Upgrading open boot on ultra 2

Hello everyone
*I know this is not Solaris 10/software related but I am at a lost where to ask for help with this.
I have a ultra 2, dual CPU (300's) system and it has an older openboot. (I don't have the exact revision number with me but can have it later) and I would like to upgrade it but have no clue where to go for help and to get the file itself. and how to do it.
thanks for the help.
Luc

I think the current version I have right now is 3.25
is this the latest one?
I found this..
http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-21-104169-08-1&searchclause=Ultra%202
but its version 3.25
is there a newer one?
thanks

• Can't open boot device??? On sparc 7

Hi
I'm new to Solaris, please be patient.
I got a ultra 1 machine and tried to upgrade the hard drive. I installed an IBM 4.55 GB sca drive. When I boot this message comes up.
Boot device /sbus/espdma/csp/sd@0,0:a File and args: -F cprbooter cprboot
Bad magic number in disk label
Can't open disk label package
Can't open boot device
I did probe-scsi command it says
Unit 0 Disk TANDEM 4512-2 2626
Any help would be great. Is the hard drive not compatible with solaris? I tried a couple of other drives same result. Thanks in advance

You're trying to remove an old/small hard disc and you try to
install the new 4.5GB drive instead, is that right?
The boot-file property in the openboot prom is set to "...cprboot" because the system was suspended
(and not shutdown), before you've removed the hard disc. On power-up, the
system wants to resume from suspend state with the information saved
on the hard disc and tries to do that using the "cprboot" boot
program. (obviously this cannot work because the disc with the suspend
state data is gone). You can probably get rid of this error by
using the open boot prom commands printenv/setenv to check/correct
the boot-file property.
The other problem is the "Bad magic number in disk label" error
message, but this is just a hint that the new disc contains no
valid disk label, so you cannot boot from the new disc, yet.
This is to be expected - because the disc contains no valid data.
I'd say that you should just place you solaris installation cd into
the cdrom drive and try a 'boot cdrom' at the open boot prompt and
install a fresh copy of solaris on the new drive. Then restore
your user files from a backup (or whatever) on the new drive.

• Console Mode with third-party PCI card w/ open firmware bios,Open Boot Info

PPC macs used open firmware to boot, and their videocards contained forth code in their rom. There are even custom roms for PC video cards which contain code for the PPC mac open firmware.
Could such a card be initialized as the primary display device on an Ultra 5?
I'm betting I'm going to be answered with 'use a sun branded card'. I can't imagine the rom on these cards is so much different than that used on the PPC mac?
What exactly does Open Boot do to find a videocard? Are there any documents on this? I assume it finds some forth routine in the cards rom and runs that to initialize it and identify it's capabilities? Again, I would really appreciate some direction on where to look for docs.
I'm confused on the difference between openfirmware (apparently a spec), and open boot (sun's implementation? Are all implementations compatible with eachother?)
http://www.openbios.org/Welcome_to_OpenBIOS
"Open Firmware is found on many servers and workstations and there are several commercial implementations from SUN, Firmworks, CodeGen, Apple, IBM and others."
Additionaly, what is the sun4u architecture? sun4v architecture? Which workstations are which? System handbook doesn't seem to say under 'hardware specs'.
So, if all else fails and using a card with an openfirmware rom doesn't help me, how do I go about doing this myself?
I know how to work VGA console mode via the stardard vga registers, Is there a way to get open boot to do exactly what I tell it in terms of registers and addresses?
Can I get an uncompiled form of my Open Boot Prom for my Ultra 5?
All I'm really looking for is good docs/source on how Open Boot/ Open Firmware work, specificly conerning PCI video devices.
Thanks for any tips.

