Upgrading SAP Kernel

I need to upgrade the Kernel of our 620 BW System as it hasn't been done for a couple of years.
The current level is 1393 and DB 1467.
I have downloaded the following:
SAPEXE 1773 - (Kernel part 1 for Stack Q4-2004) and
SAPEXEDB 1773 - (Kernel part II for Stack Q4-2004)
Just wondering if this stack will contain all outstanding files from our current level?  Does this look like the correct version to install.
Many thanks!
Marie

Hi Marie,
Yes the 640 Kernel is supported, as it is downwards compatible. By the way we are running all our 620 systems with the 640 Kernel also on Windows/SQL.
Maybe your problem is a result of a missing profile parameter (in default profile), that has changed.
Missing parameter is dbs/mss/server=<hostname>\<instance>.
Take a look at SAP note 858449.
Another tip is maybe the librfc32.dll in the <windir>\system32 directory of your server, that also has to be updated. (Please don't rename or move the old file, copy it to another name or directory to make a backup, before you replace it with the new one! You risk to mix up some registry information).
Did you had any errors while copying the new (640) kernel to the ..\sys\exe\run directory ? (file in use or so?)
Are you sure you have stopped every thing before you replaced the kernel ? (SAP, DB, saposcol, sapmmc, and all sap-services) ?
Sometimes (can't explain) a boot of the server helps clean up errors that can't be explained
Can you give some more information about your error (Error:  9007041D) is not much information....
And last yes the sap_droproc is necessary, specially if you upgrade the kernel (is mentioned in SAP note 664679).
I hope you can solve your "upgrade"...

Rolf

  • Reg UPgrading SAP Kernel for ECC 6.0

    Hi,
We have a ECC 6.0  SAP System.
The current kernel in our system is 133.
We wanted to upgrade the Kernel
We have the following kernel versions
    146
    159
    175
    179
    185
We wanted to know the stable kernel versions among the above and general issues encountered in the kernels
    Please advice

Just go to the latest kernel.... no point in going from an old kernel to another old kernel. Usually kernels are released every quarter so just get the latest available.

  • How to upgrade SAP Kernel in clustered environment

I have a SAP R3 4.6 C installed on cluster environment, such that if one server goes down, the second clustered server takes the charge of all the resources from failing server. Also I have 6 application servers.
This is the reason, I have to mantain the SAP exe files in /exe/run on the 6 different application servers seperately. My question is: If I have a shared directory for exe files on central instance, and it goes down, then the 6 application servers will lose connection to those exe files. Then, how should I then connect these 6 apps servers to exe files of the 2nd failover clustered server?
So please let me know how to resolve this problem.

    Hi Matt,
Thanks for the update. The cluster is installed with virtual host. But unfortunately we have all exe files seperately on different 6 app servers. Should we NFS mount the exe directory on all apps server. Is NFS mounting sufficient or there are any additional steps to done. I heard that we have to activate sapcpe on the apps server.
Also after the kernel upgrade, do we have to distribute it on all the apps servers. Can you kindly guide me in this issue.
    Thanks,
    Arun

    Hello,
I run 'R3trans -x' command, but there was no problem - connection to database was working.
    Problem was following:
Before starting the sdt service on host, I set environment variables JAVA_HOME and LD_LIBRARY_PATH for sidadm. That's not neccessary and that was the problem. Without setting these variables it is working now.
    Thanks,

  • Upgrading a kernel in ABAP or Java - what is correct for 7.01 and 7.1

There are a couple ways to upgrade a kernel  depending on ABAP or Java.
I want to know what is the best safest and approved way to upgrade an ABAP kernel based on 7.01 and 7.1
I don't want to miss with temporary softlinks because our consultant did that and forgot abut it, which cause a huge problem.
This is a UNIX 64 bit OS.
    Thanks
    Weyland Yutani

    Hi,
For doing ABAP kernel upgrade there plenty of resources available. You can refer the following guide for a comprehensive overview with step by step instruction of Kernel upgrade process :-
    http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/70d8838d-cb8f-2c10-7ab8-d1504670fbb8?quicklink=index&overridelayout=true
Just make sure to check the following points before starting the upgrade :-
    1) Take full backup of existing Kernel directory
After taking full backup of old kernel directory, check the total no. of files in the backup kernel directory by #ls -al|wc -l & cross check same files exist in the orginal kernel directory. This should be done before starting actual kernel upgrade - just to ensure that after wiping out current kernel dir and then after applying new kernel if there is any issue & you have restore the old kernel then you are not missing any files.
    2) Check the softlinks in the existing kernel directory & keep a screenshot so that after kernel upgrade you can create those links.
    Use #ln -s <remote filesystems to be linked> <local file at Kernel directory>
        e.g :  3> ln -s a b
         sapsys 1 Aug 26 09:34 b -> a
Thus if you wish then you can create those softlinks manually. This may be required for brtools, TSM etc related softlink depending on your scenario you can recreate the links.

