Upgrading OS 10.2.8 to 10.4 in a Mirrored Drive Door PowerMac G4

Hello,
I'm trying to upgrade the OS from 10.28. to 1.4 in my Mirrored Drive Door Power Mac G4. All the system requirements are met, the firmware is current, and there should be no problem, but I get a message saying "The system can't be installed in this machine" ... any idea of what may be going on?
I upgraded the system in a external drive without any problem from a PoweBook G4, so the installer seems to be OK ...
Thanks!
B

If you have a "full retail" 10.4.0 disc (black with Silver-White 'X') it should install in a Mirrored Drive Doors G4 without issue. A 10.4.7 disc may not install on G3 systems. The Mirrored Drive Doors G4 has certain unique Hardware not found in earlier Macs such as the PowerBook G4.
A gray or orange disc for a different Mac will not contain all you need, and will probably not install. A G5 disc contains special version for the G5 only.
An "Upgrade" disc requires the previous system installed and mostly functional, and just adds the changes.

  • PowerMac G4 "Mirrored Drive Doors" 2x1GHz Hard Drive Upgrade

I have a PowerMac G4 "Mirrored Drive Doors" 2x1GHz with one 75 GB PATA hard drive.
I want to install two 500 GB PATA drives.
    1) How is this done while transferring all the data from the 75 GB drive to the new drives?
    2) Is a master/slave configuration the only option for two PATA drives?
    Regards,
    David

I prefer not to cut pin 28 wire so I’ll go with the master/slave (device 0/device1) configuration.
I do not know to what you refer. I have two 300 gig drives in my MDD, connected without modification to the cable (to which the original 80 gig was connected). The drive jumpers are set as cable select. Repeat - no modification of the cable was ever done. In fact, but this is from memory, I believe I could not boot from drives that were jumpered as "master" / "slave".
Can anyone confirm the number of PATA drives that will fit in a MDD?
As shipped, the MDD is wired for up to four hard drives. There are two cables and each will let you connect two drives. One of the buses is slower than the other - the faster one is where the original drive is located.
Are the bays under the CD/DVD drive set-up for SCSI drives?
No. You need a scsi card to use scsi drives.

  • I have a big problem with Lion and PGP. After upgrading from snow leopard to lion I cannot access my PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start but gives a notion that lion cannot work with my PGP version. Solution?

After upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion I cannot access a PGP drive which was generated under snow leopard. PGP does not start. When I try to start I just receive a message that Lion cannot work with PGP. How can I now access important and confifential informatio which I have stored in PGP (snow leopard). Do I have to move back to snow leopard. If so, how can I do this?

    If you have this product,
    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH165159
you have to go back to Snow Leopard.
To re-install SL, back up your home directory, format and re-install.

Also, I have the 08 version of iWork. Will this cause problems for the update?  Can I update this AFTER I update the processor?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There's no reason to think that Mountain Lion will slow down your Mac. Just make a backup of your data before upgrading with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
Also, check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com Upgrade them to a compatible version or delete them before upgrading.
The external drive won't make the OS X Mountain Lion installer fail, but it's better to unplug it during the upgrade.
iWork '08 is compatible with Mountain Lion. iWork '09 includes OS X Mountain Lion features and can be purchased at the Mac App Store.
To upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion, I recommend at least 4 GB of RAM. You can check how much memory you have in Apple menu > About this Mac

  • HT201343 if I upgrade to mountain lion X will I be able to mirror HBO to go on my mac air?

If I upgrade to mountain lion X, will I be able to mirror HBO to go on my mac air?

Mirroring has some system requirements more restrictive than the requirements for Mountain Lion. See the following footnote from the Mountain Lion features page:
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer).
Edit: you can mirror to your TV via wire without upgrading, if your machine does not support AirPlay Mirroring.

  • Do I need startup discs to upgrade hardware on MacBook Pro or can I restore the hard drive from from a Time Machine backup?

do I need startup discs to upgrade hardware on MacBook Pro or can I restore the hard drive from from a Time Machine backup?

Ok, well go and grab a small 2.5" hard drive enclosure so you can put the new drive in & temporarily use it like an external hard drive.
Download Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper and make a bootable clone of your current HDD on the new HDD.
Once that's done you can test the clone by booting from it. To do this hold Optioni while booting to select the external (new) drive. If everything looks ok, you can go ahead and swap over the HDD's.
    So much easier.

