Upgrading one of two hard drives

I've got a G5 dual 2.0Ghz with two internal hard drives: a 300Gb that's my boot drive, and a 500Gb that's a data/backup drive. The 300Gb boot drive is nearly full, so I'm planning on replacing it with a larger (750Gb) drive.
What's the best way to do this?
Should I back-up all documents from the 300Gb drive to the 500Gb drive, pull the 300Gb, replace it with the new 750 Gb drive, and install the OS, updates, and applications from scratch?
Or can I copy the entire 300Gb drive to the 500Gb drive, pull the 300Gb, then copy the entire 500Gb drive onto the new 750Gb drive...? (What would that be - a double mirror install...?)
Or is there a better way?
Thanks!

Just use SuperDuper or Disk Utility Restore to copy over and make a clone, SD does do a better job.
A WD Caviar Blue 640GB is fast and quiet making it a good boot drive and you couldn't tell the difference to 10K Raptor and just $104 - even less I hear on Newegg. The 750GB Caviar is also good.
I keep just the OS and apps on boot drive and home user account is on 2nd drive which also helps and frees up space but more important, so each drive can be accessed concurrently.

  • Trouble copying to one of two hard drives

I'm getting the "+cannot copy... file names are too long+" message, and can't determine the problem. Here are the circumstances and clues: Files were copied from an iMac G5 (10.4.11, OS Extended Journaled)to nearly new OWC Elite FW (OS Extended format) and then attempted to copy to one of 2 internal drives of the PPC G5. Got the error, even trying different ports, a FW hub, and the 800 port as well. Then tried copying to the other internal drive, designated the system drive... no problem! But now I get the error again when trying to copy them from this internal system drive to the first (data) drive. One new development just now after trying to save an open document back to this data drive from whence it came " +could not save because of a disk error.+" What do I do next? Thanks in advance.

I have two iPhoto libraries: one on the hard drive, and one on an external hard drive.  I cannot access the iPhoto library on the external hard drive.  Yes, it is plugged in!

How are you trying to access the EHD library?  Can you open it by launching iPhoto with the Option key held down and selecting the EHD library in the window that appears?

  • Two hard drives connected to Airport Extreme. How to include one of them in TimeMachine Backup and use other disc as Time Machine backup disc?

    Hi,
the title says it all. I've got an airport extreme and two hard drives connected to it. My idea was to use one as my additional storage (say DISC STORAGE) and the other one as my backup drive (say DISC BACKUP). I would like to backup my mac AND DISC STORAGE together to DISC BACKUP using time machine. My mac has 256 GB HDD, DISC STORAGE is 1 TB big, DISC BACKUP 2 TB. So there are no space issues.
Problem: DISC STORAGE is not included in Time Machine's backup to DISC BACKUP. At the moment, only the mac is backed up to DISC BACKUP.
Does anybody know if and how I can include DISC STORAGE in the backup process?
By the way, DISC STORAGE is not listed in the "exclude from backup" list in Time Machine.
    Thanks!
    Arne

Unforrtunately, Time Machine cannot backup from a network drive to another drive. Time Machine will only backup a Mac and a drive that is directly attached to the Mac, via USB or FireWire.
You will need to use an application like Carbon Copy Cloner or SupoerDuper to be able to backup from DISC BACKUP to DISC STORAGE.

  • Two Hard Drives on my computer - one totally full the other totally empty - how do I manage this - windows 8

Hi I have two hard drives on my computer running Windows 8. One is called OS (C:) and has 10.2GB free of 186GB, the other is Data (D:) and has 258GB of 258GB free.
I have just tried to update to Windows 8.1 and have had an error message saying there is not enough space on the OS drive to update as it needs 20GB.
What do I do about this? how do I get to use the 258GB of free space on the Data drive?
I'd be grateful for an answer!

    Hi,
In addition to the above information,
If your operating system is Windows 2008 and higher(Server) or Windows Vista and higher(Client).
Then you can use the native tool Disk Management to solve your requirement.
For opening Disk Management, Right click -> Computer -> Select Manage -> As result Computer Management console opens -> In the left pane under storage select Disk Management.
In the Disk Management, for extending your C: drive,
    - Since your partition layout as,  C: drive | D: drive.
    - After shrinking D: drive, the layout will be C: drive | D: drive | Unallocated space.
    - Since the unallocated space is not contiguous, when you right-click C: drive the "Extend Volume" option will be greyed out.
    - So to solve your requirement, you have to backup the data on D: drive -> Delete D: drive -> right-click on the c drive and select "Extend Volume" -> enter the size you want to add
    - Finally you can create a new D: drive from the remaining unallocated space and restore the backup data.

  • Two hard drive icons on my desktop, would like to have only one...

Hello  everyone, I recently got a PowerMac G5 (I think it's a 2.3 GHz). It came with a hard drive inserted 'Untitled', which came from my old 1.6 GHz G5. On the desktop though, I get two hard drive icons, my main start up drive called 'Untitled', and another one called 'Spare'. I was told that my G5 has only one drive inserted 'Untitled', so I'm trying to either get rid of 'Spare', or merge it somehow into 'Untitled'. Under the Volumes folder, I was not really able to get rid of it, is this something to do with Disk Utility?
BDAqua - under Get Info, when I was on Leopard, I tried changing a User Permissions category called 'Everybody' from Read Only to Read and Write. Upon restart two days later, Leopard would not start up (loads of writing on the screen, with the Mac power button, asking me to restart). To cut a long story, I am now back on Tiger lol (Leopard issues for another discussion lol), so now I dare not play with anything which says Read Only, especially when it's probably not even necessary. I am writing this from the library, so don't know what exactly it says in Get Info - User Permissions for either drive at the moment. If this is relevant, I can have a look later and post back, I'll also verify permissions in Disk Utility for both drives, but I think they are fine. Actually, when I was on Leopard, my 'Untitled' drive took ages to verify permissions, and always loads of writing appeared! Now that I'm on Tiger, the other day when I verified Disk Permissions, it was quick and fine!
    Thank you
In the screen shots, 'Untitled' is model ST31, 'Spare' is model WDC

Hi BDAqua, sorry I should have just opened it in the first place! I don't know why that man told me there was only one hard drive inside, perhaps a misunderstanding.
It seems that there are actually two hard drives inside, one in A, and one in B (see photo)! So, if this is the case, I don't have a problem with the two hard drive icons.
I guess if a G5 shows two hard drives on the desktop, then there's two hard drives in the machine!
    Thanks for helping anyway.

  • How to get two hard drives to be seen on MBP desktop. I need to be able to see 2 hds both 3 tb to transfer data between them. This is easy in windows just open two instances, one for eac hard drive. TIA robbo

am trying to back up and transfer data between two hard drives but cant get up twp Hd icons at the same time. It is so easy in windows but cant seem to do it in MBPro. Even Dick Smith couldnt help me today.
It is probaly so easy it everyone will LOL but I cant get it happening.
    TIA Robbo

Do the HD icons appear on your Desktop?
If not, adjust your Finder preferences:
Also check "Hard Disks" if you want your internal HD to appear on the Desktop.
Open one, open the other, should be no problem.

  • I need to replace one of my hard drives for Power Mac G5

Hi guys, I've been having some trouble turning on my computer. I found out that one of my hard drives (I have two) have been damaged. The damaged hard drive is 250 gigs. Its a MAXTOR hard drive and on the top right corner it says "DiamondMax 10" Then right below that... "250GB SATA150 HDD".
My second hard drive is fine, it has 150 gigs on it. However I am not able to start up my computer with that hard drive. Anyways, my real question is (or two questions)...
    1) Is it possible to "upgrade" and get a hard drive that has more memory (such as 1tb) or would I need the same model to replace the bad hard drive?
    2) Where can I find a replacement? Please list some sites or retailers.
    Thanks guys

You can move up to 2TB if you want to, as those are getting pretty reasonable at this point. I have had a few Seagate 1TBs in backup service for a while (SATA300 versions) and have recently moved all to 2TB Hitachis because the 2TB Seagates were not 7,200 RPM. The Hitachis have been so far a breeze, but I only have a couple of months on them at this point.
Concur with BD about the "avoid green" thoughts. The SATA300 drives I obtained have all been "plug and play" with no jumpers needed, so that's another plus.
    2) Where can I find a replacement? Please list some sites or retailers.
All over the place. As to retailers, out here, Best Buy and Fry's have been good, but I don't know what you have in your neighborhood. Online are all sorts of vendors and perhaps even a little more price competition, but you should not be surprised by the price variance on the same items from different sites. One thing you can do is zero in on a candidate drive and then Google the part number for wider coverage.
BTW, are you talking hardware damage or directory damage?

