Upgrading RAM doesn't seem to be possible

I have a 2-month-old Core 2 Duo which I purchased with 2GB, because this eejit didn't read the specs properly and didn't realise this was 2x1GB chips. Now my 2G5 has suffered terminal death, I am using the MBP as my main system and, as such, would like to maximise the RAM. However, I seem to be at an impasse. I cannot find a single 2GB module anywhere (I'm in the UK and I don't have a credit card so ordering from abroad isn't possible). If I'd ordered it with 1GB, then I could have upgraded it to 2, that wouldn't have been a problem, but I cannot upgrade to 3.
Incidentally, could someone with the technical knowledge about these things, please enlighten me as to why the slots are asymmetrical. Surely, if the RAM in these things has to be installed in matched pairs, then the maximum ought to be 1, 2 or 4, not 3.
I wish I'd saved up a little longer and ordered it with 3 from the outset! Gah!
Why does Apple do this to us? Either ship the damned thing with a single 2GB module, or allow it to be upgraded with a single 2GB module. Either that, or set the maximum at 4 and sell a 4GB (2x2GB) kit!
So does anyone know of anywhere retailing a single 2GB module, or am I stuck with 2GB?
btw, I wish there were UK-specific forums, as I know that the majority of posters here are (probably) North American.
Yours, frustrated,
Sarah

MacBook Pro 17" Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

please enlighten me as to why the slots are asymmetrical.
It's because of the Intel chipset used in the MBP C2D used particular memory addresses that come into conflict if you have 4GB memory installed. Even though you can actaully install 4GB (2 x 2GB) RAM you will only ever get around 3.2GB of that. So, to stop the "where did all my expensive RAM go" questions, Apple just limits you to 3GB. Which I think is fair enough.
As for being assymetrical, the MBPs do not suffer from the same performnace issues as the MBs. Most because it the integrated graphics processor that requires the symmetrical RAM. In the MBP there is dedicated VRAM so this is of no importance.
Why does Apple do this to us?
They didn't… as you said yourself, you didn't quite read it right. While maybe Apple could have made it clearer all the information was all there in front of you.
Either ship the damned thing with a single 2GB module
This would be a good CTO option for them to offer although I think they don't simply due to the short supplies of the 2GB SODIMMs.
So does anyone know of anywhere retailing a single 2GB module, or am I stuck with 2GB?
While Enthanee recommended that you go with Apple, had she read it correctly should would have noticed that Apple only sells 2GB RAM for the MBP C2D as 2 x 1GB SODIMMs. It's what you already have. Apple currently does NOT sell 2GB SODIMMs as a standalone product.
So, What I would recommend is that you try calling Crucial UK…
http://www.crucial.com/uk/
… and see what they can do for a credit card-less person like yourself for the Part Nº CT613260 (2GB SODIMM for the MBP C2D). Same goes for Kingston…
http://www.kingston.com/ukroot/
… although with these guys you'll probably have to call them to find a reseller near you that can order it for you. The part number you need here is KTA-MB667/2G.

  • Vista upgrade order doesn't seem to be correct

    Hi there!
The instructions in the PDF on the Toshiba Vista Upgrade site (http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/generic_content.jsp?service=UK&ID=2006-10-Vista-Express-Upgrade-UK) don't seem to be correct. I've bought a Portege M400 on the 2nd of November, therefore after the start of the upgrade program. I also have a Vista capable logo on the laptop and the model number is the one listed in the Vista eligible list and therefore suitable for an upgrade.
But the problem starts when I go to the website, which is listed in the upgrade instruction (it just says go http://upgradeweb.moduslink.com/Vista/ and follow the instructions).
    OK, so let's go:
    A) I go to http://upgradeweb.moduslink.com/Vista/
    B) I make sure everything is set to English and United Kingdom.
    C) It asks me if I have an Upgrade Redemption Form - which I do not have - so I choose "No" (as far as I know, these forms are mainly for retail versions eligible for an upgrade).
    D) I click on Vista
    E) An information page comes up, I click next
    F) Now it asks me to choose the reseller - which is weird as there are only some manufacturers as Lenovo listed (Toshiba is not). So I click on the button "My computer reseller is not listed".
    G) A message appears: "If your Computer Reseller is not listed, your OEM may have a direct offer for Windows Vista Upgrade Products. Please contact your OEM directly for further details."
That's it. So what am I supposed to do now? The OEM is Toshiba and Toshiba is not listed as the reseller (and actually, it asks for the reseller not the manufacturer) and according to the instruction on the Toshiba Vista Upgrade page, I just have to follow the instructions on moduslink.com - which ends in the result that I have to ask my OEM (Toshiba) for an upgrade. So it is kind of a circle - Toshiba sends me to moduslink and moduslink back to Toshiba.
And by the way, Toshiba only lists in the upgrade instructions the need to have a receipt that falls in the upgrade period, the document doesn't ask for anything else - so I doubt that I am missing anything.
So what am I supposed to do and how can I order my Vista upgrade?
    Thanks!
    Alex

