice memos and itunes preferences. I would like to know how I can reformat my Toshiba hard drive without affecting the hidden recovery partition? I would like to get rid of the preinstalled Windows 7 OS and replace it with Windows XP, which is not as bloated. Also, does anyone know of a good 'free' disk scrubber program? I actually have the original 'disk scrubber' software, but the software disk just won't work any more. Finally, I tried to get the computer ready for the drive scrubbing, but I still can't change the disk order on my Toshiba laptop. I did get into the 'bios' screen by hitting the F8 key on startup, which did bring up the 'boot menu' screen. When I selected the cd/dvd drive and then hit the F10 key to save the change, nothing happened! I put in a data disk, but the laptop still booted into the Windows 7 OS. If I can't get the laptop to boot into the cd/dvd drive, I don't think that I can erase the hard drive and put Windows XP on since I wouldn't be able to boot up the laptop with the Windwos XP disk. Is that true? Anyway, without changing the boot order, I can't do anything. Please help! Thanks!

If you use the recovery that is on the hidden partition (hold down the zero key while starting up computer) then your OS reinstall will not affect that hidden partition, just overwrite the c: drive.

Have you tried the Seagate SSHD connected externally to the MBP via USB? The drive itself may be faulty.

I would take a look at the internal drives offered by both Crucial (click the link "Internal Hard Drives Now Available") and OWC. I would stay away from Western Digital drives as they seem to have problems on a number of Mac models.
You can also shop for RAM at Crucial and OWC - just select the System Scanner tab at the Crucial website to find out which memory is right for your machine.
