Upgrading to 10.4 on Mac with CD Rom

Hello,
I have two computers networked together. I am trying to upgrade a G3 (which had a G4 upgrade) Tower from 10.2.8 to 10.4. Problem: No CD-rom drive. So I connected via server to the other G4 on the network. It will read the disc and mount on desktop but gives me the error " "The application "Install Mac OS X" cannot be used from this disk. This is a bonafide 10.4 disc, works fine on machine with DVD drive. In addition, I have installed other software from DVDs to the G4 Tower that lacks a DVD drive successfully from the same network setting. What do I need to do to install from the Mac OS 10.4 DVD? Thanks.

Hello,
I tried Target Disc mode unsuccessfully. In the meantime, I was able to borrow an external DVD drive. It read the disc fine and prompted me to restart for an install. Everytime I did that it brought up my admin account and prompted for password which I entered. Brought up screen and would not install, prompt for restart. I restarted with C key and still wouldn't install. I'm not sure what to do next. Thanks!

  • Upgrading to latest spec newer Mac with previous Snow Leopard Backup

Hi, would like very much to know if the following would be achievable.
At some point in the near future I may upgrade my Mac again from the current MacBook pro 17" unibody Intel core Duo (early 2009) running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 to either the latest at the time MacBook Pro 17", or iMac.
However, I have both a 'SuperDuper' all-files (non-sector) backup of my complete current OS X 10.6.4 partition system and an Acronis all-files (non-sector) backup of my current BOOTCAMP Win 7 64-bit partition system.
Naturally I could not bear to go through the long and painful timely procedure of spending days even weeks of rebuilding up my current dual-system and therefore would like to know the following:-
    1. Could I restore my current dual backups (OS X and BOOTCAMP) onto either the then new MacBook Pro OR iMac?
    2. If this is possible; would I then have to install necessary drivers from Snow Leopard/Windows 7 Update services or disks after restore in order to load drivers for the different CPU on the upgraded machine, i.e. my current MacBook pro being a core-duo and the newer machine likely to be an i7 or whatever is the latest at the time of upgrade and of course whichever devices are different on the upgraded MacBook Pro such as Graphics adapter, etc.
    Advice appreciated, cheers.

    Hi Diesel-X;
Instead of your plan I suggest you connect the two Macs together with a Firewire cable and boot your MBP in TDM by holding down the T key as you boot. Then boot your new iMac and use Setup Assistant to move your data and applications.
This will leave the new system on your iMac alone but only bring over the data and applications so that you do running into the problem of any system problems.

If the "it" refers to a compressed (zipped) spreadsheet that you downloaded, the ".ods" extension is used by LibreOffice and probably OpenOffice (which are free versions of MS Office) for spreadsheets, which would suggest that wherever you're getting that "Excel" file from has switched to one of those programs. I've tried opening an .ods file from LibreOffice using MS Office 2013 for Windows and it does open though with a warning that some things have been changed. I don't know if Office for Mac can normally open .ods files. But if your need is to just open .ods files, take a look at LibreOffice.

  • I bought my mac with iMovie in it when it comes time to upgrade it, it doesn't let me upgrade and says to sign into the account I bought it with, but it already came included when I bought it from the apple store. How can I upgrade it?

Like I said when I bought my mac in the apples store, iMovie was already included. When it comes time to upgrade it, it won't let me and it says to sign into the account I used to purchase it. But I didn't purchase it, it came along with the computer. How do I get it to upgrade?

Try opening the Mac App Store and go to the Purchases tab. See if you see the preinstalled iMovie App there. You may have to accept it into your Apple ID if you have not done so already. Then it should upgrade.

  • Not able to install Logic on mac with OSX.  10.8.2. Error message: Logic Studio.mpkg cannot be opened as the power pc programs are no longer supported. I have logic studio 8 software purchased in 2007 and upgraded with logic studio 9 (purchased in 2009)

After an earlier attempt to move Logic from my other mac (OSX 10.6.8) with the migration assistant to my new mac with OSX 10.8.2. I've re-started the whole start up process by erasing the hard drive from the new machine and build it up from scratch. After a new "out of the box" start, I decided to install LOGIC from my disks : starting with my 2007 package Logic Studio 8 and upgrading with my Logic 9 package from 2009. When trying to start to install 2008 I got the error message : Logic Studio.mpkg cannot be opened as the power pc programs are no longer supported.
What does this mean? HOw do I get this working under 10.8.2 as it works flawlessly under OSX 10.6.8. For sure I didn't buy a new machine to have OSX 10.8.2 but I suspect this is the roadblock to installing my logic package.
    Help!

    Mark,
    Sorry...
I completely lost the thread (I actually got confused between you and another poster on a another forum that was asking the same basic question) and somehow ended up thinking you were trying to install on a PPC Mac
My apologies and please ingnore those parts of my last post relating to the PPC Macs...
You have an Intel Mac and therefore Logic Studio 2 Boxed Upgrade set should install/run on your Mac without issue. As I said earlier.. you do not need to try and install from the original Logic Studio 1 /Logic 8 Boxed set...(It won't work anyhow because you have an Intel Mac and that version had a PPC installer)  but just install from the Logic Studio 2 / Logic Pro 9 Upgrade Boxed setof DVDs instead...
Have you tried the "Make Disk Image" solution I gave earlier? That normnally works under such circumstances as what you are describing can happen when your DVD drive cannot read the DVDs correctly... I have had this situation myself where one drive read them okay and another failed to do so for whatever reason. Making and then installing from Disk images of those exact same disks resolved the issue for me...
You can try to reinstall directly from the DVDs of course though under some circumstances it may not allow you to reinstall Logic Pro itself if that part of the original installation attempt was successful... in which case you can also try this... (It's probably the easiest method if Logic 9 was already installed and present in your Apps Folder)
If the Logic Pro App is in your applications folder..
Run Software Updates to update Logic Pro to a version that will run under 10.8.2 (The initially installed version of Logic will not)
    Run Logic
Go to the menu bar in Logic and select Logic Pro/Install Additional Content and select all content in there..
This content is basically exactly the same as what is stored on the remaining DVDs of the boxed set so you might not need to use the rest of the DVDs to install from but download it all instead from Apple Servers...

  • I have an old Mac with OS x 10.5.8 how do I upgrade to support Facetime

I have an old Mac with OS X 10.5.8, can I upgrade to support FaceTime? Thanks

    KDam,
Please allow me to make a suggestion -- I looked on the Skype site regarding system requirements for Osx.
Accordingly, they list 10.5 as an acceptible operating system for their application.  In your case I would seriously consider Skype over FaceTime.  I don't think it's worth all the effort to go through the headaches such an upgrade can cause, just to be able to use FT.

  • How do I upgrade os x 10.6.8 with a 1gb mac mini

how do I upgrade os x 10.6.8 with a 1gb mac mini to something higher (eg LION 10.7)?

Only the 2009 and newer  Mac Minis can go higher than Lion
The 2006 can only go to Snow Leopard
The 2007 only goes to Lion
For > Lion you need at least 2G, more than 4 is highly recommended

  • If I buy a mac with mountain lion and then upgrade to mavericks wil I get iWork for free, If I buy a mac with mountain lion and then upgrade to mavericks wil I get iWork for free

If I buy a mac with mountain lion and then upgrade to mavericks will I get iWork for free.

If you buy a new Mac with Mountain Lion, any included software is free and can be redownloaded from AppStore for that machine only. Some software only gets reinstalled if OS X (only) gets installed over itself to fix issues. See #8 Step here.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
If you upgrade to Mavericks usually only OS X itself is changed (sometimes the hidden User Library is also), all the  software (and user accounts) also carries over (compatible or not), and Apple's software is upgraded.
So if your new Mountain Lion Mac comes with free iWork, then when you upgrade to Mavericks it will still be there.
If your new Mountain Lion does not come with free iWork, then it won't magically appear for free if you upgrade to Mavericks.
If you need a free Office suit, I suggest you look at the donationware LibreOffice.
You will likely need to control key or right click to "Open" LibreOffice to approve through OS X's "Gatekeeper".
You will need to manually update it also, as it's not on AppStore.
    https://www.libreoffice.org/
Benefit of LibreOffice is it's completely cross-platform compatible, so you can share working files with Windows and Linux users, which you can't with iWork.
You also should learn Microsoft Office when you have the funds, because it's standardized in the business world.

Which O/S upgrade is recommended for a MAC Book Pro17 with Intel Core Duo 2.16 GHz
    I am using os x 10.4.11.
Do I need to upgrade to 10.5.xx? Will this platform suport 10.6.xx? If 10.6 will work do I need to install 10.5 first?
    Thanks...

Hi. Your computer can be upgraded to either Leopard 10.5 or Snow Leopard 10.6. 10.6 will be much easier to find and will be less expensive. Leopard is not required prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard.

It will input your Quicken PPC data file directly if it was Quicken 2005 through 2007.  If older you need Quicken 2006 or 2007 PPC first to convert your data file; and this update must be done BEFORE you upgrade to Mavericks:

Filemaker Pro PPC (in this case 7) running in Snow Leopard Server installed into Parallels for use in Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks:

Snow Leopard Server: 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A (telephone orders only)
This solution allows you to run your Photoshop Elements in Mavericks concurrently with Filemaker Pro PPC.  Mavericks is a free download.
