Upgrading to Adobe Lightroom 4 in 7 simple steps.

The following steps can be used to upgrade Lightroom 1, Lightroom 2 or Lightroom 3, as well as Lightroom 4 Beta catalogs.
Step 1. Download and Install Lightroom 4
Step 2. On your Mac’s finder, find the location of your Lightroom 3 catalog. It should look something like name.lrcat
Step 3. Right click on that file and select “open with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4″
Step 4. You should see the “Lightroom Catalog Upgrade” dialog. Be very careful with this step. Catalog names can NOT be changed later. I strongly suggest you click on “change” and determine the best location and name for your upgraded catalog.
—Click to continue
As you can see I created a new FOLDER (EAP_LR4_Laptop) and a new CATALOG name EAP_LR4_Laptop.
You might be wondering why I picked this naming structure. Simple:
EAP stands for Eduardo Angel Photography
LR4 is obviously Lightroom 4
And Laptop is the location of the Catalog, the place where all my Lightroom settings (keywords, presets, previews, plug-ins, etc) will be stored. This is especially important if you often shoot on location and need to sync temporary catalogs to your permanent catalog. See our previous post with step-by-step instructions on how to do this.
Step 5. Ready? Jump! Hit “Create” and then “Upgrade”
Keep in mind that Lightroom will create a NEW catalog inside the new folder we just created. The old previews will me moved to the new location but the old Lightroom 3 Catalog will still exist in your system. I recommend keeping this file for a couple of weeks until you have confirmed that all the images and settings were upgraded correctly.
Time for a quick coffee break. Depending on your system specs, how many images you have, the file sizes, presets etc, the upgrade can take several minutes. I have over 50,000 RAW files and 600 presets, and the upgrade took less than 4 minutes.
Step 6. We are almost there. You now see the “Enable reverse geocoding” dialog, which is basically asking for permision to access Google Maps. Even though I am NOT happy with Google’s recent privacy policy changes, I recommend enabling this feature so you can use the brand new Map Module.
If later on you regret feeding Big Brother more information, you can disable this feature under the “Metadata” tab of the “Catalog Settings” Dialog.
Step 7. Done! We have successfully upgraded our Lightroom 3 catalog into a brand new Lightroom 4 catalog.
One last thing to consider: Any new changes done in Lightroom 4 will not be available in previous versions of Lightroom. What this means is, if you are in the middle of a project, finish it in Lightroom 3 and then do the upgrade. Now is time to play.

It might be fair to warn all users for the time being that most likely they will be bitten by 2 bugs:
If you used tone curve adjustments in LR3-develop:
They will be lost, as LR4 currently does not read this record from LR3-catalog, but replace it with a default, same as if in a new import.
If you have a folder structure with more than ca. 3000 images within one folder, you will not get them displayed.
So good advice: start LR4 with new imports only, and wait for LR3-catalog conversion until these bugs will have been fixed.
Unless none of the two prerequisites for problems apply to you.

  • Using Adobe Lightroom with OSX Photos

I love the iCloud integration of the new Photos app, it's really great having all my photos available on my phone.
I also love the editing capabilities of Adobe Lightroom.
Has anyone figured out a way of using Photos for the iCloud integration and Lightroom for the editing and post processing?

Yes, from the Photos + Lightroom together perpsective.
But taking it back to the root, what is the best way to have the same benefits offered by photos (tight integration between iOS and LR)? If Adobe weren't so stingy with their cloud storage, it would be a lot simpler answer because you'd just stick the their storage and product suite.
How can someone who takes a fair # of photos on iOS get those seamlessly to LR and conversely have access to their photo catalogues on iOS when they want to show them? I think the answer may be CC Photography + Smugmug but there are pitfalls to the smugmug iOS client (does not background sync,  nowhere near as good as Photos, does not integrate with other apps where you may want to use the photos collection).

