Upgrading PSE 8 to PSE 10 and adding Lightroom 3

Good Afternoon:
Presently I have PSE 8, with the software and photographs - about 4,500 - stored on a 1.0 tB external harddrive that I disconnect from the desk top when not in use.  I did it this way because the desk top on has a 0.5 tB drive.  I have purchased the boxed versions of PSE 10 and LR 3.  LR 3 will be used for the initial intake of photos and processing and PSE 10 will be used for the harder edits.  My questions are:
First, should the PSE 10 and LR 3 software be placed on the desk top or on the external drive with the photo files only stored on the external drive.  The desk top drive is about 50% full.  I have not looked into adding a second drive to the desk top.
Second, all present photos have been processed using using PSE 8, such as review and deleting the ones that weren't any good.  Do I have to, as has been suggested on another web site, keep PSE 8 so that I can open the files with PSE 10 and LR3?  After I upgrade to the new software, I'm intending to delete PSE 8.
Third, I've heard some horror stories and experieneced one myself when upgrading Adobe software or changing computers; Adobe can be pretty intolerant of the slightest change in the path of a file.  Is there anything that I need to do/not do to make these upgardes as seemless as possible.
Fourth, is there any way to save multiple files to PSD files using the edit screen without having to open them in the organizer.  My books indicate that it can be done, but I have had no luck at this.
Fifth, Photoshop has been a steep learning curve for me.  I have not completed after two years final editing of any photograph because I'm still discovering and learning new techniques, and the obsession of the perfect edit, if such a thing even exists.
Any advice is appreciated.

LR4 has been released, check to see if you can upgrade at a reasonable cost.

PSE10 and LR should always be installed on an internal drive for performance reasons.  In LR, you can set its catalog to use the external drive for its catalog only if you're running in to a free space crunch on your internal drive, but with 50% free that shouldn't be an issue.  Using the external drive for the LR catalog is not a good idea, because of performance issues.

If you have not used the PSE8 Organizer to tag your photos, etc., then there is no reason to keep PSE8 on your computer.  If you've added tags to the photos in the PSE8 Organizer, then use PSE8 to write the keyword tags to the images and import them into LR.

The only problem with disconnected files would be within the PSE8 Organizer if you moved the photos outside of PSE.  If you import the photos from their new, permanent locations into LR (starting fresh), you'll be OK.

I don't understand what you're trying to do.

Yeah, that's the fun of photo editing software -- there's usually more than one way to achieve an effect, and always something more to learn.
The bottom line is that you've purchased two excellent products in PSE10 and LR.  Using LR to organize your photos and PSE's Editor for editing is a fine method.  The only difficulty would be in the transition from the PSE8 Organizer to LR, and only if you have tags, etc., defined in PSE8.

  • Since upgrading my Mac OS 10.9 and Mavericks, I am unable to open App Store and other problems.

My computer has gone haywire since upgrading to Mac OS 10.9 and adding Mavericks. Mail was a big problem with my not being able to read messages, but now there has been a mail upgrade to solve that. However, still cannot open App Store from my Dock and cannot open Software Update from the apple menu. Lots of other screwy things going on and Apple seems of no help to try and resolve these issues. Anyone with similiar problems or issues?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Upgrade to Photoshop Elements 10 - Security Advisory for PSE 8 and earlier

    https://www.adobe.com/support/security/advisories/apsa11-03.html
Based on the aforementioned advisory, those of you using Photoshop Elements 8, or earlier, should probably upgrade to v10 (or at least 9). Although it has been stated that, "Adobe is not aware of any attacks exploiting these vulnerabilities against Adobe Photoshop Elements to date", it seems silly to run software that contains one or more known critical vulnerabilities and Adobe is NOT going to fix the issue since PSE 8 and earlier versions are no longer supported. Nice of Adobe not to bother fixing a vulnerability in one of their software products when the version involved is only ~2 years old (PSE 8) but the mentality appears to be one designed to virtually force users to pay for upgrades every year or two. FWIW.....

