I would like to install Leopard. After some research, I've purchase Leopard 10.5.1
and this is my laptops' details.

Memory 768MB DDR SDRAM
Machine Model: iBook G4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)

CPU Speed: 1.2 GHz

beside installing leopard DVD, what else should i do to my laptop? increase memory??and so on...
I am really bad at this, even though i have been using mac for past 10 years...in the advertising company..now i really have to do something with my personal laptop, i can't connect to my iphone at all, lots of programs are way too slow..
please advice..

As a precaution, before upgrading the OS, you should create a backup of the entire system, or at least, any data you do not wish to lose or corrupt.
In addition to the Archive & Install procedure, there is also a Simple Upgrade, or an Erase & Install option.
Review the info here About Installation Options.
Specifically; "About Upgrade to Mac OS X
Upgrading to Mac OS X takes a little longer than installing it on a volume without Mac OS X, but it is the least intrusive way to install--most of your existing settings and applications are left untouched during an upgrade. In other words, you won't have to configure a lot of settings afterwards."

Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

as for upgrading, depends what model you have.
Leopard is indeed pricey; it was pricey when it first came out and many resellers now ask a premium for it.
Snow Leopard may be an option, at $29 it's not a bad bargain. However, you could have grief with printer and scanner drivers, and other software needing updates (Adobe for one) many of them not free.

Personally I never trust my data to everything working perfectly.
I always backup everything twice at least.

Go to the website for your printer manufacturer and check if there are SL compatible drivers available for your model. This is not an unusual issue, and if the printer's not too old, the updated drivers should be there.
If you can't find one on the manufacturer's site, try Apple Support Downloads and look back through the updates in there; Apple has issued generic updates for a number of printers since SL's release, so you may find one that way.
After installing the new drivers you'll need to setup the printer again.

I installed Leopard 10.5.6 and then it upgraded to 10.5.8, when I installed it I had the old info saved to a "previous systems" folder, where most of my artwork, etc. were saved, I have a one terabyte Lacie backup that unfortunately did not work as it was intended...it saved the new info and not the old. I did look into the system preferences folder and found the classic file, of course it wouldn't launch...but I have the old G 5 startup discs and will try to do it as you stated. I will try also to move it out of the previous folders file to my hard drive and see how that works.

It sounds more like you are trying to use an updater rather than the Snow Leopard installer DVD. You might read over the following:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
E. If updating:
Download and install update(s)
Use Software Update, or
Download standalone updater(s).

You can purchase Snow Leopard from the Apple Store ( and numerous resellers). It costs about $30, plus state taxes.
10.6.6 up to 10.6.8 will install the "App Store" where you can purchase and download "Lion" (10.7).
Make sure your machine meets the Lion install requirements before you buy.

I just upgraded my mac book pro to snow leopard, now my I photo library dissappeared

I am a novice in all things technical and I need some help figuring out my I photo library. I bought my Mac Book Pro in 2009 and shared/transferred all information from my G5 (2004) to my laptop. I Photo was also transferred and I have started to add more photos to this laptop.
I just upgraded my mac Book Pro to Snow Leopard and now when I open my Iphoto library it shows some of the library but now all. My husband said it is still there but the system is not able to look in the right place due to the sharing...so I am totaly confused?????

On you MBP try the three fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
On your G5 make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and run the same 3 fixes.

Upgrading from 10.4.11 'Tiger' to Leopard

Hi, I have a mac running on 10.4.11 and someone bought my daughter 'iLife 09' as a Christmas Present but we cannot install it unless we have Leopard Software. Is there anyway to 'upgrade' to Leopard without having to go out and buy a whole new Snow Leopard Software package. I took the iLife 09 back to the apple store to get a refund - because I thought I might as well just buy the new Snow Leopard as it is included in this - but as it had been opened (my daughter tried to install it) they would not give a refund. So if I can upgrade at a relatively low cost to Leopard, then I can install iLife so it won't have gone to waste. Can anyone advise? Apple told me to ring one of the London stores and ask for the 'Archive' department, but I'm sure I read somewhere that it is possible to upgrade online. Limnos is correct. Also, note, the Find File system of 10.5 is much weaker than 10.3.9 for locating files quickly by name. Though if you find files mainly by content, then it is better to have Spotlight. See this thread on how difficult it is to work with Spotlight based systems:

Maybe this is an opportunity to decide if you really want to upgrade that machine to Leopard or Tiger, or just stick with Panther. Unless you have some software that is Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.4 only compatible, I see no reason to upgrade your Panther machine to Tiger or Leopard. Furthermore, Upgrading to Leopard will disable the Classic environment, unless you add an Firewire external hard drive with 10.4.11 or earlier, or erase and partition your hard drive to have 10.4.11 or earlier on it.
