Upgrading to 10.8.5 killed my cMBP

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 15", 16gb ram 2 hard drives SSD in primary and swapped my DVD for the 750gb that was installed when I ordered it. It has been rock solid since I purchased it, never an issue. The ram and hard drive arrangement has been in place for over 6 months.
While plugged in, Saturday afternoon I upgraded to 10.8.5 and after it was completed shut the lid and slept the laptop. Used it for maybe 20 mins on Sunday morning and shut the lid to sleep it.
On battery this morning, opened it this morning to weird graphics gitches and an offset display, it locked hard after I entered my password. Reboot, choose not to open any apps that were open previously, and it crashed as soon as it hit the desktop with a kernel panic. Rebooted again and it seemed to work fine for a 5 minuits. I opened my daily news reader, NetNewsWire and it locked again. Shut it down, plugged it in then reset SMC and PRAM.
The FileVault preboot password screen has faint horizontal blue lines goines across the whole display. When I enter my password, the Apple logo appears and then it just stops on a grey screen. Safe mode and recovery both end on a black screen - no display but the back light is on. But the fans start going full blast and the bottom is HOT. Left it off for 30 mins but no change when I tried it again.
This has to be related to some part of the update - no other explaination. Switching from integrated to discrete triggered it I think. Now my poor mac is toast.
I have a genius bar appointment tomorrow afternoon (earliest I was able to get).
Any insights or people experiencing similar problems? Any other troubleshooting I can try on my own? I'm really really hoping Apple doesn't want me to pay for a new logic board. No Apple care.

I haven't been able to get into the diagnostic tool yet ... at this point i have to reboot and reboot before I'm able to it to boot at all. Had to cancel my genius apointment due to a work conflict - probably be a week before I can go in.
I'll keep trying to get in - when I press the D key, I just get a blank grey screen and nothing else happens - no diag icon, or Apple logo.
WIth gfxCardStatus, I've isolated the issue to the discrete AMD gpu - crashes as soon as or with in seconds of switching it to discrete.
Reading over this thread, look exactly like my issue

  • Upgrade of iPad to ios6 killed my connection completely

I upgraded my iPad to 6 and now the wifi is completely unresponsive.  Apple tells me I chose to upgrade and that's my choice.  It worked perfectly, only 2 years old, and now it is a paperweight.
I have tried every suggestion on every forum.  Spent the last 3 days non stop.  Apple genius tells me to try again.  Set back to default and 5.
Can anyone tell me if I truly am out of luck?  All.previous posts talk about dropped wifi, but mine scans and just can't find any networks at all.  Finally the battery runs out from searching.
Help please.  Apple will let me pay $249 for a new one.  Very generous when their upgrade killed it.

Does your MacBook Pro connect to the router you are trying to connect the iPad to?
Have you tried going to a site, like McDonalds or Starbucks, that has open wifi to see if you can detect/connect?
Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

  • Upgrade to 10.6.8 Killed Internet Connection

So I have been trying to upgrade our server, and I did the software update to 10.6.8, and whenever I do that it kills my internet connection. No matter what I do, it won't let me con

If your MacBook Pro is 10.5.8 as you say it is, the 10.6.8 Combo Pack will not work until after you have purchased the Snow Leopard install disc and run the software to upgrade your system. Once you get your Mac to 10.6.x, you can download the 10.6.8 combo pack, though I'd just recommend doing it through Software Updates as you normally would do updates.
Going from 10.5 to 10.6 or 10.6 to 10.7 is an upgrade and cost money.
Going from 10.6.7 to 10.6.8 or 10.7 to 10.7.1 is an update and is free.
The combo pack is made to go from 10.6.0 to 10.6.8 in one large update. You cannot go from 10.5.8 with it.

  • Upgrade to 10.4.9 killed Airport N

I bought and correctly set up a new Aiport N yesterday. It was allowing my G4 Powerbook to access the internet remotely just fine until I was prompted, and upgraded to 10.4.9. After restarting, I could no longer gain access to my network. I connected the laptop directly to the Airport, used the utility to reset the Airport and it works fine working through the ethernet cable, just not through the air.