I admit that it is rather strange that they just issued that advisory when they probably knew about it when pse 8 was stiil being sold.
Since pse 8 shares much of the code of cs4, look at the date on this advisory for cs4 and yes adobe doesn't have a good track
record about updating photoshop elements and that is kinda bothersome.

I have been using Adobe Photoshop Elements on an older Mac...just bought Mac Mini and migrated all my files...but 4.0 Does not work....can I upgrade PSE 4.0 to PSE 13?

Yes, any version of PSE qualifies for upgrade pricing, but if you're in the US you might want to consider running the trial  for now and waiting for the black friday specials, when the full version will be a lot less than the adobe upgrade price.

No. The CS products and Elements products are completely unrelated and I'm not awre of any specific discounts. And even if there were, they would be insignificant, given the low price of the Elements products.

  • Upgrade PSE 9 to LR  3.3 -- some files not supported

i just upgraded my PSE 9 catalog to LR 3.3. Upgrade seemed to go fine,  but afterward LR said it "added 20,000 photos but 11 were in a format  this is not supported."  Any idea how to figure out what photos (or  perhaps videos) those were?

sounds like a great idea, but i converted from PSE 9 and my understanding is that psedbtool doesn't work with it?
Oops, yes, that's correct. A couple of people have asked for the psedbtool source to see if they could make it work with PSE 9, but I haven't heard back their results.
    A couple more suggestions:
    - Use my Any File plugin to start importing all files from whatever root folder you keep your pics in -- browse to the root folder, click Choose Selected, and the list of all files under the chosen folder that aren't in the LR catalog will be displayed.  You can copy and paste that list.  (Don't click Import to complete the import.)
    http://www.johnrellis.com/lightroom/anyfile.htm
    - Add a dummy keyword to all the photos in your LR catalog, and do Metadata > Save Metadata To File. This will have the side effect of changing the date-modified of every file in your catalog. In a command prompt, type this command:
    dir /b /od /s /tw root-pictures-folder > allfiles.txt
This will list in "allfiles.txt" all files within your root pictures folder, in ascending order of date-modified -- the files not in the LR catalog will be at the top.
    - Use the LR/Transporter plugin to list all the files in your LR catalog.  Use the "dir" command above in a command prompt (without the /od switch) to list all the files in your root pictures folder.  Use Word, Excel, or a Unix/Linux "diff" command to find the files that are in one list but not the other.

  • Photomail in PSE 7 and/ or 9 - need help

Somehow I no longer can add text in my photomails (both in PSE 7 and 9 (trial version), where I could do this before. Has someone any ideas on how to fix this for this is one of the features I really like in PSE and also was the reason to install PSE 9 to see if I could add text in this version.

Are you talking about adding text in Stationary dialog when in Photomail workflow or it is in email client windows. For me it works in PSE7 and PSE9 both.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 Organizer: Full screen view of lower quality than with PSE 10 and before?!

Upgrading from PSE 10 to 11, I noticed that when I watch my images with the organizer in PSE 11 in full screen view mode (F11), while the images load faster, they are shown in a lower quality than in PSE 10 or any other version of PSE that I owned before. In PSE 11, after the initial viewing in full screen (in the "fit screen" mode), when I click with the mouse on an image to display the "100%" view, there is a delay and the program says "Loading...", after which the 100% view in the full screen mode appears. When I then click another time with the mouse on the image to get back to "fit screen" mode, I get an image of better quality than during the initial view!
So it seems like the program first gives a faster, but lower quality view of the image in full screen mode, and only after the user requests a 100% view, it actually loads the image with full detail, which is then preserved when going back to the "fit screen" view. This is a serious issue for me, because I also use PSE organizer to present my pictures to other people, and I don't want to show them some lower quality versions of my images, but the full quality ones, without having to first choose "100% view" and then go back to "fit screen".
How can I make the PSE 11 organizer give me a full-quality full screen image right away, as this used to be the case in PSE10 and before?
(I have both versions, PSE 11 and PSE 10, now on the same computer and tested this to confirm that the PSE 11 initial full screen view is of lower quality than the PSE 10 one. Also in PSE 10, there is practically no delay for displaying the "100%" view afterwards, indicating that the image was loaded with full detail right away.)

    - Update:
    * Adobe's senior support level has replied to me about this issue as follows:
    "Thank you for contacting Adobe.
When you press the F11 button, Organizer 11 uses the Bicubic
interpolation mainly because it is less processor intensive compared to
Bicubic Sharper, and it helps to create the preview on the fly, rather
than based on the thumbnail cache.
When you zoom out from the 100% view, Elements Organizer uses Bicubic
Sharper. This is because Bicubic Sharper is used for image reduction, so
if the 100% view is larger than the available screen space, it will need
to shrink. The Bicubic Sharper images may look more crisp however, Like
any sharpening algorithm, Bicubic Sharper introduces halos and
edge-enhancement artifacts. Those halos are typically slight, but any
further sharpening (which you'll need when preparing an image for print,
for example) will exaggerate them. This is expected behavior. The
Organizer isn't great for determining exact quality, I recommend you to
use Elements Editor for this purpose.
    Thank you,
    Bobby Johnson,
    Adobe Technical Support."
    * My reply on this to Adobe is:
    "Hello Bobby,
thank you for your reply. Now at least we are talking about the same thing.
Why I am wondering about the choice to use the "Bicubic" algorithm when pressing F11 in PSE 11 is that all previous versions of PSE that I owned (which spans from PSE 6 to PSE 10) did use the "Bicubic Sharper" algorithm right away when pressing F11. So apparently Adobe didn't worry about processor intensity of this algorithm then, and computers are getting all the time more powerful.
It is true that in some situations, the "Bicubic Sharper" algorithm may introduce halos and edge-enhancement artifacts, as you write. On the other hand, especially on smaller resolution screens, the results of the "Bicubic Sharper" algorithm may look more crisp and lively, while the ones of the "Bicubic" algorithm may look more flat and lack fine detail. This is not only my personal opinion, but as I have brought up this topic in several forums, I can see that I am not alone here.
So assuming that the question about preferring "Bicubic Sharper" or "Bicubic" as a default algorithm when pressing F11 is partly a matter of taste, and partly a matter of the hardware the user has available, why can Abobe not give the user an option to choose which one he/she would prefer? For instance, F11 gives full screen view with "Bicubic" applied, and CTRL+F11 with "Bicubic sharper"? Or make this an option in the preferences?
As I am using the PSE organizer also to present pictures to other people (and I know many people who use it that way too), I would like to show them my pictures as sharp and detail-rich as possible. Therefore, I would highly appreciate an option as described above to be implemented in the PSE 11 organizer via an update. It should be fairly easy from a programming point of view, since both algorithms are already contained in the program anyway."
    * If you support this suggestion of mine as stated above, please also contact Adobe accordingly! The more support requests they get for this, the more likely it is that they will implement this update! You may mention my case number 0184046323 for reference.

  • Can PSE 6 and PSE 8 Run at the Same Time?

I have Windows 7 and recently upgraded to PSE 8 and have had problems with Photo Mail and email attachments. I did not have email attachment problems with PSE 6 so I wonder if I can run both 6 and 8. Will there be a catalog problem? When I loaded PSE 8 the first time the catalog needed to be converted. Will this make it unstable for PSE 6?

    As requested.

  • RAW converter, PSE 9 and Windows 8

I've just upgraded from Windows 7 to 8 and now find that when I try and open Canon CR2 files in the PSE 9 RAW converter, I get a message saying PSE can't open the file because it is "the wrong type of file".  TIF and Jpeg files open without any problem, so it seems to be just the RAW converter that is the problem.
Also, when I download pictures from my camera into the Organiser, I am no longer given the option to select only certain images to be downloaded and given a particular folder.  The only route that seems to be available is to download everything on the camera card.
Anybody got any ideas how to solve these two problems?  All suggestions gratefully received.

  • What is the difference between PSE 8 and 9

I was wondering what is the difference between PSE 8 and 9 and are the enhancements worth upgrading to PSE 9?

iOS is the operating system for mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads, and iPods), as well as AppleTV. Mavericks is the current operating system for Macs (laptops and desktop computers). Yosemite is its newest iteration, currently in beta and due for release in the next few weeks.
If you are looking for something more specific concerning functionality, you will have to be more specific with your question.

