Upgrading RAM - Can I mixmatch?

Hi, I bought a new MacBook Pro recently, and it has 4GB of RAM.  I'm interested in upgrading it to 8GB, with this set here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002YUF8ZG/ref=as_li_ss_til?tag=thepartim-20&camp=21338 1&creative=390973&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=B002YUF8ZG&adid=1YDQMBA6EB6JAD1K9S7N
My question is, is it necessary to buy 8GB of new RAM and completely replace the stock RAM, or can I just buy 4GB of new RAM and add it on to the current 4GB?
Thanks

Oh okay, I didn't realize there were 2x2GB sticks in there.
Thanks

could the launch agents failing slow the computer or they just don't work. I mean I am willing to upgrade ram but not if there is good chance it won't change speed much. Also to downgrade is it necessary to format the hard drive?

  • How much RAM can upgrade my Powerbook G4 with and where can I buy it?

I would like to increase the speed/processing power of my Powerbook G4. Any advice on the following appreciated:
    1) What is the max RAM I can put into it? There seem to be problems logged on this discussion forum at 2GB by some users?
    2) Where can I buy compatible RAM - it is no longer available on the Apple store (neither UK where I live nor US)?
    3) are there any other upgrades I can make to speed up my Powerbook?
    My current Powerbook details are:
    Machine Name: PowerBook G4 15"
    Machine Model: PowerBook5,2
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 768 MB - DDR SDRAM
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.7.1f1
Graphics - ATI Mobility Radeon 9600
    Many thanks
    Mark

Hi, Mark. Your Powerbook can use up to 2GB of RAM, and there is no increased risk of trouble when using the maximum as long as the RAM used is suitable. Suitable RAM can be ordered from scores of online vendors. I don't know what the best sources in the UK might be, but I suggest that you look for Samsung, Crucial, or Hynix branded RAM from a vendor whose web site explicitly advertises it as compatible with Aluminum Powerbook G4s.

You have got a Mid 2010 13-inch MacBook Pro, and it supports up to 16 GB of RAM, so you can install 8 GB of RAM. You can buy more memory at OWC or Crucial

  • Can I upgrade Ram on my 1G iMac?

I have an iMac running OS X 10.6.8 with a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM...and now have both an iTouch and an iPad2 using iCloud...would like to use iCloud with my desktop machine also but understand I need to upgrade to Lion...when I try to get Lion I get a message that I must have 2GB Ram...can I upgrade Ram on this machine?

Keep in mind that this machine can only address approx. 3.2 GB of RAM (not the full 4 GB) - I know; I used to have the same machine. Mine was running well; however, I tend to do a lot of graphics work and editing video, and it was really slow with that. Lion is a bit of a memory hog; although the minimum states 2 GB, you will not be happy with that - 4 GB is about the minimum for Lion to perform reasonably well. However, if you do use the machine for graphics, pics, movies, videos, etc. it'll be slow going on 3 GB. Your machine is about 5 years old, right? You might want to consider waiting a bit with the iCloud - especially since most of its' functions are for iDevices - not a Mac - until you decide to upgrade to a newer, more powerful Mac. Some of the functions are only accessible via icloud.com on a Mac - if you will search for "icloud on a Mac" for instance in these forums, you might want to read some of the threads.
    Here is one example:

  • Can't upgrade RAM on new Macbook Pros?

I'm preparing to buy a new Macbook Pro, and have been told that the RAM that comes with the book is the RAM you get. No upgrade possible because the RAM modules are soldered into place. Is that so? I've always upgraded our computers to the max. Thanks in advance.

    That is indeed so.
There still appears to be one model (13" Mid 2012) that is still available that has upgradable RAM.

  • Upgrading RAM,MBP 2.26 Intel Core 2 Duo can it handle

I have the following MBP and it currently has a two GB RAM and of lately its been running really really slow, I saw this at the activity monitor and it says only 60MB as free memory (is this whats causing the slow down)
How much RAM can my MB handle and any suggestions on which to buy.

Only the Mac mini 2011 model can support the Thunderbolt display, the 2010 model cannot.
In terms of a display - resolution, colour, size, etc. there is effectively no difference between the Thunderbolt and previous Mini Displayport Cinema Display. The difference is the connection.
Thunderbolt allows running both data and the screen over the same single cable. It also allows daisy-chaining to more devices including a second screen, something Displayport cannot do.
Both the 2010 and 2011 models support Lion.
You could consider selling the 2010 model and then getting a 2011 model.

  • HELP: How much RAM can my G4 hold?

Hey, quick thanks up front to anyone who answers this.
I've got an iBook G4 that I bought in 2004. It's a 1Ghz G4 with a 60gig hard drive. When I bought it from MacMall, I got a free RAM upgrade, and as such up until about a month ago, it had 640MB of RAM. Then without warning the upgrade RAM died. I was left running with the 128MB that were built in. You should try running Dashboard on 128Megs... It's ****. I have since taken the bad RAM out, and am looking into replacing it/upgrading so I have 1GB of RAM. Now here's the thing: When I went to the Apple specs page, it said that my computer could only have a maximum of 640Megs of RAM. But when I look at the slot, it seems to match the same size as for the 1GB cards. How much can I really hold? I would like to be able to go to 1GB.
    Thanks for any help.

iBook G4, 1Ghz, 128MB Built in, 60GB Hard Drive, Combo Drive, Tiger   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Had Ram Upgrade Previously

Your computer will accept a 1GB module. This is not stated on Apple's specifications page because 1GB modules were not available when that iBook first came out, and the specifications were not updated afterwards.

  • How much ram can my iMac take?

Hi all, just bought a iMac a few days ago and I'm just wondering how much ram can it take as I want to upgrade it. It didnt come with a manual, so I don't know.
    Here's the spec so far
    Early 2008 20"
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
Thanks for any help in advance

There are two answers: the official Apple answer and the "you're on your own" answer.
1 - For the official iMac max RAM, see iMac Memory specifications and upgrades
2 - For the "your're on your own" answer, everymac.com has a list of the Actual Maximum RAM you can put in every model Mac.  In many cases this is more than the official maximum RAM.
After deciding how much RAM you want to put in your iMac, I suggest going to Crucial.com and use the memory advisor or system scanner to see what RAM modules are compatible with your iMac.

    A 15" mid-2009 MBP RAM specifications are: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
As has been pointed out, OWC is an excellent source for Mac compatible RAM.  Crucial is another first rate source for Mac RAM.  RAM from either vendor will work just as well as any purchased from Apple with the bonus of being less expensive and having a lifetime guarantee.
    Ciao.

  • Will upgrading ram improve speed in Mac and windows (VMware fusion)?

I Am using VMware fusion for music production and that program requires a lot of workspace. I have a MacBook Pro 4gb ram and when I turn VMware on it goes to 2 gb ram in Mac and 2 gb ram in windows. My Mac speed is normal when VMware fusion is turned off but when I turn it on my Mac is very slow. Will upgrading ram improve speed in mac and also in windows (windows is also very slow)
Btw my english isn't very good

Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM hungry.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.
In your case it will most likely help. You should plan on at least 8 GBs or more, depending upon what your model supports.
