Upgrading My ROM Version

I have a G3 desktop with a 300MHz processor, 1MB backside cache, but it is a Rev A ROM board ($77D.40F2). Did someone swap out my Rev B chip before I bought it on ebay? Can I just put in a Rev B chip onto my motherboard without creating other compatibility issues? I just want to be sure I can run three 256MB RAM chips in my computer (they are the 128 chip (16 modules per chip) version).
Runtherace2006

The beige G3s are compatible with low-density (PC100/133) 256 MB DIMMs, having 16 chips - 8 per side. The high-density 256 MB DIMMs with only 8 chips on one side won't work. Additionally, the desktop model requires low-profile DIMMs (max. height of 1.15"), to clear the underside of the drive bay chassis.
I think it was in May or June of '98 that the Rev. B ROMs were phased in, along with the #820-0991-B motherboard having the Rage Pro graphics chip. Check the motherboard part # and/or the production date on the rear label, to determine whether your G3 is original. Some sellers downgraded the ROM card on later boards, so they could sell them separately. I've never had any SCSI issues with my G3s having a Rev. B or Rev. C ROM. The upgrade shouldn't pose any compatibility issues¹, but you need to be careful when pulling up the ROM card. If you're not careful, you can break out one of the slot's card guides. It's best to apply downward pressure on the card guide, as you gradually pull up on the card, alternating from opposite ends of the slot.
¹The Sonnet Tempo Trio card isn't compatible with the Rev. C ROM.

  • BOOT ROM VERSION ISSUES WITH MINI MAC POWERPC G4 (1.2)

    HI,
I AM HAVING SOME BOOT PROBLEMS ON REBUILDING MY MAC MINI. WHENEVER I PUT IN A BRAND NEW COPY OF EITHER PANTHER OR TIGER THE BOOT SCREEN WITH THE APPLE LOGO CRASHES AND FUNNY GRAPHICS APPEARS, RESULTING IN A FORCED REBOOT AND USING F12 TO EJECT THE CD. THE MAC MINI IS FINE BOOTING OFF OF ITS OWN MANUFACTURE CD, WHICH IS A COPY OF PANTHER, BUT WON'T UPGRADE WITH ANY TIGER DISKS. I HAVE EVEN MANAGED TO CHANGE THE DISKS WITH SOMEBODY ELSE WHO WAS SUCCESSFUL IN UPGRADING TO TIGER.
I HAVE LOOKED ON THE INTERNET AND OTHER PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY MENTIONED THAT I SHOULD CHANGE/UPDATE MY BOOT ROM VERSION FROM 4.8.9F1 TO 4.9.8F4.
DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHERE I CAN GET THIS BOOT ROM UPDATE? I HAVE LOOKED ON APPLE DOWNLOADS, BUT NOTHING APPEARS TO HELP. ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS APPREACIATED.
    MANY THANKS
    SUPERHEROTIMO

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
First, a word of etiquette, writing your post in ALL CAPS is considered the same thing as yelling. Please don't use ALL CAPS when writing your messages.
Exactly which Mac mini do you have? Is it a G4 Mac mini running at 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 or 1.5GHz? (If it came with Panther install disks, it couldn't be an Intel Mac mini.) Which version of Mac OS X came with your Mac mini? Some of the earlier Mac minis shipped with Mac OS X 10.3.7 and will not startup from any earlier version (most of the retail copies of Panther are 10.3.0 or 10.3.4). If it's a Mac mini that shipped later, it would have come with Mac OS X 10.4.2 and, again, won't startup from any earlier version (most retail copies of Tiger were 10.4.0 but now have 10.4.4). Trying to startup from a disk that's the wrong version will usually cause a "kernel panic" and force you to restart.
So, if your Mac mini shipped with Mac OS X 10.3.7, you should be able to use any retail copy of Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) to update your computer. However, you won't be able to update to 10.4 from the install disk that came with another Mac. You will need to buy a retail copy of your own.
There are no firmware updates available to download to upgrade the "Boot ROM" on your G4 Mac mini, so that option is really not available.

