Upgrading Single Processor MDD to Superdrive

A friend of mine wants to transfer the Superdrive from his dead dual processor MDD over into his still-kicking single processor 1.25 MDD which just has the combo drive. Does anyone know any conflicts, mechanical or system, which would prevent him from doing so?
Also, he would like to make the same transfer with the Nvidia GeoforceTi card, moving it from the DP MDD to the SP MDD to replace the (I think) Radeon card that it currently has. Any problem with either of these switch-outs?
Thanks!

Hi, Stephen -
The swap of the Superdrive should be straight forward, plug and play.
The video card would seem to be okay, also - the three model series of the G4 (MDD) machines {the original, the FW800, and the 2003 ones} all had the GeForce4 Ti as a standard (extra cost) option.

  • Should I upgrade my 1.25Ghz single processor MDD?

I bought a MDD from eBay last October. It's got a 80GB HD, 1GB RAM and 10.4.11 on it plus Office 2008. Want to replace the original HD with at least a 500GB one, but don't know what brand of drive to get. I've read some bad reviews on recent Seagates etc. Also have read that Western Digital aren't what they used to be. So don't know what to get...
A while back I read that some G4s had power supply problems (because of cooling problems), which bummed me out. I hope and pray my MDD's PSU doesn't become toast! I haven't used the Mac yet until I get the HD replaced, RAM maxed out and the PRAM battery replaced. Want to do it all at once. If I had to replace the PSU someday, I probably won't, after seeing the instructions on how to do so. I really can't afford to do that if it came to that. The Mac does have PCI (is that the term?) slots (for extra cards) with holes in them. Haven't seen any pics of that Mac will these holes as far as I can remember..., so maybe they would help with cooling. I do recall reading just recently that Apple ADC monitors can cook MDD PSUs just being plugged it! I have one of those monitors that I use with my Sawtooth and was going to use it with the MDD, but now I better NOT!
The Mac was well taken care of and was used in a graphics design dept. from what the seller told me. It does look almost brand new with just a few scratches! I haven't opened the MDD to see what it looks like inside. The seller did say that he cleaned the insides out.
Soooo, am wondering if I should even spend money on a new HD and more RAM for it, with the chance of the PSU quitting. (Would the "About this Mac" say what kind of PSU it has?) I know this could happen to any computer out there and you're always taking a gamble etc. By the way, which brand of RAM is best: Crucial or OWC?
    Thanks.

Nothing is anymore, the demand for "cheaper" has taken it's toll.

Whew, only you can decide, but upgrades...
THe only way to really improve CPU performance measurably is with this... & a brand new Mini for the same price would still run circles around it...

  • Upgrade G3 B&W and G4 Single Processor from OS 9.2.1 to 10.4 Tiger?

I Purchased a G4 Installation / restore disk OS 10.4......Used an external DVD drive and disk opens fine on both machines, but when I click on install, both machines give me the following error message (even if I use the "C" key on startup..."startup disk was unable to select the install CD as the startup disk (-2)....There is no support for OS 9 or it's related browsers on the internet, and I use both my G3 (home) and G4 (business)....I need to have access to the internet in both locations. Would someone kindly give me some advice on how to upgrade to OS 10.4.......drivers?.......use external Hard drive? Many thanks in advance......

Hi Limnos......Many thanks for the info...good stuff. As it turns out, my G3 B&W is a server version and was given to me by a company that I worked for until they moved to northern (brrr) Wisconsin. It has two SCSI cards, one of them the LVD -2 ADPT card. Thanks to you I have already installed the firmware on the card. Some of the info on trhe G3 suggests that I need to be running O.S. 8.6 to upgrade to O.S. X???? I have been running O.S.9.2.1 for years but Comcast, E- Bay and half the rest of the world out there no longer supports Browsers, etc. for O.S. 9....Why would I need 8 when I have 9.2.1.that doesn't make much sense. This computer IMHO was way ahead of it's time and cost the company that gave it to me something in the neighborhood of $2700.00 when they bought it new! It has two firewire ports along with USB and the SCSI
cards and SCSI hard drive.....It is a great computer, and the only reason that I never tried to upgrade to O.S.10
sooner is the fact that it has been rock solid reliable running 9.2.1, and I kept hearing about "glitches going on with the early versions of O.S.10." You know how that one goes..."If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it". I had Adelphia Cable Internet for quite a few years, and they supported O.S.9, but their tech people for the most part were clueless about the macs. I really need to get X on this machine!
One final question...My G4 is a single processor 733 machine, and believe it or not was given to my son when it was only a year old! We didn't get an O.S. install disk with it, but the (gray) disk I just purchased IS
a G4 (specific) install/ restore disk that according to many threads I've seen should work on my G4. I haven't been able to determine from the info you so kindly gave me if it needs a firmware update or not? There seem to be so many versions of the G4 that I'm not sure what category it fits into as far as firmware requirements are concerned........It has plenty of RAM and two firewire ports, but beyond that I'm puzzled. Thanks again!

