Upgrading to 10.3.9 - will I lose stuff on HD?

I want to upgrade to OS 10.3.9 (from 10.2.8) Will everything get wiped out? Do I need to back up everything up first... or... will everything on my HD/desktop still be there after upgrading?
Also, any comments on 10.3.9? Problems? Is the upgrade free? Thanks.

Hi Denise!
Before one does any upgrade, a proper backup is recommended, as there is always a possibility of unforseen issues.
If you do a Simple Upgrade or an Archive & Install, of Panther, choosing to Preserve Users & Settings, your information should be preserved.
But, as I said, do a backup first!
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
Once the OS X version is installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.7 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
A Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
More info here Tip: Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that.
And then use the 10.4.7 Combo Update.
You'll find System Requirements in these links:
Panther
Tiger
Additionally,
"Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

If I upgrade to ios 5, will I lose my apps and music?

Only if the apps and music are not in the iTunes library of the computer on which you do the update.  See:

  • Will i lose stuff when i upgrade to 4.5?

I have a few hundred songs, about 20 pics, and a few apps i've bought and paid for, will i lose this stuff when i upgrade??????
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you hit the Advanced button in the Application Loader and choose the option to backup the device data, all of the data will be backed up, and when it finishes updating the OS, the data will be restored for you.

  • Will I lose stuff?

I've done something bad to CS4. When I open CS4 it appears right at the bottom of the screen, and I can't move it or open any files or even close it.  My question is if I re-instal CS4 will I lose all the saved versions of my current project, or will they be safe?

While everything is correct, make a backup to a USB or 2nd internal hard drive
Hardware crashes or virus infections or simple software problems happen, so you should buy AND USE software to make a full backup of your hard drive to an external USB hard drive... plus, making step-by-step backups during a new setup or major program addition makes it easy to go back a step if something doesn't work
This backup and then restore is, of course, only to the same computer with a new drive (or the same drive as long as you don't mind writing over everything) since doing a restore to a new computer won't work due to Windows and many programs having activation information that is keyed to your hardware (which is why Windows will force you to RE-Activate if you change very much hardware)
The product I use is at http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-linux.htm
Image runs off of a bootable CD via Linux (the Zip you download includes a program to make the bootable CD) and it reads EVERYTHING on the drive, even the hidden registration information, so everything is restored when needed... and you may restore the image to a brand new drive in case of a crash, and not have to re-install anything

  • If I use a family member's upgrade in the family plan, will they lose their unlimited data?

Hi there. So since my birthday is next week, and I'm on a family plan with my parents and 2 brothers, they're letting me use someone's upgrade to get the iPhone 5 since my upgrade isn't due until November. The upgrade that's available now is my older brother's. He is so paranoid that if I use his upgrade, he'll lose his unlimited data. Is this true? I know that I'll lose mine, which is fine, but he does a lot of stuff with his iPhone and doesn't want to lose it yet. So if I use his upgrade, will we both lose the unlimited data or just me?

Actually the way I understand it, your brother will lose his unlimited data but you will retain yours.
Because the upgrade is coming from his line, that line of service must select a tiered data plan.
Your line is, in effect not changing (you will just be activating a different phone) so the data plan is not affected.
Hope this clears it up for you.
    Good luck & Happy Birthday

  • Logic Express 8 glitches with Mountain Lion - will I lose stuff if I re-install?

I use Logic Express 8, but it has been acting up since I upgraded my iMac from Leopard through Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. The sliders for navigating around my song projects are not working properly, which makes it difficult to zoom in on details. The program also crashes every time I use Flex-Time. Anyone know why this is and what I should do? I have a large amount of stored music projects on my Mac and, although they're backed up on Time Machine, I'm afraid that if I re-installed Logic Express 8 I might lose all this material and have nightmares getting it back.

    No

  • I have to restore my phone but if I do on another laptop will i lose stuff?

I am in Singapore right now on my AT&T iPhone...just on a trip, still legally activated and whatnot.
My dad's laptop is here but not mine, and something happened and I have to restore it, however I have many photos and notes that I kept for this trip that I really don't want to lose.
If I sync it to his laptop will it copy all of my notes AND photos onto it then when I finish the restore on it, it will restore from that specific backup? I just really don't want to lose anything.
    Thank You so much!!!!

no, it's just messed up for some reason and the screen keeps flashing sometimes and i cant click on any of the buttons to do anything.
however, i can connect it to my dad's comp. to restore it, but im asking if it will keep my notes and photos...i dont care about my songs/vids b/c i can put that when i return, i just dont want to lose my notes and photos. that's it.

  • Will I lose data if I upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard?

I have OS X version 10.5.8 (Leopard).  I bought Snow Leopard 10.6.3 to upgrade my OS but have not installed it yet. I plan to upgrade to the latest OS (Yosemite) for free after upgrading to Snow Leopard.  Will I lose data by doing this?

99.9% of the time: no, but there's always a (extremely little) chance that something goes wrong, so make sure you set up Time Machine before upgrading.

  • Will I lose plants vz zombies from my ihone after upgrade to ios 6?

I have ios 3 on my iphone 3gs and I want to upgrade to ios 6.
Will I lose the progress of plants vs zombies game?
Please help me if you know the answer.
    Thanks.

    No bother at all.
Try restoring the phone from the backup created just prior to upgrading to iOS 6, but if the messages are not restored, I know of no way to restore them.
Be sure to periodically back up your iPhone using iTunes, and make sure that computer has a backup as well.

  • If I upgrade a factory unlocked iphone do I lose the unlock?

  • Will I lose anything

I am currently on OS 10.5.8. If I upgrade to 10.6.x - will I lose anything - as in access to programs like Canvas, Appleworks, etc.? I know these are old programs but I don't want to lose access to them as I have things in both of those programs that I use.
    Thanks for any insights.
    ~bruce.

One thing to remember, with any operating system install another form of loss is possible, though doesn't necessarily happen. Data loss! So please backup your data at least twice before installing anything*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
A couple clone backups, followed by disconnecting them after shutting down the machine, but before installing the software is the best preventive maintenance you can do in event the update triggers something bad to happen. It probably will not, but there is always the chance it will. So be prepared!
Oops! J.C. I see you covered this. But it can never be overemphasized!

  • If I upgrade to the latest iPhoto will I loose my photo library in the current version?

Opened iphoto today and it says I have to upgrade to new version.  Will I lose the photos in my current library?

Upgrading does not "lose" photos - but of course you must always have a backup prior to updating or upgrading
what version of iPhoto do you have? What and when was the most recent upgrade to iPhoto?
What is the exact message you are getting?

  • I need to upgrade my Macbook Pro from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. Will I lose any files on my drive if I do that?

I have a Macbook Pro running 10.4.11. I am trying to upgrade from that to Snow Leopard then to 10.7.5. I know that I have to do it in steps. My question ins this. I have a Snow Leopard disk that came with my Imac that I can use to upgrade my laptop. When I go through the process, it says something about using Timeline to restore. Am I going to lose all of my files? All I need is for the OS to be updated. Will it be safe to go through with it or will I lose all of my files on the drive. Any answers to this question are much appreciated.

You can't use the Mac OS X disc that came with another computer to upgrade another Mac because it's not supported. Buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
You shouldn't lose data, but you must make a backup before

  • HT202664 my iphoto is under an old apple ID, how do I upgrade using my current ID? The current Iphoto is not working after the software upgrade. If I delete the iphoto app will i lose my photo library?

I have a MacBook pro I recently upgraded to OSX. iPhoto is now not working as it was purchased under an old apple ID and I cant find a way to use my current ID to upgrade it. Also if I delete iPhoto to then repurchase it, will I lose my photo library?

    1. iPhoto won’t run any differently based on the Apple ID it’s associated with, but can only be updated from that one.
    2. No. Back it up anyway.

  • Will I lose my sms and notes if I upgrade to 6.0.1

I have an iPhone 4 which currently is running on iOS 6. Will I lose my sms and notes if I upgrade to iOS 6.0.1? Other things I am not worried about. SMS is a must. Please suggest a wayout.

If you are updating from iOS 6, you won't lose data. However, you must make an iTunes or iCloud backup before updating in case the update fails and you have to restore the iPhone