I got mine from a small store in Edinburgh, so not even Dixons. But anyway, Toshiba is offering the upgrade program to all customers who bought their computer after the 26th. It doesn't say that it must be bought from the Toshiba online store or from any other specific shop - it just says you must have a receipt showing that you bought the laptop after the 26th. Therefore, we both should be eligible for an upgrade. And even if we would have bought the computer directly from Toshiba, the problem would still be the same as Toshiba is not listed there. I doubt that e.g. Lenovo is selling Toshiba laptops ;)
So please, could somebody from Toshiba check this?
    Regards
    Alexander

  • Upgraded internet, doesn't seem so

About 2 months ago we upgraded our internet from the 768kbps-1mbps to 1.5mbps to 3.0mbps. We recieved our new modem (6100g) to replace our old modem (6100). I hooked that up to the internet as soon as we got it. Internet runs fine.(Still have 768kbps)
Now two weeks ago a techician came by the house and upgraded our telephone wires for the new internet. He told us we would be able to update our internet without any help but if we did call in. We couldn't find out how to upgrade the internet so we called in. We told them we wanted help to upgrade our internet, they didn't help at all. THey just want to upgrade us to the $44 plan.
I don't have any idea what else to do from here. my internet speeds right now are 1184 Kbps / 448 Kbps well below the internet plan we are paying for. I have yet to see anything higher than this on the modem or speed tests.

Your line statistics seem to be good enough to handle speeds going up to 10Mbps. As it stands right now, Verizon really has two speed packages with many different speeds. The package you're on right now is pretty much their basic 400kbps-1Mbps package. You're already at the 1Mbps rate. The next package up, which would be that $30-44 package, would have speeds anywhere from 1.1Mbps to 15Mbps. What speed you get on that package is pretty much a giant gamble. If you're on a remote DSLAM, your speed is going to be stuck at 3Mbps. If you're coming out of the CO, your speeds will depend on if the CO was upgraded to support higher packages. If it was, you should get 7.1Mbps or if it's been upgraded even more recently, the 10Mbps provisioning rate.
Since you've mentioned already upgrading the package a little while ago, you'd need to get on the phone with Billing and see what the deal is with the provisioning.

Ever since my upgrade to lion 10.7.3, and iCloud, my macbook is running extremely slow. What can I do? It doesn't seem like my contacts are pushing through to the computer from iPhone.

Then your basic issues are: too little RAM, incompatible software, dysfunctional installation.
Add more RAM or kill as many programs that you use until the computer is running normally.
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps. Upgrade any old software.
    Reinstall OS X:

Hi,  I've just purchased and installed an upgrade from Lightroom 4 to 5.  It doesn't seem to handle raw files authored with a new Nikon D750 camera.  I spoke to the sales rep about this and he gave me a link to the 8.6 DNG converter page with instructions to download.  8.6 only works with Mac OS 10.7-10.9, according to the page.  I'm running Yosemite, Mac 10.10.  Please can you tell me my options?  Lightroom 4 worked beautifully with my older cameras' raw files so I would like to continue using the application.  What should I do?  How soon will Lightroom 5 be able to deal with raw files from a D750.  Many thanks, Adam.

Until the next version of Lightroom is released, you need to use the DNG Converter version 8.7RC to convert your RAW photos to DNG and then import the DNGs into Lightroom.

Have Ipod Touch 2nd Gen. 64 gig. I noticed that my music will not play alphabetically anymore. Don't know exactly when this occured. I checked all my settings so doesn't seem to be that.Apple no longer is upgrading this unit..I use windows XP but don't believe this is an issue since i have read posts saying this is not the problem..right now am converting my higher bit rate music to see if that changes anything. I also turned off my unit and the next thing am going to do is a restore if this doesn't work. Anyone find a fix for this yet? I also see that this is not a unique problem to Gen 2 units and is occuring on newer units as well..thank you all for any advise...

    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • I want pictures from each device in the cloud, but not on every other device. Possible? "iCloud Backup" alone doesn't seem to work....

My goal is to acheive 3 of the following things.:
Have all my apple devices sync pictures to the icloud *without* syncing the pictures on all the devices...so just one direction from device to cloud and not have all the devices insync from the cloud...... I don't want all the devices in sync, I just want the pictures protected in the cloud. To do this, I've tried to just turn on "icloud bacn-up" and not turn on "photo stream" to acheive this, but doesn't seem to work.
If #1 is possible, then I would like to sync the icloud with a folder on my PC using the icloud app for the PC. Not sure if I can have only the icloud PC sync and not have all the devices in sync?
If #1 and #2 could work, then I would sync the PC folder with my local storge.
end result would be all my photos save in the cloud and a safe copy my home in my local storage. I would have thought that most people would want to do this, but doens't seem so obvious to me as to how I can get it to work?
    Any help would be appreicated.
    thanks

You can't use iCloud as a safe place to store your photos when they are deleted from your devices.  iCloud designed to stream photos to your devices, and to back up photos currently on your your devices as part of your iCloud backups.  However, photo stream photos only remain in iCloud for 30 days, giving your devices enough time to download them.  And if you delete a photo stream photo from any of your devices, it is also deleted from iCloud and from all of your devices.  Furthermore, while camera roll photos are included in your backup, if you then delete the photos from your device and continue backing up, the backup containing the deleted photos will be overwritten by one that doesn't, and they will be lost.
If you want to save your photos, import them from the camera roll to your computer as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  Then you can delete them from your device.
If you would rather have a cloud-based place to store your photos, look into a service such as Dropbox.

  • Is it possible to upgrade RAM in MacbookAir 4,1?

Is it possible to upgrade RAM in MacbookAir 4,1 Late 2011, 2G to 4G?

MacBook Airs are designed with a purpose that differentiates them from the rest of the Macbook line. That is to place weight and size reduction at one of the highest of priorities. In doing so, compromises have to be made. Upgradeable memory takes up addional space, in that it requires acessability and a slot interface, bot of which would add both weight and dimensional size to accomodate it. By making the memory an integral part of the logicboard, the computer can be made thinner.
So, when you buy somthing of the MBA's form factor, you have to pay special attention to buying the computer with all the options available at time of purchase that you & the computer will ever need, where those components are not upgradeable for space and weight consideration.
The MacBook Air, despite the desire, is not just a shrunken MacBook Pro. Space and weight savings is of a higher priority than is upgradeability in the MBA.

No problems when i used with Snow Leopard. I upgraded: Now Kreonika is not happy. Not happy at all!

In cases like this, if you have an Apple store near by, they will most likely install the OS free of charge for you, if you can't bring your Apple ID along to prove you've paid for it.
Would that work out for you?

Is it possible to use a Script within an action? - it doesn't seem to work...
I'm using the 'round any corner' script from SATO Hiroyuki..., and  I'd like to apply it to only one anchor point (on multiple boxes)

An Action can call a script from the File>Scripts menu by means of the Add Menu Item Action step. But it will only work for the duration of your Illustrator work session. If you quit AI and then restart it, the Add Menu Item step will be blank. This bug has been reported for FOUR FULL VERSIONS of this sloppy program.
However, if I am correctly understanding your description of what you are trying to automate, an Action will not be able to automate the selection of a particular anchorpoint in multiple paths. You'd have to make the selections all at first. Whether the script would then apply as desired to each path depends on how the script is written.