I get the message “Adobe Lightroom 1.  Cannot be installed on this disk because a newer version of this software already exists on this disk”
If it is here – I cannot find it anywhere, and I don’t believe that I ever installed it.
I have ordered the upgrade to Lightroom 5.0 and figured that I should install Lightroom 1.0 first.
How can I solve this problem

Actually when LR 5 starts for the first time after it is installed it will have a dialog to Buy, Try or Enter a serial number. You select Enter a serial number and enter the LR 5 serial number first and then because it is an upgrade serial number it will ask for the serial number of a Previous version. You then enter the LR 1 serial number.

  • Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Bridge does not recognize the raw files from my Canon Mark III 5D Camera.

Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Bridge does not recognize the raw files from my new Canon Mark III 5D Camera.  How can I get my files open to view and edit?  I am using LR3, Photoshop CS3 and Bridge CS3.  Do I need to upgrade these programs or is there another way to get these programs to recognize my files?
When I try opening the raw images in Lightroom, the thumbnails say "Preview unavailable for this file"  ... when I click "import" an error message pops up that says "The files are from a camera which is not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom."
When I try opening the raw images in Photoshop, an error message pops up saying "could not complete your request because photoshop does not recognize this type of file."
When I try opening the raw images in Bridge, it just shows an icon with the file name and CR2.
    Please help!!!

Unless I missed an announcement, today, LR6 isn't available, yet, right?  Only Adobe employees and beta testers would know what LR6 does differently at this point and they're all sworn to secrecy.
LR5 is available as a standalone version.
    PS-CS6 is available as a serial-number-licensed version.
PS-CC + LR5 are also available as a Photography Plan subscription for $10/month with a minimum OS versions of OSX 10.7 (and probably 10.8, soon) and Windows 7.
Bridge is part of PS, not a separate program.
LR5 standalone and LR+PS-CC plan are both available on this page:  http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/software.html
PS-CS6 can be found on this page:  Creative Suite 6 which can be found by searching www.adobe.com for Photoshop CS6 and clicking the Buy link in the on-the-fly search results.
As with any new Adobe software, it might be wise to run it in trial mode for a few days/weeks to see if it works well with your computer, before purchasing and finding out you might need a new computer, first.

  • Adobe Lightroom 4 - Some Questions / Help Needed

    Hi everyone.
After advice from several experts, I've just purchased Adobe Lightroom 4. I've already got Photoshop CS5, but I was looking for something proper to organise my photos, plus I found Lightroom easier to do the sort of editing I am wanting to do. Now, I only really use photoshop for things like colour pops, or really in-depth editing. Anyway, I'm loving Lightroom so far, but there is some stuff I'm not very sure of, so I'd appreciate some help
    1. Organising
Firstly, I'm not really sure how to organise. At the moment, I've just got lots of folders with random events in My Pictures on W7, so I might have a folder called April 11, which contains photos from that month but that might have been a wedding or an easter holiday or both. So it doesn't really work. \
I understand in Lightroom what catalogs are. But I know enough to know that I don't want to group mine into those, its getting too complicated. What I don't know though is the difference between a collection and a folder. Basically, I'm wanting to reimport and reorganise all my photos, so I want to put them into "events" as such like you can do on iPhoto on a mac, so I would have "France Summer Holiday 11" for example, or "Mia's Wedding". I'm not really sure on the best way to do this ...?
    2. Editing
I've played around quite a bit so far, and I really like what I've seen. On a lot of photos, I've made a lot of changes. But from what I can see, these changes are stored merely in Lightroom itself. For example, at the moment I'm importing photos from my external disk into Lightroom, which then saves them in C://My Pictures/Lightroom/Pictures . When I go look at these photos in windows explorer which I know I have edited, it doesn't show any of the changes or editing I've done on them. Now I realise this is me being stupid, but why doesn't it? Supposing I then want to email that photo to a friend that I have edited? How would I do that? I don't want to have to open lightroom and export every single photo I edit? There must be a simpler way?
Likewise for backing up, because all my files are in subfolders within C:// My pictures / Lightroom / Pictures, to back up I was simply going to set up windows to copy that latter folder onto my external HDD everytime I plugged it in. This would be pointless however if it isn't physically overwriting the original photo with my edited version?
    3. Editing 2
Something else I like to do is make lots of different edits to the same photo. For example, at the moment I'm editing a photo of a pier at night. I spent ages adjusting colours and lighting and so on, and now it looks great. But I would also like to save a copy of that photo with the "old age photo" effect preset on. Is this possible? and how do I do it? Other than obviously importing a duplicate?
    4. & 5. & 6 - Misc:
    4. Simple question - how do I add tags, keywords or comments if I haven't done it on import?
    5. My camera doesn't have built in GPS. Is it possible for me to manually geotag photos (in a batch, say for a Summer Holiday to NY), could I manually add a geotag for all these photos?
    6. I also forgot to add copyright information on import for some, is it possible to do this after import and how?
    7. I normally shoot in JPEG. I probably shoot shoot in RAW as everyone tells me to do so. Are there any significant advantages in terms of quality, and for editing with?
Thanks for any help given. I appreciate this is a lot of questions, but I could really use the advice.

