Upgrading to a new machine

I have an external drive for backing up my laptop and have been backing up with TM. However, I know I'm getting a new machine in about a month. Will I be able to continue my backups as a continuous stream where I left off?
I see two problems. First is that I'm probably going to change the name of the machine. Can I just change the folder name within Backups.backupdb to match?
Second, someone reported that a logic board swap caused the backup set not to be recognized
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1350465
This implies TM doesn't want to be fooled.
I could believe that TM doesn't want to make this easy today. But if there's no way to do this, then it's a serious design flaw. People normally upgrade their machines (particularly laptops) every 2-4 years, and saying that TM won't span an upgrade makes it a lot less useful (or will encourage people to hold off buying a new machine).

In order to continue using the external drive and existing TM backups you must use the same computer name for the new computer.

    We're now using Mac OS X 10.6.8.

    windowman,
In addition to what OldBob said, these are the system requirements for CS6:
Mac OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7. Adobe Creative Suite 5, CS5.5, and CS6 applications support Mac OS X v10.8 and v10.9 when installed on Intel-based systems.
It may be noted that 10.8 and 19.9 are inherently installed on Intel based systems, so they all apply.

Users have reported that Quicken 2015 for Mac is an upgrade of the generally loathed Quicken Essentials for Mac.
I recommend you continue your Quicken operating experience by purchasing Quicken 2007 for Mac directly from Intuit for $15.  It will open your Quicken 2006 file and operate as you have before.

  • How does FCE upgrade work for new machines

I currently have a iMac G4 that I use FCE 2 on. I want to upgrade to FCE 3.5 HD which I see no problem with doing. I am also thinking about upgrading my hardware to a new Intel based iMac someday. Will I be able to use the upgrade FCE 3.5 software and the serial numbers from my FCE 2 to install on the newer hardware?
I guess I don't see why not but thought I whould ask before making the purchase.
    Thanks

    Yes to all of that.

  • I upgraded to version 7.3.1, msg box said i had authorized a new machine

After I finished upgrading to version 7.3.1, a message box appeared saying that I had authorized a new machine.
"Machine Authorization was Successful. You have authorized a total number of 4 machines out of your available 5."
Wait, why did upgrading my iTunes application on my same computer cause me to use up a machine authorization?
The previous number was 3 and now I've authorized a 4th machine simply for upgrading on the SAME computer? That's not fair.
Has anyone experienced this problem? What should I do about it. Apparently upgrading is a VERY bad idea because it will use up your machine authorizations for no reason!

If you've ended up with multiple authorisations on that PC, the following document may be of some help with getting the count correct on it again:

  • Moving my photos and PSE catalog to a new machine... and upgrading

    H
I am seeking advice on the best way to do the following:
    - move my photos from my current laptop to a new laptop
    - recreate my current PSE catalog on the new machine
    - do both of the above while also upgrading to PSE 11 on the new machine.
The last time I did this sort of action -- moved my photos to a new machine -- it was sheer bedlum.  Hoping to avoid the pain this time.
Do I first need to move my photos to the new laptop -- recreating the exact smae file structure that I have today -- amd them export and import the PSE catalog? I want to repeserve the album structure and tagging that I have created.....
    Any help/pointers appreciated.

The recommended way to move to another computer with a new OS or PSE version is to use the built-in backup and restore function in PSE.
    - Start with a clean catalog : reconnect missing files, repair, optimize. That's good practice even if it is not strictly necessary.
    - Do a full backup on an external media (external USB drives are safe and affordable). If you have several catalogs, do as many backups. Warning ! each separate backup must be in its own separate folder.
    - Now, you have installed your PSE version (possibly a newer version) on the new computer, you can do a restore from each catalog backup. That will restore the catalog and the picture files ; if you have checked the option to keep the folder tree structure, it will be kept.
The smart thing about this process is that not only everything is restored, but if you have upgraded to a newer PSE version, the catalog will be automatically converted to the newer version ; furthermore, you have a backup!

    Edit:
This shows why a backup from the organizer is often a better solution than external backup solutions. Suppose your old computer crashes, you can restore to a new computer and newer PSE version easily. It's also a good way to update a secondary computer (a laptop for instance) to the same 'sync'  than the master computer.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Use your backup copy to put everything on the new computer.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipad- without syncing : File>Transfer Purchases
In some countries you can redownload some itunes content.

How did you "move everything" over?
Migration assistance does not handle the iPhoto library well sometimes - the best way is to drag the bad iphoto library from the pictures folder on the new system to the desktop, connect the two systems together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto on the new system - it will open and convert the iPhoto library as necessary and you will be fine - once you test the iPhoto library you can delete the one on the desktop

  • I currently have an old laptop and am thinking of upgrading to a new laptop in the near future, but I want to install lightroom anyways. Is it possible to download it on my current machine and still download it on my new laptop in the future?

i currently have an old laptop with the intention of upgrading soonish. I would like to go ahead and download lightroom but am worried when i get the new machine it wont transfer over. Is it possible to put lightroom on multiple computers from the same one purchase?

A single Lightroom license entitles you to two installations but for your personal use. There is no activation process for Lightroom, so you can simply uninstall from a computer you are no longer using and have it installed on two computers that you use. There are things to be aware of if you are going to move all of your work to a new computer. The following link will probably be of help to you.

I have an ipad2 which i am thinking of upgrading to the new ipad3.
I have purchased quite a few apps and wish to know if i can just use them on the new machine or will i have to purchase them again.

If you register both iPads with the same Apple ID, all your previously purchased apps will be available for free in App Store under the "purchased" tab.

  • Install CS 2 upgrade on New Machine

Hello!  Some years ago, I upgraded from ps 5 to CS2.  Recently, our old XP machine finally gave up the ghost.  Now I seek to install the CS 2 upgrade on our new Win 7 64 bit machine, but the install program wants me to allow for a search for PS 5 which is of course, not present on this new machine.  I have the old serial number but the installation program only offers three radio buttons, each of which assumes I have the old program installed on the new machine ... which I do not as the old XP system crashed a while back.  Any help is appreciated!  Very respectfully jivajiva on Big Wheeling Creek.

Thanks for your response, Bob.  Very respectfully, I still have the question in need of an answer.  Also, respectfully, CS 2 may not be supported by Adobe, but it certainly will work on a 64 bit Win 7 machine ...  (See http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/windows-7-comp atibility-adobe-photoshop-cs2/6f1b4955-7166-4b8f-ad9b-5d19150f803f )
However, the same problem is here:  If the old XP machine with the physical upgrade is gone, and CS 2 is demainding to "see" the former software, even though I have the old key number, there is no way I can see to enter it.  Now, of course I'd LOVE to get into CS 5, (even though I am STILL learning all I can do with CS 2) but at this time I just can not afford it.  But ... let's say I could afford it ... then again, an upgrade would "seek" (if I may) that prior installation.  In other words, this question is here for me now, with my current problem and even if I could afford an upgrade to CS 5, I imagine the same problem woujld be in effect.  "Time to upgrade..." is well ... let me just say again ... thank you for answering quickly but I hope for an answer to this question which actually addresses the question.  No offense!  I am smiling ... I am not trying to be sarcastic or angry.  This is an important issue to me.
    Thank you again
Very respectfully jivajiva on Big Wheeling Creek

  • Installing CS3 Upgrade on new machine? CS2 registered user on old machine

I was wondering if I would be able to install a CS3 Upgrade on a new iMac I plan to purchase....I have a fully registered CS2 version on my current iMac, so therefore I think I'd be eligible to only purchase the upgrade...but would I need to install CS2 on the new iMac first, then the upgrade? Would doing this affect the upgrade because of multiple activations on CS2?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Just install CS3. During the installation you'll be asked for some proof
of eligibility. You need either the CS2 installation disk or the serial
number, but make sure you have both handy.

  • After upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?

after upgrade to mavericks: time machine keeps asking for my back up disk and won't open unless i plug in the disk. any solutions?
before the upgrade, i could open time machine without the need for having the back up disk plugged in.

Ok. I got it to work, sort of....
As I mentioned before I tried the "disk password" and the "Time capsule Password" options to see if I can start the back up again or start a new backup. Neither worked. So I tried the firmware down grade, but like you said that did not work. I then decided to try the "Account password" option and I have never used this option before becasue it states that if there is data on the drive it would not be acessable after creating an account. Since I wiped out the disk that was nno problem. When I created the new account and choose the drive it asked for the user name and password. I entered the info for the new account I just created(FYI this has nothing to do with your login username and password), bingo! It worked!
Now I have two partitions on the TC disk. The old one and now the new account. I am guessing this is to be used if I have multiple computers, which I don't.
I any case, I am going to wipe out everything again and try again to do a backup the way I had it before.