  • ProBook 4520s hangs during upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 due to Ralink RT3090 driver

While upgrading my ProBook 4520s from Windows 7 pro 64 to Windows 10 pro 64 the laptop froze. It appears that it was caused by the Ralink RT3090 wifi chip driver that comes with Windows 10. I have replaced it with another driver and the upgrade worked fine. The procedure I followed was as follows: - Disable the wifi/bluetooth combo in the BIOS settings. - Goto control panel - Windows upgrade and start the listed Windows 10 upgrade- After Windows 10 has been installed, download the Ralink RT3090 driver from: http://mediatek.com/en/downloads1/downloads/pcimpcicbrt2860rt2760rt2890/ fill in a name, email address and the captcha to start the download of the driver package. Note that Mediatek bought Ralink a few years ago so this site is from the manufacturer or the Ralink RT3090 wifi chip used in the laptop. - Unpack the driver package in a folder.- Select Windows key + R, enter msconfig and run it- Select to start Windows 10 in safe mode after the next boot - Select to reboot the PC- When the PC restarts but before Windows 10 starts up, enter the BIOS settings by pressing escape- Enable the wifi/bluetooth combo in the BIOS settings- Save the BIOS settings and exit- Windows will start in safe mode- Install the new driver by running setup.exe in the folder where the driver package was unpacked- Select Windows key + R and enter msconfig and configure to start Windows normally after the next boot- Reboot It appears that the ProBook 4520s can also come with other wifi chips than the Ralink 3090, so this fix might not be suitable for all versions of the ProBook 4520s.

    Thanks for the advice!

Instead, you could restart holding the Command and R keys, which will start up on the Recovery partition Lion creates, and then restore the operting system on the main partition.
Before doing anything like erasing the startup drivek maie sure you have an external drive with a backup copy incase things go badly.

  • Need to upgrade from 10.1.5 to tiger, don't have dvd drive

I only have a cd drive in my old imac. Would like to upgrade to Tiger and add an airport card. Do I need to buy the full version or just an upgrade cd? Is it possible to put an airport card in this imac? Should I add more memory too? I hear it is pretty easy to add memory, but what about the airport card? It has the original operating system that came with the computer and it has never been upgraded. This computer is the white pod style. Thanks!

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Which exact iMac is it & RAM, HD, etc.?
No upgrade disks unless you can find the right Machine specific one on eBay or such, even the Black Retail version is hard to come by, then you'd need a DVD drive or another PPC Mac around to use Target Mode.
Better than an expensive/slow Airport card if you can even find them, Yes, it can be done, but you might consider one of these with a USB extension cable...

A USB cable will give you much better placement options, and they have better range/speed than Airport cards by far.

  • Upgrading my intel iMac to internal SSD and running 1TB external drive from firewire 800 for mass storage while still using a second external drive for backups...my goal-speed with a SSD, to still have 1TB of room for everything i have now..possible?

I seem to kill HD's every two years...the last two i've installed were WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200rpm 3.5" drives. The speed gains over  stock drives have been remarkable. I don't blame the drives for the failures, my machines are up and running 16 hours a day, every day, year round. They die from 'mileage' so to speak...i assume...there's no viral acvtivity or questionable downloads to gunk things up...just lots of work.
I have my third new drive ready to install in my intel based iMac...but i've had a thought...I want to install a SSD in my iMac for the speed gain (and recent price drops)...for standard storage i want to use this new WD Caviar Black 1TB in an external drive bay and connect via firewire 800 for storing everything except the OS and my most commonly used software...am i crazy? will the firewire 800 external drive negate the speed gained with an internal SSD??
I have four iMacs in my office, and one at home. I buy second hand and install new drives and boost memory. I'm going to do this on my 'home' machine...if it works out well i want to upgrade the other three this way...but first i need to know if i'm just dreaming, or will it really make a difference? or even possible??
    Thanks!

The SSD gives great bootup and Application launch speed. I think it also speeds up the video rendering a bit, I do all that on the SSD and then move the finished project to the external drives. As far as the speed for the external drives they are quick enough for viewing video and the file transfer rate is good. I had initially put the SSD into an external cradle (FW800) and the system was faster than on the internal drive. I only got a 1.5GBs SATA drive, perhaps yours could benefit from the 3GBs. I know the 6GBs would be too fast and costs a lot more, even the MacPros need special hookups to make use of the 6GBs.

  • Since upgrading to Lion I can no longer mount my external hard drive

I backed up about 10 minutes before installing Lion when I was on Snow Leopard. I know my drive works fine and there are no issues with it.
However, when Lion was installed, I wanted to perform a Time Machine Backup, but it said my backup disk was unavailable. I checked in the Finder and it wasn't showing up in the side bar, even though it was connected to my Mac and the indicator light on the hard drive itself was flashing - suggesting drive activity. I can also hear the drive spinning.
I opened Disk Utility and the external hard drive appears in the side bar and it says 'WD My Passport 071A Media'. Underneath that is the 'Time Machine Backups' drive which is greyed out. I have tried right clicking on it and choosing Mount but it won't mount, and I have also tried Repair Disk which doesn't finish, but also doesn't report any errors either. If I run Verify Disk and Repair Disk on the 'WD My Passport 071A Media' drive (which is the same drive) it does not report any problems and says the drive is working fine.
I have tried updating the drive's firmware and using different ports but neither have worked. I have also tried rebooting my Mac.
I really need to use this drive to backup and I can't format it because I can't afford to lose any data on there. Could someone please give me some advice or tell me how to fix this? I would appreciate it so much.
    Thanks,
    Nathan

