Upgrading my IOS will delete my files if I don't do a backup??

I want to upgrade to the new IOS, and I want to know if I do it, will my files be erase? or do I have to do a back up first???? Please help!!!

This really would be a more appropriate question for the forum for your iOS device (iPad, iPhone or iPod touch) but anyway, if you upgrade from iOS 4 to iOS 5, yes, all your files on the iOS device will be erased. So you need to make sure that all your apps and content are synched to iTunes on your computer and that you have a current backup of the iOS device (if you sync the device before running the upgrade, it should back up automatically). Then once the upgrade is complete, restore the device from your most recent backup and sync back your apps and content.
If you already have iOS 5 or 5.1 and just want to upgrade to iOS 5.1.1, then nothing should be removed, though it's still wise to have all your content synched and a current backup before performing the upgrade.
If you have additional questions, I'm sure someone in the forum for your device or the iTunes forum can provide further help.
Regards.

If you update via iTunes al synced media like aps and music has to be in the itunes libary otherwise they will be lost
If you update via Settings>General>Software Update (starting with iOS 5), nothing is lost is update is successful. However, sometimes glitches occur and you have to restore via iTunes

Try a reset. Press & hold the Power and Home buttons together for 10+ seconds, ignoring the red power-off slider, until you see the Apple logo. It is safe to do, there should be no content loss. It is the same as rebooting your computer.
If that does not work, restore the iPad to the factory settings.

Yes. First you must sync your device and create a saved backup, then update.

  • IPad1 upgrade to iOS 5 -- large OTHER file storage?

    Hi everyone
Been upgrading to iOS 5 today like most people.  I am finding that after the upgrade and resync, my OTHER file storage fills up the supposedly "free" space on my iPad.  Pre-update (ie this morning), I had about 7GB free on my 32GB iPad and "other" files were <500MB of data.
After the iOS 5 update, I now have 6.7GB of "Other" files and have no idea what they are, how they got there and how to clear this space..
    does anyone have suggestions/thoughts?
I had the same problem on my iPhone4 yesterday with the update but i deleted/restored a number of times and finally the space shows up as it should.. "free space"
    thanks!

You probably have a currupt backup. You can delete the backup by going to iTunes Preferences, Devices tab. Or better yet, rename the current backup so iTunes creates a new one.
Use Windows Explorer to go to:
    On Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\
On Windows vista and Windows 7
    \Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\
You will need to set explorer to show hidden files.
Once there rename "backup" to "backup.sav", The next time you try to back up your iPhone iTunes will create a new backup.

  • Upgrading to ios5 will delete media!?!

I have an iPhone 4 and so does my girlfriend.  I have a Macbook Pro and she has a Macbook.  I always connect my iphone to my macbook pro and it regulalry backs up my iphone and syncs.  So I upgraded to ios 5 yesterday.  There were some error messages but eventually I got upgraded.  I then connected my girlfriend's iphone to her macbook and when I went to click upgrade, it popped up with a message that said if I upgrade to ios 5 on this device that all media and itunes purchases will be deleted and that I should connect the iphone to a computer that I regularly sync with.  Huh?  My girlfriend would only connect her iphone to her macbook.  I didn't perform the upgrade because I was concerned that her camera roll/photos and itunes purchases made on her iphone would be deleted.  I did do a backup and sync.  Is that enough?  If I do the upgrade would I be able to restore from a backup?  She will kill me if I lose her data on her iphone.

The update to iOS 5.0 or higher ia an erase/restore deal. So, follow the directions here:

  • When i upgrade my ios, will I loose my voice memos

I have heard that Upgrading my ios on my iPhone that I will loose all of my manually recorded voice memos (not voice messages).  They are too big to email off of the iPhone.  any help is appreciated.
    Ralph

It is always a good idea to back up before an upgrade
Back up to iTunes will preserve your memos in the event you have to do a restore
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT4946
    What iTunes backs up
Photos (photos, screenshots, images saved, and videos taken) and Saved Photos (in devices without a camera).
Contacts* and Contact Favorites. (You should regularly sync your contacts to a computer or cloud service, such as iCloud.)
Health (only if you have an encrypted backup).
Calendar accounts, events, and subscribed calendars.
Safari bookmarks, cookies, history, offline data, and currently open pages.
    Autofill for webpages.
    Offline web app cache/database.
    Notes.
Mail accounts. (Mail messages aren't backed up.)
    Microsoft Exchange account configurations.
    Call history.
Messages (iMessage and carrier SMS or MMS pictures and videos).
Voicemail token. (This isn't the voicemail password, but it is used for validation when connecting. This is only restored to a phone with the same phone number on the SIM card.)
    Voice memos.

