Upgrading my old emac

Hi, I have a rather old emac which I bought during 2004. The spec is:
Proc: 1ghz powerpc G4
Mem: 1gb SDRAM
OS: 10.5.8
HD: approx 80gb
This old mac does not have wireless facility and, therefore, is not connected to the internet.
I am wanting to completely reinstall the system and it won't now recognise the disks that were supplied.
I did upgrade the OS but am unable to find any disks.
What I want to do and this is what I am asking all you lovely people is:
How can I reinstall the system
What's the best OS that I should use (I am hoping to use this for design work - Photoshop/Illustrator/Indesign eventually)
What's the most economical way to get this old thing wirelessly connected to my broadband?
I am extremely short of cash at the moment so looking to do this as moneysaving as possible.
On the back of this I am hoping to upgrade the OS of my lovely faithful macbook from 10.5.8 to hopefully lion.
Any ideas would be gratefully taken on board!
Kind regards
Terri

Although it is possible to run 10.5 on a G4, from personal experience i'd say it's better to stay on 10.4 for speed, especially with those specs. Take a look at the applications (and their version) that you intend to run on the machine for compatibility when deciding which of these systems to install, as there are quite alot of apps that left 10.4 support behind.
What versions are the install disks that you have at hand? If they are machine specific and not booting there are other ways to use them.
The most economical way to get wireless working is to find a compatible USB WiFi dongle, there are more and more these days that officially support OS X, but you need to double check it supports the system version you are installing. Also it's better to get one that can plug n' play (so that it uses Apple's own kexts) 3rd party kexts introduce the possibility for system instability, especially for hardware. Dongles with a broadcom chipset used to be the most compatible in 10.4 but google is your fiend here when deciding what to buy.

  • How do I import emails from my old eMac to iMac G5

I have recently upgraded to an iMac G5. I need to copy all my old emails (3 years worth) from my old eMac to the new computer. What options do I have? I don't want to copy anything else (applications or documents). I use Apple's Mail on both computers. Thanks.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    You're welcome.
If the eMac supports being connected to another Mac via Firewire Target Disk mode (which I believe it does), you can connect both Macs this way for the import and for manually transferring any and all data from the eMac.

  • Have 2004 eMac...screen goes black without notice. Getting a reconditioned 2005 eMac. Can I have the HD swapped from old eMac to reconditioned one without problems??? Black screen is called "collapse to black" and occurs 4-5 daily

Have 2004 eMac...screen goes black without notice.  Black screen is called "collapse to black" and occurs 4-5 daily. From what I understand, this is due to bad capicators????? Found a reconditioned 2005 eMac on line. Can I have the HD swapped from old eMac to reconditioned eMac without problems???...with regards to software applications. Old eMac is running 10.4.11 and reconditioned on runs 10.5. Suggestions, tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Might want to make sure both units are not affected. This is the range of serial number from the now-defunct Apple Repair Extention Program for USB 2.0 eMacs:
    G8412xxxxxx- G8520xxxxxx
    YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx
    VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx
A "collapse" is more indicative of a video cabling issue, but the bad caps produced such a wide range of problems that it's hard to sort through them.
If the old eMac is a USB 2.0, which a 2004 unit should be, the HD should exchange with the new one. As the last of the eMacs shipped with Tiger, the new computer should have no probelms with a 10.4 boot volume on the old drive. You can upgrade to Leopard one you have hte new disk in place.
NOTE: Takeapart and reassembly on the USB 2.0 must be done "just so" or you can permanently damage the power switch. Instructions for the USB 1.1 takeapart are slightly different , and the power swtich damage is usually caused by people using the older instructions on a newer eMac.
If you are not up to the takepart nor can you find a local computer tech who knows these. consider taking the drive out of the dead computer(won't make much difference if you damage that one as it's dead), buy an external Firewire enclosure, and put the old drive on it and use it to move data to the new computer. Then you can leave the external attached as a backup drive.
Is the new one a 1.42Ghz model? They have been practically trouble-free around here. We have one and it's been rock solid since we bought it as a refurb in Jan 2006. The 1.42G has the advantage of a Core Image-enabled video chipset, the ATI 9600.
And all USB 2.0 eMacs can, with modern memory modules, support up to 2G of RAM.

  • Will Mac X 10.3 work on old Emac?