I haven't looked at anything beyond the OpenBoot level.
I've been neglecting this project for some time.
I just wanted to let anyone else in my situation know that the sun OpenBoot documentation was very helpfull in my sucessfully setting a mode with the card.
I don't know how the OS and later OpenWidows interact with the card, or with the information OpenBoot has about it, and it's current mode.
I hadn't really looked at any of that yet. Though this information will probably show up as soon as I bother to look for it, it'd be nice if some one recommends a specific doc, or has a short answer about the topic.
There happens to be an open source driver for my card, for XFree86 and Xorg, however, I've had enough of a challenge merely using OpenWindows.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/XFree86.conf
Where are simmilar files for OpenWindows? Again, it's probably in some docs I haven't bothered to read yet.
Sparcy: Weird that the card has Fcode and OpenBoot doesn't add it's package to the device tree. I assume it treats it like a non Fcode PCI card? Does it recognize the contents of the PCI base address registers? Try proding it's PCI registers and see if they behave as expected.
If the card is actually working and you can read the expansion rom I don't see why the Fcode didn't work. Maybe it has a later incompatible Fcode revision? Open boot 4.x 5.x? sun4u as opposed to something else? Or maybe the Fcode was designed to lock the card to a certain type of system (I doubt that).
http://www.sunshack.org/data/bootroms.html
Newer versions of openboot, and new hardware series listed at that link. Where's a more complete list?
Oh well, I guess I should bother to read up on this more thoroughly and finish the job.
Let me know if you find out what the problem was, or if you try that MAC card. Thanks.

• Upgrading to Boot Camp 5.0 from 4.1: Would it require a re-install of Windows (Win7 SP1)?

I have a Late 2012 Mac Mini (OS X 10.8.3) with Boot Camp 4.1 and Windows 7 SP1 installed. I mainly work on Win7 and would like to continue doing so. My question is: Would upgrading to Boot Camp 5.0 require me to re-install my Win7 or does it work like a simple update? I certainly do not want to waste any time having to re-install my copy of Windows and all my content as it is working fine, but would like to install the latest Boot Camp drivers if it is no problem doing so.

Thanks mate, update to Boot Camp 5.0 done! Had a issue at first which didn't let me run the update, but this was resolved by downloading (from Apple's support website) and re-installing my (now previous) BC4.1 drivers again. Think it has something to do with the previous BootCamp.msi file that allows the BC4.1 drivers to be uninstalled first before updating to BC5.0. Got that tip from a diffrent question thread on the support website. Anyway, thereafter running the BC5.0 update was no problem. Takes a little while for everything to get fully updated on the next restart, but all good. Cheers.

• TS1722 Have lost ability to open Boot Camp on start up or restart. Only Mac icon shows up. Worked perfectly for two years and now it implodes. Any hope of re-opening Boot Camp?of recapturing data in

Have lost ability to open Boot Camp on start or restart. Icon does not show up. Had been working for 2 years, then nothing. Recently had problems with Kodak Easy Share in PC partition. Any connection? Any hope of reopening Boogt Camp without losing data already there?

Can you see there is a partition?
Can you boot Windows 7 DVD?
Did you think you would never need a backup image?
So no Safe Boot, no F8, possible?
Paragon CampTune
Paragon CampTune is a commercial product that is designed expressly for this task. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/camptune/ It consists of a downloadable ISO that needs to be burned to a disc and booted from in order to resize the partitions. During testing it was available free, but now costs US$19.95. MR user Rodus reports that it damaged their OS X partiton and a reinstall was required, so heed the warning and have a backup.
Paragon Partition Manager
From the makes of CampTune is a commercial tool that is similar in functionality to GParted Live, but has a more polished/friendly user interface than GParted Live. Previously only the US$79.95 Professional version supported all the features required for this, but as of version 11 the US$39.95 Personal version has also been reported to work. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-personal/
Securing Dual-System Configuration
Imaging is still the most affordable and robust way to secure computer data. Unfortunately Mac OS X backs up only HFS+ volumes, leaving Windows with dual-system configurations unsecured. You can permanently lose all of your data unless you have a Windows-compatible backup solution.
Paragon’s CampTune and Paragon’s Drive Copy for Mac can secure the entire dual-system configuration. CampTune creates traditional images of volumes or entire hard disks, Drive Copy can copy them to other disks. In case of an emergency, you can restore the previously created image or copy all your data back to its original state.
Winclone/Disk Utility
Winclone is a free tool for creating and restoring backup images of your Windows partition. One of its key features is that it can restore to a larger partition than the one the image was created from.
NOTE: Winclone has been discontinued, but for now remains available and capable of completing these tasks (including creating and restoring Windows 7 images).
Winclone updated to support Lion Winclone updates and download
Disk Utility can resize HFS+ (Mac OS) partitions, but is currently incapable of resizing NTFS partitions, so you could use it to reduce the size of the HFS+ partition and create a new larger placeholder MS-DOS (FAT) partition
The full process would be:
Backup Windows partition with Winclone.
(if the new Windows partition is smaller than the old one make sure you set the preferences in Winclone to save the image as an uncompressed dmg)
Delete old Windows partition
Resize current Mac Partition
Create new Windows partition as MS-DOS (FAT) in free space after Mac OS partition.
(If the new Windows partition is smaller than the old one an additional step is required: shrink the filesystem on the image by selecting Tools->Shrink Windows (NTFS) Filesystem)
Reboot your computer for the new Windows partition to mount properly (winclone may not restore if you don't reboot)
Restore Winclone partition over new Windows partition
An alternate Winclone based process is described in the External Guides section

• "Can't open boot device" mesage when installing Solaris 10 by cdrom

I am getting the following error message when I try to install Solaris 10 from cdrom:
"Can't open boot device."
The system I am trying to install to is a SunFire v100.
The boot command I am using is:
ok boot cdrom - nowin
I have used this cd to successfully install several other v100s without any trouble. I have tried another cd and get the same behavior. I have also tried installing another v100 and get the same error.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Please check the "cdrom" alias.

• Open Boot Firmware - nvalias backup_root - Command Behavior

My configuration is, a Sun Fire 280R running Solaris 9
with two duplicate hard drives, setup as a software RAID1
mirror.
I have also done the open boot command:
OK
nvalias backup_root /sbus@1,f8000000/esp@1,200000/sd@3,0:a
(telling open boot that the backup root device is the second phyical hard drive in the mirror)
And then:
OK printenv boot-device
boot-device = disk net
OK setenv boot-device disk backup-root net
boot-device = disk backup-root net
OK nvstore
I know the above commands sets the open boot firmware
to boot from the second drive in the mirror rather then the mirror drive itself if the mirror should fail.
Yet, I am unsure if this will just boot into open boot firmware's single user mode, or if it will edit the vfstab and boot multi user using the second physical drive for all references of slices in the vfstab.
When I first setup the drive mirror (RAID 1) I used the command: metaroot to edit vfstab, to reference the mirror device rather then physical drive and slices.
For example: metaroot d54
This changed the vfstab to point to the d54 mirrored
device rather then either of two physical drives.
So, my question is:
Does setting the open boot nvalias command change the vfstab in the multi user boot environment as the metaroot command did , or does it just let open firmware boot to a single user mode, then letting you use open boot firmware to manually change the vfstab to reflect the the
surviving drive of the mirror.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I power on and am immediately in Open Firmware (it says Welcome to Open Firmware) black text on white with > prompt. It suggests "mac-boot" or "shut-down." the latters shuts it down; choosing boot changes the screen to grey with the alternating Question ?/Finder Man folders. Then, at least for the next 10 minutes, nothing happens (haven't waited longer than that). Doesn't boot into Target Disk Mode. When you try to boot from disk, it goes to Open Firmware; if you choose mac-boot again holding C, it foes to a Folder Finder Man on it and doesn't blink--which means it found a system and is booting--except nothing else happens (at least for the few minutes I have waited in the past. Am I just impatient?). I removed the hard drive and tested it in an enclosure--it's fine with an intact installation of OS X and replaced the case screws and it immediately booted into OS X. I updated the system , but upon restart it went straight back to Open Firmware. I think I need to designate a Start up disk. How do you do that from Open Firmware. Or in UNIX for that matter? Can I get to Unix from Open Firmware (I have X11 installed on all my machines)? As I am typing this, the PowerBook spontaneously began to boot into OS X but when it got to the point where the boot screen changes to the blue system, it restarted and went to Open Firmware.