  • Missing IDES ECC5 installation disk for SAP Kernel - MaxDB Version

    Hi,
Our HQ sent us installation disks for IDES ECC5.  We copied them all onto our server and started installation.  The system is now informing us that it can't find the SAP kernel information.
I can only assume that we're missing one of the installation disks.
We're desperate to get this installed and it will take another week for our HQ to send through another disk.  Does anyone know whether we can download this from somewhere?  We have had a look on SAP marketplace but you only seem to be able to download the kernel for Oracle, MSSQL and DB2....no MaxDB.
Additionally, if there is somewhere in Asia we can download this, then that would be better as we are having internet problems when connecting to Europe and the US.
    Thanks in advance!
    Tristan

    Hello Tristan,
This is not the correct forum to post your question.
You was not asked about the database(MAXDB) kernel software.
    You need SAP kernel software
-> Review the installation guides at service.sap.com/instguides ->
mySAP Business Suite Applications -> mySAP ERP -> mySAP ERP 2004
    -> SAP ECC 5.0 ->
Installation Guides of SAP ECC 5.0 SR1
-> < Please see the steps 'How to Proceed' > ->
    -> MySQL MaxDB
< Part I: Planning and Preparation
Part II: Installation and Post-Installation  >
-> select the documents for the OS of your server.
And the document from the 'Part I: Planning and Preparation' you will get information that you need the SAP kernel CD & & what is the minimum required version & the reference to the location at the SAP Marketplace to download it, if you don't have the required SAP kernel CD.
< You could download the CD from service.sap.com/installations ->
    Entry by applicataion group ->
Installations and Upgrades -> SAP NetWeaver -> SAP NETWEAVER->
    SAP NETWEAVER 04 ->
    Installation and Upgrade ->
    < OS> -> < database > -> CD 'SAP Kernel ... <database><OS>.
SAP kernel software is database, platform, Unicode specific.   >
In the 'Part II: Installation and Post-Installation' document you will find the the list of the required DVDs for the SAP system-ABAP installation.
-> Are you running the installation of the the 'Central Instance', 'Dialog Instance' or 'Database instance' ?
For the 'Database instance' Installation you need:
    SAP Installation Master DVD
    SAP Kernel DVD
    RDBMS DVD
    SAP Export DVD
-> What CD/DVD do you have for the installation?
<  You could download the CDs from service.sap.com/installations ->
    Entry by applicataion group ->
Installations and Upgrades -> Entry by Application Group
    -> SAP Application Components -> SAP ERP-> SAP ERP 2004 -> Installation and Upgrade -> <OS> ->SAP DB  >
You could also order the CD, if you have problems with download from the SAP Marketplace.
Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina
PS: SAP Note 19466 will give you information about download of SAP Kernel Patches.

  • SAP kernel

    Hi friends,
Our systems Ecc6.0 HPux/oracle 10g, we have have upgraded the kernel to patch 185, changed th permission for ora<sid> and icmbnd and saposcol .
After the updgrade of kernel not able to start the database and When i run R3trans -d
    i get the below error
2EETW169 no connect possible: "maybe someone set invalid values for DIR_LIBRARY ('/usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run') or dbms_type ('ORA')
Checked the enviroment vaialble andalso checked the SAPnote 403004 and 400241
    but still the same issue
can some one help to resolve the same.
    thanks

    Hi,
Please check your system's DIR_LIBRARY and dbms_type environment variables.
It is clearly stating in the error message that
no connect possible: "maybe someone set invalid values for DIR_LIBRARY ('/usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run') or dbms_type ('ORA')
When initiating an SAP system, the database-dependent database library is loaded before the DBSL is called up for the first time. The system searches for the library in the directory indicated by the environment variable DIR_LIBRARY (for example,. /usr/sap/<SAPSID>/SYS/exe/run). The environment variable dbms_type contains the name of the required database management system. When the system is initiated, an attempt is made to load the library belonging to the required database management system from the directory indicated by the environment variable DIR_LIBRARY.
If you want more assistance then please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Sudip.

  • Can SAP Kernel 640 (linked OCI_9.2) run Ora DB 9.2 via instant client 10g ?

