Upgrading RAM and drive in a 17 inch1.67 GHz Powerbook G4
Hi all, I have a 17 inch PowerBook G4 running a 1.67 GHz processor and have 2 gig RAM inserted. I am an audio professional and purchased the system from a specialist digital recording equipment firm in the UK when I made the changeover from analogue to digital recording. At the time I got the machine as highly spec'd as possible.
I have been reading about the new SSD's and am about to purchase either a new iMac or Mac Pro but I would like to upgrade the powerbook and have it as a backup for emergencies.
I would be grateful if some of you could give me advice on the following:
1) Is is possible for me to increase the PowerBook's RAM higher than the 2 gig I am running at the minute?
2) Will my PowerBook acccept a SSD?
3) If I purchase a standard configuration i7 hyper threading/turbocharged 27 inch new generation iMac is it very difficult to install a second SSD in it and to and fit additional RAM myself. I have read somewhere that the iMacs are not so easy to upgrade at home?
I look forward to your views!
Thanks,
Eugene

Welcome!
1) Your are already at Max RAM. 2G is already above the "published" max at the time the computer was made. Newer compatible modules got you to 2G but you can't go farther. I think the memory controller on the logic board limits the max to 2G.
2) I believe all SSD drives are SATA and the PowerBook has only the older PATA interface for drives. That cannot be upgraded internally. The only option is to go external with an eSATA card that fits in your cardbus slot like this one:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Firmtek/SATA1SM2/
The page I linked says a drive connected to that card will NOT be bootable.
3) Probably best to ask about putting an extra drive inside an iMac in the Intel iMac forums here:
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=189
However, I've never heard of an iMac with a spare drive bay.

Upgrading RAM and SSD on MacBook Pro 15" mid 2009
Hey,
I want to upgrade RAM and SSD on my macbook pro, identifier 5,3, and I want to make sure the parts I picked will be compatible with my Macbook.
I'm specifically not sure about its support of 512GB.
I thought about RAM:

SSD:

Thanks!" I have also created a back up on Time Machine (I think I did)."
Check this out:
http://macintoshhowto.com/repair/back-up-computer.html
Once you think you've done it correctly restart and hold down the option key or go to "System Preferences" under the Apple and look at "Startup Disk".
That will tell which Disks are bootable.
Now about that Crucial drive:
http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Crucial-SSDs/512GB-M4-and-2009-Macbook-Pro/td-p/7805 6
It's not clear to me that this issue was resolved. The last post goes nowhere!
I always use OWC:

Just did two including this MacBook Pro early 2011 13" and a 2012 Mini. Total no-brainer! The way I like it. -
Upgrading ram and harddrive before turning on macbook for the first time?
Hello, I'm totally new to the world of Macs. I am for sure going to purchase a Macbook, but I feel it might be better to upgrade ram and harddrive through third party. I have never upgraded ram or a harddrive, but it seems easy enough after watching the video at macworld and reading instructions. My question is:
Should I install the ram and harddrive before I turn on the macbook for the first time? Would this make things any easier? Would this be a bad thing to do?
I plan on ordering both the macbook and the ram and harddrive on the same day. Which is basically why I was wondering.
Thank you!Welcome to the discussions!
I agree fully with Ned. You will want to power it up and run the setup and even do your data transfer and maybe even install a program or two before doing any upgrades at all.
Why?
Updating the OS tests your Airport or ethernet connection.
Migrating data over by FireWire or USB tests those connections.
Installing programs from CD will test out the CD drive.
You will also get a feel for the baseline performance and have something to compare it to once you do those upgrades. -
Upgrading RAM and SSD on hp pavilion g6 2005ax
Hey guys,
I have hp pavilion 2005 ax laptop i want to upgrade ram and SSD i have one slot unused i want to know which ram should i go with.
Corsair DDR3 8 GB
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 4 GB
or if there is any other ram please provide me detail.
Also this is my cpu-z report
will this both ram will work at 1600mhz and compatible with my board ?
Should i add one ram to existing or replace it with two ?
what is max size i can upgrade for RAM ?
Will this SSD would be compatible?
Samsunng evo 840
Crucial MX100
i am guessing both will be compatible with my laptop but the main problem is ram and it's frequency i can't seems to find a way.
Please help.Hi,
Your machine currently has 4Gb of RAM:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c03325481
It supports 8Gb max. CPU-Z (SPD tab) should show you RAM information including brand. You can work out what do you need using that information. My suggestion: use information on the SPD tab INCLUDING brand.
Regards.