• Getting an error 'Cannot open Boot device' while trying to install Solaris

Hi,
We were trying to install Solaris * on a Sun Sparc system and the CD rom drive does not seem to get recognised. When we try booting from cd rom we get an error 'Cannot open boot device' .
This server was up & running and we were trying to remove a hard disk that had failed and modified the vfstab script . After that the system failed to even boot up. So when we tried reinstalling the OS we are running into this problem.
Am new to this technology ...And any help would be greatly appreciated. .....
Thanks

Cdrom drive must be scsi device 6
I assume you are running < boot cdrom> at the ok prompt
also at the ok prompt run the command <probe-scsi> (without the angled brackets) you need to see the following:
Target 6
Unit 0 Removable read only device TOSHIBA XM.......bigpileofnumbers
If not, check the cdrom drive and the cdrom inside
hope this helps

• Open Boot PROM (OBP) source ?

I have seen requests for Open Boot PROM (OBP) source code for
OpenSPARC T1. The OBP binary is already published for OpenSPARC T1
with SAM and Legion simulators.
If the OBP source is made available, what is the potential use of
this source code: Is it needed for reference only or
for use with simulator or with the real hardware ? Anybody planning
to change OBP or add new I/O devices in OBP ?
If you are planning to do OpenSPARC T1 based FPGA or silicon implementation,
would you use OBP or create your own BIOS like firmware ? Anybody working
on BIOS for OpenSPARC T1 ?
Any ideas or comments are welcome.

I would love to have the OpenBoot code. Up to now, I am using PROLL (http://people.redhat.com/zaitcev/linux/). PROLL is a sun4m OpenBoot.
The problem with PROLL is that only old hardware is supported (sun4m), and basic
things like a forth emulator are not included.
If I get the sourcecode for the OPB, I would use for the following projects:
-QEMU (http://fabrice.bellard.free.fr/qemu/) sun4u (maybe sun4v) support. QEMU works
with sun4m (PROLL), but it still does not work with sun4u because of lack of OBP.
-SCOORE. At UCSC, the MASC (http://masc.soe.ucsc.edu) research group is
developing a new SPARC processor. We target FPGA boards (altera). To boot the
CPU we can use a small dummy code like in the Leon3 (www.gaisler.com) processor
or we can use an OPB. We would prefer the OPB much more. Otherwise, we need to "twick" the Linux kernel.

• I just downloaded bootcamp 3.1 to upgrade from 3.0. I am using Snow Leopard. is there anything special I have to do run the upgrade version when I open Boot Camp Assistant?? Thank you

Hi everyone
I am running Snow Leopard on my early 2006 MBP. I just downloaded Boot Camp 3.1 so I can upgrade 3.0. Is there anything special I need to do to "install" 3.1 so that when I run Boot Camp Assistant it uses 3.1 instead of 3.0? Thank You.

The Boot Camp 3.1 drivers you downloaded have to be installed in Windows after running Boot Camp Assistant. That update does not apply to Boot Camp Assistant, and as you are using Mac OS X 10.6.8, you are using the most recent Boot Camp Assistant version for Snow Leopard.
Once you have installed Windows with Boot Camp, insert the Snow Leopard DVD in Windows and install the Boot Camp 3.0 drivers. Then, install the Boot Camp 3.1 drivers

• After pacman -Syu upgrade xfce boots black screen cursor

Hello,
I've recently upgraded the system with pacman -Syu and it seem something has gone wrong with new xfce 4.12. I have changed DM from slim to lxdm and can only boot to openbox but not xfce. I also switch to tty2 and try a startx with ~/.xinitrc file with exec startxfce4 but it does not launch properly. What I mean is both the display manager and a startx boots me into a black screen with a cursor when i try to launch xfce. Again I can boot to openbox just fine. I've searched for similar topics but cant seem to find any solution. Can anyone help?

Ok i get that. Here is xorg log and journalctl -b log. I rebooted tried to login through lxdm and got the cursor and blank screen. I then tty3 and startx and launched into openbox to post these results. Still cannot get into xfce as normal user. Thoughts???