    Hello,
One of our old system runs a SAP Kernel 640 OCI_920.
    DB server runs Oracle 9.2
We would like to backup it with RMAN to take advantage of backup as saveset with disk_copy_cmd = rman_set
So according to OSS 1101530, we should run at least BrTools 7.00 patch 30 or BRTools 7.10 patch 5.
OSS 849483 and 1060539 state that those Br*Tools can be run with a database server Oracle 9.2 if an Oracle instant client 10g is installed on the Database server.
I wonder if it is possible without upgrading the DB Server to oracle 10g
    1) Can SAP Kernel 640 (linked OCI_9.2) run Ora DB 9.2 via instant client 10g ?
    2) Or should we go to an SAP Kernel 640_EX2 ?
    3) If so, shouldn't Oracle server be upgraded to 10g beforehand ?
I will try to get some clue in the product availibility matrix, but if you already have some piece of information about it, please just shoot !
Thx in advance for you time

  • Upgrade SAP 4.6C to 4.6D R3up procedure

    Dear All,
Can anyone advice for a precise detailed procedure on how to Upgrade
SAP 4.6C to SAP 4.6D using the R3up procedure?
    Thanks in advance.
    Simoun

    hi,
    Reference from SAP Note 965145
(46D SAP kernel CD Material Number: 51019881) We have this plan of upgrading the kernel of our existing R/3 to make it compatible to run on IA64.
We have this plan to upgrade in this path
    R/3 4.6C (R3up process) to R/3 4.6D to (SAPinst) ECC 6.0
So if anyone can kindly provide me the procedure for R3up "R/3 4.6C (R3up process) to R/3 4.6D" r3upgrade.

  • SAP kernel vs btools vs oracle version

    we have some questions,
    1. sap ecc ehp4 ready sr1 version, is use kernel 7.01 version, can i upgrade to 7.2 version?
    2. can upgrade brtools version from 7.00 to 7.2 ?
    3. sap ecc ehp4 ready sr1 version, can use oracle 11.2 version on aix, windows, hp-ux?
    thank you everyboy help?

    > i replace brtools 7.2 version on windows, get error "application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect......."
Check your windows event log. Most likely you'll see there an error like the one described in
Note 1402510 - Resolving SideBySide Assembly Errors
and hence you need to fix the ATL library by applying the Windows fix:
Note 1375494 - SAP system does not start after applying SAP kernel patch

  • SAP Kernel version

    Hello,
For Kernel 6.40, there are 2 types available now:
    - SAP Kernel 6.40
    - SAP Kernel 6.40 EX2
I believe the EX2 type was recently released by SAP.
Now, for Windows, both these types (normal and EX2) are applicable.
We have to perform a Kernel upgrade.
Which one should we use? normal or EX2?
Moreover, whats the difference between the 2 types?
    Thanks.

    I checked.
    It says:
    kernel release                640
    kernel make variant           640_REL
So, I guess, this is normal version.
    Also, I found Note 1058988 - 640_EX2 Kernels
    Thanks.

  • Confuse between SAP Kernel and SAP Installation file

    Dears:
My CPU is ADM 64 bit, but when i try to download the ECC5 which will be installed in linux 32 bit system from SAP site, i find the confuse between SAP Kernel and SAP instllation file.
    1. In the ECC5 download page, i can see lots of oracle download file, some named DVD ORACLE RDBMS 10.2 LINUX_IA32 1 of 4 , some named Oracle 10.2.0.2. for LINUX32. So if the LINUX_IA32 is only for the CPU which is Itanium CPU?
    2. I check the sap update kernel, SAP Kernel 32 bit unicode is devided by sap kernel 6.4 320-bit unicode---Linux on IA 32-bit, so if my CPU is AMD 64 bit, but my os is Linux 32 bit, if the upgrade kernel file Linux on IA 32-bit can be used for Linux 32 bit system whith 64 bit CPU, or if the Linux on IA 32-bit is just for Itanium CPU?

    Hello again
I just checked the pam again, and it looks like i got it wrong. There is still 32-bit available for ECC5.
    ORACLE 10.2       LINUX REDHAT EL5/IA32 32BIT  24.07.2007  Released SAP KERNEL 6.40 32-BIT
So technically it should be possible to install it the way you wanted. Sorry for my misleading post (but hey you should still consider using 64-bit :-).
    Best regards, Michael

  • Upgrade to kernel 3.12.6-1: Blank Screen Boot

    Hi all,
after performing today the upgrade to kernel 3.12.6-1 on my Lenovo V570 I was confronted with the following boot issue:
After selecting the Archlinux boot entry in gummiboot the screen becomes blank.
I am using gummiboot on a separate EFI partition. The weird thing is that if I boot into UEFI shell from the archlinux cd I can select
    fs0:/EFI/Boot/BOOTX64.EFI
and it boots like a charm.
Downgrading to 3.12.5-1 solves the problem and upgrading again causes it again to happen. I can not find any useful information in my system log but I nevertheless append it. (the log originates from a boot via UEFI shell therefor the 3.12.6-1 kernel)
