Upgrading To A Pioneer internal DVD RW

I have a Quicksilver 800Mhz(single processor) with internal Sony CD RW
I'd like to replace this drive with an internal Pioneer DVR-110 16x Dual Layer.
Does the computer have the correct cabling etc to operate this device

It's not necessarily the firmware for all the iApps and Finder, rather with device profiles.
It appears only dual-layer buring in iDVD that is sensitive to the firmware version, probably using a firmware check -- but I can't say for sure on that. Apple OEM optical drives usually have different firmware from the ones that you buy, and usually this doesn't make a difference. One verified problem with different firmware came in the early days of OS X, where drives with PC firmware would cause kernel panics on wake if you left the disc in the drive of Pioneer Superdrive. There was a workaround for this, and I believe, but haven't checked that the was later in later versions of OS X.
With Finder and iTunes, the issue isn't the firmware of the drives but rather with device profiles (files or files). Going back to iTunes and disc burning on OS 9.x Apple was and still writes and updates these device profiles as new drives hit the market -- so the various apps know what drive is installed and being used. This is why for instance the Pioneer 109 didn't have support early on with Tiger, but the 10.4.3 update brought native support (without the need for Patchburn).
So if the drive you're installing, e.g. Pioneer 110D, is too new, and Apple hasn't yet written the profile for it. Part of what Patchburn is to supply the requisite profiles for these drives that are too new or drives from manufacturers, Apple may have never officially supported. A lot people thought the 10.4.4 update would bring full native support for the 110D, but alas it's still not there -- I checked when I installed mine. I've installed a lot of Pioneers over the years, great drives which Apple still uses. (Just installed a 110D in my DA, and a K05 in my PB and Cube.) Usually get full compatibility with these -- I say usually since there is the issue of the iDVD5 dual-layer burning. We'll have to see if iDVD6 removes the alleged firmware check.
If you're still stuck in 9.x, you can find patched device profiles at xlr8yourmac. I used one with a Pioneer 106.

  • To install Tiger, some Macs need internal DVD drive, or CD version of Tiger

Some Macs while they have Firewire, don't support Target Disk Mode, nor Firewire booting. These Macs if they came with no DVD drive, and only a CD drive or CD-RW drive (as opposed to combo or superdrive), can only install Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4) if you:
    1. Install a compatible internal DVD drive from which supports http://www.patchburn.de/ or other firmware that supports Mac OS X booting.
    2. Find the original retail CD version of Mac OS X 10.4 that was available for a limited time called the Media Exchange Program CD.
These Macs include the Blue and White G3 desktop (non-iMac), and the PCI PowerMac G4 described below:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58418
The iMac G3 with built-in Firewire, iBook G3 with built-in Firewire, and AGP PowerMac G4 with built-in Firewire at least support Firewire booting and Target Disk Mode which would allow them to use an external optical DVD drive that supports Mac OS X booting.
If they didn't have an internal DVD drive.
Port #4 in this image below is a Firewire port:
Notes: Macs released on or after April 26, 2005 need to install Tiger from the discs that came with them, or a newer retail release except Intel Macs. Retail release of Tiger is a black disc with a white X logo and does not say Upgrade or Update.
Intel Macs could only install Tiger from the discs that came with them.
Macs released on or after October 26, 2007 can't install Tiger.

What happens if the firmware isn't updated?
The display may stop working, even for OS 9. It is not easy to fix.
I just installed 10.2 on one of them and it seems to be working. Should I uninstall it and upgrade the firmware and start over?
Check the "Boot ROM version" with System profiler. If the firmware is updated it will be 4.1.9
It is not necessary to remove OSX to install the updates if OS 9 is still on the hard drive. If not, and the OS 9 drivers are there, OS 9 can be installed without affecting OSX.
The update won't install if it is not needed.

  • Replacing Internal DVD RW

The internal DVD keeps on reporting failure to write lead in / out
when writing CDs at the higher speeds 16x 12x.
I think this points to the demise of my internal drive.
I have located a retailer who stocks the Pioneer DVD RW (a faster model) which should work in my G5. Does anyone know if it is simple
to replace this drive. I have looked at the Apple tips page and it mentions about 'standoffs' on the bottom of the drive. I don't think these will be included with the new drive.Has any one replaced their DVD RW on their G5 and was there any problems?
Have replaced drives in G4's with no problems at all. Just wondering if there is anything to note about replacement on the G5.
    In advance thanks for youradvice

It is very easy to remove the G5 DVD and replace it. Toady there is a Pioneer 111D on sale for $38 that will work great. See - Pioneer DVR111D $38 shipped using code CS10:
    http://www.shop4tech.com/user.htm?go=view_item&id=4962
    The steps are simple.
    1. Release the two DVD side latches.
    2. Pull out the DVD.
3.Remove the 4 pin molex power plug and the IDE cable.
    4. Unscrew the 4 mounting screws from underneath the DVD.
    5. Screw the mounting screws into the new DVD. Make sure it is set on Cable Select just like the old one. This is the factory setting.
    6. Power up the new DVD sitting sideways in the G 5 bay.
    7. Hit the eject button.
    8. Turn off the power to the DVD.
    9. Remove the front tray lip by pulling out from the bottom tabs.
    10. Power the DVD and push the tray back in.
    11. Install the power plug and the IDE cable to the new burner.
    12. Slide the DVD in place and close the two latches.
Restart and check Disc Burning in System Profiler. You
should see Burn Support: Yes (Apple Supported)
    Have fun,

  • Pioneer sata dvd-rw not recognized

I have a Pioneer sata dvd-rw not recognized problem.  I installed a new Pioneer dvd burner.  It is Sata.  It works fine, but every time I boot into Win xppro  sp3 I get the found new hardware, it lists the correct drive and has the error that it cannot be installed.  Just have to cancel that message, but yesterday I went to install a new copy of windows on another drive connected to the the pc, the windows cd booted up asked the usual questions and then started setup and message came up and said it could not continue, because there was no cd drive.  Once I quit laughing and pointing to the cd drive,   I figured I better find out if it came be fixed.  I also have a sata hard drive connected internally to the pc.  This works fine also.  If I boot to the sata drive the sata dvd burner is recognized and it is installed. Works fine.  Does anyone want to tackle this one?  I tried showing the windows cd where the  burner was and expained to it that it was inside the drive already, but it just won't listen.  The pc worked fine with the old ide drive.  Thanks in advance.

  • G4 PowerMac with Mirror Doors - NEEDS INTERNAL DVD DRIVE

    Greetings,
I have been trying to purchase an internal DVD drive for my Mac G4 with mirrored doors. All the DVD drives I've tried all have 5.125" wide doors and will not work on my Mac. The CD drive in the Mac now is 4.875". MacMall has nothing that will fit this Mac and they told me my size is not standard. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions please??
    Thanks,
    Dan in Massachusetts

    Hi-
    Compare the following two drives:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/DVR109AB/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Pioneer/DVR112DBK/
Note that the 109 has no front bezel, and slips in with no modification. The 112 has a front bezel, but, as noted by Flycast, can easily be removed, and will fit into your computer.
Whomever told you your computer is "non-standard" knows little of Mac's......

  • New internal DVD drive does not burn at true speed

2 years ago, I bought a Pioneer 8x DVD/CD internal drive for my G4. The highest speed it burns at true 1 second to 1 second speed is 6x. When I select the 8x, every second that ticks off in Toast averages 2 to 5 seconds.
Fast forward to today! I just purchased and installed an NEC Model:_NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A, a 16x with dual layer capabilities.
I am having similar issues with the burn times. Not only are the seconds lasting 2-5 or more seconds but it gets down to about a minute left and I get a drive error message. I cannot succesfully burn at 16x even with speed issues. I tried it at 12x and 8x. I get a successful burn with 8x but each second lasts 2-4 seconds.
I downloaded the PatchBurn program and tried it with no improving results.
I looked at the NEC web site and all they offer for firmware is Windows based. Is there something that needs to be done to get the drive to burn actual 16x? OR is this an incompatibility issue between PCs and Macs?
I'd be happy to read your advice and suggestions.
    Thanks. Scott
    PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    NecFlash.
If your mac is not an MDD G4, you will never get 16X burns, as the ATAPI bus on older G4's does not support the transfer mode required.
Beyond that, 16X is max rated speed, not actual burn speed across entire burn process.
Make sure your version Toast is updated to last revision (5.2.3) (6.1.1), etc.,
WWJD's comments per disc space & fragmentation are also considerations when burning DVD's.

  • Satellite Pro M10: compatible internal DVD-RW drive?

    Hello,
I've been unable to find any compatible internal DVD-RW drives on the website for my model. Is this possible? Could I get one for say a Tecra and squeeze it in to my machine, or cannibalise my current drive casing to make it fit?
    thanks,
    Michael

    Hi
Fact is that no all drives are supported and compatible with every notebook.
Fact is also that there is no official information on the website which drives are compatible.
If you want to upgrade the drive or to buy a new one so you should ask the Toshiba Asp for the compatible one. The guys should have the detailed informations about the supported devices.
I have also found this posting about similar question:

    FIRMWARE UPDATE FOR INTERNAL SUPERDRIVE
This might help. If you haven't done so yet, try installing Apple's SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0, which is on Apple's support site at http://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201953 to see if that resolves it. Although it's not specifically for that problem, the firmware update seems to be important for making external SuperDrives work in Yosemite, and it is one step I used to get my SuperDrive to work in a USB external case when plugged into my MacBook Pro.
Please let us know either way, whether the firmware update helps or not in your situation.

  • Replace internal DVD drive......

ok i know the easyest way to get past a now aging DVD drive is to just buy an external one (LaCie 1st choice).
BUT why do i want something else to clutter my desk!
does anyone know of slot loading internal DVD burners that i can upgrade to?
    Mac specs
Early 17" Intel iMac 2Ghz Core 2 Duo (Upgraded from 1.8hz core duo)
    OSX.5
surly its a matter of getting the right sized burner + what plug in interface it used and your done?

Two places you can check: macsales.com and mcetech.com.
It's possible that iFixit.com carries replacement parts for your model, but I'm not sure.

  • Internal dvd drive no longer plays idvd burned projects

My internal dvd drive has been acting strange lately. It will play mass produced dvds but does not play my idvd projects, which it used to do. Anyone know if cleaning will help? If so, can you recommend a cleaner for an imac dvd drive?
If cleaning won't help, am I better off going to apple and having it replaced, or simply buying a compatible external drive? If an external, any recommendations?
    Thanks!

You can use any proprietary lens cleaner for a DVD/CD player, except the ones using a liquid.
When you have cleaned the Superdrive, do a bit of maintenance:
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.
    Background information here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
    and here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672
An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.
    More useful reading here:
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

For a full description of how to resolve Disk, Permission and Cache Corruption, you should read this FAQ from the X Lab:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
Then reboot your Mac and try burning a DVD again.

  • Internal DVD drive is shot. Can I install SL from an external DVD drive?

Hi folks, a quick (well actually a few) questions.
I've had my imac since early '06. It's currently running Tiger, and I'd like to install Snow Leopard. The problem is that the internal DVD drive is shot. It's been occasionally refusing to accept DVDs for a while now, and now it has a DVD stuck in it (not mounted), which I can't get out via terminal, rebooting, or jiggling it (technical term I know).
Now, I'm going to assume that getting apple to replace the DVD drive will be more expensive than just grabbing an external drive, especially as I'll most probably only use it once. The question is, if I grab a cheap external DVD drive, will I be able to install Snow Leopard with it? Or will Tiger not recognise it as a boot drive?
    Many thanks,
    Chris
p.s. Also, I'm using a cheapo windows style keyboard (will be replacing asap), and I'm wondering if this is why I can't see bootable drives when holing option on startup?

Yes, you can install from an external drive, although I wouldn’t go for a cheap one. There are good, relatively inexpensive, drives out there. And you are going to need that option key to select the install disk as your startup. I believe there is a corresponding key on a PC keyboard, but I don’t know what it is (maybe Alt?). I’m sure someone can jump in here and tell us.

  • Internal DVD Drive isn't working... must install Windows via Boot Camp

My internal DVD Drive has died. Just keeps ejecting every CD or DVD I put in it.
*The real problem is that i need to install Windows via BootCamp...*
I've already defraged my Hard Drive and partioned it for the Windows installation
But even using an external USB DVD Drive I couldn't get to boot up from it
    to install Windows XP SP3.
BootCamp lets me use the windows disc that is inside my external DVD drive
and it even restarts... but after the restart chime, and the grey screen, it doesn't
start the windows installation... it continues to boot to my Mac partition.
(i've tried to manually change the boot disc in System Preferences, but it was in vain)
I also tried to use another Mac's DVD drive in Target Disk Mode... no results.
I even tried to Copy-Paste the entire file system of a Windows installation from a BootCamp of a friend but had no success making it to work.
*Is there any way I can install Windows with my external DVD drive?*
Because I don't have the cash for buying a new one right now...
And I really need windows installed via BootCamp...
    Thanks in advance,

For this problem there no alternative > I bought a new internal DVD drive and then I was able to install Windows via Bootcamp.

  • Macbook pro does not see internal DVD/CD drive

Our macbook pro 4,1 running OSX 10.8.5 (12F45) no longer seems to recognize the internal DVD/CD drive.
Both the ATA and Disc Burning listings for the MBP say there are no devices of that type listed.
This started when my wife attempted to play an audio CD-R which I had burned on my macpro 1,1 running Snow Leopard and using Itunes 11.4.  The icon for the CD did not show up and the disk didn't play.  It also would not eject.  (She had just successfully played another audio CD-R which I had burned on my macpro).  After some research, we found that the 'stuck CD' is a common problem and the solution that worked for us was cold starting with the trackpad button depressed while shaking the **** out of the computer (and giving it a few 'love taps') .... several tries without the physical encouragement failed before adding shaking ... then it ejected the CD.
So .... we were able to remove the offending CD, but when I tried one that had worked before, a commercially produced CD, it got stuck too and required the same draconian procedure to get it to eject.
I re-cold started the MBP with an empty optical drive and then brought up the Hardware Overview.  It said there was no ATA device and no Disc Burning device.  The device itself must be getting power, because when the CD was stuck, you could hear it trying to do something  when you hit the eject key, and when we finally discovered how to force ejection, the mechanical sound associated with disc ejection could be heard.
I seriously doubt that the optical drive has just stopped working.  Instinct tells me that the attempt to read an audio CD that was somehow incompatible caused the opsys to be configured in a way that makes it unable to communicate with the optical drive directly.  Any suggestions on how to investigate this, possibly from the Terminal, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Joe - but I have discovered how to free the stuck CD from the drive.
The problem now is that OSX 10.8.5 does not recognize the presence of the optical drive at all.  It does not show up in Disk Utility's list of drives/volumes and does not show up in the ATA or Disc Burning categories in the system profiler.  For example, I can insert the system disc, which the drive accepts, but the install/utilitiy app does not fire up .... not initially, nor after I cold start while holding 'C'.  The system doesn't see it.
Applecare was willing to try to assist me for free, but the agent, after helping me run the Disc Utility from the cold start Recovery System, claimed it was a faulty optical drive.  Though this is quite possible, I'm still skeptical and have a local mac guru coming to look at it (for a fee) on Monday, 2/9/15.
In some of my research regarding the stuck CD, there was mention that a CD programmed on a different drive (in a different mac) initiated the sticky CD problem, and implied that something about the CD corrupted something in the guts of the guts of the OS.  But if true, Disk Utility, which likely communicates to the optical drive thru the OS,  may not be able to see the drive.   It'd be nice if there was some diagnostic software that runs on an intel mac that completely runs independently of the OS but with full privileges to directly query the hardware I/O channel(s) that directly talk to the optical drive.  If you know of such an animal, that would be helpful and might save me from buying a new optical drive when it's really a system corruption problem.