  • Upgrading Mac OSX version 10.4.11 to 10.6 issue..

    Hello all,
I have a MacBook with version 10.4.11 that I am trying to upgrade to 10.6. The upgrade instructions says to simply insert the disk and to double click on the Install Mac OSX icon, and that I should see a Welcome Pane along with a screen to accept license agreements. Unfortunately, I don't see anything of the sort. The only thing that comes up is instructions to restart the computer. And, upon restarting I do so only to be told that I cannot install Mac OSX on this system. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I can't install, all I need to know is what version of Xcode will run on version 10.4.11, I am trying to install Wine for Windows. And, I'm pretty sure Bootcamp is out of the question since I have to upgrade in order to have Bootcamp work.
This is my system spec, which seems to meet the requirements:

    Best Regards,

Your system specs look good for Snow Leopard. From this page: http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
    General requirements
    * Mac computer with an Intel processor
    * 1GB of memory
    * 5GB of available disk space
    * DVD drive for installation
You have an Intel processor, 1GB of memory, and a DVD drive. As long as you have 5GB of free space on your hard drive, you meet all the requirements. I've upgraded a family members MacBook (the very first model from May 2006) that was older then yours, and it worked fine.
On a separate note, a recommendation I would have for making your MacBook run faster would be to upgrade the RAM. It will help the system last a bit longer along with the upgrade to Snow Leopard. Apple provides instructions and specifications here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1651
If you buy online, you can upgrade to the maximum for your model (4GB) for well under $100. Doubling your memory to 2GB would cost less then $50. If it's not in your budget now, it's worth considering down the road instead of upgrading to a completely new machine.

  • ROM Version and 8 gig limit for OS X

    Hi,
My beige has a ROM version A.
I'd like to know if upgrading it to a ROM B or C will make any differences as to the limits os OS X need to be installed in the first 8 gig of disk space?
I know B and C ROM add the possibility to add multiple HD, but otherwise, I cannot say.
    Thanks

A PCI controller, such as those made by Acard, SIIG,
or Sonnet will make the computer think an IDE drive
is actually a SCSI drive and allow you to get around
    this limitation.
    Steve,
There are a couple of things to bear in mind if you're considering an ATA PCI controller card to get you around the 8GB limit that OS X imposes:
First, not all ATA PCI controller cards will trick your Beige into thinking your hard drive/s is/are SCSI. I used to have a Sonnet Tempo 100 ATA PCI card in my Rev. A Beige (which I've since replaced with an ACard AEC-6280M ATA 133 controller card) that ASP saw as an ATA card and any drives attached to it as IDE. As a consequence OS X imposed the 'less than 8GB' first partition limit for any OS X installation I did on IDE drives attached to the Tempo 100.
The second thing to bear in mind is if you're considering buying a SIIG UltraATA 133/100 Pro controller card (Part# SC-MP4A12, Model# CN2490):
Up until March 2005, SIIG used the ACard AEC-6280M card and rebranded it with their name. The rebranded ACards (Hardware Revision 1) will work fine in any Beige G3.
In March 2005 SIIG stopped using the rebranded ACards for their controller cards (I don't know if they changed suppliers or started manufacturing their own cards). The newer SIIG card, Hardware Revision 3 (there is no Revision 2 AFAIK) has the same part# and model# as the rebranded ACards but will not work at all in any Beige G3. According to SIIG their Hardware Revision 3 card requires a minimum of a G4, but I've heard that it will work in a Blue & White G3.
There is no indication on the SIIG box whether the ATA controller card inside is Hardware Revision 1 or Hardware Revision 3. The only way you can tell which revision it is is by eyeballing the card itself as the revision # is printed on the card.
Hope this is of some help…

You cannot upgrade to snow leopard. Snow leopard was the first of os x to drop support for the motorola ppc processors. The latest you could possibly run would be leopard.

  • Does the BIOS 68MSU ROM Version F.0A support Penryn?