    Hi William,
    1. Organising
Firstly, I'm not really sure how to organise. I am not so sure if you understand *catalogs*.
You need a catalog, exactly 1 in my opinion. A catalog is a database. The Lightroom database, where records about your images are stored, including the pointers to your images, which are not inside a catalog! LR backups just does the backup of the catalog (i.e. a file ending .lrcat). You need to take care separately that your real images are backed up !
Inside your LR database the best way to organize is via collections - this will give you what you want with "France summer holiday 11" etc.
Folders are relatively unimportant, just storage buckets. They should be *handy portions*, I would prefer them with below 3000 images each, as there currently some bugs to those bigger ones.
Before you start with LR, you can organize your pictures in Mac Finder / WindowsExplorer.
Or you could do it with the help of LR, by copying your images over during import into the destination folders (and deleting today's folders afterwards after having verified that everything is fine).
A simple date-based structure will do, I'd recommend  a root parent folder like "LR images", underneath one folder per year (\2010\, \2011\, \2012\...) and underneath them either
just one folder per month (LR can auto-create them for you)
or you create the folders in import dialog as e.g. "YYYY-MM-DD description of shoot", to have a mini-diary overview also in your OS.
Apart from that you create collections, either *dumb ones*, where you drag images into, or smart ones, where you specify criteria according to which they get auto-filled.
    2. Editing
I've played around quite a bit so far, and I really like what I've seen. On a lot of photos, I've made a lot of changes. But from what I can see, these changes are stored merely in Lightroom itself. LR will never overwrite your original photos.
You can save most of the catalog content into the xmp-part of the original photo, which is either a sidecar-file (.xmp) or part of the file format, like for DNG, TIFF, PSD, JPG. To do so you select the image in LR and hit <ctrl> s. Or you set it up for continuous update, which creates a lot of operations while you play back and forth in develop.
I do that on my own, typically twice per file: once I am done with develop, once I am done with keywording and other metadata update.
LR contains records about your images, i.e. a set of instructions how they are to be interpreted. That is all.
So of course you need LR to export the result of these instructions, which is actually pretty quick.
To backup your images you need to do that just once, plus you backup your LR catalog. Or if you save xmp to the files, you can do another backup once xmp is ready.
I would not consider this pointless. You just have to think that there are 2 places with data for your images: the images themselves and a database with interpretation instructions.
Yes, this is one of LR's beauties: you create a so-called *virtual copy*, which is just a 2nd record for the same original image file with different interpretation settings, like black-and-white, a different crop size, different development etc. You can have as many virtual copies as you like, and you'll see them as additional thumbnails.
Virtual copies are not saveable into xmp, though. There is another concept which is saveable into xmp: snapshots. but these are different states in develop history, and you do not see outside develop module that you have several.
If you export virtual copies e.g. to jpg one file per virutal copy will be created.
    4. & 5. & 6 - Misc:
    4. Simple question - how do I add tags, keywords or comments if I haven't done it on import?
    5. My camera doesn't have built in GPS. Is it possible for me to manually geotag photos (in a batch, say for a Summer Holiday to NY), could I manually add a geotag for all these photos?