Hello,
I have a HP Pavilion ZT3280us. I was looking to upgrade the RAM. I found out that it can take up to 2GB (2x1GB RAM). I was looking for the two places to install them but only noticed one place (the place that says RAM). Does anyone know where the second place is located?
Second question- I am looking to upgrade the hard drive with something larger than 80GB. Does anyone know what is the max hard drive I can use that will be compatible with the computer?
Thanks in advance for any help!

picture is worth a thousand
As far as the hard drive, it uses the older PATA drives and is based on a mobile Pentium 4 platform. Odds are it will accept any sized hard drive you can buy but it is of the age where there might be a BIOS limit. If there is, it means you cannot use a drive in excess of 120 gigs. However, I would go ahead and use a bigger one because I am about 98% sure it is new enough not to have a size limit.
Intel does have some tools on its website that let you check compatibility with LBA48 (allows larger hard drives) if you are concerned.

Upgraded RAM and Changed HD to SSD: Computer Crashing
Hi guys, I have a 2013 MBP that I recently upgraded with 16 gigs of RAM and an SSD. Both pieces of hardware, I was careful to make sure were compatible with my computer. Ever since installing them, though, I have been experiencing consistent crashing that seems to happen most regularly when the computer awakes from sleep mode or when I unplug or plug in the charger. I ran a memtest, and it stated everything was fine. Debugged the hd.
This is the error report that I am receiving after recovering from a crash:
Any chance I could get some help with this issue? Thanks for reading guys!

If not, then the SSD should be substituted for the original HDD. Kernel panics are often attributable to hardware issues.
Also run an Apple hardware Test which may provide a clue.

Newbie Question! Upgrading Ram and Memory in Macbook Pro 2.2 Ghz
Hi!
I am a new Mac user. I started out as an apple user with my iphone 3 years ago and have recently went to Macbook and will never go back to PC. Anyway,
I need to upgrade my RAM from 2 to 4 GB.
1. What is the best or better RAM to use? Crucial?
2. Please advise on steps to do so.
Also, I need to upgrade my hard drive memory as I have 150 GB used and only 9 GB free per Istat.
1. Am I able to upgrade the memory for this?
Thank You any and all!!Is this the right hard drive? Decent hard drive?

Info on upgrading RAM and Hard Disk on late-2011 Macbook Pro
Hello everyone,
I would like some info from anyone regarding upgrading RAM on my macbook pro (13inch, late 2011 model) from 4GB to 8GB. Will the notebok support 8GB and if so, is it something that you can do yourself or should it be taken to an Apple store ?
Also, my notebook currently has a 320GB hard-disk drive, that I would like to swap for a 320GB/480GB SSD. Again, which models are compatible with my notebook, and whether I can swap it out myself, or should I let an Apple technician at the store do it for me?
Thanks and regards to all ..Yes. You can upgrade that machine to 8 GB. I have the same machine. I think you can do 16 GB but the RAM is quite a bit more money. You can do it yourself with a small enough screwdriver. I doubt the Apple Store would install 3rd party RAM and you don't want to pay Apple prices for it.
A hard drive is about the same. Once you open the case, you can replace both. I suggest OWC. They have the tools, instructions, the RAM, the hard drives, etc. They even sell external enclosure kits so you can upgrade your internal drive and use the old drive an an external for archiving data. -
Upgrading RAM and adding a SSD to new 27 inch iMac?
Hi all, is it extremely difficult to upgrade the RAM and add a SDD in the new 27 inch i7 iMAC yourself? I have read somewhere that it is extremely difficult and can void warranty.
The new hyper threading/turbocharged 27 inch iMAC can have two drives one conventional and a SDD. But I think the bracket and connecting cable for the SDD is not in the casing unless the AppleStore fit the drive themselves as a customized purchase order.
I have been told by a guy who provides maintenance for mac and PC users in my area that it can work out less expensive to purchase a basic model mac form the apple store then upgrade it oneself making sure to use the proper compatible RAM, drives etc.
I am in the market for either a new generation 27 inch iMac or an 8 or 12 core new Mac Pro but if I thought it possible to upgrade the iMac I would purchase it for the time being as like most of us I am trying to keep spending down to a minimum to ride out this recession!!
I would appreciate all views.
Thanks,
EHi E
Ram is the only thing that is considered user upgradeable,
http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iMac_Mid2010UG.pdf
order the iMac with an SSD, and then upgrade the memory yourself with third party ram.