  • Upgrading from single processor to multi processor

I am looking for information on upgrading a 7.3 Oracle from a
single processor to a multi processor. I will be putting in
another processor in my server and would like to know how to get
Oracle to use this second processor. I know that I need to
upgrade Windows NT to multiprocessor first but what do I need to
    do after that with Oracle.

I'm not certain why that would be the wrong boards. I guess HP has the wrong boards posted on their product's support site at the link below.

  • Trying to upgrade from dual 500MHz to single processor

    Question 1
My Mac G4 GE has a dual 500 Mhz processor installed. Is it possible to upgrade to a 7447, 7448 or 7455 single processor or do I have to stay with a dual processor for my G4 to work?
    Question #2
Can you tell me when the upgrade will not help anymore since my G4 has a 100Mhz Bus or maybe any other hardware that will limit the processor up to a certain speed?
    Thank you guys

    Hi-
Is it possible to upgrade to a 7447, 7448 or 7455 single processor
    Yes.
do I have to stay with a dual processor for my G4 to work?
    No.
maybe any other hardware that will limit the processor up to a certain speed?
The processor will run at stated speed.
Any hardware that is faster or more powerful than the component being replaced will enhance performance.
Can you tell me when the upgrade will not help anymore since my G4 has a 100Mh
RAM is the only thing that will not be upgradeable, as far as speed. Larger capacity is no problem, and will help performance.
Of course, all upgrades are relative to the bus speed and throughput on the bus. As compared to a faster system, the performance won't be as high overall.
But, this is comparing apples to oranges......

  • One Image for dual and single processor G5 machines

I'm working in a lab that has both single and dual processors G5 machines. There is only one image for both machines and I suspect that we have a few bugs with the single processor machines because of this. Has anyone else used one image for both single and dual processors? Have there been problems. I'm wondering if it is necessary to create two separate images.
    mdinger

There is not difference in the images, but you might have problems with the single G5 machines and 10.4. Did you do the firmware upgrade?
I have ~10 single G5 and 25 dual D5 machines netinstalled from one image without trouble.

  • Can you upgrade the processor in a Presario CQ62-210us

I just bought a compaq presario cq62-210us, and I didn't realize that it had a single core celeron 900 processor, so what I was wondering is if it is possible to upgrade to a dual core processor.
I know that it is hard to upgrade the processor on laptops, but is there a specific chip that would fit in this model? If not, then is there a simuilar model that has the same internal  configuration, that I could just switch the processor with the model I currently have?

  • How to Upgrade a Processor?

    Hi everyone,
I have an old 733 MHz Quicksilver G4 single processor with 1.25 GB. It's a base model but I added a LaCie Super Drive into it some years ago. I am thinking about upgrading the single processor to a dual processor. Is this possible? What would I need to do to get this done and give it some more "muscle power"? I don't know the technical side of it very much...
    Help is appreciated.
    Rio.

    Hi
Third party G4 processor upgrades are available from a number of manufacturers including Sonnet, Giga Designs, FastMac and OWC/PowerLogix/NewerTech. Their web sites have downloadable installation manuals and/or videos so you can see what would be involved.
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/cpu_upgrades.html
    http://www.gigadesigns.com/
    http://fastmac.com/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/accelerators/
Another option is to use an original Apple processor card pulled from another Quicksilver. I upgraded my single 800MHz Quicksilver with a dual 1GHz processor card pulled from another machine and was happy with the performance increase.
Removing the old processor just involves releasing the two heat sink clips, lifting the heat sink off, undoing the four screws securing the processor card to the logic board and lifting the processor card up. Some care is needed though as a slipped screw driver when releasing the clips could damage the logic board, and if the processor card isn't lifted straight up the processor socket could be damaged. Installation of the new processor is pretty much the reverse process, although it partly depends on whether it's a third party upgrade with the heat sink already attached etc.
Some processor upgrades, typcially 7447 based ones, also require a supplied firmware patch be applied so the boot ROM will recognise the processor. Most 7455 based ones don't. 7455 based upgrades also tend to be faster in real world performance for a given clock speed, as they support level 3 cache.
    I hope this helps.

