Upgrading ram and harddrive before turning on macbook for the first time?

Hello, I'm totally new to the world of Macs. I am for sure going to purchase a Macbook, but I feel it might be better to upgrade ram and harddrive through third party. I have never upgraded ram or a harddrive, but it seems easy enough after watching the video at macworld and reading instructions. My question is:
Should I install the ram and harddrive before I turn on the macbook for the first time? Would this make things any easier? Would this be a bad thing to do?
I plan on ordering both the macbook and the ram and harddrive on the same day. Which is basically why I was wondering.
Thank you!

Welcome to the discussions!
I agree fully with Ned. You will want to power it up and run the setup and even do your data transfer and maybe even install a program or two before doing any upgrades at all.
Why?
Updating the OS tests your Airport or ethernet connection.
Migrating data over by FireWire or USB tests those connections.
Installing programs from CD will test out the CD drive.
You will also get a feel for the baseline performance and have something to compare it to once you do those upgrades.

Hey folks, I just connected my iphone4 to my macbook for the first time and it restord it to the previosu settings from my old iphone? Is there a way to reverse this??!!!

If you want it to go back to essentially Out of Box Factory Settings then you will want to just select the 'Restore' option from the Summary Screen within iTunes. You will be prompted to Restore from Backup or Restore as New, in this case you will want to restore as new.
If you have previous settings you will need to see if they were backed up correctly before syncing, you can check this in Preferences -> Devices -> Backups and look at the list of backups to see if one coincides with your iPhone 4. If not, then there will be no settings to restore to other than the previously connected iPhone or back to Factory settings.

I updated my iphone 5 to  ios 7 two days ago and I synced with my computer for the first time yesterday. Most of my calendar appointments and events were wiped off my phone but are still on the computer. I use outlook 2010 and a pc running windows 7. Rebooting the phone and the computer failed to remedy the calendar sync problem.

Easy solution for restoring lost calendar informaiton, thank goodness.  On your iPhone, go to settings, then to iCloud.  If your Calendar selection is turned off,  turn it on.  Your info should restore.  If your Calendar selection is turned on, then turn it off.  Choose to save calendars when asked.  After it shuts the Calendar off, turn it back on.  Your info should be restored.
Thank you to Apple support for walking me through this.  Shame on you Apple for not just telling people about this easy fix rather than making us go through all of this pain and worry.

If you manually open iPhoto do you not see the photos?
    Maybe here:
iOS: Unable to import photos or device not recognized as a camera
Yu are trying to impoort photos taken by or saved to the iPod, right? If the photos were synced to the iPod then iPhot does not work.

I have windows and I have synced my ipad for the first time.  I'm at step 6 of 6 Downloading Safari safe browsing data. I have been here at this step going on 2 hours.  Is this normal or is something wrong.

Lyrics aren't supported in the Music app on iOS 5 on the iPad. These are user-to-user forums, they are not monitored by Apple (there are too many forums/threads/messages for that to happen). If you want to leave feedback for Apple then you can do so here : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

  • It foze five minutes after turning it on for the first time.

so i got home today, got my iPod, and i was all excited
so i carefully took it out of the box, and i pressed the center button and it turned on. it did the language//clock thing, as always, and then it froze. it is stuck on the menu, where it says "SHUFFLE SONGS" and the backlight won't even turn on, and i've beenm trying for thirty minutes to fix it, and i don't know what to do.
I plugged it in first, and then i read the directions [ i know worst moment of my life ugh ] and uploaded the cd and downloaded everything, and it still wont work. it says the USB 2 is malfunctioning, and it won't connect. it doesn't even detect the ipod

Have you tried holding down the 'Menu' and 'Select' down to reset it?

  • Importing and organizing photo files lightroom 5 for the first time. Clean up hard drive photo files

I have a trial version of lightroom 5 and would like once and forall to bring some order to both my hard drives and lightroom 5 collection. Some photos in lightroom 5 seem to have lost their path. some are in Window 7 folders and others are in Elements 9. I have made back up copies of some folders and would like to have a more systematic approach to back them up from now on. I have a NAS (network access storage) device and an extra hard drive I thought it would be best to use my laptop as the primary working memory for my photo files as it would be faster than working with the NAS or external, and then back everything up to the NAS and external. I see the main challenge as  consolidating all of the files and whereever possible preserving the ratings I have given photos; I would like to eliminate duplicats. on both the hard drive and in lightroom. i have looked at one of the initial training vidios on the 'library' section of adobe help and the presenter talked of two methods of importing photos,. the first and the one I think I will use going forward is to open lightroom and import from the sd card directly as opposed to having Windows 7 import and then having lightroom find them. If someone kows of a comprehensive list of instructions to follow to clean up my hard drives that would be extremly helpful? Peter

I doubt there is a list of instructions to clean up a hard drive, because every starting sitaution is different, and your "clean" is probably a lot different than my "clean".
But let's clear up a few things first. Based on your writing, it seems like you think you have photos stored in PSE and photos stored in LR. This is not correct. Neither of these programs store your photos. All of your photos are on your hard disk, in folders, somewhere.
With regards to missing photos in Lightroom, when you move or rename photos and folders OUTSIDE of Lightroom, Lightroom no longer knows where they are, and reports them as missing. To fix it, see: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm Related to this, you don't want to "clean up" things in Windows and also "clean things" up in Lightroom. Instead, once you import photos into Lightroom, you should do all photo management in Lightroom, not Windows, otherwise you will just be creating more missing files.
With regards to duplicates, Lightroom has some tools to detect duplicates. It will try to prevent duplicates on import, and if you do manage to import duplicates, you can use the "AutoStack by Capture Time" to try to find additional duplicates. But if those don't work, then you're pretty much on your own.
With regards to putting photos on your laptop to work on them rather than your external HD, I think you will find that this provides a tiny fraction of a second improvement in speed which you may not even notice, which will be offset by the time you spend moving photos to somewhere else when you are done. So, just put the photos in their final destination folder on your external HD or NAS, and don't bother moving them to the internal HD.
Which brings up another point. Once you have accomplished this "clean up", your workflow should be to put the photos in one place, and then don't move them! (Exception: running out of space on disk, or moving to a new disk/computer) Make your life as simple as possible.
One last point: strongly consider using keywords and other metadata to achieve organization, instead of moving photos/folders from here to there to achieve organization. These tools in Lightroom give you ability to organize in much more powerful and flexible organization than anything you can do by moving photos/folders from here to there. (Side note: if you want all photos in some sort of centralized location because it meets your storage needs, then do that because it meets your storage needs. Within that collection of photos in a centralized location, use keywords and other metadata to achieve organization and for searching)

  • Adobe organizer hangs and does respond when importing files for the first time?Adobe organizer hangs and does respond when importing files for the first time?

Help!!  This is crazy. Organizer stops at 17% and freezes.  I can't import my iPhoto or picture files. Help please!

For reference: The computer as configured just like the other systems we have...from executing the file to lockup is about 17 seconds...then about 3 minutes of lockup time before it finishes loading.
With the Antivirus/firewall completely disabled,...from executing to lockup is about 10 seconds, then lockup is about 45 seconds. (But it still happens)
With Antivirus/firewall on and Escript.api removed from the plugins folder, No delay, 2 seconds to the file load (but then without the editable fields)

  • I just turned on Match for the first time. One of my playlists now has over 1,000 duplicate songs?

Everything seemed fine. Now when I click the "Songs" tab it shows about 2,200 songs and when I click the "playlist" tab and look my main playlist (I only have one right now) its showing over 3,700 songs so there's about 1,400 duplicates. What's going on?

Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from her old compouter to /Music/ in her account on this new computer.

  • Is it okay to use your new iPod Touch before charging it for the first time? I did and then listened to it while charging and syncing. Thanks

Just got the 5G Touch. I turned it on and was using the camera and stuff before I charged it for the first time. Then while charging, I listened to the music I was syncing through the speakers. This okay? I remember reading to always charge full before ever doing anything on them. Doesnt say anything in the startup manual though.
    Thanks guys.

Should be OK. Just make sure that the iPod is charging.

  • I turned on my new imac for the first time and it is making a loud fan noise please help

I just got a new computer and when I turned it on for the first time it started making a loud fan noise. the noise seems like it is coming from the back speaker. and it does not make the noise on sleep mode.

Connect the iPad to a USB 2.0 port your computer with the cable and iTunes should launch and it will take you through the process step by step.
I assume that your computer meets the requirements and that you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer.

  • When I turned on my computer this morning a heard a fan go on for the first time.  Is this something I should be concerned about,  I am sure I have never heard it before.

When I turned on my computer this morning, a fan like noise and air came out of the back of the computer.  I have never heard this before.  Should I be concerned, and why am I hearing this for the first time?

I don't believe it is cause for concern, but I would perform a System Management Controller reset:

    From the above:
    Additional Information
The System Management Controller (SMC) is responsible for many low-level functions on Intel-based Macs. These functions include:
Responding to presses of the power button
Responding to display lid opening and closing on portable Macs
    Battery management
    Thermal management

  • I recently built a new windows PC for the first time. My (new) wife and I both have itunes accounts, which we would like to use under different windows accounts on same PC. However, when I try to download my wife's songs it gives me an error.

I am recently married to a wonderful woman and just built a windows PC for the first time. The idea was that we would (sorta) both be able to get a new computer out of it as we would each have a different account under windows. One of the first tasks was to migrate over our iTunes libraries. I did mine with no problem, but now that I'm try to do hers, I'm getting an error message saying "if you download past purchases with your Apple ID, you cannot auto-download or download purchases with a different Apple ID for 90 days."
What's the best solution for this? I want my wife to be able to use the new computer under her windows account just like it's her new computer, to the extent possible. I don't want our two iTunes accounts to be fighting each other and causing problems because they are on the same physical machine. What to do? Surely this can't be the first time this has happened - where two people each want to have their own iTunes account on the same computer.
This is the latest version of iTunes (12.0.1.26) running on Windows 8.1.

  • I turned on my Macbook pro for the first time and the mouse is frozen

I turned on my Macbook pro for the first time and the mouse is frozen since the first screen. I did the start up, but using the comands on the keyboard. I think the laptop is configured to blind people. I just got at the desktop, but the mouse is frozen.

If this is a new machine, you have 14 days to return the machine for an exchange or a full refund. Your trackpad should work out of the box and what you're seeing onscreen may very well be settings for the partially sighted.