URGENT - upgrading ram and hard
Hi there,
I went in to a store to buy a macbook pro 15" with 2.4GHz CPU. I asked if I would be able to upgrade my har drive from 750GB SATA (as comes standard) to a 256 SSD later on. She answered "No, if you want a SSD hard you should get it from the factory and when you received it, you would not be able to upgrade your hard nor your RAM. So if you want a higher RAM you should customize your order now; so you better go with the 8GB RAM and the SSD ordered from Apple".
Now my question is: IS THAT RIGHT??? So does thatt mean becasue now that I've ordered an 8 GB RAM with a 128GB SSD I would not be able to upgrade my ram and Hard drive later???shahabz wrote:
Thanks for your reply mate
I had a look at this earlier but didn't know if I could upgrade it after I received it or not.
The other thing is the warranty; if I change the RAM and HD, would it void the warranty?
And also, the macsales shows the SSD's as 120 or 240 or 480 as oppose to 128, 256 and 512... any idea? or am I wrong?
The MBP comes with instructions for making those changes so it won't void your warranty unless you break something in the process. The SSD's sizes aren't anything to worry about; it's the price differences that matter most! -
Upgrading RAM and hardisk DV6265us
Hi
in my laptop dv6265us I want to upgrade RAM from 2GB to 4GB and hardisk from 160 GB to 500GB.
pleaae note the purpose of the same is to load SAP FICO practice version ...is't advisable and the other hardware will support the enhancement?Hello nilpavan,
Please take a look at this document, which provides the information you are requesting regarding upgrading your RAM. Regarding the hard drive upgrade, I would refer to your Maintenance and Service Guide and your HD/SDD manual, located here.
Please let me know if this helps.
Good luck!

Upgrading RAM and Flash Storage for higher capacity
If I purchase a MacBook Pro with Retina Display with 8GB or RAM and 256GB Flash Drive, can I later upgrade the RAM and Flash Drive for higher capacity?
Just to clarify...
If I were to purchase a "regular" MacBook Pro (non-"retina", DVD drive, FireWire port, etc.) and seek aftermarket options for...
(1: replacing the main RAM with 16 gigabytes of RAM (I understand that the newest "regular" MBP is limited to a BTO option of only 8 GB.)
and
(2: replacing the hard drive with a larger-capacity aftermarket Solid State Drive, preferably one with a capacity of either 768 gigabytes or 1 terabyte.
Do such aftermarket options exist for the newest "regular" MacBook Pro? Can this model handle 16 GB of RAM? If there are aftermarket kits available, who installs them? -
E45T-B4106 Upgrading RAM and HD
Can someone provide steps and pictures as to how to do this and what sort of RAM should I use?
For a bit over $600, you could upgrade your particular MBP to 16GB of RAM and a 480 GB SSD and get a remarkable increase in speed. A new MBP would cost about $1,400 more and that's with a maximum of 8 GB of RAM. You'd get a longer warranty with AppleCare with the new one (for another $250). You also have a graphics processor on yours but a new 13" MBP has only the built-in graphics. The only thing I'd miss is the USB 3.0 ports vs the USB 2.0 ports you have.
Upgrading your current Mac sounds like a speedy and economical choice. -
17in upgrading ram and solid state
I have a quick question, when I bought my 15in Macbook pro I ordered it with 2gb ran and changed it out to 4gb I bought off Newegg saved about 120 bucks.
I'm looking at a new 17in full maxed, but I noticed I could leave it with the 4gb of ram and 320gb Sata drive then go purchase them off Newegg and save myself about 1,000 dollars.
here is the ram I was looking at getting
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146783
here is the solid state hard drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820161317
I just wanted to make sure if I get the Sata 320gb I'll be able to replace it with this Solid State without any issues.
Finally how hard is it to open up the new Unibody 17in to swap out the HD and Ram?
ThanksThat RAM is for a Mac Pro tower, not a MacBook Pro. 8GB of RAM for the 17-inch MacBook Pro is still very expensive, but here are a few places where you can get it:
