Upgrading suggestions

I have a 7 year old Powerbook that, for several reasons, I would like to upgrade. It's been a while since I've used FCE. I do intend to get back to making short documentary films. I kept my scratch files on an external hard drive that was connected to my Powerbook by a firewire. In order to connect my camera by fire wire, I added a card and thus another firewire port. It seems that I can only do this now on the 17" Mac. I gather others have had success just by daisy chaining the camera and external drive. Any input that you could offer regarding this next purchase would be much appreciated.

Hi Frederick,
With a GL2, you may or may not be able to daisy chain it with a FireWire drive. Canons in general do not take well to daisychaining. You would have to try it in order to find out if your particular equipment would work.
That said, you always have the option of capturing to the internal drive of the MBP and later copying your captured clips to the external drive.
Or, as you know, with the 17" MBP you can add an ExpressCard34 for an additional FireWire bus. BTW, have you considered a refurbished 17" MBP? I have a number of refurbished Macs that I purchased from Apple and they have all been flawless.

  • PowerBook G4 RAM Upgrade, suggestions

    Hello there Apple Masters
My PowerBook G4 is relativly slow since the insertion of a new hardrive. The last one, died sundely on me, and needed to be replaced. After that, for some reason, the computer is very slow. I am running Leopard and while running any kind of application, is soooo slow. I also notice a funky sound while the disk is spinning...
Anyways, so I was suggested to upgrade my RAM which is onnly 512MB. Before, I didn't need more, the machine runned really nicely/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png But now it seems otherwise. I was suggested to upgrade to 2GB, but I have only found 1GB of RAM on the online shop where I would like to order this product.
My questions would be, could you take a look at this model and tell me if this is the RAM that is compatible with my PowerBook G4, 17", 1GHz: RAM 1024MB Kingston Qualitätsspeicher, 333 MHz, PC2700 SODIMM Memory Module für Apple iBook G4, Powerbook G4.
If not, which one should I look for.
Here also a link to where you can see the picture (althoug I am not sure it actually looks like that):

Sorry if the website is in German, but I am currently working in Germany and need to buy the stuff here
I also would like to know if I can install this type of RAM my self, or if I have to have someone do it for me. Where can I see a manual on how to do this?
    Thank you for your ideas

Apple specs and Do it yourself guides got pulled probably...
Probably not a good idea to restore files, they could have trouble. May have been backed up while there was a problem and data corruption.
As for Disk Warrior, it is commercial product by Alsoft. Another choice is your AppleCare TechTool Deluxe or Micromat's commercial version TechTool Pro, but you do need 3rd party utility to take it from where Apple Disk Utility leaves off.
A lot of tips on memory upgrades to do yourself from a number of sites.

  • Safari Download upgrade suggested now on desktop

    Hello gang.
G4 digital audio bought used with clean HDD and OS 10.4. Now on the Internet with AOL for Mac X, dial up. The machine works fine and the web works ok.
Now i must understand, maybe, only I can mess up my machine. When i went to my MSN on the web, the MSN suggested a download upgrade, and I picked the safari. Now on my desk top is the 'Safari4.0.3leo.dmg'.
OK how do I get it to be the Safari browser that will go to the web as a browser, it is just sitting on my desk top. or will anything happen? I did shut down and restart the machine.
How can I use the new Safari version that was downloaded?

G4 digital audio bought used with clean HDD and OS 10.4.
Now on my desk top is the 'Safari4.0.3leo.dmg'
"Safari4.0.3leo.dmg" is only for OS 10.5 "Leopard".
The version for 10.4 "Tiger" is available from http://www.apple.com/safari/download/

  • Notebook upgrade suggestion

I'm considering to upgrade my MBP 15" Early 2008. This is the best Mac I had so far but I have some screen problems and the battery is not usable anymore.
I can't afford the new MBP retina and I'm undecided between the MBP 15" baseline or the 13" Air i7.
I'm going to use it for music production, light CS6 (no video or 3d rendering) and normal stuff. I love Air's form factor and screen (the same resolution of my 15") but I'm a bit concerned about performance in the medium - long period.
I've already tried to consider a desktop (which will be cheaper) but I really need a portable.
Any suggestion would be appreciated, thank you!

If the MB Air is good enough to do what you want it to do then it's perfect for your needs.
I'd take the MB Air any day.  Just make sure you go with the max on the RAM since you already know that it's not user upgradeable.
As for the storage space, I myself never save anything in my MB.  I save everthing externally for privacy and security purposes.  Also very convenient if the drive crashes and you need to reinstall all the programs.
If you like the 15 Inch MB Pro, why not meet in the middle and get the 13 Inch MB Pro?  You'll get the portability and the speed at the same time.  At least it's user upgradeable.
I was in your shoes when I bought my 2nd MB.  I'm still using my old late 08 MB Uni and was contemplating on buying the 13 Inch MB Air but ended up getting the 13 Inch MB Pro and maxed out the RAM at 16GB.
    Anyway, just a suggestion.

  • Media Upgrade Suggestions

Im planning to do a home entertainment and network upgrade in the next few months.  I've done lots of research, but still find I have serveral unanswered questions.  First, let me say my employer uses Linksys products almost exclusively, and without any major problems for many years.  Because of that, I bought the Linksys WRT310N router a couple of years ago. It currently has 2 desktops, 2 X-Box 360s wired into it, and 3 laptops, 2 PSPs, 1 Zune, and 2 Apple MP3 players all wireless and it has worked without so much as a hickup since I installed it.  Therefore, I would like to stick with Linksys products if possible, and the "Gigabit" speed.
I've been looking at the media hub with 1 TB of storage as a place the family can put all of our pics, videos, downloaded songs, etc into one central location.  My questions are:
1- Is it possible to limit access to certain folders to only certain users ?  While the majority of folders aren't a big deal if everyone sees, there are certain floders, pics, etc that I use for work and cannot be viewed by everyone.
2- Can remote access be setup so I (or anyone else) can add/store files from the remote location?  When on business, it would be nice to be able to dump my files onto my "server" to keep my portable media empty.  Also, my daughters that live out of town, could put their family photos on there for the rest of  us to view.
3- Is 2 TB the absolute max capacity on the media hub?  For instance, If I bought (2) 2TB hard drives and installed them, will it work?
4- What is the best way to connect the media hub to my network?  Remember, all the LAN ports are already full.  Would I better off getting some type of wireless adapter for the media hub?  If so, what?  Or should I buy some type of either wired, or wireless, adapter to plug in the X-Box 360s, then connect that to the network? That would free up 2 LAN ports, and I could use 1 to plug in the media hub.
5- What is the best way to get all this to my TV/ entertainment center?  I'm seriously considering adding an X-Box 360 to my entertainment center.  I want a DVD/CD/MP3 player (Blu Ray would be nice, but honestly, I think the days of video store rentals are about to be extinct), and I know from looking at my son's setups, they can access stored media on my computer and play on their TVs , use Net Flix, and some type of digital radio through their X-Box 360s. I don't know what else it can do, but that's pretty much all I need anyway.  Or is there a better way to do this?
6- What type of software comes with the media hub?  Can it be changed to somethng like Windows Home Server software? Is there software out there that will let me do what I want it to do?  Currently, all our computers are running XP home with either SP2 or 3.
I know this is a lot, but I've read so much, and I'm so confused.  I'm a relatively simple, computer illerate man, and change is hard for me.  I JUST got my 1st big screen HD TV, so what I get now will probably not get replaced or upgraded for atleast 10 years.  And while I know I get what I pay for, I'm not really looking to spend thousands of dollars either.  I'd like to stay in the under $1500 range.
    Thanks for the help !!!!

Get a Sony PS3 to complete your entertainment center, the PS3 is wireless ready and can function as a Bluray player and an independent mediaplayer. Plus you can play games on it.
To free up an ethernet port on your router, you can get a Linksys WET610N gaming adapter.
If you really need a centralized storage device with ability to limit access, the mediahub is not the device that you want. It does not have access restrictions. You can check out this device.
You can check here for articles about the mediahub if you decide to get it.
    Cheers.

This is where we install the new version of a product in a new Middelware Homw ,and migrate all the metadata from the old installation to the new one. • Upgrade Suggestions for new MacBook

Getting ready to purchase a MacBook Pro for my soon to be college student interested in Graphic Arts. She has subscribed to Adobe Creative Cloud.  Any recommended upgrades to the standard 15.4 inch 2.5GHz Quad-core Intel i7 to run this software?

Order it with 4 GB RAM and then install 8 GB (or even 16 GB) third party RAM.  Cheaper than having Apple do it.  OWC and Crucial are the two best sources for Mac compatible RAM.
Consider ordering the MBP with the anti-glare high resolution wide screen display.  I highly recommend that $100 option but look at it first.
A larger and faster HDD can always be installed later if the conditions warrant.
    Ciao.

  • Upgrade suggestions to improve Windows Experience Index scores on a D10

I received my new D10 last month and it is a DREAM MACHINE! Excellent build quality.
I am primarily a SOHO user (MS Office, Quicken, Photoshop Elements, etc.). I ordered the machine with the entry-level video card (256MB NVIDIA NVS290). Here are my Windows Experience Index scores (Vista 64):
    Memory = 5.0
    Graphics = 3.4
    Gaming graphics = 4.6
    Primary hard disk = 5.9
The base score is 3.4 due to the lowest (general graphics) score. I would like to use the Aero GUI and the base score seems marginal to support a smooth and fast Aero interface. If I upgrade to the FX1700 card (like ‘biowizard’s S10 machine below), would this increase my base score significantly on my D10? I know that it is I hard to predict the graphics score without actually installing the card in my machine, but if there is a reasonable chance of improving the base score, I might upgrade to a higher-end card.
Thanks for any advice. And thanks to Erik for his earlier advice in helping me to selecting a suitable configuration before I ordered the D10.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

speed in design/photography apps will be faster with a high-end card.   my D10 was ordered with an FX 370 since (for me) it was only ~$11 more than the NVS 290.   in both photoshop CS3 and CS4, the FX 3700 kills the 370 in all aspects: RAW conversion, filter speed, refresh speed, etc.   my new FX 4800 isn't much faster than the 3700 but gives me 3x more memory, which is important working with 21 megapixel RAW images on a 30" display.
one issue i have with the FX 370/570/1700 platform cards is that the fans are small and loud.   the 3700, 4800, and 5800 are almost dead silent.   if you want a quiet card, i personally wouldn't recommend getting a 1700.
quadro cards are built for longevity using high-end components.   i wouldn't worry at all about a fan failing.

Looked through OWC, and want to know if below choices are good for my needs.

  • Some Upgrade Suggestions for the iPhone

I just got 8GB iPhone and am loving it, especially the web browsing capability. My experience would be even better if the iPhone had the following features: 1) a search function equivalent to spotlight in the iMac's (the lack of it seems a major oversight to me - perhaps one reason why business users may not be willing to part with their treo's just yet), 2)ability to tag individual records in calendar or contact list as hidden (this will enhance protection of confidential information beyond - by the way the Treo has that capability too), 3)ability to synch smart groups on the desktop address book. Hopefully Apple will address these issues in upcoming software updates.

  • Memory Upgrade Did Not Seem To Help Much

I just upgraded the memory on my Power Mac G4 with a System 512 MB 168 DiMM 64MX64 SDRAM PC133 CL @ UNBUFF card that was the largest recommended for my machine by Crucial. This put the memory at 896 MB. The machine seems to be running a little better but I am not real pleased with the speed. I thought it would be much faster with the upgrade. I remember reading that if I increased the memory by 512 MB I needed to install two 256 MB cards. Since Crucial recommended the card I installed it anyway. Could this be the problem or is something else likey going on here? I just designated my external hard drive as the startup disc prior to the upgrade. The new starup disc is a 120 GB Edge DiskGo. The CPU Speed of the computer is 400 MHZ. I am running Tiger.
I don't know whether I need to return the 512 card and get two 256's or if I should add even more memory. Or, is this the best I am going to do with this machine unless I look at even more hardware upgrades. I have put just about all the money I planned to into the machine. Please advise.

    Yeah
Crucial RAM is usually more expensive than other RAM manufacturers/suppliers, but that is because the RAM is of compatible quality for Macs.
$90 is, somewhat expensive for a 512 MB RAM stick, but, again, it's going to work in your Mac with, hopefully, no issues (RAM can go bad regardless of whom it's purchased from).
That said, the more RAM the better.
If you can't afford to install the full 2 GB of RAM immediately, at least splash out for another 512 stick of RAM to punp the Mac up 1 GB. Add the rest of the RAM as time and funds allow.
If your main internal drive is full or getting full, your G4 can take and additional internal IDE drive.
internal drive will be so much faster than external FW drive.
    Again, it's cost.
I am assuming that the full internal drive, in question is your G4's original OEM internal drive.
    It's either a 10, 20 or 30 GB drive.
You didn't mention what your Mac's internal drive size is so I'm guessing here.
A 10 GB doesn't leave very much room for large amounts of data storage. A 20 GB drive is OK, But if you filled either a 20 or 30 GB drive, it's also time to think about, again, spending some cash and add a new/larger internal drive.
An 80 GB drive will cost around $60-$70 Dollars US..
Your Mac can take up to a 120 GB drive. The cost will be around $90, also.
So, to get better performance and more storage internal to the Mac you'll be spending between $160-$200 US..
The installation of the drive isn't that difficult and drive manufacturer will have detailed instructions of how to install into a Mac.
You can choose just to use the new drive as data storage or you could partition the drive and use part of it to install a clean version of OS X (or use CarbonCopy Cloner to make a copy of your existing OS X system (assuming every is running AOK) and use the rest of the drive as storage.
I think the addditional 512 MB memory and drive upgrade is worth it, IMHO.
You mentioned that you really want to run multiple programs, though.
With 1 GB of RAM, you may be able to run, perhaps, two, maybe three, data/RAM intensive apps, and that's probably going to be all.
Again if you want to run, say, five or six apps at one time, depending on how data/RAM intensive they are, more RAM, in in some cases, more HD space, make this doing easier.
I don't think splashing out cash to make some modest improvements to your older G4 is a waste of time/money.
    Especially, these particular upgrade suggestions.
Now, if we were talking about something like a CPU upgrade, then my opinions would be a bit different as the costs of adding additional RAM, HD and CPU upgrade would put you in a position of maybe looking and considering purhasing a newer Mac with better specs than your G4. Something like a newer G4 model, newer G4 iMac, G4 eMac or maybe look at the last generation G5 Power Macs or iMacs.
But, I digress, the decision to make these more modest upgrades is up to you in the end.
I bought and purchased one of the last of the remaining G4 1.25 Ghz MDD models about a year or so, ago. As of recently, I just put in 1 more 512 MB RAM stick to max out my RAM to 2.0 GB.
I put in a larger internal HD (I use an existing external FW 120 GB drive I had with my previous Mac) and I upgraded my G4's video card. The original video card was fine, but I wanted DVD's to play with better screen quality on my Mac and I wanted better screen response and redraws with certain graphic/image apps.
So, the video card purchase was more of "luxury" upgrade,
not a needed upgrade, per se.
You asked for some direction for making your particular Mac speedier as you didn't think that the one 512 MB stick really didn't add all that much speed.
Your G4 can get speedier, but only by throwing some more cash at it.
Just as long as you feel your not overdoing it.
My general guidelines for doing Mac hardware/software upgrades is if the immediate upgrade costs are $500-$600 and above, it might be time to,at least, look at newer Mac alternatives, either newer/used or brand new Macs to compare costs/features before proceeding with any more upgrades to an older Mac system.