I have a an old emac with Mac OS X 10.2.8
However, i need to put 10.3 or higher on and just wondered whether it would work?
    Emac
    1Ghz PowerPC G4
    Memory 512 MB Ram
Hard Drive currently have 60G left
    Will it work?

    Short answer: yes.
If you're upgrading, might as well do to 10.4 since that eill be supported longer than 10.3. You'll need the retail (black label) Tiger Install DVD (assuming you have at combo or superdrive, internal or external). Model-specific (grey label) OS X Install discs may not include to full set of drivers needed for a particular computer and can cause strange problems. 512MB RAM will run either 10.3 or 10.4 although you may want to upgrade to 640 MB or more (your model will take up to 1 GB) using Crucial as a reference and eMac - Do-It-Yourself for RAM installation instructions.
There's a handy upgrading checklist at Gulliver - OS X System maintenance. After upgrading, you'll likely need the OS X Update Combo 10.4.9 (PPC) and to use Software Update to gather various security and application updates.
One thing to be aware of: some of the 10.4 upgrades may boot the computer twice after installing. That is, you run the update, it finished the 'optimizing system' stage, restarts, you get to the grey screen / white Apple logo, and then the computer restarts again. This is normal. Also, the first startup after an OS update can take significantly longer than usual; don't interrupt the computer by trying to cycle the power or turn it off at this point! Subsequent updates will be faster than usual.
Don't forget to update any third-party utilities you have, especially anythin that adds on to the menubar or that's a disk utility program of any kind (see e.g. Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes).
The bump from 10.2.8 to 10.4.x will give you a pronouncedly more responsive feeling computer. It's well worth the effort!

  • Please help me with upgrades for my eMac.

    Hello to everyone,
I'm new to the Apple realm but far from new to hardware, software and computers.
Recently I was given (yes, miracles happen ) an old eMac 1.25GHz, 40GB, 384 Ram, i believe this is the USB 2.0 model. I immediately fell in love with it and am looking into upgrading it. I have already purchased and installed the Apple Airport Extreme card and it worked flawlessly.
Next in line is the hard drive, Combo drive to be either swapped for a Blueray but most probably for a super drive. Memory is going to go to 2 GB, I do realize this is meant to work only with 2x512 but I've read it is quite possible to go with 2x1GB. These upgrades are not the ones that bother me.
I am really, and I mean really tangled in the bluetooth capability. From here onwards everything is related to internal installation. I do have an external BT dongle, don't like the way it sticks. I know there are two parts that I need, a bluetooth module and a bluetooth antenna (or aerial). What is stopping me from purchasing the required components is the absence of any information as to model numbers, compatibility, interchangeability etc.
I've done quite a bit of research and came up with the following:
    1. Bluetooth module (board if you like) model number - Apple part number [922-6201|http://www.welovemacs.com/9226871.html] and I think that was the original that would have been the built-to-order part number. I do think it was also only a BT 1.1 version.
    2. Bluetooth antenna (or aerial) model number - [922-6402|http://www.welovemacs.com/9226402.html].
I believe the board could be exchanged with Apple part numbers 922-6530, 922-6876, 922-6871 as stated in the link above but am not positive as i do not know the dimensions of those boards and whether they would fit. Quite possibly yes but...
I could not find anything else on the antenna. Apple's Service Source manual does not list any information at all about the bluetooth module, antenna etc.
My questions are: What part number bluetooth module and antenna would fit my eMac?
More importantly: Can I purchase a newer 2.0+EDR bluetooth module and fit it inside my eMac (part number???). Anyone ever installed an internal bluetooth for an eMac? Pictures, link, site?
Thank you very much in advance.
    Regards.

    Welcome, Yonko!
I'm not up on blue rays or teeth, but there are some more basic things to figure out before getting that far.
First, find out if your eMac falls under this repair extension program. If it does, consider getting it inspected before dropping a whole bunch of money.
Second, any internal optical drive MUST be Mac-bootable. Review user reports here:
    http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
I'd bump the RAM to at least 512MB--more is better. Your eMac takes PC2700 RAM.

  • .mac mail question:I have an old emac without an intel chip...

.mac mail question:I have an old emac without an intel chip...I have a .mac email account, I would like to be able to have my emails automatically forwarded to a gmail account. I cannot access icloud with this old machine, any ideas? thanks! and aloha!

    Hello,
But you can setup iCloud email on you old Mac!
Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
    • Server name: imap.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 993
    • Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    • Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
    • Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 587
    • SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
    • Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    • Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
    Thanks to dpepper...