• How to install Windows 7 on MacBook with Tiger + Leopard upgrade using Boot Camp

Hi,
I've had Vista installed on a separate partition on my MacBook for a while, but wanted to upgrade to Windows 7. I've completely wiped the HDD, re-installed Tiger, upgraded to Leopard and installed Windows 7 using boot camp from within OSX. However, I now can't boot back into OSX - I believe it's because I don't have the latest version of Boot Camp within Windows 7 (it doesn't appear on the task bar), but I also don't have a full copy of Leopard, only the upgrade disk.
Is there any way to (a) boot back into OSX (I've tried holding down the option key and this doesn't work) and (b) installing a version of Boot Camp that will enable me to switch between both operating systems as I was when Vista was installed & without having to purchase the full copy of Leopard?
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Elliot.

Try to boot from the 10.4 disk then and "Repair Disk". If you can, then try booting from the 10.5 disk and do the same.
Have you tried holding down the C key also when trying to boot from the Install disks? It could take 30 seconds to a minute or more for the C key/Option key reboots. The Mac DVD HAS to be the OS installer disk not the applications installer, etc,. Sorry if I keep bringing this up.
You have to keep holding it down the whole time it boots, either it will bypass it and reboot into Windows or it should get to the boot loader window with at least Windows showing up.
If you can still boot into Windows with no problems then Windows SHOULD show up in the boot loader window. (C key/Option key) It's hardware related, it's the computers manual way of looking for a bootable OS if there's no OS installed yet.
Don't forget to disconnect any USB devices until you get it fixed.
Also try to boot from the Windows installer disk and "Repair Windows" and see what happens.
Other then your DVD drive may be on it's last legs, I can't really think of any reason you can't boot from the Mac DVD's. All the other post's I searched for eventually got the DVD boot working, even 10.6 and 10.7 are having that issue, tho rarely.

Don't run the installer this time, if a window pops up to "Run" or "Open", just open it. If it doesn't open the DVD and look for the BootCamp.exe. Right click on the .exe (or whatever it's called) and select the trouble shoot compatibility mode and select Vista. Yes, I know you have W7. See if that works.
It may have buggered the Mac OS side so you may have to get DiskWarrior (worked for some) or the like in order to fix it. It would definitely be useful in the future.

• Installing Windows 7 "Upgrade" using Boot Camp 4?

I've run myself into a bit of a dilemma and I'm hoping there is a work around... I have a MacBook Pro that came with Lion and Boot Camp 4. I understand Boot Camp 4 does not support running anything earlier than Windows 7. After going through the whole process and installing the full version of 7 on Boot Camp I realized when I got to the part where Windows wanted a license key that my license is only for an "upgrade" and therefore said it wasn't valid. I have Windows Vista that I can upgrade from, but I apparently can't install Vista with Boot Camp 4, and I've read I cannot downgrade to BC3. I'm trying to avoid buying a new license key for a full version of 7. Does anyone know if there is a way to make this work? I hope I have explained it properly... pretty much a catch 22!

OK, here's what you do. I'm assuming that you've got the partition laid out and your drivers ready:
Insert your Win 7 Upgrade DVD and hold down the C key while restarting the Mac This boots Setup
Run through Setup once, formatting your Boot Camp volume. For this go-around, use a Custom install
You will get to a point where you are asked for your Product Key. Skip this request now!
Install the Boot Camp software
Next, go back to your Win 7 Upgrade DVD and allow the AutoRun. Click Install Now on the window that opens.
You're in Setup again. This time, do an Upgrade. You should be back at your Desktop when this runs through. If asked for the key again, skip it.
Click Start > Computer
Now click System properties
At the bottom of the System Properties window is a link, Change product key. Click this link.
Enter the Upgrade key now while you walk through activation. It should be accepted this time.
We've just tricked Windows into thinking it was upgraded, thereby fulfilling the license requirement. This method works because the installer makes no check as to what specific versions of Vista or 7 the upgrade will qualify on. In this way, it is possible to "clean install" an upgrade copy for about $100 less than a full copy.
