Upgrading my iPod Touch to iOS 5.

Upgrading my iPod Touch (bought in 2008) to iOS 5. The directions in iTunes stated that I needed to restore it to original settings. Now it’s stating: This computer has previously been synced with an iPod or another iOS.  and it asks if I want to: Set up as a new iPod. or Restore from backup of: (my ipod’s name). Which do I chose?  Am I on the right path to upgrading?

You want to restore frombackup if you want to retain app data and other itmes currently on your iPod.  Note that music and some othr things are not in the backup.  Also see:

How do I upgrade my iPOD Touch from iOS 4.2.1 to 5?  I've reset it, erased it, but still won't install iOS5.

You most likely have a 2G iPod touch which cannot go beyond iOS 4.2.1.  If it is an 8gb or 16 gb iPod without a camera, it is a 2G iPod.

  • How do I upgrade my iPod touch to IOS 5.0.1 without losing my app data?

I want to upgrade my iPod touch (4.3.3) to IOS 5.0.1, but I don't want to lose my app data (Tiny Tower, etc.)
I transferred all my purchases to the host computer. I also backed up my app data. Before I update the IOS software on my iPod touch, I'd like to find out if the app data on my iPod will be erased as part of the upgrade.
If so, will a restore from backup restore the app data?

  • I upgraded my iPod Touch to iOS 7 and now I'm having issues?

I have the latest generation iPod touch and I upgraded to iOS 7. It installed fine but since installing a bunch of my music disappeared and when I select a song to play it will skip the song I selected, move on to a new song, and delete that song off my iPod completely. Furthermore, when I try to sync the iPod with iTunes (yes I have the latest iTunes as well), my iPod won't sync, it just sits on "Step 6 of 6, waiting for changes to be applied" for hours. This is all extremely frustrating as the only thing I use my iPod for is listening to music. Is there any way to resolve any of this?

    Maybe:
"Waiting for changes to be applied": Apple Support Communities
    Next
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Upgrading original iPod Touch to iOS 4.2

I have one of the original iPod Touches that's currently running iOS 3.1.3, and I wanted to update to 4.2 for the Psych Vision app. When I started, I got the message that updating would delete all media. Right now my iPod has music on it that isn't on iTunes, which means I couldn't retrieve some songs if the device gets wiped. Will the upgrade delete the music on my iPod, and if so, is there some way to get the songs from the iPod to the PC so I don't have to get my CDs and manually load them onto iTunes?

I had something like that happen with an iOS 4.[something] upgrade on my iPod touch 2nd gen. I ended up having to get my other computer to recognize the device. I was then able to sync to the original computer. I can't remember exactly what I did, but I definitely did not sync my device to my other computer -- I just used it to validate my iPod touch.
I had no trouble upgrading to iTunes 10.latest today, or iPod touch v. 4.latest. But Apple has sensitized me to be fearful of their software, and of upgrading, by having nearly bricked my iPod touch on that earlier upgrade. Apple seems not to realize that their products are expensive. If I'd had that same experience with an iPad, rather than a nearly 2-year-old device they'd have lost a customer for life. As it is, they're on thin ice.

  • Unable to upgrade a new iPod touch to iOS 5 (Windows)

My daughter has a Windows 7 laptop, and I am trying to upgrade her iPod touch to iOS 5. I have already upgraded her iTunes. When I connect her iPod, it asks if I want to update the software. I say yes. A few minutes later, it says "backing up device," but the progress bar never gets past a centimeter. I have left it alone for HOURS, and I have tried this several times. My husband tried turning off Windows Defender and the firewall, not sure if that would have made a difference but it didn't anyways. We don't have any other anti-virus running on the computer. Why won't her iPod touch back up?
    Thanks in advance--
    Susan

Close iTunes and disconnnect the iPod.  The move the existing backup file to a new location so that iTues has to create an entire new file.  The file is located here:
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: If you do not see the AppData or Application Data folders, you may need to show hidden files (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7), or iTunes may not be installed in the default location. Show hidden files and then search the hard drive for the Backup directory.
The try again. If necessary, you may have to place your iPod in recovery mode to get iTunes to see the iPod so that you can update the iPod. For recovery mode see:

I have upgraded my iPod touch and it didnt respond to the upgrade. I have tried restarting it , that doesnt work. I need help i am lost without my ipod please help. Any ideas besides restarting it ?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