  • Installing Additional Processor in Single Processor G5 Xserve Model M9743LL

I purchased a used G5 Xserve Model M9743LL/A, that comes with a single processor. Is it possible to upgrade the Xserve by adding a second processor? The Xserve appears to have the exact same physical configuration as the dual CPU model. Does it have a different motherboard? What would prevent an upgrade?

Yes, the XServe G5 Rev B is the one with yellow DDR 2GB print close to the RAM slots. So it should accept up to 8 x 2GB RAM. You'll need the processor module, that includes the heatsink, 2 screws and the plastic heatsink cover with G5 on it. My Apple Reseller order everything for me. I'll contact them to get the spare part numbers, and i'll post everything here.
I can recall i just booted the Xserve, and after it was started up, it showed it was a dual processor model. So no reïnstalls or zapping the PRAM...

  • Upgrading my G4 MDD dual 867 with Gigadesigns dual 1.33 upgrade; worth it?

I am updgrading my PowerMac G4 dual 867 and doing most of the usual; ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB AGP video card, more internal hard drives, still debating on SCSI hard drive; then maxing out memory at 2GB (missing anything else to upgrade?)
I am also considering on upgrading the processor to Gigadesigns dual 1.33 processor upgrade (btw, is this the only processor upgrade available for me?). First, is it worth it? Second, will this force me to change out my PC 2100 DDR SDRAM memory modules? Any other foreseen problems with upgrading to the dual 1.33 processor?
I am hoping to get a response from someone who has actually upgraded their MDD dual 867 with Gigadesigns processor and see what they have to say about it.

MDD upgrades were complex, challenging, and there are 6 different configurations and versions of MDDs out there. And the supply of 7455Bs may be a limiting factor.
If you need OS 9 or don't want a G5 (2.0's for $1699 making it affordable "upgrade") and $499 seems acceptable, and your applications will benefit, AND you don't need more than 2GB RAM (which is limiting also)...
The 9800 Radeon adds more heat and noise and $249 to costs, and the fan is loud but also can fail (poor designed product?).
yes for SATA 10K Raptor over SCSI! Less heat, fast, SATA cables are easy to use and don't cost $100 for good stuff.
But you want to spend how much? $1000 - 1200? a pair of Raptors or something? Seriously, get a G5 from Apple Specials. Your MDD can offset the cost later too.

    Hi:
It would be hard for me to say if upgrading the processor will make a significant difference in performance.
I have never installed a processor in a notebook PC myself, so I cannot give you any first hand tips.
The information to remove and replace the processor can be found in the service manual.
You cannot upgrade the video adapter.
You can upgrade the memory, but there wouldn't be much improvement there because your notebook has 3 GB already, to just replace the 1 GB chip with a 2 GB chip.
In order to really go beyond that, you would have to puchase a 64 bit operating system, and install 2 x 4 GB of memory which the memory alone would cost over $200.00.
As far as the newer BIOS, it is possible the notebook automatically updated it once after you got it.

  • Can I upgrade the processor on my laptop? If so, what processors are compatible for my system?

I have an HP Pavillion dv6-2150us, which runs an Intel Core i3 @ 2.13 GHz, 8 GB RAM and Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  Can I upgrade this processor and if so, what processors are compatible to this system?

First think about memory and an SSD drive. Laptop processor upgrades are a big hassle and not cheap.

You could upgrade but since your in the same family processor your not gong to get any gains with the upgrade. Stick with your current processor.

    Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.

Supported processors can be found in chapter 1, pages 1 & 2.
Part numbers for processors can be found in chapter 3.
Enter the part number in the box at the link below and you can see what HP charges for them.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the processor for my HP Pavilion g6-2244sa?

Hi everyone, i'm just curious as to whether or not I can upgrade the processor in my HP Pavilion g6-2244sa. It currently has the AMD E2-1800 APU (@1.70ghz, dual core) installed. It also has 8gb DDR3 RAM.
The laptop is awesome, it has a decent graphics card and can even play Skyrim on good settings. The only problem is that the processor isn't really up to scratch and games suffer from minor lag. I was curious as to whether or not it is possible to install a different processor such as the AMD E4 (@2.5ghz, dual core). I've seen other versions of the very same laptop with that processor installed.
    Thanks!
