Upgrading my old OS 8.6

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to upgrade my G3 Blue and White which had this configuration:
- G3 400 MHz
- 256 Mb RAM
- HD 6 Gb Maxtor
- OS 8.6
- CD-ROM drive
Now I upgrade its hardware this way:
- 1 Gb RAM
- HD 40 Gb Maxtor
- OSX 10.3
These are the problems:
- When I turn on my PC the screen remains black, nothing happens.
- To boot the OSX I had to press a thousand times the button near the "reset" button, so I come into "text mode", I type "mac-boot" and it works.
- I cannot install the languages package in the second cd (now the OS is in english even if I choose italian during installation) because it crashes every time I try. (and not at the same point)
Somebody can help me??? Thank you very much.

The "-75" (7.5 nanoseconds) indicates that the memory chips are rated for PC-133 operation (133 MHz system bus speed), so they're a little faster than 8ns chips. This means that the DIMM is actually PC-133 and that Kingston has tested it for backward-compatibility and labeled it as PC-100. As such, I wouldn't necessarily be concerned that you have a memory problem. Is there a manufacturer's name printed on the chips (Infineon, Samsung, Toshiba, etc.)? Kingston memory varies as to manufacturer of the chips used, so you never really know what you'll get from one blister-pak to the next. Now, they often use unmarked chips or ones with "Kingston" printed on them, so you can't identify the specs without installing the memory and running a diagnostic program. For good quality, look for memory with a well-known chip manufacturer's product on the card. In addition to the names I listed above, others are Hyundai, Hitachi, LG, Micron, Nanya, Siemens, and Texas Instruments. If the chip itself is well-made, then you only have to be concerned about the quality of overall assembly of the card. Crucial memory is considered by many to be the best, because they use Micron (MT) chips - which are top quality. If you can find them secondhand (like eBay), you won't have to spend as much. With a 9 year-old computer, I try to find good deals on hardware upgrades (like memory) on the secondhand market.

  • Is it possible to upgrade an old PB G4 to support a new iTouch?

Is it possible to upgrade an old PB G4 to support a new iTouch?
I understand I can upgrade the RAM and upgrade the internal drive.  But I don't know if that is sufficient to run a newer version OS...which ever that might be.  I think the newer ones need a dual core intel chip to run?  I plan to give my daughter a new iTouch but since I already have maxed out devices on my laptop, I thought I would just update my old PowerBook G4.

No. The current iPod touch models require Mac OS X 10.6.8, which requires an Intel Mac.

Use Spotlight Search (the magnifying glass on the top right-hand corner of your menu bar) to locate your music files. Then point iTunes to those files.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your taking the time to help me with this problem.  I'm doing a healing technician training class at my church, and have most of my study material on my ipod.  It cashed this weekend which hindered my preparation for my class tomorrow night.  I went to the local "Apple Store" late last night and they could get me up and running.   They suggested that I call the APL CARD line which I did today, but they gave me a nice run around seccession, and did nothing.  Then I was lead to "Google" my question, which eventually lead me to the "Apple" site.  Praise the LORD for your help and may you be richly blessed with multiplied blessings in all that you put your hands to do.  May you receive a great harvest.  As far as I'm concerned you were used by the LORD, and are the real genius!!!

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how

don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.

hi can I have a reply to above question: I just upgraded my old versionj 3 of photoshop elements to v13  when I import photos they are not imported in the same order they are mixeds up

In the documents screen - sorry, new to this so not sure if that's the right terminology... Basically the screen showing all documents, if you drag down, there should be two options at the of of the page: Date and Name. Select Name and your list should now be in alphabetic order.
    Hope that helps.

You have 3 months of care and up to 3 years with paid AppleCare, let them handle it and bring everything in.

  • Upgrade the old iMac before migrating to a new one or not?

    Hi all,
I am planning to buy a new iMac and would like to migrate some of my stuff to it from an old iMac. And then I would also like to migrate some of my stuff from a still older MacBook onto this old iMac. Complicated enough? :-)
    In short:
Step one: stuff from my 5 year old iMac with OS 10.7.5 Lion on it migrates to -----> a brand new iMac with Yosemite.
Step two: stuff from my 8 year old MacBook with OS 10.5.8 on it (and not upgradable any further) migrates to -----> the 5 year old iMac with OS 10.7.5 Lion on it.
    Now, my questions are these:
    1) Should I first upgrade the 5 year old iMac with OS 10.7.5 Lion on it to Yosemite before migrating my stuff from it to a brand new iMac with preinstalled Yosemite or not? Recommended, not recommended, neutral, what?
    2) If the answer to the 1st question is "yes" (recommended), will I then be able to migrate my stuff from the 8 year old MacBook with OS 10.5.8 onto it? That is, will the two migration assistants (of OS 10.9 and OS 10.5) "talk" to each other at all?
Any further tips will be hugely appreciated!
    Lots of thanks in advance!

    Hi rkaufmann87,
thank you so much for your reply!
I am afraid you misunderstood me a little bit… While you kindly explain to me ways of how to migrate my data from one computer to another, my question was not so much about "how" but rather about "whether":
    a) should I first upgrade my old iMac (with 10.7.5 Lion on it) to Yosemite before migrating its data to the new iMac with preinstalled Yosemite? Will it help in any way or is it irrelevant?
    b) and if the answer is "yes" (i. e. upgrade the old iMac to Yosemite), whether the migration assistant on the 8 year old MB will then be able to "talk" to its counterpart on the now upgraded old iMac?
    Perhaps this too might help:
What I am trying to do is make two computers out of three -
    1) My wife's 8 year old MacBook will most probably go to the dustbin. Before it does, I would like to migrate her data to my 5 year old iMac which will then replace her MB (in the dustbin) and be hers forever after.
    2) I will certainly have to migrate my own data from my 5 year old iMac to the new iMac which I am about to buy.
So the question remains: upgrade the old iMac for both purposes (s. above - #1 and #2) from Lion to Yosemite - yes, no, doesn't matter, what?
    Many thanks again!

If the old ID is yours, and if your current ID was created by editing the details of this old ID (rather than being an entirely new ID), go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • I want to upgrade my old airport express to the new express. Can I just switch out the old for the new or must I delete the old network first and start from scratch with the new express?

I want to upgrade my old airport express to the new express. Can I just switch out the old for the new or must I delete the old network first and start from scratch with the new express?

It is not necessary to delete your old wireless networks first, but doing so may eliminate confusion. If you wish to do that, open System Preferences > Network, and select Wi-Fi from the left column. Click the Advanced... button, then select your old wireless networks and delete them with the "–" (minus) button. Make sure the "Remember networks this computer has joined" remains checked.
    OK then Apply.
This prevents your Mac from searching for your previous network which will no longer exist.
A new Express creates an open wireless network that you must select before you can configure it. It appears in your Wi-Fi menu like this:
Select it. AirPort Utility will load and walk you through its configuration.
Edit: If you are really using OS X 10.5.1 as shown in your profile, the above screenshot is not applicable. Instead, select the network called "Apple network nnnnnn" and then launch AirPort Utility.

  • I would like to upgrade my old iBook 10.4?

How would I upgrade my old iBook 10.4?

Others have provided useful information.  Realize though that even if you update to OSX 10.5.8 you will still be 7 years behind the newest system.  People stopped writing software for 10.5 several years ago, and your computer is part of the pre-Intel series which means many of those who still wrote for 10.5 wrote for Intel and not PPC.  Your computer can never be upgraded to Intel so you're stuck there.  That's not to say you shouldn't upgrade but if your intent is to have the best iBook you can have and one that can survive in the modern world, you may end up spending several hundred dollars on upgrades that still will leave you with a computer that's years behind and can never do some of the things modern computers can do.  For those several hundred dollars you could jump ahead to an early Intel model which still has a few more years useful life before it too is hopelessly outdated.

  • I am trying to find out if I can upgrade my old airport express from WEP to WPA2?  If so, how do I do that?

I am trying to find out if my old Airport Express can be upgraded from WEP to WPA2?  If so, does anyone know how to do this?  I have a new PC for work reasons and I cannot get online with my WEP password.  I realize now this is why my family and friends who bring PC's into the house cannot connect - I need WPA2 for PC, and besides, I should upgrade anyway as this is more secure than WEP.  Thanks for any help!

    Clone your system.
    Install the 10.6.8 Java update.
Clone back from your clone you made before installing the update when finished.
