Upgrading to 4.2 experience - hope this helps

I, like many others, like to update the first opportunity I can. My experiences are probably similar to others.
I started the update to my iPad and experienced problems? The reason for the question mark is as follows.
The system said that I needed to do a restore before the update. I cancelled that and proceeded to doi a backup. The backup ran 6.5 hours. Long but complete. I let it run overnight. I started the upgrade and the system was updated after 1.5 hours and proceeded to do a backup. When ready to restore from I had a new empty backup. I call Apple and related what had happened, they told me to do a clean restore and create it as if it was a new iPad. Did that and still did not have my iPad back. The informed me that I had to restore from a backup and I wasn't sure which one because the old backup overwrites the previous backup. I finally found the right backup and it took another 6.5 hours to recover after several attempts when I thought it was locked up. It finally recovered and I have my iPad back.
I decided to update my wife's and had similar problems. Took 2 days.
The bottom line is, backup before updating because there is no recovery without it besides mannually restoring the apps and settings. Step 2, WAIT, WAIT, WAIT! Wait for the system to backup and wait for the restore from backup to finish. Even though the system is unresponsive and iTune reports to be non-responsive it it every so slowly doing something. To find out, open the Activity Monitor under Utilities on the iMac, highlight the iTunes application and select the Inspect button in the upper left. You will see some activity and this is proof enough that something is happening ever so slowley.

Beewacker is correct. Plugging the iPad into a system with iPhone installed will in fact auto launch both iTunes and iPhoto.
I am sorry to hear you where having so many issues with your iPad, I had the opposite experience. No issues whatsoever. Do you plug your iPad into your PC on a regular basis?
I do it about once a week to make sure I get a good backup. More backups more often seems to mean less time needed for the backup.
I do have the ABC News app installed, but it has never shown how many records or updates it has.
I wish I knew what was causing others to have these incredible backup times. I have never seen anything remotely close to that and my iPad is a 64GB one that is nearly fully loaded.

Hey everyone, I think I've had some success with my time changing issues. I originally posted this to another user as a follow up to her question, but I'm reposting it here. Hope it helps:

So i went to the apple store to meet with an apple genius to ask him why my phone's time kept moving up 1 hour everytime I synced my phone. Well he said that he's never seen this problem before, and after a trying a reset and restore he let me exchange my phone. The problem is that when I went to sync my new phone the problem still persisted. They told me it was probably something to do with my computer and its time zone settings.
So I get home and click on my computers clock in the bottom right hand corner to bring up the date and time properties and sure enought my time is correct, the date is correct and the time zone is correct (Eastern Daylight Time). So I look through the different tabs (Date & Time, Time Zone, Internet Time). The first thing I tried to do was to change where my computer syncs its internet time. It was originaly set on NIST time. I then switched it to Windows time, but this didn't do anything. My clock would still change when I synced to itunes. The next thing I tried was fideling around in the Time Zone tabs. I noticed that the box that says "Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings" was unchecked, so I checked it and my computer's time jumped an hour ahead. So I left the box checked but moved my clock one hour back (to the correct time), clicked on apply and left it at that. I synced my iPhone and voila! The time didn't change! It stayed on the correct time! To to make a long story short, make sure that you computer's clock is set on "automatically adjust clock for daylight savings changes, make sure your time zone is correct, and that the time is right when that box is checked. As I mentioned in my post, whenever I checked that box the time would be incorrect. It would move up an hour. I've messed with this along time ago, way before I got my iphone. I think this had something to do with the daylight savings change that was implemented this year or last year. I dont remember if I never tried correcting it before, or if I couldn't, but this time I didn't have any problems correcting it. Anyway, since I couldn't correct it back then, I just left the box uncheck and decided that I would change the time manually when the next time change occurs. But it seems to work fine now so all is well.

Sounds to me like you may have gotten a machine with hardware issues, but it's hard to say. It will shut down if it gets too hot, but that's not a normal occurrence. I have never seen a MacBook Pro shut down due to heat, even after lengthy 3D gaming sessions where the fans are running fast and the bottom of the machine is unpleasant to touch.
First thing I would try to do is reset the SMC. If that doesn't help, erase the hard drive and reinstall the system from scratch, which you should always do with a used machine anyway.
If a fresh system doesn't help, you'll need to get it checked out by Apple.
Edit: Oh, and sig is absolutely right... please don't post in all caps! It's very irritating.

First off, Apple you suck. I've wasted countless hours trying to figure this thing out. There's nothing like your OS failing to load after you install that piece of s itunes and then once you get it to load your computer won't recognize your dern ipod. All the while the wife and kids are hollering at you to get it done. (how in the H i became the family IT guy is beyond me. i've formally resigned after this episode). 5'rs are you kidding me?Apparently some Mac guys got bored and thought it'd be funny to screw around with PC owners. Your support is worthless. With that catharsis out of the way I found the following on the ipod shuffle discussion board. Mine works now. Probably for the moment. But i am enjoying it. Too bad you have to go through such a pain to get to.

I would recommend you copy it and paste to word or something and print it or email it to yourself so you have it when the system restarts.

I like you had many problems getting my ipod shuffle to work properly. I finally got a very helpful apple tech guy to help me, and now it works. Here's what we did (these are instructions for windows xp machines):
1. Go to apple.com/ipod/download, and download the latest software updater 2005 - 11 - 25.
2. Once downloaded, install the software updater.
3. Restart machine, with the ipod inserted in the USB port, power setting to OFF position.
4. Once cpu is restarted, go to Start -->ipod-->ipod software updater.
5. Click on "Restore" when the ipod updater window invites you to.
6. Once finished, disconnect Ipod, and turn the power switch to one of the "on" positions (it doesn't matter which).
7. Green light should come on and turn off. Turn off power switch a second time and wait 10 seconds.
8. Insert ipod back into USB port; it should automatically start itunes, which should then offer to setup your ipod.
9. It will automatically begin downloading all songs from your itunes library onto the ipod. WHen complete, you can disconnect ipod, and hopefully the thing will work.
NB: unlike other mp3 players, you MUST use itunes to download your music onto the ipod. you cannot click and drag music using windows.

I hope this helps someone. After using online support twice, 2 trips to the Apple Store, talking on the phone with Apple care, and requesting a replacement, I finally got my son's Shuffle working. Both my children received Shuffles for Christmas. I had no problem getting my daughter's to work. When I plugged in my son's it opened iTunes, but the amber light blinked continuously and the iPod would not show up in iTunes.
Here's what I finally figured out:
My computer is connected to a network drive at my place of employment. Someone in my IT department notified me that a folder called iPod_Control was on the network drive and it showed me as the owner. I disconnected the mapped network drive from my computer and that solved the problem. That iPod will not work when my computer is connected to the network although the other iPod works just fine. Very strange...

Hi...I was experiencing the same problem a lot of folks on here have been dealing with. In short, our MacBooks or MacBook Pro's showing that we were fully connected to a network but unable to get on the internet. I'm by no means a tech expert, but I just got BOTH my MacBook and MacBook Pro working. I sure hope this helps at least a few of you b/c this has been a MAJOR pain for me and it is definitely isolated to the MacBooks. I've got three other Macs and they've never had this issue. Here's all I did:
I unplugged and actually reset the wireless router by holding down the reset button for 10 seconds. Powered it back up.
Came back to my computers and once again the signal strength showed I was fully connected. Still no internet though. So...I clicked on the Airport signal strength icon in the upper tool bar. To restate, this already showed that I was connected at full strength but I had no internet. Anyway, I clicked "Other" or "Join Other Network" in the drop down list. In the next pop-up window, I entered the "new" network name. I even just used the exact same network name over again. My particular network used a WEP password, so I put the original WEP password in, clicked OK and bam!...Without even rebooting the computers, the internet is working like a charm on both MacBooks.

In the Uninstall MacKeeper thread, I learned about the Free Download called "Easy Find". This is such an amazing app. It's everything that Spotlight should be and isn't. You have no idea how many hidden folders I found in a blink of an eye, even tho Finder & Spotlight showed none.
If your going to try "Easy Find", just remember to check off a few things. See pic below.
Notice the "All Volumes" window with the drop down arrow, located in the upper right, under the magnifying glass. I'm just experimenting with this app., and I think that "All Volumes" covers everything. Once things are found, you just click on a line & then click "Reveal in Finder". Wow, so easy.
Next, if you don't want to play around & just want to delete everything, just click the red circle "Delete" and your done. It will only remove what it is showing
in the list. If you chose to only search Hard Drive or Home File, then that is only where it will delete from. That's why I am using "All Volumes".
Oh, and check out the Settings button too.

Scan your computer in safe mode for bots, malware, trojan's and viruses. Remove any Found and reboot. If Problem still exists, go to control panel, add/remove programs remove firefox. and then download and reinstall firefox. Remember to always close as many running programs like messangers and widgetts when installing any program. This should fix your problem. only other option is to do a system restore to when you were not having any problems, this works 90% of time.

I fixed my battery bug - Hope this helps

I updated my Iphone 4 to OS 5 and couple days later my battery would not make it to lunch update to 5.1 and I think it got worse.
Last Night I tried to think of the new features I had played with and the one I remember doing was set a reminder for when I got to work to check the backups.
So Satisfied all reminders still drained like crazy then last night I deleted the satisfied reminders so both screens are empty and then double tapped the button and closed all apps running.
Woot - my battery is back to working like it did on O/S 4.1, I am real confident it is the reminders not just satisfing them but deleting all of them whether location is on or not. But if that does not help double click the Iphone button that shows apps running and close all of them except mail and messages and Ipod icon.

There is another trick that I have learned. Never sync either contacts or reminders or both (and maybe notes) with two services. For example don't sync contacts with both google and iCloud. I fixed this issue and went from 100% drain in 8 hours to 25% detain in 24 hours.
This is what I did: i had contacts on google and iCloud. go to settings/iCloud/contacts OFF. It will ask if you want to delete contacts on iPhone. Answer YES. This is nerve racking. But after a little while, google will repopulate your contacts.
I think the issue is that the two services have different fields within the record, so they are never equal. So iCloud syncs, google says, oops every thing changed, so I must sync again, then iCloud does the same thing.

Hope this helps those trying to play movies on itunes since last update.

after sept 12 update, i could not play movies or tv shows on itunes. did the uninstall/reinstall of itunes and quicktime. did the uncheck 3d video acceleration under quicktime perferences advanced tab. NONE OF THAT WORKED!!! finally saw someone's post about just dragging and dropping your movie over the quicktime icon. got a error message and then waited for my cursor to stop spinning (which it didn't) and after saying WTH, I just went ahead and clicked on the play button. GUESS WHAT? it worked and i was able to watch my movies without any hiccups or problems. FINALLY. and btw, this post was on a quicktime support community. thanks apple.

So I got this email from verizon, I got my UPS tracking number.

But my question, when I tried to go to UPS's site to track it, it wasn't working. It says:
"UPS could not locate the shipment details for your request. Please verify your information and try again later."
Is it just a delay in communications between verizon and UPS or something?

UPS has not picked up and scanned the package that is all. Once scanned, you will be able to watch it's trek across the country.
I am surprised it is UPS and not Fedex, unless they are splitting between the two. This kinda changes the rules for delivery if you are not there to get it.

HT5295 How do I play video podcasts on my TV via the Podcasts app? After iOS 6 upgrade, I'm unable to do this.

I used to be able to play video podcasts on my TV by connecting my iPod touch to the TV via an Apple AV cable. Now that I've upgraded to ios 6 and the podcasts app got installed along with the upgrade, video podcasts will no longer play on my TV. It should be noted that other video content (movies, TV shows, etc) will play properly. Is there a setting I need to make that will fix this, or is this yet another bug with the podcasts app? Also, I have to say that I'm not happy at all with the Podcasts app, so if there's a way to uninstall it without harming the functionality of ios 6, that would be great.

I found a workaround that puts podcasts back in the video app as well as the music app so you can watch them on TV via an AV cable again.

In short:
1. Make sure both the music and podcast app aren't running on your iPhone.
2. Plug your iPhone into your computer and disable Podcast syncing for your iPhone in iTunes.
3. Remove the podcast app from your iPhone
4. Plug your iPhone into your computer again and turn on podcast syncing, then sync.
5. Turn off and then back on your iPhone.
After I did this, I found podcasts had returned to being listed in my music and video apps.

Hi, are you doing it through Settings or via iTunes? If doing it through Settings, try plugging it in via USB and updating with iTunes. Hope this helps.

Moduslink free Vista upgrade - order confirmed - one has hope

I now have hope that my free Vista upgrade might be delivered. Having gone through the Moduslink procedure and received the 'unrecoverablt error' message as well as the subsequent 'we cannot validate your COA number', I, like many others, was at a loss as to what to do next (in the absence of any real help from Moduslink).
However, out of curiosity I went back to the very start of the Moduslink procedure and clicked on the link 'check existing order'.

I then keyed in my COA number and e-mail address, and to my surprise it said my order was confirmed; it also gave me an 'order number'. It did not give a shipping date though.
I've subsequently e-mailed my order number with a copy of my proof of purchase to Moduslink (which they need apparently). I'm now awaiting a confirmation from them that the order will be shipped.
They have also responded to a couple of e-mails I've sent which is encouraging. They generally respond two days after I've sent my e-mail. Consequently, I'm hoping tomorrow they'll respond to my proof of purchase e-mail.
I hope this helps others. I should add that Moduslink advise it may take 6-8 weeks before the Vista upgrade is shipped but at least I have a little hope now. That said, I have not received it yet, so who knows??

Upgrading from Original iPhone to iPhone 3GS help!

Okay, I just read an article stating that it will cost a fat wallet to upgrade from the 3G to the 3GS, because of the whole contract early/late upgrade thing whatever. I still have the normal iPhone and I didn't upgraded to the new 3G. My contract has long been done and fulfilled. Do I have to pay the same crazy amount as 3G users to upgrade or will I have the benefit of buying it with the original $199/$299 price?

I think you may have some luck here. As you said, you have already completed your 2-year contract, right?
If so, then I think you can enjoy that subsidized price by opening a new two-year AT&T wireless service contract.
Still, I think you should contact AT&T to clear this ideas. Hope this helps!
