Upgrading quicktime resets my preferences.

Whenever the apple software update upgrades my quicktime software it resets my preferences.
Specifically, i have the 'install quicktime icon in system tray' option disabled. But after each upgrade it is enabled again.
This is very annoying, is their any way to stop this ?
Thanks in advance.

What update to QT isn't a version change?
I can't think of any other significant programs I deal with, when they update, don't preserve your settings.
And I cannot think of any program, from MS or other vendor, that places so many links to itself upon installation or update. And really, how many people actually start QT by opening it, rather than opening a media file which causes QT to launch.

@ BDAqua > I tried your suggestion but no luck. holding opt+command just gave me a blue screen and it rebotted, pushing the disk out of the drive. Yes, the macbook has 1 gb of ram. @ Kuncklesmac > You're right about Snow Leopard being an upgrade from Leopard. I'm aware of this. And yes previously i've been told by Apple that I needed the Box Set (not the family pack.  i am using the family pack for OS Snow Leopard) to upgrade my 10.4.11 mac - they never mentioned adding ram but i figured that out on my own and an apple specialist recommended it when i purchased Snow Leopard and confirmed that I coul duse the Snow Leopard to upgarde from Tiger (10.4.11). I've also read extensively (as i said above) that it isn't necessary (always) to buy the box set. Several 10.4.11 users report having upgraded using the Snow Leopard upgrade disk only (not the Box Set) without trouble on intel macs (also see the apple link i posted). So i'm just ondering how they did it and i cannot.

Place the device in DFU mode and let iTunes restore the device to factory condition.

  • How to delete/reset Photoshop preferences

Background: Sometimes Photoshop can exhibit odd/erratic/weird behaviour.
The first step is to make sure that you are running the latest version of Photoshop, by applying the relevant updates for your version of Photoshop listed on this page:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Windows
This behaviour can sometimes be overcome by resetting the Photoshop Preference file, or individual Tool Preferences.
The procedures outlined below are the most common methods of removing the program preferences file.
Q: I am experiencing weird behaviour in Photoshop. - How do I delete / reset my preferences?
    Photoshop versions after 6.0 (including 7.0, CS, CS2 ...CS6):
A:If a tool is behaving erratically, first try resetting just that tools preferences, via the method outlined by Len Hewitt in the post below this one.
If you have larger troubles, hold down Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys (Mac: Command, Option, Shift) while starting up Photoshop. A dialog box will appear asking if you wish to delete the preferences/settings file.
A2: You can also simply search your hard drive for a *.psp file and delete it. It will be called something along the lines of "Adobe Photoshop X Prefs.psp".
Under Vista or 7, look here:
Users/[Username]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version #]/Adobe Photoshop [version #] Settings
Under Win 2k/XP the preference file will be found at:
    %windir%\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\[version #]\Adobe Photoshop [version #] Settings
[NOTE: You need to set Window's Explorer Options to "View Hidden Files and Folders" to display the Preference file]
    Photoshop Versions 5.5 and earlier:
Search for photos*.ini and delete (the file will be called photos followed by the version number - i.e photos55.ini for Photoshop 5.5, photos40.ini for Photoshop 4.0)
Resetting the preferences will restore Photoshop settings to factory defaults.
If removing the preferences files does not resolve the problem you should check the Photoshop Support pages for further guidance.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/products/photoshop.html
Note that it is possible to keep a 'healthy' copy of the Preferences file, so that you simply overwrite the preferences file if needed. That way you won´t have to re-adjust your preferences in Photoshop after a Reset.

Is one of your tools behaving strangely — or not the way you expect — in Photoshop?
For every tool in Photoshop's Tool Box, the user may choose to fully reset JUST that tool to its default settings. To do this, look up to the Options Bar. On the far left side you will see a button which displays an icon of the currently selected tool. This is the Tool Preset picker. Right-click on this button, and you will see two entries:
    Reset Tool
    Reset All Tools
The first thing to try when a tool is not acting like you expect it should is to apply the command "Reset Tool" from this menu. Often this will cure a problem, and by starting your Photoshop troubleshooting with this procedure you aren't resetting Photoshop's entire behavior and environment to factory default in a wholesale manner. Instead, you're just getting that particular tool back to its default settings, leaving the rest of Photoshop's settings alone.
The second option would be more appropriate in a classroom setting, to get a "fresh version of Photoshop", rather than for troubleshooting Photoshop issues.
If this doesn't cure the problem you're having, then you may need to move on to deleting/resetting all of your Photoshop preferences to factory default.

  • Windows 8 - Resetting InDesign preferences

    Hi
I'm used to resetting InDesign (another CS products) using Shift+Ctrl+Alt. However, having recently changed to Windows 8, this doesn't seem to work. I can still reset the preferences manually and clear the recently used items list manually but not by using the keyboard cmds when launching the program.
Anyone any ideas how to achieve this.
    Thanks
    George

At what point are your pressing Shift+Alt+Ctrl. I've tried on the Metro Screen and on the exe file itself but I don't get the Delete InDesign Preferences File option.
The way I do is to press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT before clicking on the launch Icon.  This is what I get if I do it that way:
    Good luck.

  • Constantly resetting Cs2 Preferences

I would like to know why I have to reset Photoshop Cs2 preferences often.  Every week the brushes doesn't work, so I have to press Ctrl, Alt and Shift.  I went into the nine preferences box and reset everything.  I also did my color settings and save the settings.  Is there a way that I can stop resetting the preferences so often?. Thank you.
    Gerald Sr.

    Gerald,
It may not make much difference at this time of the year, but you should repost in the Photoshop Windows forum, http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop/photoshop_windows.
Never going there myself, I will venture to add the following although it is completely out of place, or should I say forum:
The cause is probably Windows corrupting one or more preference files while saving them when you close down.
Instead of using the Ctrl+Alt+Shift which will wipe out the preferences, including those you wish to keep, you can probably save them for later use by performing the Photoshop equivalent to what is described here for illustrator, namely to Move the folder. I believe the folder is called Adobe Photoshop CS2 Settings, and you may search for it in the same way (including hidden files and folders); you may learn the right name in the forum if I am wrong.
Good luck over there, and Happy New Year.

  • Recently upgraded Quicktime now some videos that I have produced as16:9 are displayed as 4:3. any ideas?

Recently upgraded Quicktime now some but not all videos that I have produced as16:9 are displayed as 4:3. any ideas?
The usual problem is the creation of an anamorphic 16:9 file and either losing the internal flag/aspect settings or displaying the file on a media player that does not correctly use the display information embedded in the file. Physically splitting/trimming anamorphic source files in iMovie rather than splitting/trimming the source content by reference can throw away the anamorphic settings/flag when the content is re-written to the hard drive, incorrectly creating a non-anamorphic file from an anamorphic source, or incorrectly creating an anamorphic file from a non-anamorphic source can all produce your problem. To know what is happening, you will either have to provide more details regarding your workflow or provide an sample clip for examination. In some cases, depending on the video compression format involved and the target media player, the problem can be fixed without having to re-compress the file.

  • I cannot use iTunes because I cannot upgrade quicktime

Apple has deviously inflicted more consternation that I thought possible upon me: I just want to use iTunes on my MacBook Pro I have had for a little over a year, and all of a sudden iTunes won't open.
    I get this message:
iTunes requires QuickTime 7.5.5 or later.
and it tells me to upgrade quicktime, i download the upgrade, attempt to install it, and it tells me the installation failed due to damaged source file. But the source file is what I am downloading from Apple, who are really screwing me here (general inferiority of their products aside!) I have tried in vain to find online support, and have called Apple for support twice now, to say which I did not receive would be an understatement. The first guy told me he would e-mail simple steps to fix the problem -- I never got an email. I called again and a different woman told me it would be a violation of policy for her to email me any such help without my serial number, which I didn't have because I was not at home and anyhow the serial number isn't even listed under "About this Mac", furthermore all I wanted was assistance with a damaged file that they are offering for free download to the public.
Finally the woman told me I should download the latest version of iTunes and that would take care of it, giving me the impression that the newly installed iTunes would contain the requisite version of QuickTime, but this was not the case and now I have the new version of iTunes but it still will not open.
Please help me, I just want to use iTunes!

Go to Applications > Utilities, launch *Disk Utility*.
Select your HD, select First Aid, run *Repair Disk Permissions*.
If hat does not fix it, boot from your Install DVD, run Disk Utility then *Repair Disk*.

Happy Holidays to all.  I'm using Adobe's Classroom in a Book.  On page 12, the prompter to reset default preferences doesn't pop up, so is there another way to reset?  Thankye.

You can manually delete the prefs file. It should be in Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings.
The file in that folder is called:Adobe Photoshop 5 Prefs.psp".

  • Upgrading QuickTime to QuickTime Pro

Is it impossible to upgrade QuickTime to QuickTime Pro after having installed Final Cut Pro? I tried but failed. Apple said my registration was invalid. Should I uninstall Final Cut Pro and try again?

I have Final Cut Pro HD (4.5) but never upgraded QuickTime with the supplied serial number. Now that I have purchased Final Cut Studio (Upgrade from Production Suite), I want to make sure everything of 4.5 is fully installed. Since this upgrade version supposes that I already have QuickTime Pro, I believe installing in will not automatically unlocks QT Pro 7, rite?

  • Since upgrade Quicktime won't play ".qtl" files

I got the notice a few months ago that I needed to upgrade Quicktime, so I did and am now running it at 7.1.6. However, since the upgrade, I can't play any of Quicktime's HD trailers or any movie files ending in ".qtl". ".mov", ".mp4" and others work fine, just not ".qtl". Also, every time I try to play a trailer from Apple's QT Trailer page, the page just uploads with "?" over the QT icon. Whether I'm trying to play a HD trailer or not, the result is the same. Any ideas?

The Yahoo pages make for lousy viewing. The SD files have been converted to Flash Video (.flv) and the HD versions use the QuickTime Media Link format.
I tested the Silver Surfer pages and had mixed results. The "exclusive" version .qtl file worked (after closing the first window opened and a double click on the downloaded .qtl file). The "Theatrical Trailer" HD versions failed to load any content.
The .qtl files are just simple text files (XML) and you can view them in any text editor to extract the "real" URL to the media. Copy all of the text in the quote marks and you'll get a URL that looks like this:
    http://playlist.yahoo.com/makeplaylist.dll?sid=37986432&embedded=yes&t=mov&br=27 00&s=0&start=0&end=&afr=0&nodeid=2964002&d=35&tz=&pg=NTYzMDg4MDQ1NDY2YzkwMG&auth id=&sl=35&so=%252FYahoo%252FMovies%252FClips%252FFantastic%2BFour%2BRise%2BOf%2B The%2BSilver%2BSurfer%252Fwheelsequence%2528HD%2529&tcode=&sdm=web&pt=rd
Sorry for the huge URL. Blame it on Yahoo. (Copy do not click all of the text above)
Paste that in the Open URL feature of QuickTime Player and wait for the file to download.

If you only have one disk (non partitioned), then you can't uncheck the
scratch disk in the photoshop preferences.
You need to have a scratch disk enabled in photoshop or photoshop wouldn't
work very well, if at all.