    Hello,
I would like to know if the BIOS 68MSU ROM version F.0A (release date: Nov 05, 2008) will support the Intel Penryn processor. I know for sure this BIOS will supports Merom but does this version also supports the newer Penryn. The Service Manual is of limited used as it was released in mid 2007 which is before the release of Penryn (release date early 2008). Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I tried to install windows 7driver while in Windows 8  which it didn't like and locked in error loop, long story short I had to do factory Windows 7 restore install my needed programs then upgrade to Windows 8. I took screen shots of device manager in Windows 7 because there was unknown device that was listed in General Tab Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System that with previous install could not figure what device it was other than ACPI power management and Windows 8 took the Generic Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System driver. This time I compared to the screenshot still could figure out what was missing so I looked at the unknown device driver Details Tab and saw several references to ACPI\HPQ6001. I did a Google search and found that referenced: ACPI\HPQ6001="HP Wireless Button Driver" but the checked the HP website and there is no Windows 8 driver. My apologies if in haste about the Bios update. I can't confirm or prove it is the bios up to this point until HP completes the job because it's still half done. The bios update may as stated by HP "Provides support for the Microsoft Windows 8 wireless button controls" but without the Windows 8 drivers to work in conjunction with the bios fix the bios update is still useless and half complete because the intended problem was not fixed. I'm figured out the problem now it's left to HP to complete and I hope it does not take too long for them to create drivers to fix the problem.

the problem I have since I upgraded to Mavericks version 10.9.1
The problem appears only with Mail not with other programs, not even with my browser.
When I try to zoom the text of an e-mail I received or sent , I can no longer use the keys Command + to enlarge the text, although I can reduce it with Command -.
As I have a problem with my eyes, This is a serious matter for me.
When I write an e-mail, if I select text and press Command +, it just displaces the text to the right.
Now, my husband has a USB keyboard. If he connects it to my computer, his regular Command + does not work either, but  he uses the extended keyboard, then it works. Unfortunately, he needs it for a musical application which does not work with a wireless keyboard.

Firefox 3.6.4 and 3.6.6 use a process called, "plugin-container.exe" which was using up most of my CPU when I opened up multiple tabs that contained Adobe Flash files, and caused Firefox to lock up.
My solution was to use Firefox 3.5.10 which you can get from the Mozilla website at [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html]
I am using Adobe Flash 10.1.53.64 without any problem in this version of Firefox. Check the release notes, I believe it contains all the latest security fixes in "Firefox 3.6.4".
Hopefully, they will fix Firefox 3.6 in the next version (e.g. Firefox 3.6.7), until then you should probably use "Firefox 3.5.10".

can anyone help?Search the bugs database to see if someone else already reported this; if not create a new bug entry. Whatever mistake you could make, you should not be getting a NullPointerException as a result so this is at the very least a bug in the error handling of webstart.
But just some observations to try and see if you can make a difference (which is added input for your bug report). If I check JNLP examples, I see that the url specified is usually without a protocol, so it could be like this:
<jar href="/resources/applet/formeditor.jar" />The JNLP should be on the host that you service the jar from, so Webstart can fill in the host information for itself.
Also you provide a main-class; if the jar manifest specifies a main-class (and it should) you don't need to specify it in your JNLP file.

You can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
You can trash Firefox 4.0 then re-install Firefox 3.6, it will use your existing bookmarks, passwords etc

  • How can I go back to a previous boot ROM version?