  • What is the maximum hard drive height for installing two hard drives in the 2011 Mac Mini

In a few months I'll be buying a Mac Mini. I want to upgrade the stock hard drive with a Seagate Momentus XT Solid state Hybrid Drive(720 RPM), which is 9.5 mm tall.
I would like to add a second hard drive, a Seagate Constellation(7200 RPM), which has a "15mm z-height".
I want to use those hard drives so I can have a speedy Mac Mini, but also have a great amount of storage(1.75 terabytes). My largest priority is storage space, but I also would like to use 7200 RPM hard drives as speed is also a priority.
I would like to know if those two hard drives would both fit in the 2011 Mac Mini.
And also, what does "Z-height" mean in regards to hard drives?

9.5mm is the standard 2.5" drive height. This thread says one 15mm drive may fit, but recommends against a Seagate Constellation drive, due to the amount of power it draws.
One option would be to add an external mini-stack, then storage space becomes a secondary concern. If you want speed, install an SSD for the operating system then put everything else on secondary storage.

  • How can I split a backup on two hard drives with Time Machine ?

Back-up of my Imac with time machine is 1,3 TB. I have two 1 TB external hard drives but even if I had both as available in Time machine, it seems it doesn't allow to split the backup between the two hard drives. Any way to resolve this without buying another hard drive with more space?
    Thanks in advance

You cannot directly split a backup. Your only option would be to open the TimeMachine preferences from System Prefs. and add things to the exclusion list for one of the backups. Then, when you go to do the other backup you would reverse the process and add everything else to the exclusion list and remove the things you had on there in the first place.
Seems fairly intensive though when you could just go and buy a 2 or 3TB external drive and do it all in one...Black Friday is coming up

Well, yes, data does get corrupted sometimes.
The trick is finding what data.
By 'cleaned' are you therefor meaning that the drive has been erased and the system re-installed?
Because that's the quickest way to deal with such a situation.
Back up the system first of course,
Add back 3rd party apps one at a time in case one of them is causing the problem.

  • I have two hard drives on my mac 10.5.8 power pc and hear the clickking sounds of the first hard drive and think that it may be dying, can I install everything on the other hard drive also and wait for the first drvie to die before i use the other drives

I have two hard drives on my mac 10.5.8 power pc and hear the clickking sounds of the first hard drive and think that it may be dying, can I install everything on the other hard drive also and wait for the first drive to die before i use the other drives? Or, what is the best way to handle this?

I do not know what you are waiting for.
I'd make a backup of your important stuff before cloning the entire disk.
Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external  firewire drive.  You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

SuperDuper is the wildly acclaimed program that makes recovery painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless. Its incredibly clear, friendly interface is understandable, easy to use, and SuperDuper's built-in scheduler makes it trivial to back up automatically. And it runs beautifully on both Intel and Power PC Macs!

  • Two hard drives

I have two hard drives. One is meant to be a backup drive. The problem is that my catalogue is getting half the pictures from one drive and half from the other. How can I make it get all files from one drive? I am using LR4.

Move the files from the backup disk to the main disk. I recommend doing this using the OS Move command or dragging and ropping rather than Lr as it has a habit of loosing the files if the application happens to crash during the move. Also, the OS will leave a copy of the original on the backup until you manually delete it. After moving the files (really a copy) you can use the method described in following tutorial to relink to them in Lightroom http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm (see section titled 'Updating Folder Location'.

  • Backing up two hard drives

I was using Time Machine to back up the hard drive on my desk top and to back up an external hard drive that contains all of my video work. I erased the hard drive containing the backups and excluded all other hard drives except for the hard drive on the desk top (Hard Drive A) and the one with my video stuffs (Hard Drive B). Before, A & B would show up on the external containing the backups. But now, it looks like only A is showing up. I did a rough calculation and it looks like the initial backup included both hard drives. Why aren't the two hard drives showing up separately?

They should, but it depends on how you get into TM and whether you can navigate once you're there.

  • Consolidating two hard drives without duplicating songs?

I have two hard drives full of music. Each drive has about 300GB of music each. 90 percent of the music on each drive is the same(copied from one drive to the other over time). However, about 10 percent of the music is different on both drives. If I consolidate the music of both drives is it going to create a 600GB music library or does it recognize similar songs and not copy duplicate songs?
    Thank you for your help

Open Disk Utility, which is located in Applications/Utilities/ folder.
Look at the sidebar. You should see the connected storage devices. The devices (or drives) are listed flush against the left edge of the sidebar. Indented to the right, below each device, you should see the volumes on that device. Normally, there should be one volume under a device.
Describe what you see? Where is the "(2)"? Is it under a device by itself, or is it with another volume under a device.
