Upgrading RAM on MacBook Pro (October 2008)
i have 2gb of ram currently.
i was wondering whether i could buy 2 4gb sticks of ram
will the laptop recognize 8gb of ram
i have read that it only recognizes 3gb
i need to know
thanksJust for clarification, you can upgrade the early 2009 models of the 15" Macbook Pro to 8GB of RAM. As long as you have the 2.66 or 2.93 version (or any subsequent model) then the same 8GB upgrade kit sold for the 17" Unibody will work (I'm typing this now on a 2.66GHz 15" with 8GB installed). Whether or not this configuration is officially supported as of the time of this writing is unknown but there is no technical limitation to prevent it from being done, unlike the earlier models (2.4, 2.53, 2.8) which do not support anything over 4GB (the OS may see it but it won't run reliably).

Upgrading Ram in Macbook Pro (Early 2008)
I heard that the max Ram allowed is 6GB, but Apple says 4GB. Has anyone used the 6GB in their MBP and have you noticed a better functionality of the computer? I am thinking of upgrading. Sorry if this is a dumb question everyone.
NightNinjaPDXAdding more RAM will only help if what you do causes the computer to run out of RAM, thus forcing it to use disk-based VM which is much slower than physical RAM. But adding RAM will not make the computer run faster. Only a more powerful CPU will accomplish that end.
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently. It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster. What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent. It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs. -
Maximum Ram in Macbook pro Late 2008
I have acquired a Macbook pro late 2008, 2.4GHz Intel Core Duo and am wanting to upgrade the Ram. The handbook says 4GB is the max but Ive seen up to 8GB. I have used Crucial's scanner and it says 8GB. Which is correct please?
You can check further if you like, by going to http://www.everymac.com and click on the MacBook Pro and then go down to your model...it helps to have the Model Identifier to double check. But that should be a Unibody which uses 204-pin modules.
To get the Model Identifier: the apple left side of the menu bar, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware and it will show the Model Identifier as MacBook Pro with a number such as 3,1. Compare that with the Everymac number to be sure. -

Upgrade advice for Mac Pro early 2008 needed
I've upgraded to 14 GB ram but my old 2008 Mac Pro (2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-core) now definitely needs replacing. As I want to keep my high end NEC monitor (I work with print design and don't like glossy screens) I wonder if a new Mac Pro is the only realistic option? They're a bit above my budget really but not sure that the top end Mac mini (2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7) will be a lot more powerful than what I have now.
I'm working mainly in the Adobe creative suite. Any advice much appreciated.Just canceled the order. However I finally got to speak to a tech support guy that seemed a bit more knowledgeable. For less money, and (he said) a better way to go, he recommended the Mercury Accelsior_E2
PCI Express SSD. The 120 GB is $299.
Specs here:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/PCIe/OWC/Mercury_Accelsior/Buy_Now
I'll look into the Tempo Pro and compare. Grant mentions that some users have been having trouble getting a PCIe SSD mounted strategy to boot consistently - that concerns me. Grant, can you point me to reports? How have you come by this info?
Hatter - I probably will only use one SSD to get me through the next year or two. Then I'll upgrade. Hatter, the Tempo Pro appears to only be a card adapter, and the SSDs are addtional, correct? The card itself runs $234.
I am looking at the MacRumors review of the OWC and Tempo products too. -

Upgrading ram in Macbook pro 2 Model 8,3
I want to upgrade the RAM in my Early 2011 macbook Pro. I already purchased it. I bought CORSAIR 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600). When I go to Apple's site to see how to install it says I can't put more than 8GB in this machine.I went to Corsair's site and plugged in the model etc. this memory came up as being compatible. I'm very confused. The Apple specs say this model supports up to 8GB. Does that mean in each slot or total. I will loose $ if I have to return these, but I don't want to harm my computer.
Glad I could help.