  • List of differences between PSE 40 and PSE30

A lot of users are asking what are the differences between PSE 30 and PSE 40.
This Thread provides information on this subject. First, you will find information copied from the section "New Features" of the useful "Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 User Guide". Then later on, you might find additional information on the same subject provided by users of PSE.
--- Start of copy of information in the PSE 4.0 User Guide ----
    1 What's new in PSE 4.0
    1.1 Editing and selection
    1.1.1 Magic Selection Brush tool
Easily and accurately select portions of your photos using this new tool in either Standard Edit and Quick Fix. Simply scribble or place dots on the object you want to select -no need to precisely outline the object- and Adobe Photoshop Elements selects the object for you. You can add to or subtract from the selection by using additional tools in the options bar. (See User Guide "To use the Magic Selection Brush tool" on page 193.)
    1.1.2 Magic Extractor.
Easily select an object in a photo and extract it from its background. Just scribble or place dots on
the object you want to extract; then scribble or place dots on the background, and Photoshop Elements separates the object from its background. This tool is perfect for creating composites or scrapbook images. (See User Guide "To use the Magic Extractor" on page 194.)
    1.1.3 Skin tone adjustment
Click an area of skin and watch the tonal balance of all colors in the photo improve. If you
want, you can also manually adjust the color by using color sliders. (See User Guide "To adjust the color of skin tone" on page 224.)
    1.1.4 Red eye removal
Automatically remove red eye during import, or select one or more files and easily remove red eye
in either the Organizer or the Editor. (See User Guide "To remove red eye" on page 249.)
    1.1.5 Defringe
Automatically remove the colored specs or halo around the edges of a selection. (See User Guide "To defringe a Selection" on page 200.)
    1.1.6 Straighten tool
Straighten and crop crooked photos by drawing a horizontal or vertical line in the image. Photoshop
Elements aligns the photo to that line. (See User Guide "To straighten an image" on page 243.)
    1.1.7 WYSIWYG font menu
What you see is what you get -see what each font looks like from within the font menu. (See
User Guide "To choose a font family and style" on page 332.)
    1.2 Sharing and printing
1.2.1 One-click printing (US, Canada, Japan only)
Order prints and professional hardbound photo books directly from Photoshop Elements simply by dragging the items to the Order Prints palette. (See User Guide "To use the Order Prints palette (US, Canada, Japan only)" on page 401.)
    1.2.2 Slide shows on TV
If you have Windows¨ XP Media Center 2005 installed, you can view your Photoshop Elements
slide shows on your TV and navigate using your TV remote control. (See User Guide "To output a slide show" on page 354.)
    1.3 Tagging and organizing
    1.3.1 Face tagging
Select a group of photos and let Photoshop Elements isolate and display all the faces so that you can
quickly tag them. The Find Faces dialog box displays thumbnails of each face until you tag it. (See User Guide "To automatically find faces for tagging" on page 101.)
    1.3.2 Search by metadata
Search for a variety of metadata criteria, such as file name, file type, shutter speed, camera
model, date, and tags. You can search on multiple criteria at once. (See User Guide "To find photos by details (metadata)" on page 89.)
    1.3.3 PDF support
Manage and tag PDF files in the Organizer. PDF files remain intact as one file that you can tag. Open
the PDF in the Editor to extract individual pages. (See User Guide "To open a PDF file" on page 148.)
--- Continuation in next Post of this Thread ----

click the Commit button , which is now conveniently located at the bottom right corner of the crop border. (See User Guide "To crop an image" on page 240.)
    2.1.2 Paragraph text
Create paragraph text by dragging a border with the Text tool. The text you enter inside the border
wraps to remain inside the boundaries. (See User Guide "To add text" on page 329.)
    2.1.3 Quick Fix
Use the newly enhanced automatic correction options for the most common photo flaws. (See User Guide "To correct color in Quick Fix" on page 207.)