    Windows 8.1 upgrade suggestions:
There are some important steps to take prior to doing the upgrade.  Review this MS posted document. Be sure to run the upgrade assistant.
Be sure that Windows 8 has all of the latest MS updates installed. There are prerequisite patches that are required.
Be sure that you have at least 40 GB of hard disk free space.
Back up your data to external media.
Make a Windows 8 recovery media to external media before doing the upgrade.  I prefer to use a third party hard drive imaging program.
    Temporarily disable the antivirus software.
You will need to reinstall your programs after the upgrade so make note of which ones are required.
Check the HP Support site for Window 8.1 updates for your particular PC.  If you don't see any updates then your PC has not been tested/certified with Windows 8.1.

I've been running 64-bit Windows 8 Consumer Preview very nicely for several months and want to upgrade to 64-bit Windows Pro on my Pavilion a1440n. When I've tried to install from within the OS I get weird messages indicating that it can't be installed on a USB Flash drive (which I'm not trying to do). When I tried doing a clean install I got an odd message saying that certain installer files were missing and it would not complete. I called Microsoft customer support and the agent there thought my cpu would work because it wouldn't support Hyper-V, even though I understand that it optional. From running coreinfo.exe I can see that I have the PAE, NX, and SSE2 on the cpu enabled as meets requirements.
When I ran through th HP site I saw that this machine has not been tested. Is there any way of getting confirmation that Windows 8 Pro 64-bit will or won't run on my machine? The HP Product code for it is ER904AA#ABA.
    Thanks!

  • Upgrading from OS 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard

Hello, I've heard mixed reviews from people at the Apple store to people on the street whether it's possible to upgrade directly from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. Below are my specs, and I'd love to hear a second opinion from someone!
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 3 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B08
    SMC Version: 1.7f10

You should be able to upgrade the OS X to Snow Leopard with the less costly upgrade DVD
from Apple; that won't give you the newer iLife, or iWorks, but it would be a full install disc.
The computer should see an upgrade in RAM, too; 2GB probably is minimal, and this can be
a concern if you also have a jam-packed hard disk drive and no working free space for the
system or applications to use the OS X's automatic Virtual Memory, based on available space.
An upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard will invite issues and problems from third-party
applications not written to run in the later OS X version; you may have to buy/upgrade them, too.

Anyway, the upgrade by itself on a new or 'secure erased' HDD may work just fine.
The hardware upgrade suggested (RAM, larger hard disk drive) would help. Also,
if there are any pending Firmware updates available, be sure to install them, too.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • OS 10.7 system upgrade failed can't redownload it

I am helping a friend with a MacBook Pro. She has 10.7.4 installed, and I told her how to do the five upgrades suggested by the updater. I was with her when we started the download, and then I left. She contacted me later and said that she had a screen telling her that the upgrades had failed and that she should download them again. However, if one goes to the system upgrade system prefs panel and clicks upgrade, nothing happens. When the button for manually checking updates, nothing happens. When I changed the frequency of checking for upgrades from one week to one day, nothing happens the next day
When I go to the "About this Mac" menu item and click on the Software Update button, I get a window that tells me that there are 5 upgrades available for the computer, but clicking on the box there to get those upgrades does nothing.
She wants to get on the cloud with her new iPad mini and this computer, but she can't because she can't upgrade email. She can't upgrade iTunes to 11, as required by her iPad mini (she has a much older version of iTunes because she never used it before) because it requires a new version of 10.7.
Any ideas about how to get the computer to respond to the request for upgrades.
I read in other forum responses to upgrade problems that one can go to the manual upgrade page, but I couldn't find what she needed via the links provided.
If a new system install is required, her current system is an upgrade purchased through the Apple Store. How hard is it going to be to do a clean install via the net?
Sadly she has never used Time Machine.
I don't have the specifics of her machine, but it is a 2 1/2 to 3 year old MacBook Pro

She can download the standalone updaters at support.apple.com/downloads/.