It wont let me do anything and all it says is shut down computer so old version can upgrade. It wont let me open the program or remove it or anything. PLease help me with this. I really like Firefox but this has been going on for 5 months now and I still dont get answers from you. How do I fix this???

  • I want to connect an old eMac to an LCD TV.

Hi, all. Thanks for reading this.
I visited my parents and found my old eMac from 9 million years (and Macs) ago. It's the 700 MHz Power PC G4 model.
I would like to connect it to my LCD TV. The TV has PC inputs (VGA) and I have the Apple mini VGA adapter and a VGA cable that I know works. I have it connected now, but the TV says "Not Supported." The TV works fine connected to my MacBook Pro and other PCs. I know that the eMac in question is a bit old- but it's a Mac!
I just want what's on the computer to display on my LCD. I'm not terribly concerned with screen resolution or whether or not I can use "screen spanning."
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks for reading!
    -Vincent.

The eMac allows only display mirroring, so what goes to an external will be limited to the res on the eMac, and with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The video chipset in that eMac is pretty dated---that might be where the trouble lies.
There are other factors like color depth and refresh rate. The TV will have to be able to work with the limited options that the eMac video hardware offers. I would start by setting the res to 1280 X 960 (the largest I have on our eMac 700) and millions of colors. See if you are offered different refresh rates. If so, try different ones
Something more basic: Have the TV connected and ON when you start the eMac. That helps the compuer find the second display. Also look on the TVs options to see if there is a setting for a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Beyond that, I'm out of ideas!

  • Is it possible to upgrade an old PB G4 to support a new iTouch?

Is it possible to upgrade an old PB G4 to support a new iTouch?
I understand I can upgrade the RAM and upgrade the internal drive.  But I don't know if that is sufficient to run a newer version OS...which ever that might be.  I think the newer ones need a dual core intel chip to run?  I plan to give my daughter a new iTouch but since I already have maxed out devices on my laptop, I thought I would just update my old PowerBook G4.

No. The current iPod touch models require Mac OS X 10.6.8, which requires an Intel Mac.

  • Problem using File Sharing to access files from my old emac.

I have a new imac and I'm trying to share files with my older emac. I can access my imac files from my old emac through File Sharing, but I can't seem to access the old emac files from my imac. On my imac I can get to the Drop Box folder through File Sharing, but when I try to open the Drop Box folder I get this error message "The folder “Drop Box” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents." What do I need to do to be able to open the Drop Box folder? Where do I need to go to change the permissions so that I can open the Drop Box folder?
    Thanks in advance,
    George

The easiest way is when you connect, connect as the admin user and you'll be able to access the entire user folder (and more). So (depending on the version of OS) select "connect as..." then put in the username and password of the user you are connecting to (so the details of the eMac you are connecting to). This should allow you to access the entire user folder.
If you select any folder or file, then press command+i (or 'get info' from the file menu in finder), it will launch a window with more info about the file/folder. At the bottom of the window you have "sharing and permissions" - in here you can (after unlocking with admin username and password) add permissions for your user.
The dropbox is usually used to transfer to a machine - so you'd generally use it to drop something from anywhere on your eMac into the dropbox on the iMac, and then you can recover it from the dropbox on the iMac. The permissions are set so anyone from the outside can only write to this folder.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your taking the time to help me with this problem.  I'm doing a healing technician training class at my church, and have most of my study material on my ipod.  It cashed this weekend which hindered my preparation for my class tomorrow night.  I went to the local "Apple Store" late last night and they could get me up and running.   They suggested that I call the APL CARD line which I did today, but they gave me a nice run around seccession, and did nothing.  Then I was lead to "Google" my question, which eventually lead me to the "Apple" site.  Praise the LORD for your help and may you be richly blessed with multiplied blessings in all that you put your hands to do.  May you receive a great harvest.  As far as I'm concerned you were used by the LORD, and are the real genius!!!

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.

  • What do I need to migrate files from old eMac to new iMac?

I just purchased a new iMac and need to transfer information from my old eMac to the new one. I have not even taken the iMac out of the box, just read over the booklet.
What do I need to have to be prepared to migrate information from the start up application?  USB cable? Firewire cable? I just want to be prepared so I can get it done at one setting.  There isn't a lot of room on the desk for 2 Mac's for an extended period of time.

When you boot the new Mac, choose Migration Assistant to transfer all your data.
