I have a Macbook Air late 2010 model with only 2 GB RAM. I was not going to opt for a Mavericks upgrade after I heard all the complains about the system getting slower and battery life ruined. I am now worried about the lack of apps I am able to download or purchase as nearly all require Mavericks as OS. Do you give me the advice of upgrading to Mavericks or to continue using Snow Leopard pls? 10x

Continue with Snow Leopard on that Mac. Mavericks requires at Least 4 GB of RAM... 8 GB is better.
NOTE also that Rosetta is no longer supported in Mavericks, Mountain Lion and Lion.

Impossible to know. But I would make a backup before doing so, just in case. I would also do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If you wish to save yourself a lot time should you need to reinstall Mavericks at some point in the future then see the following:
Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
   2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.

You can also create a Mavericks flash drive installer via the Terminal. Mavericks has its own built-in installer maker you use via the Terminal:
You will need a freshly partitioned and formatted USB flash drive with at least 8GBs. Leave the name of the flash drive at the system default, "Untitled." Do not change this name. Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Copy this entire command line after the prompt in the Terminal's window:
     sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume
     /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen so be careful to enter it correctly. Press RETURN, again.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time. When completed it would be wise to test the installer by checking that it boots the computer and is then ready for installation.

I wanted to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard and bought a retail 10.6 Snow Leopard install disc MC223Z/A. on the box. 2Z691-6428-A on the disc.
It would not let me install it unless I erased and partitioned the destination disc thus losing my settings and preferences like the old Archive and Install as it suggested in the article mentioned below..

OK I solved it.
I followed instructions from http://superuser.com/questions/214943/what-is-preventing-my-macbook-from-sleepin g/409481/
Go to Utilities in the Applications folder and open the "Terminal" app.
Type pmset -g and hit Enter
If "sleep" has 0 next to it and the words "imposed by" or "prevented by ; The number next to the imposed by is the process ID causing the problem. Copy that number.
Type ps -e | grep <process ID here> and hit Enter. This will list all running processes that have that ID (will also include the grep process)
For me it turned out to be Internet Sharing enabled that prevented my MBP from sleeping.

HI a friend of mine had snow leopard since she had her MBP 13" from new, and hasnt bothered to upgrade.
she thinks she will now upgrade to Lion, but is this still available ? and from where ?
otherwise would she be able to jump straight upto mavericks for free ?

Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

Can I upgrade Snow Leopard to Lion from a backup system?

Hi,
This is a bit of a roundabout question so let me establish what's going on:
-I just got a new Mac Pro 6-core a few days ago, which arrived with Lion installed.
-I backed up the fresh Lion system to an external drive and downgraded to Snow Leopard to retain compatibility with certain apps.
-I imaginge somewhere down the line I will have to follow suit and upgrade to Lion/Mountain Lion, so....
Is there ANY way I could use my backup of the fresh Lion system to upgrade my Snow Leopard (if need be) to prevent me having to purchase Lion to upgrade Snow Leopard instead?

Aside from the fact that it will probably not work, the point is that your license for the preinstalled Lion is only good for one machine. If you want it on any other machine, you will need to buy it. Why don't you just wait until you want to install Mountain Lion - if the terms are the same as they were for Lion, it'll cost you $20 to update all your machines.

Are you by chance using an Iogear or othe usb / firewire hub? I'm having a similar problem and I think it may be caused by this device. Try unplugging any usb hubs from your machine and see if the machine boots up. I have a feeling these hubs need an update to work with Snow Leopard.

You need to purchase the upgrade disk (it is a DVD). Then just put it in and run the installer. When it was first released it was $29 USD, do not know if the price has changed or not.
The usual precautions about backing up your data apply. In fact I would recommend either making a Disk Image of your current boot drive or using something like Carbon Copy Cloner to copy it to an external drive. I upgraded 5 machines from Leopard to Snow Leopard without any issues, but better to be safe than sorry.

Hello. Can someone tell me how I can install Mac OS X Snow Leopard on Mac OS X Tiger? I have the disk, but when I open the installer, I get a message saying that Snow Leopard could not be installed on my computer and it could only be installed on a Intel-Based Mac. This is a PowerPC Mac, so that makes sense.
So, I'm trying to ask how to make my Mac an Intel-Based Mac so I could install Snow Leopard. Or if I can't do that, I need to know how to install Snow Leopard some other way. Please help.

Just an FYI, the Mac App Store was introduced with Mac OS X 10.6.6. However the rest of what you say is accurate.
10.6.8 is required if you want to upgrade certain Macs beyond 10.7.5 without having to reformat the drive you are installing the operating system on and without having to install some version of 10.7 first.
One can actually install 10.7 or later if you maintain an original copy of the full installer of the operating system in question for your personal use without having to have the prerequisite operating system installed, if the hardware supported it. But that's a discussion for another forum.

Help! Upgraded Snow Leopard now I can't even log in

Just upgraded Snow Leopard(I think it was the update from 10.6 -> 10.6.2) on my Macbook pro via the software updater. At the end of the installation I got a message saying that there was an error and the update didn't install correctly. I restarted the mac normally and got a log in screen (which I never had previously). I enter my password correctly and then get a blue screen for a few seconds before it brings up the login page again. I can't find a way around this. I know I have entered the password correctly because the login screen doesn't shake.

You have a hosed installation. Step one is to try to boot into safe mode. Details in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 If able, then download the 10.6.2 COMBO update and reinstall it. Hopefully, that will fix the issues. If not, boot with your SL install disc and reinstall 10.6.0. Alternatively, restore the bootable backup/clone or Time Machine backup of your previous installation. See these for details:

Don't be afraid to bump this topic. There's also an App Store forum where you might repost this question, but give some of these details in your post. I'd rephrase the topic to something like "Can't use App Store to upgrade." (Instead of can't "open".) Then give the details.

I had the full version of os leopard, but can't install in the new macbook pro to upgrade to snow leopard. I can't upgrade snow leopard in my power G5 either because it needs intel cpu. Upgrading Snow Leopard to 10.6.2

I have downloaded from Apple the latest version of Snow leopard 10.6.2.I am trying to upgrade Snow leopard since about a month.. Every time I attempt it the Sound disappears. I am really fedup. Local Apple support desk is just useless. They have absolutely no idea what is happening. I called Apple care and they suggested that I move some files in ~/Library on to the desktop and try..Nothing has happened. All I am doing is wasting my time. I have to revert back to 10.6 by using the CD I bought. Apple care support must have some really trained staff if they want to make a dent in the Indian market.. which unfortunately is not the case..
Can anyone help me in this problem?? Thanks in anticipation

Create a new User go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the apps in this new account, if they work the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
If the issue is limited to your user account try starting up Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your apps functions correctly that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
If the issue is systemwide then, you may be able to repair this with the The 10.6.2 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
