Upgrading to AJA io HD/FCPS 2 Right Before P2 Project - Help!!

I'm starting a project today that was shot entirely on P2 in HD. It was originally supposed to be xferred to digibeta and then I would ingest for offline at DV quality like I normally do (most of what I cut is still shot on 35 and 16mm film). We found out yesterday that they had shot 4 times the amount of footage that was discussed, therefore causing budget problems for conversion and also the amount of time needed to xfer that many hours of footage. Also, the project is going to be finished SD and mostly for internet use anyway.
I've previously done one job shot on P2 that I completed unsupervised, therefore it wasn't much problem that I wasn't able to output my video on both my broadcast monitor and my client plasma monitor. Normally, I work supervised and this job will be with several clients behind my back. So, I quickly bought an AJA io HD box and the upgrade to FCP Studio 2 and it's due in this morning. I currently use an AJA ioLD SDI to firewire that's hooked into my MacBook Pro and use FCP version 5.1. I plan on switching out the AJA boxes and upgrading the software and I wanted to see if there's anything I need to look out for beforehand. I have no time to waste as I need to start cutting immediately. I usually never upgrade anything without a few days grace incase there's problems.
Here's my questions:
1. They gave me the first day's dailies on a WD external FW drive. I usually cut on a SATA CalDigit RAID. Since it's the backup to the P2, could I possibly cut directly off the WD drive? Since they shot so much footage, I'm not sure how much room I'm going to have on my RAID unless I do some quick cleaning.
2. It was shot on an HD Panasonic HDX3000 Camera. I should be able to view it real time on my broadcast HD monitors with the new AJA io HD box, correct?
3. Is there any major changes to the user interface in FCP 6? I'm hoping it's pretty similar to version 5 as far as the workflow. I don't want to get stuck in the middle of the edit and can't find buttons, etc...
4. I viewed Shane's QT tutorial on the P2 workflow for version 5 on the only P2 project I worked on, but is importing P2 footage for version 6 easier or different??
5. Any other important "must know" info with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Eddie

The AJA I/O HD connects to your computer via FW800. This means that your firewire bus is now occupied. So if you want to connect a drive to the computer, you need either an Express34 adapter for FW or for eSATA. I highly recommend eSATA.
Now...they shot with the HPX3000...this might very well mean that they shot using the AVCIntra codec and NOT DVCPRO HD. Contact the DP to verify what format they shot. So this format, while you use the same Log and Transfer interace, will require more space and fast drives. FCP does not work with AVCIntra natively, it needs to convert it to ProRes 422. This codec is about 2-4 times larger than DVCPRO HD. And the conversion process requires and Intel Mac, and will take a while. Especially if you are doing this on your laptop. Bottom line, you will need more drives. I recommend a large eSATA Raid.
You will be able to use the I/O HD to monitor this footage.
Yes, the interface has changed. Look at this new tutorial, P2 Workflow with FCP 6. While this is still for DVCPRO HD, this is the same interface for AVCIntra. You just need to make sure to click on the sprocket menu to choose PRORES 422 (NOT HQ) as the format to convert to.

I've never learned to read those logs, but it would appear that you might have an MPEG2 file in that project. If so, then QT is having trouble loading it.
I'd approach this just like any other failure to open a project. Take all the media offline and see if it opens. Assuming all the media is living on a separate volume from the volume where your FCP project file lives, Eject the media volume and try to open the project.

  • Upgraded to IOS5, now music doesnt work right, displayed song not playing, plays 3,4 songs then stops although is appears to be playing. Help

upgraded to IOS5, now music not working right. displayed song not playing, plays 4,5 songs and stops although it appears that it is playing. Cycled pwr, didn't work. tried resyncing, same thing.Help?

I have an iPhone 4 and ever since I upgraded to iOS5 i've got the same problem. Apple need to release a patch as there's no way of fixing this unless we downgrade our phones back to iOS4 which would just suck!
I often shut the music app down and start again but even then the artwork doesn't match the song playing and will only play a few songs. It's frustrating when you're driving or going for a run, having to pull over or stop and sort it out.
We'll have to wait for Apple to bring out a patch unfortunately.

  • Need FCP 5.1 before I can upgrade to 5.1.2

I have just reinstalled by FCP Studio and before I can upgrade to 5.1.2 I have to have 5.1 ! Where do I find it? ASearch of the Apple site doesn't bring it up. Thanks

Are you asking why you can't install FCS 5.1.2 from 5 on your Mac.
FCP 5.1 is a Universial version of the application. It is made to run natively on Intel-based Macs.
You need the crossgrade from FCS 5 to 5.1. It's not a complete necessity.
There's not much of a significance between 5 and 5.1
    But here's the link:

  • After upgrading to 10.0.9, FCP X doesn't startup anymore

The headline says it all : After upgrading to 10.0.9, FCP X doesn't startup anymore.
I trashed all preferences and I moved all projects and events to a backup folder. Still - the new version just will not launch.
I don't even get to see the splash screen. I'm back working with 10.0.8.
    Any ideas???

    Thanks for your feedback.
The first time I updated without compressing and moving the FCP X app.zip to a new folder. So no it was not hidden. The other times after that I zipped 10.0.8  and put it in a subfolder.
I had updated FCP X several times before without any issues.

  • I just bought Final Cut Studio right before this new version...

I just bought Final Cut Studio right before this new version came out. Am I eligible for a free upgrade to the new software?

I'm sorry, but these replies have been ludicrous.  To actually answer your question, I would think they would honour their usual 14-day return policy, but you would need to speak with Apple directly.
As to the whole "which is better" debacle, there is no doubt that Final Cut Pro 7 is the more polished and fleshed out piece of editing software, and what everyone is most familiar with to boot.  But let's be honest, what do you expect for software that is ten years old versus three days.  The fact of the matter is that pretty much everyone editing with Apple's software in the not so distant future is going to be editing on Final Cut Pro X, hands down.  It's fundamentally that much better.  You nay-sayers out there, if you don't switch to Adobe or Avid, you will go to FCP X!  There is a reason for that, and there will be an even stronger reason for that with every update.  People don't seem to understand that.
In your situation, if you don't own either, it makes a whole lot more sense to me for you to just roll with the hiccups FCP X brings if you can at all handle it.  If not, you are going to spend $999 now on FCS 3 and another $400 in the near future when you decide to take the leap.  Is there something worth $1000 to you in FCS 3 that FCP X doesn't offer?  If so, then great, go ahead.  It's an amazing piece of software.  If not, enjoy the head start on what editing is going to look like for the next ten years.
All the best talking with Apple.  The way that they are pushing FCP X I would hope you don't run into any trouble.

This page has .png files of old logo 128*128 works well:
    https://blog.mozilla.org/faaborg/2009/06/18/the-new-firefox-icon/
Use this page to convert to .ico file:
    http://www.convertico.com/
Save the created icon to local computer.
Then download this and use to replace icon, you need to load your FF application, change appropriate icons, and save. FF can not be running when you save.
Also go to desktop and taskbar, right click icon, go to properties, and change icon.

  • FCP X does not recognize projects and events on USB drive after a time machine restore of the MBP macintosh disk

FCP X does not recognize projects and events on USB drive after a time machine restore of the MBP macintosh disk.
I upgraded from an i5 to an i7 15" MBP and restored my files using my time machine backup. All seemed to go ok, except I had to use the migration assistant because on the initial boot the MAC didn't recognize the backup database on the USB device. MAybe this is a hint.
Since when I start FCPX it too cannot finnd the project or event directories.
Before my upgrade, I had a choice of files either on the Macintosh disk or the 2TB USB disk.
Now only files on the Macintosh are accessible to FCPX. The USB drive is visible under events and project but it finds no projects or events.
    Please help if you can.
    Thanks
    Barry

Thanks... alas no one has responded.
I think I have the structure that you are recommending.
I have a root level directory (Final Cut Events) with the files in them.
The puzzling thing is that it used to work before the migration!.
Anyway I'm going to move the contents to the root and see what happens.
    On a slightly different note...
I also posted a question about CPU utilization. Can I ask a question or two?
While rendering a short clip, I noticed burst of disk activity when the render started (likely loading the media files into ram since I have about 4Gigs available, then almost no activity while the render is happening, then more disk activity when its done.
However the cpu activity is not as high as I would have expected since rendering requires a lot of cpu.
What is your experience? I know some render is done by the GPU, but in my older i5 the CPU was about 100%, now in my i7 its about 50%.
Please look at the attached utilization for CPU and disk activity.
    Thanks for any thoughts... Barry

