Upgrading question (quick n00b thing)

I only have Mac OS 10.3.9, and I want to upgrade to 10.4, but, 10.5 is coming out soon. It would cost £100 pounds to upgrade to 10.4, but if I did that I would only have to spend another £100 pounds in the new year, would it be better to wait until 10.5 comes out? Will it upgrade from 10.3 to 10.5 with no problems for the same amount of money?
I also use Logic Express 7, will the audio units I have installed (minimonsta, oddity, M-Tron) remain compatable if I upgrade Mac OS?

if you are happy right now with 10.3.9, then there maybe no reason to upgrade unless you just want to... Moving from Panther to Leopard will probably be easy enough as long as your computer meets the requirements for it (not yet stated, but historically going back several generations... some G3 Macs can still run Tiger effectively)
As for 3rd party plugin compatibility, that depends on the developer. In some cases it's necessary for the developers to update their plugins in order to maintain compatibility with OS updates. You might want to check with M-tron or post in the Logic forums to see if anyone has experience with them under Tiger.

I am getting an upgrade from work so I can have Tiger.
Should I backup before upgrading? How?
And if it does not work out, how can I revert back to 10.3?
    Thanks~!

Should I backup before upgrading? How?
You should backup before installing anything new. You should backup before examining your machine for hardware or software trouble. You should backup after writing data that is important to you. Here's my backup FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
If you follow my cloning instructions there, you can just clone back your backup if the 10.4 upgrade doesn't work.
To upgrade to 10.4 you'll need to at least double your RAM to have effective speed. You'll also want at least 10 GB of free hard disk space. My upgrade FAQ* explains other things you need to watch out for:

  • Keeping my bill Price upgrading Question.

Right now I am on a Plan with 4 others who all have basic phones. I am the only one who has a Smart phone which i have had for 3 years now and it cost me 9.99 for line access and 30.00 for my 2gb data package. Now if i upgrade to a new smart phone what happens because prices seem to have change? will this change my line access from 9.99 to what it is now i think 40.00? Will i have to buy an off contract price phone to keep my bill the same? thanks

sanch0, with so many new phones coming out, it is definitely an exciting time. I can understand your concern with plans, and possible changes that may take hold if you upgrade. The good thing is that you can continue with your current pricing if you want. No need to change to a More Everything plan if you do not want to.

Security upgrade question - I have a 4S phone v6.01 with an upgrade to IOS 7.04 already downloaded and ready for install.  I would like to install the 6.1.6 security upgrade instead. How do I delete the ios7 in the queue or have the 6.1.1 pushed as an option to the phone?

You can't install iOS 6.1.6 on that device and must update it to 7.0.6.

  • IOS4 Upgrade Questions

    Hello,
Im considering upgrading from iPhone OS 3.1.2 on my iPod Second Generation to iOS 4. I have many apps which store information (eg. game saves) which I can't retrieve (eg. save to my PC). Will I lose this when I upgrade? Are the things ive heard about the iPod being so slow its unusable after upgrading true? Are there any major risks involved in the update?
    Thanks,
    Nz26

The iOS 4 update differs in that it will erase your music, so be warned.
Your game saves are usually saved as part of your backup.
Temporarily disconnecting from the internet may speed up your backup a little since network activity seems to throttle it for some reason. But make sure to reconnect before it finishes because iTunes needs to connect to Apple to do the update.
There are reports of iOS 4 being slower on older devices, though the 2g is faster than the original iPod touch and iPhone 3G. The 4.1 update coming out on the 8th is supposed to alleviate that.
As always, make sure you have a backup before doing an update.

  • I have an upgrade question. I received a notification when I connected my computer to the internet that Lightroom 5.7.1 was available

I have an upgrade question. I received a notification when I connected my computer to the internet that Lightroom 5.7.1 was available it included HDR & Panoramic photo merge. I cant find these. Where do I find them.

well that was a big waste of my time & data allowance then ...
I live in a flaky slow internet area & I keep my photo edit machine off the internet unless & want to update something. CC is no use to me & that useless update just used up a 12th of my allowance for the year ...

  • Another RAM upgrade question

    Hi everyone,
I know there seems to be lots of RAM upgrade questions here but hey thats what forums are for.
    I'm looking to upgrade my macbook's RAM it's currently got 2GB (2x1GB)
Is it possible to purchase 1x4GB and put that with one of my current 1GB sticks to create a total of 5GB?
I would be interested to know if this is possible or if anyone has tried it.
    Thanks in advance
    Scott

This will work if your MacBook is late '07 or newer.

  • Quick upgrading question...will give points to first helpful person

I have never upgraded my iphone before (crazy I know). My version is 4.2.8.
    Here are my questions:
Is it ok to download the firmware for ios5 directly, bypassing the consecutive upgrades? Or do I need to go through each consecutive upgrade file, until I reach ios5? Also, should I just go for ios6?
    Thanks for any input!
    Hannah

You can only go to the highest iOS that is available. After Apple releases new software, they stop signing off on the older one and it cannot be installed. If you try and update your phone, it will go straight to iOS6.
I have no issues with iOS 6 in a house of 4 iPhones.

  • Quick Upgrade Question...

I started out w/ 7 Express. Then bought 8 express. Then upgraded Logic 8 Studio. Then upgraded to the latest Logic Pro.
Right now I'm re-installing my HD, and (maybe stupidly?) went ahead and went though installing 7 and 8 express... And now I'm looking at that huge PILE of Logic 8 Studio disks... and I'm wondering...
Can I just go ahead and install Logic Pro 9, and use my serial numbers to take care of the upgrade? Or do I need to physically upgrade to Logic 8 Studio, and then to Logic Pro 9? Are there files I need on the Logic 8 Studio disks?
    Does that make sense?
    Thanks in advance,
    e

Can I just go ahead and install Logic Pro 9, and use my serial numbers to take care of the upgrade?
    Yes,you don't need to install LP8 ….
unless you are working with people that are using LP8 and you need to work on projects compatible with their version.
Are there files I need on the Logic 8 Studio disks?
    No

  • Wireless upgrade and screen goes dim questions? - 2different things in one thread

I have a T42.  Recent upgrade is replacing the hard drive and upgrade the RAM to max.  I am thinking of upgrading the wireless card to improve the internet speed.  Any suggestion?
The machine was not behaving lately.  The screen went dim (very dim) and sometimes black and white.  It seems that it went to battery mode by itself.  Wondering what causes this?  The machine was connected to AC and I set never hibernate and turn-off when AC plug-in.
    Thanks.

Cannot possibly be, as for one it is a desktop computer that has no power management, and two the menu bars, tools and everything else stays the same brightness, it is only the editing window itself.
Thank you for trying, it is appreciated.

  • Quick RAM upgrade question.

Just got new 3 GHz Mac Pro that came with 2GB of RAM in 4 x 512 configuration.
I just took delivery of an extra 2GB of RAM from Crucial in the post. This new ram came as 2 x 1GB sticks.
Can anyone advice which board I insert them into, the same one as where the 4 x 512 sticks are, or the empty board?
    Cheers.

Yes and no. What you should do is to actually try it to see what gives better performance.
The reason it's yes is that the Mac Pro, for whatever reason, does favour Riser A in some way. So, with the standard 1GB RAM you will get better performance with it being in Riser A than Riser B. Go figure! This is why Apple says to fill them in the order they do.
The problem is though is that Apple does not presume as to the size of the DIMMs you're filling your slots with. The RAM in the Mac Pro performs best when there is balance. Where there is an inbalance you favour Riser A. So, from this you put your better 2GB RAM configuration into Riser A which is the 2 x 1GB DIMMs (lower latency when using the full 2GB as slots 3/4 aren't used). This goes against Apple's fill order.
So what do you do. Well… try it both ways and just do what performs best. In actual fact the best thing to do is to buy 1 or 2 more GB (prefereably 2 x 1GB) to fill all 8 slots. It's why it is recommended that you either have 4 or 8 DIMMs so these "conflicts" don't come into play like they do here.

  • Mid 2009 MacBook Pro 13 Hard Drive Upgrade Questions

I bought an upgraded hard drive for my mid-2009 MBP 13. I've done some reading and it appears that my model of MBP shouldn't have drive issues, but I still have a few questions that I'm hoping someone will answer. Perhaps this will all boil down to a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. That is, I may be worried without good reason. If so, I apologize ahead of time.
    MacBook Pro 5,5
    2.26 GHz
    4GB RAM
    10.6.3
    Firmware version is: EFI64
The stock drive is a TOSHIBA MK1655GSXF (160 GB):
The new hard drive is the Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 GB 5400 RPM drive.
I noticed that the temperature seemed to spike after installing the new drive. I didn't get the temperature of the hard drive before I took it out, but the CPU was consistently around 170 degrees Fahrenheit and the fan was in the 2,800-2,900 RPM range.
After putting the stock drive back in the MBP, the temps are consistently 142-145 degrees F for the CPU and 95-97 degrees F for the hard drive. The fan is right around 2,000 RPM.
I've read a bit about outrageous load cycles and just wanted to check the numbers.
The WD Scorpio Blue around 4,055 after 27 power on hours.
The stock drive was at last count, at 206701 after 2215 power on hours.
The machine is doing comparable things, downloading podcasts, Time Machine backups, browsing, etc.
The general questions, I have are:
Is the temperature supposed to spike like that when handling a larger drive?
If so, what is a reasonable range? I know I don't have the temperature of the new drive, but if I knew what to expect, I guess I would be more confident putting the new drive back in and not returning it.
What's a normal/healthy/reasonable (don't really know the term I'm grasping for) load cycle to see? I divided the load cycles by the number of power on hours and get around 150 for the WD and 93 for the Toshiba. Are either of those outrageously good or bad? I haven't been able to tell in my reading.
    The bottom-line questions are:
Am I just overreacting based on what I've read? Or, is something not kosher and should I return the new drive and get something else? Should I try hdapm or something? If I should return the drive, any recommendations?
I've talked your collective ear off, I'm sure.
Thank you in advance for your responses.
    Cheers,
    Rob

For what it's worth I've put aftermarket 7200 rpm hard drives in 2006 and 2008 15" MBP's and also a WD Scorpio Black 320GB in a 2009 13" MBP 2.53GHz and have had no changes in cpu temp or fan speed. Your fan speeds and cpu temp with the new drive sound too high. Something else is going on here. The temp is not supposed to spike when handling a larger drive. Maybe it's something like
Spotlight indexing the new drive? Have a look at your Activity Monitor for an active process drawing resources with the new drive.

  • Ultimate 3B Monitoring Prorated Upgrade Questions!?

I recently enrolled in the 3 Credit Bureau Monitoring for $24.99/Month on June 24 (almost 3 weeks ago). I got a message at the bottom of my Dashboard saying I could upgrade to the 3B Ultimate at a prorated price, since it hasn't been a month. It says you get a fresh report from all 3 Credit Bureaus quarterly, which is worth the extra $5/month for me, so I am going to do it here in the next 24-48 hours.... But my question is will it provide a "newer" or more accurate score than what I already have? It says that they have to pull the information again, and my score has been on a great climb in the 3 weeks I've been enrolled. I've got some things that haven't updated on Transunion FICO, but have on the other 2. Any help/experience is greatly appreciated!

Just want to give an update. It's been about 1 week and I've had no problems. Signing in and out of Win 7 is very fast. Much better than with XP. Even though I have a slower hard drive with Windows 7 (5400 RPM) vs Windows XP (7200 RPM), Windows 7 is faster. Startup time is about the same, but shutdown is a lot faster, just like signing and out and logging in and out.
Wireless LAN (WLAN) configuration was painless and has worked well. It automatically reconnects when I boot and does not drop my connection when i stay logged in but switch users (this happened to me on XP with the IBM Access software).
It has been well worth the upgrade so far.
    Systems I use: T42P, T61P, Y510, A600

  • Another "using another person's upgrade" question

Sorry in advance if this question has been covered 100 times before.  I spent some time trying to find an answer that fits my scenario in the forums but didn't find an exact fit.
My Droid Incredible touch screen stopped working this past week (no drops, no water, no reason to stop working) and since I am 1yr and 3months into owning the device and have no insurance the local store said I'm pretty much SOL and to contact HTC.  Dealing with HTC has been the worst customer service experience of my life and they pretty much said the same thing since they only cover their devices for 1 year.  (Said I could send it in to their repair facility on my dime for 2 weeks minimum and they would determine the repair cost and contact me).  So I can't upgrade until April on my account and am trying to figure out a way to get a new phone (not at full price).
My girlfriend has been up for an upgrade for months now (she uses a basic phone, no data) and isn't in any hurry to use it.  She does't ever want a smart phone and said that I should just use her upgrade.  So, the details and questions are as follows:
    1. We are not on the same account (family plan).  We have individual plans.  My plan is 400 or so mintues of talk and unlimited data.  Her plan is 400 minutes or so of talk.
    2. I would like to use her upgrade to get an iphone 4s.
    3. We do not want to change her plan (its something like $30 a month grandfathered plan).
    4. I would like to keep my current plan as well.  (unlimited data)
Is it possible to make all of these things happen?  I have read that it is simple if you are on a family plan to do this.  Can we go down to the local store and get an iphone 4s and activate it on my account instead of hers?
As a side question (and to make things more complicated)... Does anyone know if we can we combine our accounts together into 1 account and save money or minutes.  We both hardly use our minutes at all and aside from me using the data plan for work we toss out hundreds of minutes per month.
Thanks in advance for any replies!

Most likely - if it is a corporate store.  If it's an "authorized reseller" or a third party store, it amy be more difficult and they may tell you they can't do it.

This MAY make it more simple!  Does anyone know if we can we combine our accounts together into 1 account and save money or minutes.  We both hardly use our minutes at all and aside from me using the data plan for work we toss out hundreds of minutes per month.
You can get a family plan with 700 shared minutes, 2 lines, for $70, and the data plan on your phone would be $30.  I'm not sure if you would be able to keep your unlimited data though - you might be if you do this in stages.  First, combine your two accounts into one family plan and do nothing about upgrading for now.  Let that "settle"; your upgrade dates and eligibilities will remain the same as they were on your individual plans.  If you can make this transition and keep your unlimited data, then you're good to go upgrade the eligible line (your girlfirend's) to the iPhone, but activate it on your line.  Her line's contract will be extended for two years, but she can use her old phone and you can use the iPhone.  If the unlimited data did carry over, it will remain for the iPhone too.
Thanks in advance for any replies!

  • HDD/RAM upgrade question - 400 mhz sawtooth

    Hello!
My Sister has a Sawtooth G4 - Well, I believe it's a sawtooth anyway. I don't know for sure, so I'll post a bunch of specs:
It's a 400mhz model, early 2000. It shipped with a 10GB HDD, and 128 RAM. I believe it also has a 100 Mbps Ethernet. It has a DVI and VGA monitor video card, but i'm not sure the Video RAM level. It has an internal FW 400 port as well. The internal Airport card is shot - er, maybe the extension.
It has major issues with the system - and it seems to stem from a botched OS 9.2 install. It's running 9.1, but with trouble. For one, I can't open the extension manager. For two, it's slow, and acts funny.
Well, I thought i'd be nice, and try to get the G4 working for my Sister. It seems that it may require an Clean install of OS 9.0. Oh well, I can do that easily enough. However, before I go through all that trouble, I'm contemplating upgrading the hard drive (at least). With only 10GB, it's not very useful for iTunes, Photoshop, or our old OS 9 games - things she'd like to have.
I looked at the specs for the Mac at:
    http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/g4saw.shtml
It takes an 3.5 inch Ultra ATA drive? I've seen those around - and a 60GB drive or so is becoming pretty cheap. (I've seen 80G for under $50) I just figured i'd ask if anyone has tips on what to buy, how to install it, and Particularly if I need any special adapters for the G4. It does have a slot for a second internal HDD. I've also heard that a fast, second internal HDD can overheat the computer - is this a common issue I should be worried about?
The same questions go for the RAM. I'd like to add at least an extra 128MB, but I'm not entirely sure what to get. The above site mentions that it uses PC100 SDRAM in DIMM mode? Hmmm... I'll have to look around.
Please excuse any silly questions, I'm just far more familiar with more current systems, and it's 1 AM
    Thanks,
    Dan
PS: It looks to have a slot for a floppy drive under the DVD-ROM drive. I have a bunch of files on our OLD PowerBook 5300 that i'd like to move - but I need a floppy drive. Our old external USB floppy drive is.... very dead. The external floppy drives i've seen at stores seem to be pretty expensive, but internal drives are still fairly cheap (some under $30). How hard would it be to find/buy/install a compatible floppy drive? What format would it need to be? If such an upgrade runs over the $40-50 that a new USB drive costs, it's not really worth it.
    15" Powerbook G4 (May 2005 ed), iMac DV (9.2.2)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1G Ram, 192 (iMac)

    Wow, thanks again!
I figured out that this is the AGP graphics Sawtooth - not the Yikes model. Where do these names come from?
As per upgrading to OS X - we have a G5 which she can use, and a XP box - which is down with the flu for the third (or fourth?) time. Therefore, the G4 will stay OS 9. She just wants to have a reliable machine that can play DVDs and music, and play some of our old OS 9 games. It's not intended to run any new programs, just the old ones that she can't run now. When I mentioned photoshop - it's a "Limited edition" of version 5.0 - and it's far, far, FAR more reliable on the G4 than on our 2-year-old XP box, despite the G4 running 9.1 with a wimpy 128 meg ram!
The main reason for upgrading the HDD was to make it more practical for games and MP3s - via iTunes 2! It won't play AAC, but it plays MP3s fine. She has at least 8 Gig of music - too much for a 10G drive! (Even half of it leaves precious little expansion room)
I'm watching for a "small" HDD - it seems that our local Fry's is no longer selling anything smaller than 100G - which was $100! Or perhaps they were just sold out at the time. I'll keep an eye out for another sale. In fact, asking my friend for an old drive is a good idea. They have parts from at least a dozen old windows and linux boxes floating around - so they likely have a drive or two. If it's a used HDD, loaded with Windows (probably 95-2000), will it confuse the system before re-formatting?
    As per RAM:
I'm quite aware of the lack of RAM. However, I'll have to watch for sales! I'm not aware of any "Mom and Pop" stores close by, although that's a fantastic idea. A PC 133 128 MB card runs $40-50 at the local computer stores, but only $15 at OWC! Therefore, if I don't find suitable RAM locally, I'll order some. I wouldn't mind an extra 256 (or 512) for my iMac either.
Speaking of iMac - I've determined that it's the iMac DV Special ED from March 2000. (400mhz, originally 13 Gig Drive - now 60, 9.2.2) The question is whether or not it maxes out at 512 MB or 1 GB of RAM. One of the Apple support sites I found ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58007 ) said that the slot loading iMacs max out at 512. It makes no distinction between any slot loading iMac. However at http://www.lowendmac.com/imacs/dvse.shtml, it mentions that this model specifically can accept 1 gig of RAM. I'll assume that the Apple article is correct, but I'd love to get a full 650 MB if I can! (I'd love to add a 512 to the 128 I have now)
It's amazing, really - after 4 years of constant use, a hard drive motor failure (hence the 60G HDD), and a year and a half burried on a desk, the iMac is becoming more handy by the day. It's good at capturing the Video and audio from say, Halo, while my PB's too busy to run anything else (via S-Video and audio through our DV cam). It makes a great DVD player, an iTunes Jukebox, and game machine - most of my games are still OS 9. To top it off, it makes a great wireless base-station for my Nintendo DS at school, where there's no WiFi! With 30 gig of space left on the HDD, it has plenty of room for whatever I want to do with it. Guess you can "teach and old dog new tricks!'
Well, I guess this means my question is answered for now - once I find the things I need, i may have some more questions, Thanks again!
    -Dan