Problems upgrading RAM for Macbook Pro 13" late 2011
First, thank you all for your assistance.
I don't know if this has happened to anyone yet. I have a 13" late 2011 MacBook Pro that came with a default 4 GB of RAM. I considered upgrading to 8 GB and problems arose: I had stripes 1 inch in lenght distributed across the screen. I've done some research and saw that it was a hardware problem with the Graphics Card/GPU. I switched back to the original 4 GB and so far so good, no problems. I did notice a few key things:
Originally I have 384 MB of Video Ram in the GPU
While using the 8 GB Ram upgrade, it said 512 (called my attention)
It reverted to 384 when switching to the original RAM
In the tech specs section of Apple Support site about my machine, it says that the Video RAM is "shared" with main memory. No other knowledge on that.
Could the RAM upgrade affected the memory supported by the GPU? Why did it increase? Is there any solution to this?
Thanks to everybody in advance. It should - I've 16GB of RAM installed in my late 2011 15" and my built-in card now shows 512MB of VRAM. There might have been a problem with the RAM you installed. I would only buy Crucial, Kingston (not the 'value' brand), OWC or Corsair (again, not the 'value' brand).
Some RAM sellers simply have less than stellar performance using Macs. Make sure that you install the correct speed and specs as recommended by Apple.
Good luck,

Upgrading RAM on MacBook Pro 13" to 1 Slot of 4Gb RAM
Please help,
I want to upgrade my MacBook Pro's RAM. Currently I have 2Gb of RAM, one 1Gb on the top slot and another one 1Gb in the bottom slot. I want to upgrade to 4Gb of RAM so that I only use one 4Gb on the top slot.
TechSpecs:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,5
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP55.00AC.B03I thought if I was only going to use 1 module, I should put it in the bottom slot.
It doesn't matter which slot you put it in. If you put it in the bottom slot, you won't have to remove it first if you decide to add a second one later. But why on earth would you choose not to use both slots now, when you have modules to put in both? 5GB of RAM is better than 4GB. -

Problem Upgrading RAM on MacBook Pro
I have a MacBook Pro (one of the first MacBook Pros) It originally came with 512 RAM. I upgraded my RAM by buying and installing 2 1GB Banks of Crucial RAM, I followed some instructions that I found online (both video and written) and the installation seemed to go fine - the laptop rebooted fine and it seemed to be working fine. When I click on the apple it shows the memory as being 2GB. However, every once in a while my laptop now automatically reboots and one time the screen went completely grey. Obviously I've done something wrong. Any troubleshooting advice would be appreciated.
put in your original install disk.
start the machine, while holding down command d
this will put you into the hardware test.
run the extended version.
this will check the integrity of all your hardware, including your ram. -
Upgrade ram on macbook pro 2010
I have bought two different brands (G.Skill and PNY) of ram for my Macbook Pro 13.3 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (2010) trying to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB and both are not working. Meaning I followed the exact instructions, didn't touch the Gold and installed it the way I was supposed to. When I turn it on, it freezes. When I put the old memory in ( 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ) it starts up fine. The new memory is 1066. . .could that be the problem? I've gone through two "ram finders" where you put in the different specs of the Macbook and it's brought up the exact same ones each time. The brand I got this time, PNY, said it was Mac Compatible. What am I doing wrong? And do I need the exact same brand that's already in my Macbook (Samsung) or is there a different brand that will be comparable?
Thanks. It is always advisable to use the same brand for both the memory chip.
As you wrote you have one RAM stick from PNY and other from G.Skill that may be the cause of problem.
Buy both the RAM chip of same brand.
Hope that helps. -
Problem after upgrading ram in macbook pro 5,3 to 8gb
Hello.
I was trying to help my friend, to upgrade his macbook pro 5.3's memmory, from 4 gb to 8 gb.
We bought the cm3x8gsdkit1066:
Memory Configuration Dual Channel
Memory Type DDR3
Package - Memory Pin 204
Speed Rating PC3-8500 (1066MHz)
Package - Memory FormatSODIMM
http://www.corsair.com/en/memory-by-product-family/value-select-memory-upgrades/ cm3x8gsdkit1066.html
As i see this, the memmory, should be fine, and suported, and the macbook accepts 8 gb as a max.
When the computer boots, it beeps 3 times, waits, and repeat it. I found this as a error code for the ram?
So my problem, what can i do to solve this problem? The macbook accepts the old ram, and boots up fine.
Best regards
Christian HolmIt may be that the RAM is not compatible or faulty for some reason. Have you tried to install it again just to make certain that it is seated correctly. If still no success, I would return it and get RAM from Crucial or OWC. They are the two vendors of failsafe Mac RAM.
Ciao.
8 Gb RAM for the mid 2009 MBP should cost about $50. If you paid the price on the link, you paid too much.

Can't load either itunes or quicktime
I'm having a terrible problem that actually began with the previous iTunes upgrade. At that time, I couldn't upgrade to 7.3 because I kept getting the message that I had an older version of the Apple Software Upgrade program and had to uninstall it.