  • FCP crashes when opening particular project file

I have one particular FCP project file that crashes each time I try to open it. I have read other threads and tried to follow their suggestions, but to no avail. I have tried opening it on different computers (both PowerPC and Intel), disconnecting hard drives (to keep media offline), creating a new user, etc. None of it works. The file will not even get to the "Preparing Video" stage before the spinning beach ball appears and FCP crashes. Thanks for your help! I have included the error message below:

Hi, thanks for the response.  The project was actually finished in v2, but I wanted to open it in v7 as a reference.  I don't want (and shouldn't) have to keep all previous versions of the software installed on my system so that I may be able to open project files. Most software programs I work with are backwards compatible or provide some means of upgrading files to newer format.  Can you imagine how things would be if Word Doc format became unusable with each MS Word release?  :-)
In this particular case, Pre7 shouldn't be crashing like it is.  Ideally, it should recognize a previous version project file and either update it automatically or drop features no longer supported (with some message to the user or log file generated).  The error message is ambiguous at best and pretty useless as it didn't really help in identifying the root cause of the problem.  This is likely the result of some uncaught exception when the program parses the .prel project file and finds an element attribute it doesn't expect (version "3" instead of "4").

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later

             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

  • FCP refuses to open particular projects

    Hello everyone
My problem basically is that FCP suddenly refuses to open projects that were able to a few days ago. It seems that it is selecting the ones it wants to open rather than ones I want open. All were edited in FCP6.02
I tried doing a clean install (upgrade) from FCP 3 to FCP 6.02 and the problem still exists. Two projects still won't open. When I re start I get a FCP message stating "Something has happened"
    Can anyone help?

Sounds like something's pretty weird if you can't find the autosave versions. Do a spotlight search for your fcp project name and see if perhaps they're hiding someplace.
But here's another idea. Often, when a project won't load, the problem is a corrupt piece of media. First and easiest thing to do is to delete all your renders. You will have to rerender but that shouldn't be too big a problem. If that doesn't help, try taking all your media offline. Hopefully all your media is on an external drive, so simply disconnect the drive from the computer before trying to launch fcp. If your project will load, do a save as for the project and shot down, reconnect the drive, launch the saved as project and gradually reconnect the media til you find the problem.

  • I upgraded my Iphone, but now I can't connect it to itunes because it is not upgraded. However, when I want to upgraded, it says that my computer (imac)  needs to be upgraded to another version. I can't find anything to help me out.

I upgraded my Iphone to IOS6, but now I can't connect it to itunes (10.6.3) because it is not upgraded. However, when I want to upgraded, it says that my computer (imac Mac OS 10.5.8)  needs to be upgraded to another version. I can't find anything to help me out.

You need iTunes 10.7 or later.
To get this, you need Mac OS 10.6.8 or later.
You can get 10.6 Snow Leopard here -> http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

  • I have pluged a portable battery to the USB and my macbook pro stopped working after that, right before it shut down there was a message on the screen that said something like " USB device is withdrawing so much power, please disconnect and connect again?

I have plugged a portable battery to the USB and my macbook pro stopped working after that, right before it shut down there was a message on the screen that said something like " USB device is withdrawing so much power, please disconnect and connect again?
if the device I connected have caused this, shouldn't the macbook itself have some type of protection that should prevent this from happening.
because when I took it to an apple certified maintenance shop, the guy said that now it could only run while connected to the power. it won't run on batteries. and that I have to change the motherboard.
can I just replace the damaged part only, would apple consider this as a design issue and they could pay for it, or should I just buy a new motherboard for 800$.
    Help.

    BB1B2,
The problem is in finding a tech shop that will/can do board level repairs on Macs. They are few. And I certainly wouldn't spend $800 on a new logic board - I would replace the computer if I had to pay that much!
You could call around to a few repair shops and see if they feel competent to isolate the problem and do a board level repair - but I'm afraid, in the end, that your search will be futile.
    Sorry,
    Clinton

Yes, I see that I can get the later version of OS software, but its not availabe for immediate download. My only options appear to be having it shipped, or going to the store to purchase.