Hi. I've been reading these forums for a long time...first time posting.
The short story: I have a Macbook 5,2 running OS X 10.5 with boot ROM MB52.0088.B06, and I'd like to know how to flash the boot ROM version back to MB52.0088.B05.
    The long story:
I have a MacBook 5,2. It came with OS X 10.5. As far as I know, the latest boot ROM for 10.5 on a Macbook 5,2 is MB52.0088.B05 (EFI 1.4) (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237).
A while ago, a friend convinced me to update to 10.6. Apparently, with the 10.6 install, it updated the boot ROM version to MB52.0088.B06. Now, I'm concerned that there is a firmware issue (which I might be wrong about, and the reason I think there is a firmware problem is very convoluted but I'll explain if you want). So I decided I wanted to go back to MB52.0088.B05. I had been thinking about going back to OS X 10.5 anyway. So, I backed up my system using Time Machine to a Time Capsule via ethernet. Then I did an Erase and Install with the original 10.5 install disc that came with my Macbook. Then, I used Migration Assistant to restore most of my system from the backup. I should have taken a look at the boot ROM version before I ran Migration Assistant...but I didnt.
The boot ROM version still says MB52.0088.B06.
I tried downloading the MB52.0088.B05 update and running it anyway, and it says my computer doesn't need the update. When I was still running 10.6, I did try the method described here: http://pubmem.wordpress.com/2011/04/09/flash-efi-firmware-update-manually-on-a-m acbook-51/ (which has apparently worked for someone else on a 5,2; see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3747472?start=0&tstart=0), and it didn't work. I don't know if it's a good idea to try it again now.
    So:
Why didn't my boot ROM go back to MB52.0088.B05 after a clean 10.5 install?
Did Migration Assistant import the previous boot ROM somehow?
Should I do another clean install without MA?
Should I try PubMem's manual method again?
Is there another way I can flack back the firmware?
    Thanks a ton!
P.S. I'm posting this in the Time Capsule community as well, since it might be an MA issue. Don't get mad, I'm new. If that's against the rules, I'll take it down.

At least you have made some progress. My inkling is the optical drive is dead.
    I think you're right.
To run the AHT you would need the AHT disc that came with the computer, but it's unlikely you have it for that old iBook G4.
I do have it, in fact! But it's not working. Here's the situation, copied from a conversation with Kenichi Watanabe over in iMacs...
I haven't been able to run the Apple Hardware Test. I have the AHT CD that came with the computer (v1.2), and I also downloaded v1.2.6 here and burned that to a CD. In both cases, when I load the CD into the external optical drive which is connected via a firewire cable (exactly what I used for the install disc), restart, and press and hold C, the computer ignores the CD completely and boots from the HD. Any idea how to fix this? Or, is there another function I can use to achieve the same thing, maybe in single user mode?
Regarding the Apple Hardware Test CD, holding down the C key will attempt to boot from the internal optical drive.  Since there is nothing in there, it boots from the internal hard drive.  I would try starting up with the Option key held down.  That should get you to the Startup Manager screen.  If that CD is in the external FireWire drive, it should be listed as a startup disk choice.  Select it and see if it will start up from it.
Right, that makes sense. Unfortunately, in both cases, when I select the CD to start up from, the screen blinks for a second and then returns to the screen where I am supposed to choose a startup disc. It does this as many times as I try to choose the CD, until I select the HD and start up from there.
When I put either CD in the drive, with the computer on and booted from the HD, the CD mounts, and Disk Utility says it's verified. But when I try to select it as a startup disc from system preferences, it doesn't show up. Ideas??
Update: I tried Hoja's reccommendation from this thread using Open Firmware, but in response to
         boot cd:\diags
    It says:
         can't OPEN: cd:\diags
    for both CDs.

  • IPod Touch not recognized since upgrading iTunes to version 11.1.4

After upgrading from iTunes version 11.1.3.64 to version 11.1.4.64, my iPod Touch will no longer be recognized in iTunes (but is recognized by my computer - can view drive). I've restarted the Apple Mobile Device Service and the iPod Service with no luck. I've also tried a system restore but the restore point was not early enough (was post iTunes upgrade). How do I revert back to the previous version of iTunes? I have Windows 8. Thanks.

    Hey BobDLT,
Thanks for the question, and great troubleshooting so far. The following article outlines some great troubleshooting steps for this issue. While you may have already attempted some of these steps, I see that there are some that have not yet been attempted. It might be a good idea to run through the entire article:
