Upgrading solaris 10 from solaris 8

Hi Experts,
Looking for your advices/suggesstions/recommendations:
We are going to upgrade our OS from Solaris 8 to Solaris 10. So, I wonder whether we need to apply any patches on DB/application servers/Web servers as well. What will be impact on Application performance?
Currently we are using :
OS : SunOS sperfdb01 5.8 Generic_117350-25 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-15000
DB : Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.8.0 - 64bit Production
(Patch 6646842 applied on Fri Oct 17 08:07:50 BST 2008)
Apps : Oracle Applications : 11.5.9 ; OAS 9.0.4
Web Server : OAS 10.1.2.02

After the upgrade, you will need to relink Oracle and Apps binaries. For relinking Oracle binaries for the database home, see MOS Doc 444595.1 (Is It Necessary To Relink Oracle Following OS Upgrade?)
For Apps installs, Oracle provides scripts in 806_ORACLE_HOME/bin (adlnk806.sh) and iAS_ORACLE_HOME/bin (adlnkiAS.sh) to relink binaries.
You will also need to run adadmin to relink all Apps executables and regenerate forms and reports.
As always, test, test, test and verify before touching production.

  • Upgrading Solaris 10 from 32-bit to 64-bit in a VirtualBox VM

    Hello,
I am running 32-bit Sol 10 u5 x86 as a guest in a Sun VirtualBox (Vbox) virtual machine on a 32-bit WinXP host with 64-bit VT-capable Xeon processors, and am considering upgrading Solaris 10 to 64-bit using the latest version of Vbox (2.0.0). After installing WinXP Professional x64 and the 64-bit version of Vbox, will I have to completely re-install Sol 10 to get it to run in 64-bit, or is there some way to get it to 64-bit without a re-install? The Vbox forums suggested that I post this question on a Solaris forum, as they don't know the answer.
They apparently also do not know if Windows XP x64 is a compatible host OS on which to run 64-bit guests. They list only Vista, Linux, and OpenSolaris as supported 64-bit host OSs. Has anyone used WinXP x64 as a host for Vbox 64-bit guests? Due to policy, Vista is not available to me on my system/network.
    Thank you...

The x86 installer will place both 32-bit and 64-bit code on the disk.
The loader fired by GRUB will attempt to detect the proper hardware and launch the correct kernel.
Other portions of the upgrade could conceivably cause a problem, but having the CPUs go from 32-bit only to 64-bit capable shouldn't be an issue. You don't have to make any changes.

  • Upgrade Solaris 8 from 10/01 to 02/02

Hi all, I need to upgrade some systems from Solaris 8 10/01 to 02/02. I use VxVM 3.2 and VxFS 3.4. I don't need to upgrade Veritas Software. I want use Live Upgrade and in all example I find (2.6 ==> 8) I have to reinstall VxVM. In my situation, is Veritas products reinstallaton mandatory?? Can I use unencapsulation and encapsulation??

    Hi,
You have to get volume manager out of the way before you upgrade solaris. You can un-encapsulate the root disk, upgrade then re-encapsulate if you want.
The way I do is as follows:
boot up normally from the vxroot disk.
    touch /etc/vx/reconfig.d/state.d/install-db
#This will stop volume manager from starting up in a normal mode. Basically stops all the volume management stuff from interferring
remove the root entries in /etc/system for veritas (e.g. rootdev:/psuedo/vxio@0:0 and set vxio:vol_rootdev_is_volume=1)
#this line tells solaris that the root volume is a veritas device. Without this removed Solaris will try to mount up the root disk as a veritas volume and fail.
    cp /etc/vfstab /etc/vfstab.old
    cp /etc/vfstab.prevm /etc/vfstab
#replaces the /etc/vfstab file with the pre-volume-manager one
    reboot the system.
It will now reboot without volume manager. Boot it all up to make sure there are no problems / errors, the do an init 0, then a boot cdrom - install or whatever to install solaris. upgrade solaris.
Machine will then reboot after Solaris has been upgraded. Re-install volume manager (might not be required if you're on the same solaris version) and re-encapsulate the root disk. Initalise the root-mirror, and mirror the root disk to the mirror (after the 2 reboots that volume manager needs)
Much easier to do the upgrade this way ;)
There are some infodocs on this procedure on the support.veritas.com knowledge base as well, if you want the `preferred veritas endorsed` method..

  • Upgrading Solaris 8 to Solaris 10 on SUN Sparc E2900 server

    Hi,
We have a Sparc E2900 server which has Solaris 8 & Veritas Volume Manager 4.0. UFS & VXFS filesystems are under Veritas control.
We are planning to upgrade Solaris 8 to Solaris 10.
    My questions are as follows
    1) Can we upgrade from Solaris 8 to Solaris 10 directly ?
    2) If Yes does Solaris 10 support Veritas Filesystem ?
    3) Which is the best site to get information regarding upgradation ?
    Regards,

    2) If Yes does Solaris 10 support Veritas Filesystem ?No, it dows not. If you want to use VxFS you still need to have Veritas products installed on this server

  • Upgrading Solaris 9 to Solaris 10

Hi, I need to upgrade my workstation from solaris 9 to solaris 10 by CD. And also upgrade solaris 8 to solaris 9.
Do u have any idea how to do it? Can giv step by step?
    Thanks
    regards,
    raymond

You do not need to use liveupgrade to upgrade, unless you want to learn it--it's complicated. It's good for servers and if you wish to go back to pre-upgrade. You need plenty of spare disk space.
First backup your data on your system to another hard disk or DVD.
Then stick in the installation DVD and select "Upgrade" instead of "Initial Install" when asked.

  • Upgrade Solaris 2.5.1 to 2.6

    Hi all,
I am very new and unfamilliar with the SunSolaris OS ; actually I was recently upgraded from Oracle Developer/Analyst to Oracle DBA.
So I have a server (which I access remotely) with Solaris 2.5.1 , and I need to install Oracle 8i(8.1.6.0) on this server; according with the Oracle documentation I must use Solaris 2.6 or higher. And I am asking for your expertise about an upgrade package. Maybe somebody can give me some directions(the more detailed the better) where from do I get the upgrade package(if exists) or do I need to do a brand new installation ? If package , can I transfer the files and apply them like patches or I need a original cd placed into the server cdrom.
As you can see I am kind of lost and I appreciate any help.
    Thanks
    Lori

To upgrade your server from Solaris 2.5.1 to Solaris 2.6, you will need a Solaris 2.6 cdrom disc. You cannot apply patches to the system to make it equivilent to a Solaris 2.6 system.
To start the upgrade procedure, shut the system down to the ok prompt, example:
    /usr/sbin/shutdown -g0 -t -i0
When the the system is shutdown completly, you will have a command prompt labeled "ok". Insert the Solaris 2.6 cdrom disk. At the ok prompt, type:
    boot cdrom
This will boot the system from cdrom and start the Solaris 2.6 installation program, which should give you an option to upgrade the already existing installation of Solaris.
For more info on the installation process, see

  • Upgrading Solaris OS (9 to 10)  in sun cluster 3.1 environment

    Hi all ,
I have to upgrade the solaris OS 9 to 10 in Sun cluster 3.1.
    Sun Cluster 3.1
    data service - Netbackup 5.1
    Questions:
1 .Best ways to upgrade the Solaris 9 to 10 and the Problems while upgrading the OS?
2 .Sun Trunking support in Sun Cluster 3.1?
    Regards
    Ramana

    Hi Ramana
We had used the live upgrade for upgrading Solaris 9 to 10 and its the best method for less downtime and risk but you have to follow the proper procedure as it is not the same for normal solaris. Live upgrade with sun cluster is different . you have to take into consideration about global devices and veritas volume manager. while creating new boot environment.

  • Sun Java Application Server 8.1 Upgrade Solaris 9 to Solaris 10

I have Sun Java Application Server 8.1 (version 8.1_02 (build b06-fcs) ) and HA which are currently installed on Solaris 9 box (Sparc).
Now, I plan to upgrade Solaris 9 to Solaris 10. What should I need to do before and after migration?
    Thanks.

Before I start, disclaimer -- I have no knowledge of Hibernate and the following comments are based on the stack trace you have included.
I think your permissions might be set all right but you might have an error in the hibernate query. It looks like hibernate uses antlr to parse the queries. While parsing the query, antlr is encountering an exceptional condition and is trying to exit the VM (by calling System.exit()). Obviously, the hibernate code does not have that permission and therefore the exception is logged.
My guess is if you fix the query such that hibernate/antlr can parse it, you will not run into this error.
    Hope this helps,

  • Upgrading Solaris with Zones installed

So Solaris 5/09 was released. Previously I have upgraded Solaris the simplest way by simply downloading the DVD, throwing it in and running the upgrade. However that was before we started using the zones feature and I'm not sure if there is anything special I have to take into account now.
They're simply native zones. Is there anything special I have to do or will the simple disk upgrade work still?

Upgrading 10/08 to 5/09, including zones, should be very clean, with or without Live Upgrade. The advantage is Live upgrade is minimal downtime and a safe backout if the upgrade does cause something to break. If you use ZFS root filesystems, it is even easier and 'wastes' very little disk space.

  • Live Upgrade 2.0 (from Sol8 K23 to Sol9 K05

Installed LU 2.0 from solaris 9 CDs
Created a new BE (= copy of my Sol8 K23)
Start upgrade on my inactiive BE to Sol9
    insert Solaris 9 CD 1of2
    luupgrade -u -n <INACT_BE> -s /cdrom/sol_9_403_sparc/s0
    --> runs fine
    eject cdrom
    insert Solaris 9 CD 2of2
    luupgrade -i -n <INACT_BE> -s /cdrom/sol_9_405_sparc_2 -O '-nodisplay'
After a few questions, the upgrade starts,
it first upgrade Live Upgrade ok,
    then it start upgrading Solaris,
    it than fails .
I checked the logs on the <INACT_BE> and found in
    /var/sadm/install/logs/Solaris_9_pacjages...
it failed on installing SUNWnsm (Netscape 7) because already installed !!
It is right that I had SUNWnsm on my Solaris 8 system!!
Why is this causing LU to fail ?
It should just skip that package and go to the next
For the sake of it I deinstalled netscape 7 of my <INACT_BE> using pkgrm -R
I then restarted the LU using CD 2of2 , now it goes further but fails on package SUNWjhrt (java) which also existed !!
Do I miss something or is LU just unusable ??Thanks

    Fred,
I personally have never read that caveat, what is recommended is to always run the same version on components that use the same firmware bundle, in other words....  For a B series upgrade, you need the Infraestruture bundle (include firmware for Fabric Interconnects, IOMs and UCSM) and also need the Server bundle (which includes the firmware for the CIMC, BIOS and Adapter).
Bottom line, the recommendation is to run exactly the same version for components that use firmware that come from the same bundle BUT,  UCSM 2.1 introduces an enhancement: "Mixed version support (for infra and server bundles firmware) "  wich allows the combination of SOME infraestructure bundles with some server bundles.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/release/notes/UCS_28313.html#wp58530 << Look for
    "Operational enhancements"
These are the posible configurations I am aware of:
2.1(1f) infrastructure and 2.0(5a)+ server firmware
2.1(2a) infrastructure and 2.1(1f)+ server firmware
    I hope that helps.

  • Upgraded the Database from 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.2 including statistics

    Hi,
Recently I have upgraded Few Servers from 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.2 on Sun Solaris 64Bit X86.
    BANNER
    Oracle Database 11g Release 11.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Production
    PL/SQL Release 11.2.0.2.0 - Production
    CORE    11.2.0.2.0      Production
TNS for Solaris: Version 11.2.0.2.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 11.2.0.2.0 - ProductionBefore the Upgrade We generated the stats at system level and Schema level and exported the stats into Table.
    Database Upgrade was done successfully
    Upgraded the System stats
Upgraded the Stats table and imported back to Schema's
Tested with Queries and they were OK
But some of the Queries which have DB Links started taking Hanging and seen wait events
    WAIT #18446741324892168800: nam='asynch descriptor resize' ela= 3 outstanding #aio=0 current aio limit=4294967295 new aio limit=261 obj#=-1 tim=581083891935
    WAIT #18446741324892168800: nam='SQL*Net message to dblink' ela= 4 driver id=1413697536 #bytes=1 p3=0 obj#=-1 tim=581084016896
WAIT #18446741324892168800: nam='SQL*Net more data from dblink' ela= 22 driver id=1413697536 #bytes=4 p3=0 obj#=-1 tim=581084030942 So I raised call with Oracle and gave me patch for fix "asynch descriptor resize" but the problem still exist with below wait events
    WAIT #18446741324892168800: nam='SQL*Net message to dblink' ela= 4 driver id=1413697536 #bytes=1 p3=0 obj#=-1 tim=581084016896
WAIT #18446741324892168800: nam='SQL*Net more data from dblink' ela= 22 driver id=1413697536 #bytes=4 p3=0 obj#=-1 tim=581084030942 Normally in the 10g this Query used to come out under second
So I used the Hint 10.2.0.4 in the Query and the output came under second.
So I updated the optimizer feature parameter to 10.2.0.4 and then Queries started working fine.
In the Test Environment I was able to reproduce the same problem.
    Test Case
Took the physical copy for the Upgraded DB
Run the same Query with 11.2.0.2 optimizer and saw the same problem
    Deleted the Schema level stats
    Generated the new stats
Executed the same Query(Out came under second)
Oracle Support Still working on this issue
As any one has faced this issue.
    Regards
    NM

    You can do this also
    1. Export 3 schemas with grants=y rows=N and import the data schema structure with grants
2.Check the log file for missing roles and create those roles using from dba_role_privs..etc
    3. Import the data ignore=y option
    Hope this helps

  • TS1363 I was upgrading iPhone OS from 5.1 to 5.1.1 on Win 7 using iTunes 10.6.1.7.  The iPhone hung.  It is no longer visible by iTunes on Win 7

While upgrading iPhone OS from 5.1 to 5.1.1 on Win 7 using iTunes 10.6.1.7, the iPhone hung.  I could not get iTunes to find it and Win 7 does not see it.
When I connect the iPhone to the USB, Win 7 issues the welcome sound, but that is it.  The same happens when I disconnect iPhone.
The Devise Manager has the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver correct without any problem.  I updated this driver called usbaapl64.
    The iPhone is still hung.
    I restarted the iPod service
I restarted the Apple Mobile Device Service
I tried to empty and delete the temp directory in C:\users\myname\AppData\Local\ but could not
The iTunes I am using is the latest version
I updated the Apple Mobile Device Driver as stated above correctly
The iPhone is still hung and is not recognized by Win 7 or iTunes, so I cannot restore the OS to the previous working version
What else can I do to restore the previous working OS on my iPhone 4

I was connecting the iPhone 4 to a USB 3.0 port.  I was told by Apple Express Support (at US$29.99) not to use USB 3.0 and to use USB 2.1 instead.
If you are connecting your iPhone to the computer using a USB 3.0 port, disconnect it immediately.  iPhones will lock up if you try to update while  using a connection through a USB 3.0 port.
Disconnect the iPhone from the computer
Go to Device Manager and find the connected USB port.  Click the mouse right button and update the driver
Shut the iPhone by pressing the sleep button and the home button concurrently for some time
Move the USB cable to a USB 2.1 port or older without the iPhone.
    Restart iTunes.
    Connect the iPhone
Your computer should recognize the phone and reloads the correct USB 2.1 driver (Apple Mobile Device)
Then iTunes should recognize the iPhone and starts reloading the firmware.
When that is complete it may ask if you wish to restore, naturally you say YES
    iTunes will restore the iOS
Using iTunes, restore the latest backup to get your data back.
When all of the above is completed.  Start enjoying your iPhone.
If the above does not work.  Throw your iPhone out of the window and get a replacement Android phone.

I upgraded MacbookPro 2009 from 10.6.8 to Yosemite 2 weeks ago. My iphoto is now a nightmare. i went to our local apple retailer but they could not help either. Perhaps someone can help. Beforehand the OS upgrade I made a backup copy of my Iphoto library onto an external hard drive. Lets call it BU with 50GB. I also deleted half of my photos from the default library on my laptop, lets call it DE, now with about 20GB, to gain space. I then upgraded to Yosemite.
I have also installed since a long time Iphoto Library Manager 3.8.6. (this may be the cause of the problem as it was not upgraded and perhaps thus not compatible with iphoto 9.6 which I have now after the upgrade to Yosemite) It all worked fine before the upgrade, switching in iphoto between the two libraries DE and BU.
It also worked fine after the upgrade for a few days. At one stage Iphoto asked me to upgrade the iphoto version as it otherwise could not read the photos when I tried to load the BU library into iphoto. I did click yes to upgrade iphoto. As a result I became a brand new but totally empty library, no photos.
BU was still on the external disc, however the "Master" file was empty. We fortunately discovered all photos were in another file called Old Master, also under BU. We made another copy of the Old Master file onto the external disc. Lucky we did, because shortly afterwards we could not open anymore the BU file thus had no access to anything in there. Now I have 17000 photos in a file called Old Master on my external disc and another smaller library  DE on my laptop. When I tried to import the photos from Old Master into a new iphoto library it was very messy. All events dates were mixed up, many photos were imported twice. I have no idea whether all my 17000 photos have been imported.
Can anyone suggest what is the most time efficient way? How do I best import my 17000 into a new library ensuring I don't loose any in the process. I do not wish sorting through 17000 photos for a week or so. Shall i also get a new iphoto library version now? Thank you for anything that may work.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • Upgrade ONS15454 MSTP from 7.0 to 9.8

    Hi all
I would like to some help that customer need to upgrade ONS15454 MSTP from version 7.0 to 9.8. So, I may need some help
    1. how to upgrade it ?a
    2. Is it possible to direct upgrade to 9.8?
    3. I saw many file information in cisco web site, and which one i must to download it ? ( ONS 15454 R9.8.0 System Software for MultiService Transport Platform, ONS 15454 R9.8.0 System Software for Multiservice Transport Platform - Lite Version for TCC2P/TCC3 -WSON) I do not know which one is to using
    4. what should i know that my card support version 9.8? In my idea, i think it should be support but i may need confirm or information from this before. (my card have OSC-CSM, OPT-PRE, AD-2C, MXP-10DME and TCCP2)
    5. Have any interrupt between upgrade ? and Is it upgrade in each TCCP2? because that may help when card reset or reboot. And the traffic still flow to another TCC2P.
    Thanks
    V

    1. I try to using your upgrade tool, my ONS15454 is SDH version 7.0  so, I can choose only 9.3 for destination version. It means that i must  to upgrade to 9.3 first and then go to 9.6 and 9.8, Correct?
yes it is true you go directly to 9.3.0, it is not a multi-shelf node.
please be sure that your software version is 7.0.0.
So upgrade path is 7.0.0 to 9.3.0
    2. Is  it possible to upgrade without downtime ? as my understand that  ONS15454 have 2 site (east and west), Can i do upgrade east site before  west site? and when finish upgrade east site and go to upgrade west site  after that, can i ?
becase as i understand when finish upgrade  per site all card in that site will reboot, so, i think that another  site will take the traffic without downtime. I don't sure that i am  correct or not if you have any mention please let's me know
    no not possible without downtime,
there will be a traffic hit or 10seconds or less than that, it you are using MXP_MR_2.5G cards without Y-cable protection. same for GE_XP cards there will be a traffic loss for few seconds.
yes you can upgrade east node and after that upgrdae west node, but not like doing upgrade to 9.8 for one node and another still on 7.0
    3. I don't have multishelf, i just have one shelf per site
    4.  I have plan to upgrade to customer soon, but i may need to give a plan  for them. But right now, i may confuse about the way and solution to  upgrade that include how and impact to upgrade.
    1. There will be a traffic impact on MXP and GE_XP card for less than 10 seconds.
    2. If MXP client ports are y-cable provisioned, than upgrade will be error less, in case of Y-cable protection just lock protection before proceeding to upgrade.
    3. traffic will impact as MXP cards have to do FPGA upgrade also and for this they will take a reboot, but in case of y-cable other card is taking over.
    4. As you have TCC2P card, so always select lite versions, if its SDH than SDH-DWDM.
    5. also if possible, arrange spare TCC2P card, atleast one at each site, just to be on safe side.
    6. here is the path which you have to follow:
    7.0.0 to 9.3.0
    9.3.0 to 9.6.0
    9.6.0 to 9.8.0
also please feel free to reach for any queries.