    If you want.
or maybe install Snow Leopard using the disc it came on with my Mac and just set it up from a Time Machine Backup on my external hard drive (since it works under SL)?
Did you install Lion on an empty partition, or did you upgrade Snow Leopard?  If you upgraded, I'd not recommend erasing it, since your backups are apparently gone.  It's doubtful Snow Leopard will recognize them.
It's not just backups on the drive either, there are other important things on there, so why won't they show?
Mixing Time Machine backups and other data is not a good idea.  See #3 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  It sounds like the whole disk is corrupted.
I just really don't understand how this happened. Could it not be an issue with WD because they haven't issued firmware to support Lion yet?
If this is a simple external HD, connected by USB or FireWire, no, unless you installed some of WD's software on it.  That shouldn't prevent it from being seen at all, but anything's possible.

  • Upgrading Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0 Ram/Video Card/Hard Drives

    Hi there,
Ok so I am an avid Mac user, but have neglected one of my machines lately. This old Power Mac G5 just pushed the 3 year mark and I had a bunch of repairs done to it (New Logic Board, Hard Drive, Power Supply) before the Apple Care ran out. I used to do all of my editing and stuff on it but haven't had time this past year so it has just sat here and not gotten any use. I felt as if it was time to get back in the game so I picked up another Apple 20" monitor, some M-Audio studio monitors, a 11" Wacom, but feel the machine is too outdated to do anything.
Ok first off, I am looking to upgrade from the four 256 sticks (1GB) that I have in my computer with some 2 2GB kits (1GB x 2) (4GB total) and have been looking at the ram that Crucial suggests for this machine (8 Slots). Is there anything that I should look for in ram that will help me get through all of my 3D motion design faster (HD Final Cut too). I don't know a lot about ram when it comes to buffers and such, just how to buy compatible ram. Any suggestions?
Second I am looking to upgrade my video card. I currently have the GeForce FX 5200 with 64 MB of VRAM, which is completely unacceptable. I am looking for a card that can handle all of my motion work along with rendering in Final Cut, something with 256MB of VRAM or more.. I want something that has 2 DVI connections so I don't need an adapter like I currently do with this card to hook up both Apple displays. Suggestions?
Lastly I am looking to up my storage space on this beast. I currently have a brand new 160GB main HDD (Courtesy Apple Care) and a 250GB Maxtor internally. I would really like to have at least a TB of storage. My question is wether I should just keep the 160 for the main boot up drive and apps along with minimum documents to keep the speeds faster, and get a 500 internal and 500 exclosure, or get two 500's for internal?

    Hi-
With RAM, fancy isn't necessary, compatible is. Buffers aren't supported, so stick with the recommended memory. Memory should be 184-pin DDR SDRAM DIMMs that are 2.5 volt, unbuffered, 8-byte, nonparity, and DDR400-compliant (PC3200).
Important: DIMMs with any of the following features are not supported in the Power Mac G5 computer: registers or buffers, PLLs, ECC, parity, or EDO RAM.
For two DVI outputs, and the power to run your software, the only choices are the Geforce 6800GT and the Geforce 6800 Ultra. For a bit less money, but requires an ADC to DVI adapter for second DVI, the Radeon X800XT will help with the softwares needs. These benchmarks will help you see the performance of the cards.
For storage, the 160gb will work for OS and applications, but you might as well add two 500gb-750gb drives. The new, enterprise drives have great performance, and though larger, will most probably work faster as a startup drive than the 160gb drive. These benchmarks are from a Mac Pro test, but the results illustrate the speed of the larger drives.
The Western Digital SE16 series, or the Seagate ES series offer excellent performance and reliability. See Storage Reviews. For a 1tb drive, see this article.
Of course, whatever you install, add enough external for full backup capabilities.

  • Upgrading from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard with no DVD Drive?

I have a 2008 Macbook 4.1 running 10.5.8, and I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard and eventually to Lion, But by my own doing I broke the dvd drive by dropping it down the stairs a few years back (thank god that was the only thing to brake) and have no way of installing!
I thought maybe i could buy a external dvd drive and install from that, but I don't want to buy one if its just not going to work! I'd love to be able to buy a brand new macbook pro but that is out of the question at the moment, but a external dvd drive sounds affordable.
Any ideas if this will work? and what sort of dvd drive to go for?
your thoughts would be much appreciated Thank you.

Thanks Ross, that is an excellent idea and have thought about it in the past, but because I only have my MacBook I don't want to have to rely on other people to update or even reinstall if something goes seriously wrong. I want a DVD drive that will work with my mac just ad the internal would. Maybe I should just bight the bullet and just get it fixed, but am sure a portable DVD drive would be atleast the price. Appreciate your advice though thank you.