Thanks for any help given. I appreciate this is a lot of questions, but I could really use the advice.
ad 4: you use the library module, metadata panel to enter.
ad 5: you use the map module. Either you manually drop your images on a map, or you have a separate GPS track to load and have LR assign via matching time-stamps.
    ad 6: like 4
ad 7: You don't need JPG from your camera, you can achieve better results viy LR from RAW. Yes, there are significant advantages as to editing headroom.
Overall, may I suggest my favorite learning material for LR? First watch Julieanne's Tutorial Videos.
Then go play and use Victoria Bampton's eBook or paper copy of her "Missing FAQs to LR4": http://www.lightroomqueen.com/books/adobe-lightroom-4-missing-faq/

I have Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom on my MacBook Pro laptop. I bought an iMac and I'd like to move my installations to the larger display desktop for editing purposes. How can I go about transferring them?

I have the same question. It seems that Adobe is almost impossible to contact (I ended up here at the forums to ask the same question).
I will never buy another Adobe product again if I can get another program to replace it. If this is customer service then it is NON EXISTENT!
I notice that your question has not been answered and why should you have to get the information from a forum? I know of no other company that makes you do this for simple product information.
NOT HAPPY with this version of arrogant customer service (nor am I happy about renting Photoshop products into the future - it is just a money grab in my opinion). I will be voting with my feet and going elsewhere in future.

  • Blocking bug with 10.8.3+Adobe Lightroom+Canon iPF5000 (but workaround found)

    Hi all,
since I have updated my MacBook Pro (early 2011 model) with 10.8.3, I have a blocking bug with Adobe Lightroom (either 4.3 or 4.4) for launching prints on my Canon iPF5000 (firmware 1.33, either MacOS driver 2.67 or 3.06, connection through USB).
When I was under 10.8.2 with the Canon's driver 3.06, everything works fine.
Basically, after clicking Print a Copy or Print... in Lightroom, the file spooled to the driver stays in MacOS printer queue. Within the printer queue window, the printer is in pause mode, and each time I try to resume the printing processing, the driver put it on hold immediately. When I look into the history on the Console, the driver complains about an unknown error... The data stay within the driver, as my Canon iPF5000 "Data" led indicator stays unlit.
My print settings are 600dpi or 300dpi, print sharpening Standard/Glossy, 16 bit output. And Color managed by printer (because I let the Canon driver managing my B&W prints).
Strangely enough, when I launch a print from Preview application, the drivers does its job and sends it successfully to my Canon iPF5000...
As this was driving me crazy, I have tried a clean install of MacOS 10.8.3 (as 10.8.2 is no more available from Apple servers...). No success, same blocking issue.
Eventually, I've found the workaround: using the imagePROGRAF Advanced Preview. You have to click on "Print..." in Lightroom in order to see the driver settings window, and then check the "Preview before printing" option in the main tab of the driver settings. Then I can preview my Lightroom printing work and then launch successfully my printing.
Simple workaround, but very strange bug...
For me, the root cause could be multiple and not very obvious.
Is it Mac OS 10.8.3 ? But why can I make prints from Preview application for instance, and not from LR ?
Is it the Canon driver ? But this lead me to the same question.
Is it Lightroom ? Does it send corrupted data that make the driver crazy but not the imagePROGRAF Advanced Preview ?
So, if any user of Canon iPF5000 + Mac OS 10.8 + Lightroom is around, please share your experience.
And if any Apple, Adobe or Canon engineer read this, please try to fix this.
    Happy printing,
    Amaury

It's different how applications write print data. If you use Advanced Preview from the driver then it calculates already the output which afterwards is only sent to the printer.
Have you once tried to print with fast graphic process switched off (option of advanced settings)?
    Hope it helps
