Upgrading my Yoga 2 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro?
Anyone done this? There's no way I'm going to pay the £100 it asks for if I buy a new key on the machine, but I seem to be struggling to find a key that it likes. I've got paid-for retail Windows 8.0 Pro key that it doesn't like and also a "retail" 8.1 Pro key from my MSDN account that it doesn't like. It keeps just saying "this key won't work. check it and try again, or try a different key", which isn't too helpful. Bizarrely, with the same key, it did work once, but then got another error after it had started the upgrade. Anyone done this successfully without buying the overpriced £100 upgrade?

Wow, it seems mine did exactly the same thing! Such that:
1. It didn't accept the key at first, but this could have been a dodgy wifi signal I had at the time.
2. When it accepted it, it started the upgrade then got an error and stopped.
3. It would no longer accept the key.
4. If I went into System, it said I was still running normal 8.1
5. I manually rebooted. It said "installing new features" as it closed down and again as it booted up again.
6. It rebooted on its own one more time.
7. It now says "Windows 8.1 Pro", in System!
8. It's allowed me to install Hyper-V, which is the main thing I needed.
9. I'm happy!

Go Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer and scroll through the logs for System and Applications to see if anything shows up in red as Error or Warning.
Meanwhile, going to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers
in regedit.exe, backing up the whole ConxtentMenuHandlers folder, and then start deleting all of them one by one and continuously testing the right click. Of course import the Context folder after you find it, test once again by right clicking
to make sure you found the problem, and delete the file that caused the problem.

Yoga 3 pro installing Windows 8.1 Pro
Hi Everybody,
Currently we are looking for some alternative for heavy H... Elite solutions for our mobile workers. We were interested in Yoga 3 PRO until I noticed that it is NOT distributed with Windows 8.1 PRO. The question is whether anybody did install SUCCESFULLY a Windows 8.1 PRO on Yoga 3 PRO? What are the steps to be taken to install WIndows 8.1 PRO? Will I lose any of functionalities because of lack of drivers for Win 8.1 PRO? I'm still surprised that it is not sold with Win 8.1 PRO since on main lenovo.com you can find 'supported OS Up to Win 8.1 PRO'.

The Yoga 3 Pro IS supported and distributed with Windows 8.1 PRO. Not on lenovo.com at the moment, but available through resellers in the US. I don't know what the situation in Poland is - I suggest calling Lenovo direct.

Satellite Pro C50-A-1E6: Windows 7 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro Upgrade

My laptop came with Windows 7 Pro pre-installed and also came with the disks to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro, when I reboot the laptop to the optical drive with the Windows 8.1 Pro disk in there doesn't seem to be any options for upgrading Windows rather it is just the generic tools for recovering/backing up the laptop and installing Windows 8.1 Pro isn't mentioned anywhere.
Am I missing something? Do I need to format the laptop in order for it to pick up the Windows 8.1 set-up process?
The laptop seems to be picking up the Windows 8.1 Pro disk as the interface is similar to that of Windows 8 (when choosing region/keyboard) but as I mentioned it just defaults to repairing the existing installation with no options to upgrade.

Youve got the WIN 8.1 64BIT PRO DVD disk.
I think this is NOT a upgrade disk but using this installation disk, the system (Win 8.1) will be installed on the HDD and this procedure would get rid of Win 7
So before trying to install Win 8.1 I would recommend you to create the Toshiba Recovery medium as described in user manual. Read it!
After the Recovery medium (Disk or UBS flash stick) has been created, you could boot from the WIN 8.1 64BIT PRO DVD in order to start the installation! -

I Recently downloaded windows Pro 8.1 N from dreamspark.
They then uploaded Windows 8.1 Pro which i am unable to download:

Is there anyway to download 8.1 pro instead of 8.1 N ?Depending on the type of Dreamspark you can apply for additional download. In schools there is administrator who can add additional downloads to any individual student.
Usually there are two downloads and various version may count to single common key.
Perhaps there is an alternative (if you have no chance to get more W 8.1 downloads), namely Windows 8 Pro followed by update and upgrade to Windows 8.1.

There are many limitations when the windows is not activated, for example, personalization settings section is disabled as below:
The disabled settings include:

•Start Screen color and background
•Your account picture
You need to activate Windows before you can personalize your PC and every couple of hours, you'll see a full-screen activation request:
The application is available to use, but I suggest to run the genuine Windows and activate it, because it is legally protected.

Surface Pro 3 Windows 8.1 Pro N HID Sensor Collection
I've been tasked with creating an enterprise image on the surface pro 3. I'm using MDT 2013. I've added the driver pack to MDT for the surface pro 3.
All drivers install except for HID Sensor collection device and the simple device orientation sensor.
However, if I deploy my personal windows 8.1 pro image to the computer, it works fine. Just not with 8.1 Pro N.
In device manager it says error 10, cannot start device for the collection device. The orientation sensor is not even listed.
Any help would be appreciated. All windows updates have been applied.The two files in use by "Simple Device Orientation Sensor" in Device Manager are: c:\windows\system32\drivers\umdf\sensorservicedriver.dll

There is also a "sensor monitoring service" service running. When disabled it breaks the ambient light and rotation sensor (probably other items too). At least that is a place to start. I can try and zip these to an email account if you like to
see if it helps at all.
**THIS WAS THE KEY** I found this in Services, and it was actually running, set to 'Manual.' I stopped the service and saw my screen brightness (assuming because it disabled the ambient light sensor) come on to full. I then changed it to Automatic, and restarted
the service. After this I wishfully rotated my Y3P 90 degrees clockwise and the auto rotate did its job! I completely shut down the Y3P and booted up again... still working!
I'm curious as to why it wasn't working even when the service was running, but not going to dwell on it now that everything is peachy.
I really appreciate your time and help on an issue that diverged from the OP. I know this may break forum etiquette a bit but I was on a wild goose chase trying to find the solution. KUDOS! KUDOS FOR THIS MAN!!! -
when trying to upgrade from windows 7 SP1 to 8.1 pro from the DVD while being in windows I only get an option to keep personal files only or keep nothing.
what do I have to do so I can do a upgrade and keep all the programs too ?

Brandon DillonI think there might be a way that when you install win 8.1 on a system with existing windows it will copy the user profile to a spare partition and then format the C and the then install windows 8
If you do a rebuild on a Win 7 or Win 8 PC from a recovery partition, the software as standard now on the rebuild gives you the options of keeping your Data, even though it will wipe and reinstall everything as per factory settings.
So this is normal and to be expected.
To be honest I wouldn't even do this... I'd backup everything, install Win 8.1 from complete scratch, not keeping any data and then restore data as I needed it. I am apprehensive about it thinking it knows where all my data might be.... especially with how
some programs like to store stuff.
Of course this means everything to install again, but latest versions always good, a clean install -

I recently purchased a SnapScan Scanner that came with a full version of Acrobat XI Standard for Windows. I have a Mac, and as Adobe doesn't make a Standard for Mac, I'm wondering if it's possible to upgrade to Pro using the serial number I already have rather than purchase a whole new version. Is this doable? I attempted to use the serial number in the Pro download and it wouldn't take.

Clean installation of windows 8.1 pro on Thinkpad e550 activation problems.
I have installed a SSD hard drive and need a clean instalations of windows for development using multiple platforms.
My plan was to have a tri-boot on three partitions on a mbr formated drive.
-Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit;
-WIndows 8.1 Pro 32bit, and;
-WIndows 7 Ultimate 64bit using downgrade rights.
The following steps were used:
1. Switching the hard drive and cloning the oem copy to the first partition;
2. Activate windows getting the OEM key from the system (so I had no hardware changes);
3.Use the anytime upgrade in the system properties to upgrade to pro;
4.Clone the windows 7 OS from the old PC and place in on a partion;
5.Download both install media for windows 8.1 Pro from MS Creating Install media;
6. Create media as detailed here;
7. Modify the install to allow entry of key after install as shown here because pro license and oem keys where not acepted during install;
8.Went to BIOS. Turned on Legacy and disable secure boot;
9.Install Windows 8.1 both versions, and;
10. Repair boot to load all three OS.
Good, Now I have all three OS installed all working. However, The pro product key will not activate the windows 8.1 pro and the oem key won't be acepted saying it is the wrong version of windows.
So called MS activation line and they say i need to contact the OEM for activation and downgrade keys for 7 even though i paid for the upgrade through the MS store and the product was already activated once on the system.
Questions:
1. How can i activate the Windows 8.1 pro via Lenovo?
2. How can I activate the Windows 7 copy under downgrade rights with Windows 8.1 pro?
3. Am i missing something with the UEFI/BIOS? (Note:I need to use mbr not GPT format on the drive.)

What VC are you using?
I use VMWare Player (free) and use it to create virtual clients as needed. Typically the virtual clients are "clean installs" from ISOs. VMWare has it so well mechanized that there's not much to it.
It's pretty quick and easy to install Player and give it a try. Another advantage to that approach is that there's only a single OS at the top level and backups can capture the whole mess w/out having to deal with 2 or 3 different OSs and their partitions.