I upgraded my three macs to 10.4.9 over the past two days. Everything was fine at first. Sometime last night they all lost the ability to connect wirelessly with the Airport Extreme (802.11n).
I just get "There was an error joining…Try Again" message. I've spent the past hour troubleshooting the problem.
They can all see it and the one that is wired to the network can even mount the Airport hard drive. I can administer the base station from the wired network and have now done both soft and hard resets but still cannot connect wirelessly to the base station.
There was one other oddity. Each time I installed 10.4.9, I had to restart the base station before the computer could mount the Aiport hard drive.
Update: sometime in few minutes since I started this reply, two of the three machines have re-connected to the base station. The one that cannot connect uses an original Airport card. Very mysterious. I might think interference were it not for the fact that all four devices are in the same room and were unable to connect for several hours.

  • Upgrade to 10.9.5 killed outgoing http connections

    Hi guys
I have a very weird problem after upgrading the system to the recent 10.9.5 version.
I can't open any website using http scheme, f.e. https works fine.
    So, `tcpdump -i en1 dst port 80` doesn't show anything at all
    and `tcpdump -i en1 dst port 443` works fine
PS: didn't change any network configuration, firewall is disabled, ipfw and pfctl doesn't show any rules that could block requests

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Major Mail Service Panic after upgrade! Customer about to kill me!

    Me again.
As mentioned in another thread, I had to upgrade an Xserve from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3 for a customer. When I ran the upgrade I discovered that the volume containing the mail database was damaged. I wasted a day getting the data off this onto another drive, then did the upgrade. Because the mail database had been moved and might have the odd missing file I used mailbfr -o and mailbfr -f at this point. Now, all client mail folders are back as they should be but all new mail is stuck in the queue. Outgoing mail can be sent successfully.
Now, I know an amateur like me shouldn't be messing with the config files willy-nilly to try and fix this without a clear idea of what's going on. However, given that the customer and his 20 staff are going mad waiting for their mail I tried to get it right by directly comparing their config files with the equivalents on my own 10.4.3 server which is set up more or less identically and is working.
I will get lynched if I can't make this work soon. Here's postconf -n and a snippet of the smtp log. Please someone look at this and save my life!!

Other symptoms since upgrade: Server Admin refuses to turn on Mailing Lists. There's one list that was in use before the upgrade. If I click 'Enable Mailing Lists' and press Save, the box goes unchecked again as soon as the screen refreshes. Mailaccess.log (as shown in SA as the IMAP log)remains empty. Like the Mailing Lists issue above, I can't change the log detail levels; they just reset to what they were before.
Anything else anyone wants to know I'll post it.
    Xserve G5 2.0DP, 2Gb RAM, 10.4.3 (u/g from 10.3.9)   Mac OS X (10.4)
    G4 and Xserve   Mac OS X (10.4)

    aha. a-bloody-ha.
I'll live to fight another day. The log entries about the stage. folder got me thinking and I realised that there was something wrong with the permissions. because I'd had to 'rescue' the mail database by moving to another volume, the permissions weren't right. Now, I had run mailbfr and watched it say it was fixing the ownerships and permissions on all this; I shouldn't have taken this for granted. The stage. folder was owned by me (admin) with read-only for everyone else. I changed it (heck, I changed the whole directory tree) to read-write for everyone and instantly mail started pouring in to everyone's accounts.
Everything is now working normally. It still bothers me that the whole shebang seems so fragile - especially in so far as the Server Admin app has at best only a tenuous grasp on the config files it's supposed to be supporting. Looking back over the past two days I can see that the basic setup was right in the first place but the manual changes I've been making in the various conf and cf files were ones that SA was supposed to be able to do for me. The whole point of having Server Admin>Settings>Logging is so you can set the log level right there - not in bloody pico via the bloody command line. Sorry - I'm tired and a little punch-drunk. It also bothers me that, having learned my humble skills on AppleShare 6 (and MacDNS), we're now in a place where none of the key components of the server are actually made by Apple, documented by Apple, or properly supported by Apple. Since Mail Service isn't a closed box with 'Apple' written on it, but a collection of dozens of interconnected third-party processes working in tandem, there really ought to be a 'master document' that shows the complete flow through the system. Most of you guys are proper experts and I'm truly grateful you're there - but I'm not afraid to admit that I didn't actually know that every message had to pass though a folder called stage. on its way to delivery and it would have nice to have been able to find that information in one of Apple's manuals. If I'd known I might have looked at it sooner.
The customer in this case is a firm of architects; they're creatives; non-technical; Apple-lovers precisely because they love the ease of use, the style and the non-pointy-headed approach of Apple's kit. I'm reminded that when this customer bought this Xserve 18 months ago, I made them buy the 3 year service contract for it. But when during the initial setup NAT wouldn't work properly I called Apple for help and they told me that 'setup problems aren't covered'. Good Grief. 450 quid. And let's not forget 700 quid for the 10.4 software.
Now, having saved myself from being lynched by the customer I'm probably going to be strung up by the very people on this list that people like me have to rely on when we get into trouble.
So, to save you all the trouble - yes, I'm a rank amateur; yes, I should do more homework; yes, I promise to keep googling and searching and reading and playing with my in-house machine... I don't promise to do a course on it since 'MacOs Server Essentials' is $2,000 to start with, and I don't have that kind of money.
Think I'd better go have a lie down.

You may want to have a look at this posting. Many owners of Xerox printers, mostly with Fiery print controllers, are having the same error with the lpd backend. The easiest solution for many was to retrieve the 10.6.7 version of the lpd backend from their time machine backup and replace the new 10.6.8 version. If you don't have a time machine backup (crazy practice when the app is built in) then a kind user has posted the file for others.

  • Upgrade to Snow Leopard has killed wifi usability

Upgraded to Snow Leopard a couple of days ago and it has significantly impacted my ability to use WiFi, tried on 3 different networks; 2 personal and one carrier and I am either unable to connect or the connection falls out after a few minutes, and when it works the speed is significantly regraded.
Prior to the upgrade I've never had a problem on these or any other wifi networks. Have tried all the proposed solutions I've found on the discussion forum but nothing seems to permanently resolve the issue.
Looking for some new suggestions or a solution from Apple. Being tethered via an ethernet cable seems so old school!

I seem to be having a similar problem but the only option I have is automatic channel selection.
I have a mini with a quickertek nCard in it running at 5 Ghz. Under Leopard I could move it downstairs and everything works great. As soon as I upgraded to Snow Leopard it would no longer work downstairs (signal shows full strength though) but will still work upstairs. Something in Snow Leopard is interfering with performance of the 5Ghz band at a distance. Very frustrating. My only option now is to get the latest Airport Extreme and hope it does better because of its 802.11n at a distance improvements.

  • MSI Z77A-G45 - Did a BIOS upgrade to 290 and it killed Win 8

Had to "Refresh" Win 8 which then ditched all my programs. A system restore point didn't work.
Also is booting of a hard drive where I had originally installed Win8 then transferred it (partition copy) to an SSD - that worked just fine till the BIOS upgrade. The refresh applied itself to the hard drive. Can't get it to boot off the SSD, even though the BIOS is set to boot from it first.
Anyone see an obvious solution? I can't seem to find the same issue listed on the web...
    Thanks,
    gny

Since the Win 8 has been "refreshed" anyway, just format all the drives and do a new install. Probably the easiest way.

  • Upgrade of my Iphone has killed my 3G

My mac told me to update my iphone. Since I did that my phone has been dead. It just shows the apple and an upload bar.
Itunes wont recognize my phone or anything.
    What do I do?

Plug it into iTunes whilst holding the home button. Keep holding the button until it reaches recovery mode... may take up to 5 minutes of holding.

  • I have Logic Pro 8.0.2 and would like to upgrade. I'm running OS Lion on a 2010 MacB Pro. What is the best option? Logic Pro 9 App or Logic Studio? Can't find upgrade price. Or should I just stay with Logic 8?

Same here, I have Logic Studio 8 and wouldn't mind staying with that version, except that the installer won't run on my new Macbook Pro as PowerPC apps are no longer supported. That's the message I get in any case.
I use to run Logic on a 2006 Macbook Pro.
I guess that makes me a very unhappy Apple user! I've been using Logic from the Emagic days, bought every upgrade only to see Apple kill what used to be one of the best Pro Audio application. Imagine if they had done the same to Photoshop, there would be a lot of unhappy designers out there
Paying the full price for years to slowly see your daily app go down in price & efficiency until it's given away at $199 for semi pro users. Well, at least ProTools is stil alive & kicking so I guess that's the way forward now.
This is coming from someone that never ever used a Windows machine to make music! Life is good still!

  • Will the APP be launched automatically after upgrade from iTunes?

    Hi All,
I noticed that before iTunes upgrade any APP, it will kill the APP first. So I'm doubting if iTunes will automatically lauch the APP after that.
Does anyone know about it? Is there any official doc about this? Appreciate any help I can get.

Have you tried the standalone installer?

  • Since upgrade to iTunes 7.4.2, constant hangs!

Since I upgraded to 7.4.2, iTunes is useless. It hung upgrading my library. After killing it, the application would start and then immediately hang. I deleted it from applications and then re-installed and I could run iTunes for about 10 minutes before it hangs again. One critical thing is that when I kill it with Force Quit, it won't die, it is still there. When I try to reboot, it hangs the computer and I have to power-cycle the machine.
I have no plug ins installed and I removed all my scripts from the scripts folder.

I tried replacing my new library with my old one. iTunes hung about 75% through converting the old library.
Did I mention that once I force quit iTunes, I can't restart it, nor can I shut down or restart my computer.
I have to power cycle the machine.

  • Imovie 4 and IDVD 6 it's killing me

I record my video in Imovie 4 and I used to use iDVD 4 and it all worked. Then I upgraded to Tiger and that killed iDVD 4. (I was told that it was uncompatable) So I upgraded my iDVD to 6. My computer is old and would not take imovie 6.
Everything works well on iDVD6 until the encoding hits the audio and it just freezes.
I import the imovie to iDVD and do all the stuff that is recommended.
I have heard that there may be some compatibility issues with im 4 and dvd 6. Any thoughts or advice.
Don't tell me that I don't have enough hard drive room because I do. I also repair the permissions.
If you tell me that they are not compatable, then what do I do? I can't upgrade because I have a slower computer, and I can't go back to Panther, (or can I) I am kind of screwed.

    Hi
    As Rich839 writes
EVEN if You use "Panic Halt" or Activity Monitor - they will answer
    iDVD doesn't respond
    THIS IS A LYE !
    Just wait it out.
Things that gives extream long processing times
    • G4 CPU - (G4 600MHz - one hour movie >> 12 hours encoding time)
    • low amount of free space on internal boot hard disk
NEVER under 25Gb free space on mine.
less than 5Gb and times get redicolous PLUS RESULTING DVD MOST probably useless
free space on other external hard disks - not interesting due to that Mac OS and iDVD
only can address the start-up one for it's scratch and temp files.

  • If I do this upgrade will I break stuff

Yes, I know - I could just make a backup first, but I'm trying to save myself the headache.
Doing pacman -Syu resulted in an unresolved dependancy issue between catalyst and linux 3.3. To get around it I edited the catalyst PKGBUILD to remove the "linux<3.3" dependancy and reinstalled. Then run pacman -Syu again, which gives me:
    dhcpcd-5.5.4-2 gnome-desktop-1:3.2.1-1 gnome-doc-utils-0.20.8-1
    kmod-7-1 linux-3.3-1 linux-headers-3.3-1 lirc-utils-1:0.9.0-13
    raul-0.8.0-2 virtualbox-archlinux-modules-4.1.10-2
    virtualbox-modules-4.1.10-2 vlc-2.0.1-1
A couple of things bother me now. Firstly, I usually use linux-ck, which hasn't been upgraded to 3.3 yet, and the virtualbox modules have 3.3 as a dependency. So, if I proceed with the upgrade am I going to:
    Kill VirtualBox?
    Kill Catalyst?
Not too sure where to go with this now.
    TIA

yes - I am using testing (I can usually fix it when it goes wrong). this was one of those rare occasions that I had the heads up stuff may break in advance, so figured I'd ask
I know my way around when stuff goes wrong (been a Linux user since Debian 3 back on my Amiga many years ago), so I'm not scared of breakages. I just find them an inconvenience.