In short: you can't delete a file.
Did you close all accessing streams before deleting? Has something else a lock on the file?

  • ITunes is deleting podcast files when I don't want it to.

I installed the latest version of iTunes and set my podcast settings to only dowload podcasts from the last week (since it was trying to download podcast files that I had previously listened to, then deleted), and delete podcasts was set to off.
Now, all of the sudden, it is deleting podcast files that are 1) older than a week and 2) dowloaded with the new iTunes.
I want to go back to the old iTunes behaviour of downloading only the most recent podcast (unless it has been previously downloaded) and only deleting files if done manually!

I have to agree. I've been using iTunes/iPods exclusively for listening to podcasts since 2008, and within the past year it's just gotten increasingly frustrating and confusing to use both iTunes and my iPod for this purpose. I just found this thread because my iPod auto-deleted a podcast that I'd only listened to for 10 minutes; and I don't want it to ever delete podcasts without my consent. Truly infuriating.

  • When time machine backs up at night, it will delete some files...

    Hello,
I have a Mac Mini Server that is backed up via Time Macine every night at midnight. On occassion, when I come in the next morning some files on the server are deleted. I will restore them. Weeks will pass with no issues. It will do it again. I have not seen a pattern to it but it deletes the same files. It is getting frustrating. Has anyone experienced this or know a way to fix??
    Gary

There's no normal circumstance where Time Machine should delete files on a source disk for backups, so there's probably something else going on here; maybe a latent volume corruption, application-specified file deletions, errant user commands or some errant maintenance script, unauthorized system access, or some other bug.
Disk hardware errors usually don't manifest as file deletions, so I wouldn't start out with that theory.  Usually chunks of files disappear, and you start seeing directory and other file system errors.  Then your disk can vanish.
If there's no pattern to the deletions, then I'd check the volume using Disk Utility and verify the structures.  See if there's something off with the disk.
If the system is 'net connected, I'd probably also change all the login credentials, lock down unnecessary services, and look to install a firewall and possibly configure a DMZ, depending on the circumstances.  Also check the server logs and see if there are any unexpected accesses.
If you're not current with the web-facing software you're running on the server — content management systems or other add-on tools, or with OS X itself — then do upgrade that to current.
Without a pattern, there's not all that much to go on.
If your server security has been breached and if the attackers are smart, changing the passwords probably won't keep them out.  (It's not certain that your security has been breached here.  Far from it.  It's just one of the various possibilities; of the situations that can cause random file deletions.)

  • Upgrade to ios 5 deleted some important e-mails and now won't retrieve e-mail from ISP???

Once we upgraded to the new ios 5 we lost e-mails on both the iPad and also on the iMac.  It also has stopped being able to get new e-mail from my isp Comcast.  It has the little circle running up in the top corner but can't get e-mail even though it still has all the isp info there including smtp and passwords etc. etc.

I updated my wife's 3GS to 5.0.1 and some of her emails were deleted, and it will not receive any email from the server either. My sister had no problems until she updated to 5.0.1 either. After it, her 4 was going very slow, wouldn't make any sounds for notifications, and apple tech walked her through everything. She received a new iPhone 4 from the apple store, and it did the exact same thing. Apple's answer was it is a hardware fault. It seems like all around the new update has more problems than it fixes.

  • Upgraded to ios 5 deleted all data

    Hi.
My friend wanted me to update his ipod touch 4g to ios 5 and in the process I lost all of the data from his ipod. I backed it up and restored to ipod touch from backup but all of his music, podcasts, and apps/app data is gone. I did not transfer purchaces from the ipod because I did not want his data in my iTunes liobrary.
    Thanks

    Itunes 10.6.3.25

That is correct.  Itunes content is not part of the back at all.
If the apps/music/podcasts/etc were not on the computer then they would be deleted.
Your friend will have to sync with his own computer to get them back or redownload them.

  • The trash keeps saying that it will delete my files immediately

Hello to all. I have a little problem with the trash. When I throw something into it, it says that my file is going to be deleted immediately, and it doesn't hold any files inside. This keeps doing all the time, in every file I throw inside it. What should I do?

Go to /Applications /Utilities/Terminal and launch it.
At the prompt, copy and paste this command
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
    Press Return.
You will be asked to enter your admin password. It will be invisible.
    Enter it and press Return.
Log out and back in or restart.
